Will Smith in...Oldboy the American remake

This is so batshit that I had to double check to make sure it wasn't an Onion story. It could only be more ridiculous if it had announced McG and Abe Vigoda.

It probably won't happen. Either one or both of them will drop out of the project, or it'll be so radically reworked that it won't resemble the original much. Either way, a major studio won't finance, and Will Smith and Steven Spielberg will never make a movie where :

the main character fucks his own daughter
 
O never really did understand all the hype behind Oldboy. I thought it was kind of boring. But, I don't find any anime/weird foreign movies interesting.

Mongol was pretty good though.

Then again that can always be rewritten for a more PG-13 oriented crowd. I Say this because offhand I can't recall any movies with Will Smith that had an R rating plus it is a bit fucked up and also just can't see a crowd going in to see him

Thats another thing I don't agree with. Will Smith is a really likeable guy and I enjoy most of his stuff.

Plus, it is crazy seeing how much he has matured since Fresh Prince, which I think was a great show.

It would be like Will smith is imprisioned in a cage for 15 years by insectoid aliens. when he escapes he goes on a rampage of vengence, only to discover that the ant queen is his mother. He then makes an atomic bomb out a boombox and a can of spaghetti-o's and uses the bomb to "triumph over evil." All ants and fights will be CG. $2,000,000 explosives budget $200,000,000 overall budget. oprah is rumored to play the ant queen. shia labeouf will play the "suicidal man" (who will not be a suicidal man in the american version. he'll actually be a blind psychic who carries a sword).
 
I enjoy Will Smith's movies.. most of them, anyway (I loved I Am Legend).. but he's just not right for this part. Oldboy shouldn't be touched.

If this comes to pass, every time there's a distress scene in Oldboy, while watching Will on the screen, the whole "fake anger/mama noooooo" scenes from Fresh Prince will be playing in my mind.

That was an odd rating for that movie. There were people getting killed, but when you compare it to Aliens Vs. Predator it is either a slap in the face to EotS, or proof of how desensitized kids are these days. Enemy Of The State was a badass movie though. In retrospect I laugh at how Vantage Point was claimed to be better. Might have started off that way but fell apart 2/3 of the way through.

I don't know why you guys are hating on Will Smith so much. He's made a lot of simple popcorn flicks but he's not a bad actor. What I find terrible is that they're remaking Oldboy. Mama no!!!!!

Agreed. He was awesome in Hancock despite the plot holes in that movie.

He's been awesome even in the few sub-standard movies he's been in (Wild Wild West and Men in Black II come to mind).

That being said, I know nothing about Oldboy. THAT, being said, a remake isn't going to change one line or anything else in the ORIGNIAL, so who cares if it is remade or not? Just don't watch it.

This movie was not that great. I do remembe rthough i put it in my portable Panasonic DVD player and the subs were read in English(American). I could not get my dvd player at the time to do that though.
 
I'd like to see Michael Bay direct the Oldboy remake. If the story is anywhere near as good as Bay's Dark Knight script, I think that it would be surprisingly watchable, if not awesome.

In the meantime, I'm off to hack the internet. All of them.

I still don't understand why anyone is pissed. This movie will not change the old one at all. Don't wan't to see it, don't watch it! I think the poeple who liked Oldboy, want everyone to think they are better because they saw some movie the majority of american audiences didn't. Once Oldboy comes out here, and it is awesome, they can't wow everyone with their awesome movie skills and will need to move on to some other weird Japanese movie to watch thirty times.

Why use the Oldboy name when they will maim the story? I think Oldboy is not a well-known name. They could rename it without any consequence. I read about the changes they want to do. It sounds god awful. Why must Will Smith make me hate him?
 
lol @ all the hate in here because something they like might get some mainstream attention. There goes the exclusive club guys! If this Oldboy remake does happen it can only help bring more attention to the original. What do you think happened after the American remake of the Ring? I bet what happened was a bunch of people who never even heard of it before went and watched the original. I know I did. The same thing with the Departed. I know if it wasn't for the departed I would've never cared about Infernal Affairs. But thanks to it I went and saw Infernal Affairs and loved it.
 
Yeah, but The Ring movies sucked. All of them. Hell the American remake was better then the Japanese original, but it was still ass. The problem here is why remake something that was already great (if not better then that)? Also only so few know of The Departed and Infernal Affairs (the trilogy as a whole). Though with an American cover art that looks like this...

Nobody's obliged to think "oh now dcfox and everyone who hasn't seen old boy are now going to get a chance to enjoy it, yay." Frankly, I don't care if you see it or not. I'm not one to play missionary with my tastes and more importantly, this has nothing to do with anyone's secret favorite movie becoming popular (it's already popular on an international scale...okay, maybe Joe Actionflick hasn't caught on, but who cares.) White knighting is really obnoxious though...people are allowed to cringe when something they like is going to be remade by someone they don't trust with the source material.

When Uwe Boll announces his adaptation of "Shadow of the Colossus," be sure to tell everyone to stop hating and to think of all the people who might go play the game now.

What changes? There's not even a writer attached yet. Kinda hard to bitch about what they're changing when they don't even have a script yet for the remake.
 
There's been a script floating online for awhile now I believe when the writer from Better Luck Tomorrow and I want to say Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift was attached. Though that was an old treatment, so they won't use it...I think.
 
I don't see how some folks have such a hard time comprehending people being bothered that a film they enjoy is going to be raped.
 
Wow, this is a strange twist. I'm curious to see what Spielberg and Smith can do with this. It'll most likely be entertaining to watch at least. The original is a bonafide classic.

I'm just going by what the article says. If that script floating around is legit, the article seems to indicate they'll be doing a whole new treatment.

How is it really being raped? They're not going to suddenly make the original unavailable because of the remake. You can still watch the original any time you like. A remake won't affect that one way or another. Even if it does suck, you can either watch it once or just ignore it completely and continue watching the original. Really what's so terrible about that?
