You can turn off the screen by using this step by step guide, though pressing any button on the pad will turn it back on.

Another alternative you can try is to move the gamepad far enough away to lose its connection.  After a short period of time, the gamepad will turn off, and it won't turn on again until you hit the power button.

Most software titles will ask you to resync the gamepad before continuing, however it is worth a shot to see if you can still just use the Wii U Pro controller at that point.

 
I honestly don't see the problem with the GamePad. I use it all the time, especially the Off-TV Mode. I actually use the GamePad so much that I have a hard time playing Wii U games on the TV. Wind Waker is especially challenging in that regard.

I hate what Nintendo is doing with Amiibos.  My kids like them so I buy them some but Nintendo was supposed to be using Amiibos as a fun little cosmetic add on.  They're becoming more and more important.  I wouldn't be surprised if the next Nintendo console is called the Wiimiibo and every $60 games requires $40 of Amiibos.

 
Yea, it's almost like Nintendo is trying to make money like an actual business here. Not to mention Super Smash Bros and Mario Party 10's functionality was announced as part of the original amiibo announcement.

And how is that worse than Skylanders, Disney Infinity or Lego Dimensions? Hell, even the most basic Lego pack costs double what the average amiibo costs, and that's just one level!

Disney Interactive and Activation not console manufacturers. Isn't the difference obvious?

Speaking of Mario Party 10, since you brought it up, it's pretty damn shitty that they don't let you use pro controllers. I already had the WiiMotes but for people that skipped the Wii generation, they have to buy $160 in controllers to play the game with 4 players. That's pretty damn shitty. It's obvious that Mario Party 10 was a Wii game originally but was delayed to the Wii U based on the controllers.

Except all the party games rely on Wiimotes. Wii Party U and the Mario & Sonic games both rely on the GamePad and Wii remotes, especially since the Pro Controller has no motion sensor in it. Most people who play a lot of party games don't own Pro Controllers.

Also, it's a but difficult to believe it was held over a generation given that it was released 3 years after the system launched and over half the game requires Wii U-specific equipment.

You seem to be under the impression that the Pro Controller is the main controller of the console. It's not. The Game Pad is the main controller with the Wiimotes as the main secondary. The Pro Controllers are a bone Nintendo threw to core gamers.

I think it's terrible to hold. I wouldn't fire up my PS4 or Xbox and plan on playing a game with a tablet that has buttons randomly placed. That would be uncomfortable and awkward. Likewise I have portable devices if I don't want to play on the TV.

Granted I have only played a few Wii U games but I have used the Pro Controller every time and that's all I plan on playing with. If the GamePad was such an awesome idea why don't they sell it seperately so that potentially all four players could use it?

 
Because it's too expensive. Initially they were going to allow 4 GamePads to be used, but the technology cost too much so they limited it to 2.

And how are the buttons randomly placed? It's literally the same layout as the Pro Controller except the + and - buttons are on the side instead of the middle.

I also assume you won't be picking up Wind Waker, Mario Maker, StarFox Zero, and Zelda Wii U then?

Well I'm now a Xbox One/Wii U gamer. Grabbed the 32GB Mario Kart 8 bundle off Amazon. I've played all the Mario Karts except Double Dash and Mario Kart Wii. Gonna grab Prime Trilogy and Galaxy when I can, aside from the Nintendo 1st party Wii U titles like Starfox and Zelda.

Update: Wooo, Amazon just shipped my system, thinking of grabbing Wind Waker HD Remake as its on sale $35 digitally for a cyber Monday deal (lasts till the 3rd). Pikmin 3 is also on sale, hmm.

Update: OK, passed on Pikmin 3 but grabbed Zelda. It's actually one of the ones I haven't played, since I skipped the whole Gamecube generation.

I just bought a Wiiu and I'm in need for extra controllers.  Can you use the Wavebird and fightpad controllers with any games or are those for certain games?

 
Pretty sure Wavebirds/official GC controllers are for Smash only.  I think some company makes a Gamecube pad imitation that will act as a Classic Controller.

The Wii U Pro controller is a great controller.

Just Smash Bros. the Wii U Pro Controller is excellent though, I play almost every game with that controller. I only use the Gamepad when I have to use it or with Super Mario Maker. I don't find the Gamepad to be as unbearable to hold as some others do, but it's still no Xbox One or PS4 controller. I love my Wii U, but find myself playing it significantly less than my Xbox One and PS4 mainly due to the horrid online systems, I feel so disconnected on Nintendo consoles.

 
I'll reiterate and state the official Wii U Pro Controller is awesome, but for the investment I would only get one for yourself.  So far for the multiplayer games Nintendo has opted to support CC / CC Pro, and that would work well enough if you have company over for the specific games that support it.

 
Performed a search but couldn't find anything. 

I know that Mega Yarn Yoshi was a TRU exclusive. But will it ever be refreshed, and will it always be a TRU exclusive? I'd love one but missed launch and haven't seen any updates since.

That's a good question. Nintendo has it listed on their site as "Available exclusively at Toys R' Us at launch", but nothing about a second round of them.

 
Yay! Super Mario Advance 4 with the e reader levels is coming out here in the morning! I didn't expect it to come so soon. Maybe mother 3 is next. Anyways the trailer and $7.99 like always. But it's definitely an easy 8 bucks if it includes all 32 levels. Things like this is where nintendo shines on the virtual console when they do stuff like this. Between this and zero mission virtual console is having a good start in 2016.

Is there an official place to find which Japanese games have English already as an in-game option? The game I'm interested in now is Another Code R, but there might be more later.

And on my U.S. Wii system, am I better off using a Japanese version of the game since it's NTSC or European version (since I  know it has English already) and figure out how to deal PAL "problem".

(P.S. As of now, I have done nothing to get my system to play either of these, so a PM with advice would be helpful. I have a launch system I don't want to "ruin", so maybe I grab a cheap garage sale one even if I prefer just a software "solution".)

New rumors about Zelda Wii U have leaked.

It will be a dual-release for the NX like Twilight Princess was way back when.

There will be full voice acting, except for Link.

Speaking of Link, Linkle's gonna be canon as you cn choose between a male or female Link.

Anyone else have a problem with Wii Fit U Quick Check not being able to recognize your save file. It says you can download this program to just do a body check or input your fit meter data, I recently got Wii Fit U and just mainly use that, but it has never worked for me. I've looked online and I don't see anyone else having an issue...

I pretty much only use the Fit Meter at this point myself, and I have not had any problems with it locating the save file. Did you do the body check in the regular Wii Fit U game to set up that game?

 
Just needed a software update. Lol, decided to check that I needed to be online, as I play my Wii U offline, and sure enough a software update was prompted when I tried to launch Quick Check.
 
So wait....just to be clear....Nintendo is putting out ZERO games for the rest of the year.  That is completely insane.  I can only assume they're going to dump the Wii U consoles at fire sale prices this holiday.

Only games left is Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE and Paper Mario Color Splash.

As far as fire sale prices not likely. They have seemed to be fine with selling it at $300 the last year or so and they are lowering their shipments by a lot this year to pre for the NX next year. Its possible you could find some good deals at retailers if they really want to move units out of the store but tbh Nintendo has done a good job of keeping inventory low at most places.

You do realize that Nintendo doesn't announce most of their lineup until about 6 months or so before release, right? There will be a Direct sometime within the next few months that will detail their Fall and Winter games.

I'm skeptical about this because they already said only one game will be at E3 and that game, Zelda, isn't coming out for another year. I google'd nintendo direct and saw reference to an upcoming Japanese one. It's only got a couple of games on it and it's 3DS only.

As for the two games mentioned by other posters, Mario and Sonic at the Olympics is a Sega game and I never heard of #FE so I looked it up, it's an Atlus game. Zelda is Nintendo's last game on Wii U and it's not coming out for a year.

It's unbelievable that they will have absolutely no games this holiday.

 
And yet, the last few years have had their Directs announce a slate of games that come out a few months later. Both Kirby Robobot and Paper Mario were only announced a few months ago. Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, Twilight Princess HD, Minecraft, and TMS#FE were announced about 6 months before their release (Well, Japanese in the case of TMS).

Nintendo even specifically said in their last Direct that they were only discussing their Spring/Early Summer lineup. Sometime this summer there will be a Direct detailing their Fall/Winter lineup, just like their last E3 digital event was. Believing that this schedule will stay the same for the entire year is foolhardy.

Also, while Atlus is publishing the title, Nintendo was involved with the production of TMS#FE, since it does include Fire Emblem characters.

Mario and Sonic is published by Nintendo as well as TMS. Even if you take those 2 out Paper Mario Color Splash is out some time this year.

Maybe they will announce some other titles for the holiday but it seems they are very much set on pushing everything to the NX so it has a strong launch lineup.

 
To be clear: I don't expect a huge tentpole release this year. I think the Wii U's holiday titles will include some Mario sports title (probably Mario Golf), some kind of spinoff title, and some kind of either GameCube or Wii game remastered. But more than likely Nintendo's big title this holiday this season will be Pokemon Sun/Moon.

If they put Mario Golf on the Wii U, the only other game that I was really hoping for on the Wii U would be Luigi's Mansion. If I got both, I would not care if the Wii U was shelved in favor of the NX.

 
I think we're pretty much at the end of life for Wii U. Last week I don't think there was even any Recent News in the eShop concerning it.

I kind of wish they'd at least put a little more effort into the VC titles (more Wii titles and maybe start with some GameCube titles) but I don't think it's going to happen.

I think we're at the end for 3DS, too. We may see an odd game trickle out but, for the most part, this is it.

I think most in the gaming press believe that the influx of 3DS games is because this is the end of the handheld's lifecycle (i.e. every publisher out there wants to get the game out this year to ensure it can make money). Outside of Pokemon, Nintendo itself has nary a thing coming out on it (and no, Metroid FF is not a one I'm really counting), and doubtful there's anything else being developed for it for the future.

Besides the NX coming next year, I thought the Big N's terribly non-optimized Hyrule Warriors was a clear sign the company wasn't investing the resources to 3DS anymore. At any other time, Nintendo would have taken more care to make sure the game ran better using some sort of optimization/development quirks, but it appeared Nintendo just gave up and put the game out.

There's still a fairly persistent rumor that the NX is a handheld and home system in one.  That really does seem like the way they should go since I doubt their next home console would even sell as well as the Wii U.

People always say they want Nintendo to go multiplatform and honestly it would make sense for them to drop the hardware on their home consoles.  What's the point in selling hardware you lose money on?  At least with Xbox and PS, they make that back by getting licensing fees from 3rd party dev's.  Nintendo doesn't really get that.

Nintendo is making money off amiibo and now licensing their brand to other things, IE, mobile, theme parks, movies, clothing etc.

Honestly over all their hardware both home console and handheld are in a better bad spot. That said Nintendo is stubborn enough and has enough money in the bank that they can continue for a long time.

 
Plus, Nintendo's going all in on their Well Being product line, so there's another source of revenue there.

It's pretty much impossible to say whether the NX will do well or not considering we don't know a damn thing about it.

Though if it is a portable/console hybrid, it should sell really well in Japan.

That well being line ... all I can say is yikes. That is not going to do well. I think we all know that. I can't believe they're going all in on that. Even things like Fit Bit are fading off already.

As for the NX, I agree the console/handheld hybrid sounds like the way to go. That said, when has Nintendo actually done what everyone thinks they are (or should be) doing ... ?

The Kirby series amiibo are selling very well, though.

Just because they aren't scalper bait anymore doesn't mean they're dying. 

 
I think that the problem is that there really isn't a compelling reason to buy them because the software support seems 'meh'.

You can buy them to collect them, and I'm sure people do. People will collect anything.

In games, though, you sort of expect complete games so you'd get annoyed if the amiibo was needed to unlock a critical portion of the game. In addition, you'd get annoyed if, while playing the game, you needed the amiibo (or a different one) to replay a section. It's something that almost gets in the way.

So, they do the other bit which is that amiibos unlock special parts of the games but none of those are earth shattering. amiibos unlock, from what I've seen 'meh' things in games.

As little as they're supported on the Wii U, which has the reader built in from day one, they're supported even less on the 3DS which needs either a new 3DS or the reader accessory (something else you have to buy to make your amiibo do something 'meh' in very few games on the 3DS).

I kind of agree: I think they're dying out.

If amiibos were there from day 1 on both the 3DS and the Wii U AND did something compelling in most of the games then they may have been interesting.

 
Except what they do varies greatly between games. Yea, a lot of them do unlock paint jobs, but several of them offer game breaking assists (especially the Kirby series amiibo in Planet Robobot).

And the only amiibo series that hasn't sold well was Animal Crossing, mostly in the US, and the biggest reason for that was the lack of true mainline game to use them in.

Just because Nintendo's providing actual stock and they don't go for hundreds on eBay anymore doesn't mean they're dying anytime soon. The Super Mario series will sell well with little kids and those who couldn't get their Smash variants before (or prefer Classic Wario to Biker Wario) and I'd be willing to bet those Breath of the Wild amiibo sell like hotcakes once they're released.

The latest sales data was released back in April so it doesn't include the Kirby series or the second Splatoon wave, but the Link amiibo alone sold more than 700,000 units just in the first few months of 2016 (that's regular Link, not the Twilight Princess Link) with Pikachu and Zelda not far behind.

And for all the talk of how useless the Animal Crossing cards are, they still sold 28 million copies between their release and March 2016. There will probably be a bump in sales once the New Leaf update launches.

Nintendo's amiibo are going to be just fine. They're not dying out anytime soon.
