Wii U - General Discussion Thread
If Apple's iTunes Match wasn't so clunky, it would be an amazing system overall.

Being able to play games I bought on PS3 on my Vita is great and all (really, it is), but I'm going to hold my breath until the PS4 is released later this month. I'm still a bit sore about PS2 BC disappearing this generation, and have concerns about whether or not the next Playstation and Xbox will play the digital games I've purchased. They bloody better.
My biggest concern is that they've built up their digital distribution and actually done a pretty good job of it (big and consistent sales, the ability to upgrade the HDD on your own) to make digital purchases somewhat attractive, and now are probably going to release a system that can't play PS3 games because of the change in processor.

With Steam, at least it's generally the same architecture. Some version of DirectX and not a huge difference in processors with regard to support legacy software. I can buy 10 year old games on Steam and have a reasonable expectation that they'll run on my fancy new computer (assuming you're running Windows, anyway). Consoles always try to reinvent the wheel (Emotion Engines, Cell processor, the 360's triple-core) to the point that they have to put old hardware in new systems just for them to run old games (Wii and PS3).

When a company is in complete control of their development environment, IE hardware and software, is it really so hard to anticipate these things and ensure old software can run on new hardware? The PC market has been doing it for decades, and it's only really old stuff (DOS games, for example) that isn't usually compatible - and even then people find ways to make them run.

I really doubt PS4 will play current PSN or PS3 games. I expect NextBox will though.

You'll expect it will play PSN/PS3 games? That'd be mighty big of Sony ;)

You expect the NextBox to play PS3 games? ;)

Really though, if they're smart, both Sony and M$ will find a way to run old games that are digital purchases. I have a feeling the new Xbox will have more similar hardware to the 360 than the PS4 to the PS3. It will be very interesting to see how these issues are handled across console generations, but at least we know they won't fuck it up as bad as Nintendo.

Edit: Just realized Erad beat me to the obvious joke while I was writing my post.
Strawman argument at its finest. Also spoken like someone who hasn't played Condemned or Kameo... wait, oh you haven't played any game on that list have you? Both of those were fantastic.
I think you need to look up the definition of "Strawman argument". I said it was my opinion, I wasn't setting up a straw man in order to tear it down. And I did play (and beat) Kameo once I picked up a 360. Just because I didn't play a game at the launch doesn't mean I never played it. Kameo was just OK - IN MY OPINION. Yes, I'd still say NintendoLand is a better launch title. And thank you for validating that NSMB is better than any of those 360 games - that was sort of the point. I'm not saying the Wii U had a stellar launch as it only had (and still only has) a few good games. But that is par for the course - the 360 didn't blow anyone away either except that it was the first HD console so relative to the PS3/Xbox/Gamecube it was new and shiny. The Wii U of course does not have that advantage since it is just playing catch-up in the graphics department. But game-wise, the 360 launch was just as mediocre as most (if not all) console launches and it seems like everyone from the top down here on CAG forgets that. And whether I played all the games or not doesn't mean I can't look at those games and give them a big "meh" - my 360 would have been collecting dust as well if I bought one at launch. Seeing that list makes me glad I didn't. Hell, I'm certainly entitled to my opinion as much as the 95% of CAGs dumping on the Wii U who have never so much as touched one .
From what I've seen it's in some strange limbo where it's not a completely new game, but it's way way way more content than an "expansion". New areas, tons of new monsters to hunt (though a good handful are just more powerful re-skins of existing beasts), new items, a second chacha for soloing, save transfer ability between WiiU and 3DS versions (which I'm pumped about), etc.

I'm really hoping for some sort of "buy WiiU and 3DS versions, get 20 off" or some such. I travel for work so it'd be great to farm solo on the road, then get home to WiiU and jump online with the same character.
That would be nice. It would have been even better if they had a bundle with both versions for say $70 or so, or maybe $80 with some exclusive DLC or something. They'd have gotten me hooked in for sure if they did that. You wonder if this were a Sony exclusive if it would have been a cross-play title. I picked up Sly Cooper at release partly because of that.

Man the ports on this console suck. I thought Assassins Creed would be great but they just duplicated the minimap on the second screen. The map's actually worse than brotherhood. Seems obvious to me that they'd put the whole map functionality on the gamepad - let you scroll around, add markers, etc.

You can't use the touch screen for the menus, either. Dumb

The ME3 port is pretty good from my experience, but the interactive comic from ME2 forces you to either kill your ship crew or half of your combat crew (from what I can tell), meaning you start 3 with a lot of familiar faces missing regardless of how you respond. It was upsetting.

Sonic Racing is a good port
Mass Effect 3 is a good port, but no one bought it because they were pissed that PS3/360/PC got Trilogy for the same price a couple of weeks beforehand
Black Ops 2 is a good port, but there's no DLC for it (yet, anyway)
Tekken Tag Tournament 2 is a good port
Ninja Gaiden 3 Razor's Edge is a good port, but the game is still bad
Assassin's Creed 3 is a good port

Everything else ranges from okay to really bad in terms of ports.

I played all of the Assassin's Creed games on the PS3 before AC 3. I didn't feel any negative differences on the Wii-U so I would call it a good port as well.

Yeah, I started playing this today and I have to agree that particular choice was... strange. It got even more baffling when I discovered that you get Dr. Chakwas even if the crew dies. All the other choices were the same black and white ones they were in the previous games, so I don't quite understand that one. Oh well.

Anyway, in regards to ports, ME3 is pretty great. To me, this is what the second screen is great for... you get a decent (and interactive) real-time map, and you can hotkey powers. Why developers think we need more than that, I have no idea. Then, it appears that most aren't even willing to go that far, so...

Oh, and it has the most seamless screen switching I've seen yet. It's basically instantaneous. I'll be strange enough to admit that I actually switched the screen to get up and get something to drink just because it was so easy.
Wait--- are you saying you can switch screens in me3?! I couldn't find it. How?!
Don't feel bad, I actually had to look it up... Hold select for a second or two. Switches right over.

That was my problem. It wasn't worse, but it wasn't better either. I could've just bought it on PS3. I'm not talking pixels, framerate or whatever.

They fail to make us of an obvious control advantage and just slap a minimap on the gamepad. The same one that's in the corner of the tv screen. It's like 3DS games that use the top screen for menus and leave the bottom one blank. The active-time events are bad, too. Yes I could hold A to loot corpses, but I could also tap a nice little touchscreen button that says Loot and there wouldn't be two commands overlapping one button. And you know they were aware of it, because there's a Call Horse button on the touch screen.

At least in Arkham City you could drag the map and see the rest of the city (though I have other beefs with that version, considering it came long after the original). In AC3 even when you open the proper map with Select, you still have to move it with the thumbstick. Laziness.

It seems like the port of Resident Evil Revelaitons will have off-tv play, Pro Controller support and modified touch screen controls from the 3DS version. So...it seems like Capcpom is putting in a tiny bit of effort on the Wii U version.

im not sold that ps4 will be announced on the 20th. I would be shocked if it is the big news at the press conf the 20th.

I don't know what else they could be doing that they would be inviting a bunch of investors and media etc too unless its a vita price drop or a re design of the vita.

I'd add Darksiders II to the list of good ports.

i was thinking the same thing that it could be something to do with vita. that would make alot of people mad. They could also say well we have a new system coming out in 2014 at the end and say they will show it at e3. Ps3 has just came out with white in u.s and a red one with god of war. That would be awful thing to do and say oh well you have to pay for a new system from us in fall after you just paid 300 bucks for white ps3.

I've been playing Skylanders Giants on the wiiU. I've got it on the PS3, and its damn near the same. The gamepad only option is the best- since I can watch TV and listen to something other than the bad VAs they added.

I only realized that it wasn't coming to Wii U today a few weeks ago, but... yeah, that doesn't seem like a terrible thing. The more they released, the more it felt like Duke Nukem Forever all over again. And, to be fair, I say that as someone who (wait for it) loved DNF. I'm guessing I'll enjoy Aliens, but more in a 'for $20 or less' kind of way.

Oh, well... c'mon, Lego City. Please don't be terrible.

Eurogamer gave it a 3/10. Edge gave it a 5/10. Destructoid gave it a 2.5/10. IGN gave it a 4.5/10. Clearly not something to be missed, assuming it got cancelled for Wii U.

Yeah, not a big deal. The WIIU didn't need their stupid game, anyhow.

Postpone a title for 6 months, however, and there's going to be hell to pay, Ubisoft!
Yeah, I guess when a game people are looking forward to gets delayed 6 months for no real reason, everyone should be happy about it.
This. The game is ready to ship in two weeks. Even the devs are screaming to release it.

Seconding this, here is the link for those that are interested.

When Michel Ancel gets aboard the hate train, a least some of the whining can be justified, right?
I thought it was grapes for whining.

But sure, whatever fruit works for you.
It's cheese, and the total delay is actually 10 months. Was meant to be a launch title, but a lot of things were meant to be launch titles.

the game is not bad at all the system games are awful but it's amazing on pc. REally who does not play a game just because critics say they suck. All my life i had games that people said was just awful that i really enjoyed. do you really think games like halo and cod should get 8's and 9's all the time? NO they get that because thye get paid and free stuff from those game companys to give them high scores

you do know games ship a month before release right? most stores have the stuff in their warehouse two weeks before game is out. at this point it would be hard for places like gamestop and what not to get it to their warehouse and to stores in two weeks

Well, the Wii U version has dropped off the face of the Earth since October or so. So who's to say that it wasn't already silently cancelled?
It would be hilarious if it were the definitive, bug-free version
Tried doing a little research online but had no luck. Does anyone know if I can download Club Nintendo Rewards on the wii u? Meaning, I have enough coins to download the Paper Mario game on the Club Nintendo Site. It says it's compatible with the wii. Am I able to purchase this reward with my saves coins and download it on the wii u? Is the wii u set up for this yet?

I just got a Wii U for XMas and I'm still hazy about what you can and can't do with it. I need to transfer all my games from the wii to the wii u. I'm guessing that's possible. I just thought the virtual console wasn't available for the Wii U yet so therefore I thought the wii U would need an update in order to play those things? I dunno.

Wish there was some solid text and info on this topic.

Yeah, with the way there's almost no new information on the WiiU version and how terrible the reviews have been for 360/PS3 (which will likely lead to low sales) I wouldn't be surprised at all if they just end up cancelling it. In fact, with those 2 factors, I'd be more surprised at this point if the game comes out for WiiU than if it got cancelled. Too bad, I was really looking forward to motion tracker on the gamepad.

You can play Paper Mario on the Wii portion of your WiiU. So you'll launch the Wii from the WiiU dashboard and then be able to anything you could do with a regular Wii (except GameCube stuff of course).

Does that make sense?

It will be interesting to see if people use this game as a benchmark for the Wii U, since he's saying that they are using the PC textures for it.

For all the talk of using the gamepad as an assist to the racing player, I wonder if they thought about using it for an opposing player, directing cops, setting up obstacles, etc. That could make for an interesting experience.

Yeah there's a little note on the product page on club nintendo that links to here:

There's also a full system transfer guide here:

Good point. Gamestop could be heroes to Wii-U gamers, but it would probably kill their relationship with Ubisoft.

I hope they release some info on the gba games, I'm guessing that will not be until E3 since they are slowly trickling out the wii u virtual console games.

The ambassador games were a good selection, I would just like metriod zero mission since it is a excellent remake of the first game and the minish cap. And of course any gba gems that went under the radar.

I was also listening to the 8-4 podcast and they talked about rando of blood as an example of a game on the vritual console that would have to be re-licensed by Nintendo through konami who really has not shared it's wii u virtual console plans yet. Made me quite sad . Playing balloon fight on the gamepad was a really nice experience.

It would be cool if the gamepad was more like a iPad in the sense that it could use remote play and connect to wii u over the internet and play off-screen enabled games and virtual console stuff. Also have a better reach antenna wise to communicate with the console itself. I may be too optimistic since Nintendo has not worked out it's online kinks but Nintendo can do some pretty neat things with just the gamepad since it is pretty much a "game-tablet". It would be cool if they could also add Spotify or Rdio to stream music while playing games too.
