Please note:

  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console.  Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work.  Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance, but DLC cannot.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold.  You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold.  Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

[*]All known sales and information on sales should make their way into the OP. Major Nelson usually updates his blog with new sales information every other Tuesday.

Played GOW beta last night. Unreasonable lag that plagued Gears 3 plagues this beta. Perhaps my 35/5 internet connection needs to be upgraded.

Is Forza Horizon 2 worth 30 dollars digital? Any way to get it cheaper at retail?
It is absolutely worth $30, without a doubt. The game is massive. There are a TON of events and things to do and find. This game is a deal at $100 in my opinion. :)

Some dude over at forbes wrote up an entire article about how making the X1 backwards compatible was the wrong move for Microsoft.

"If Microsoft honestly believes that the Xbox One represents a genuine generational leap over the 360 then it should now be forgetting about the past and straining every last sinew to making the Xbox One what it should always have been: a truly next generation console delivering truly next generation experiences."

Did he not also see all the games Microsoft is also producing? It is their answer to PS now but much more consumer friendly.

Clearly this dude is not in touch with the gaming community. Just some article written by some random as a directive from some higher up to get people to sign up so they could make an opposing comment in the "Comment on this story" section. Nice try Forbes.

Backwards comparability isn't going to make halo 5 any better but those are 2 separate things.

It's only a net positive for MS as former 360 owners might buy an X1

Love the campaign! I think all of the maps are going to be included - 14 total. That means Raven Down 19-1! I'm all in! Plus I hope the multiplayer is the same format with 4 v 4.
There's 19 maps. All the 360 maps are included, plus the 3 Windows Live exclusive ones. There's also an extra map for a 2 vs 2 playlist, so technically there's 20 total (the 20th won't be in the rotation of the normal playlists).

I literally have an Xbox One recently purchased in a box so I could wrap up the 360 backlog because I don't have the space for both. I wasn't looking forward to putting 150 360 games in storage and even though it's clear it's going to take a while to get every game BC I was happier to see that than any other reveal in their press conference.

The only sympathy I have is for people who took the initial "never BC" from Matrick as gospel truth and sold their collections thinking they would never really use them.

I think LIVE only needs a base of about 1.5mbs, but they recommended 3mbs. You should have more than enough with your current connection. Something else is likely at issue in your home network.

Edit: from a non-fanboy standpoint (love all 3 consoles) ms dominated e3 even without backwards compatibility. between hololens and their huge lineup of stuff that's actually coming soon they should get some momentum to try and play catch up on Sony. backwards compatibility is just icing on the cake, and im that creepy fat kid feverishly licking it.
Hololens was filler.. It was already demoed weeks ago including a Minecraft demo.. Microsoft has already positioned it as a device for practical uses with added gaming benefits.. and the initial impressions from people who had tried it after that event weren't very good.

Rest of the conference was good and the backward compat bomb was huge.

This is what people saying negative things about backward compatibility just aren't grasping.. There are still millions of 360 owners that are next gen holdouts that may have considered the PS4, but now knowing they can bring their digital purchases over as well as keep their disks is huge. Couple that with a trade the 360 in for $175 off an Xbox One and it's almost guaranteed they stay in Microsoft's ecosystem. Then you have EA Access that may gain huge amounts because of this if they figure out how to revoke ownership on 360 titles in the emulation code. How about Games with Gold only adding compatible 360 games going forward, that now makes their offering far more attractive. Then you have the publisher deals like Bethesda offering Fallout 3 with Fallout 4, and Ubisoft with their Tom Clancy deal. This is a very consumer friendly move that costs consumers nothing and adds a ton of value to the console.. Sure this isn't going to sway the tide, but I do think it is going to win them America and keep them relevant the rest of this generation.

I really don't blame people. Most BC consoles in the past pretty much had the old hardware in the box to make it work. The only previous software one was Xbox 360 playing Xbox 1, and for the most part I'd call that a failed experiment. Most stuff ran like shit, with the only I played that I would call good was Halo CE, and even that struggled with 16 player LAN. Halo 2 worked pretty decent but was plagued by ghosting. Most of the other stuff ran like shit or wasn't anything most people would care about.

Not sure how this really works but creating updated digital versions of these games with what sounds like an emulator packed around them is not a solution I saw coming. It doesn't actually read the disc beyond what game it actually is.

On a different note, make sure you grab DMC4 Remake if you want more games in the future, Capcom said the franchise is dead for a while if it tanks.

Too bad they kind of set it up for failure. Coming out digital only on the same day Batman does is a terrible choice. At least the price is low enough that it could offset it some. I have no doubt this will outsell DmC Definitive, especially when the DMC Collection last gen outsold the original release of DmC during it's launch. It actually adds a good chunk of content on top of gameplay tweaks and performance improvements. More playable characters is huge for a character action game, plus there's a new story mode. I don't think DmC actually added anything, just came with DLC and included tweaks based off of popular mods.

So no DmC 2 then? I liked the rebooted, granted I didn't play the original DMC games but I didn't think it was that bad in terms of sale numbers.

Next-gen port tanked hard. Europe had like 6000 total sales on launch. It didn't tank originally but it didn't do very well, Capcom seemed to consider it a failure though.

Most fans of the series didn't like it, something that can be shown by just how much DMC4 started getting talked up after DMC came out, which originally had a pretty mixed reception. Don't believe the naysayers that try to blame it entirely on Donte hate either. It was the dumbed down mechanics, slower combat, lower enemy count, specific weapon requirements on enemies (which did get fixed in Definitive), all on top of the tryhard edginess of Donte, Vergil, and Mundus. Along with Metal Gear Rising coming out around the same time showing what the genre could do, it was only really well received by people who didn't play the old ones.

Actually only the launch 60GB PS3 was hardware, all the other versions after that used software emulation.

In XBL Rewards news, if you preorder the base digital version of Black Ops III, you get 5,000 rewards credits ($5 back on $59.99 purchase). 10,000 credits ($10) back for preordering the $99.99 digital deluxe edition.

I'm really curious about how they're doing it. Some of the smaller, less taxing games might be straight emulation of the 360 executable code, but it wouldn't surprise me if games that utilize more of the 360's computing resources might actually be getting ported to run on the x86 hardware.

The last level of Defense Grid's main campaign would run into a lot of slowdown on the 360 when a lot of fortifications and enemies were on screen at once. I wonder how well the XB1 handles that.

We're also a little over a year and a half into the XB1 and PS4 life cycles. Isn't this about the time when backwards compatibility stopped being touted on the 360 and PS3?

The only real DMC games are Devil May Cry, Devil May Cry 3, Devil May Cry 4, and DMC. I don't even know what category to put Devil May Cry 2 in.

4TB portable HDD is a thing! via USB 3.0, this might be perfect for the Xbox One (depending on price) :)
It's been a thing and has been like how they do massive desktop drives before they come down in size/price and putting two drives in a single housing.

Can't find any pictures of those 4TB drives but here's the current Seagate 4TB which is a pair of 2TB drives (and Seagate owns Samsung's drive business now):

Not sure if you're serious but the user was talking about a sequel to the reboot hence the lowercase 'm' in DmC, not the 2nd game in the series.

So will these BC games be upscaled, or run in their native resolution?  At that, they still look good enough to play.  Not sure if I should wait and see if the Mass Effect series will get a reboot, or if I should go buy them all for somewhere around $5.  Never played them and close every single video I accidentally run into that starts to discuss the ending of the 2nd or 3rd one.

Other games I'd love added to BC:

Ninja Gaiden II (Still haven't finished that darn game.  Love it to death, but so frustrating)

Skyrim (played about 5 hours or so and then just got wrapped up into other things)

The Fable Series

Skyrim (played about 5 hours or so and then just got wrapped up into other things)

The Fable Series
They seem to play just like they did on 360 so if you thought they looked/played fine there then they'll look/play fine on XB1 based on the time I've spent with it so far. As far as I'm aware 360 was 720p native and scaled up to 1080p so XB1 I'm sure does the same since it's just running a software 360.

Skyrim will almost certainly happen since Bethesda is clearly on board (with Fallout 3 coming with Fallout 4). Fable is an MS property and shown in the splash image so that's definitely coming. Ninja Gaiden will hopefully come too but will be up to Tecmo.

I'm just realizing how dumb my question was. 1080p is 1080p. That being said, what are the major differences graphically between the two systems? Same number of lines, but just more colors, etc. able to be displayed?

Doesn't seem to be any other than the access to the system features of the XB1. I think both systems max out at 32 bit color depth and even if it's only 24 bit on the 360 you probably wouldn't see much difference (think most TVs cap at 24 bit and monitors at 32 bit). The way the emulation is being handled is that they created a 360 system in a virtual machine (computer inside a computer) that the XB1 can run and then running the 360 games through that VM. So other then being able to use those top level features like streaming you're still basically just dealing with a 360.

I've got a question that I'm hoping someone can answer. Do the Xbox Game Preview games, (early access to games like Elite Dangerous), count as game purchases for Xbox Rewards? I'm about 20 or 30 bucks shy of hitting the $200 by June 30th reward for $15. Elite Dangerous would be the perfect purchase to hit that mark, if it counts.

I don't see why it shouldn't. Its still a purchase.

At least this guy knows what he's talking about...

I've spent like $170 and I don't see any progress on the rewards bar.. not sure what to do.

According to this they aren't working on a remake of Mass Effect at least right now.

inserted viva pinata into my xbone, and it requires a 5.4gb update, guess you have to download the games not just install them
Yeah, it's said a rather large thing for each that I've put in. After the first one they went much faster so there may be some overlap stuff that it doesn't reacquire.

I dont think they'll make any ME games BC. ME (ie., ME 1) is out of the question for sure since it is already BC; I understand the remake would look much nicer but if you can already play the vanilla game on :xb1: why would be eager to get the remake? If there were any intentions, they'd have gone the Gears route - where the remaster is at near completion even before the BC came into play.

You know why they would? People are still clamoring for it and disappointed that it didn't happen again and EA would make millions for no risk. Also don't forget the PS4 side that can't play the games on their PS4.

I know it's not the same, but you could play Fable and Halo on the 360 via backwards compatibility, yet they still did anniversary editions for those titles. The cost to do it isn't massive like making a new game, and if the franchise is popular enough it will definitely have an audience to profit off of.

I truly believe that even if backwards compatibility was available on both systems they'd still do re-releases to pad their initial game options, and people would still buy them. Injustice and Tomb Raider came out relatively recently on both the PS3 and 360, and were re-released barely a year later to decent to strong sales. They demonstrate that people will buy the same game again, even if it's barely a year old.

Plus they could feature something to connect the old trilogy to the new story the game is going towards (like the Halo reissues have been doing). Adding new but simple things like a few new missions, characters, or even including all the armors and weapons could be a strong selling point for a remaster. Plus, in the event that there are people who are playing their first gaming system, re-selling the trilogy to them to introduce them to the game is a great selling point, instead of hoping they go out an buy the old games to play on their new system (it's possible they might do this, but when usually when people buy a current system they buy current games for it, and not previous generation games - somehow remasters don't apply to this).

^ I agree with the points you (The Ebbtide) and Eldritch make; yet, I feel that the cost benefit ratio would take a hit given the availability of BC and that it would play a significant role in determining what titles get remastered and what gets into BC-list. Having said that, Eldritch is right, ME is a good candidate for Remaster simply because of the fanbase it has on PS side, not just MS. I was only looking at it from XBox point of view and thats not right, obviously.

If the developer has any plans to remaster, I supposed they'd reach out to MS and request them to leave their game out of the backward compatible games. It appears that the only games that cannot be BC are the ones with hardware requirements - guitars, custom controls or Kinect. So, whats stopping MS from shafting the developers and making everything else BC (besides time and effort, that is).

The whole backward compatibility is not a game changer in itself; but, it is really an awesome USP going forward. All the people who stayed on 360 or moved over to PS4 will look at their games and wonder if it is no time to get an XB1. Most would see it logical to get an XB1, now that they can play their old games. So, the larger the BC-list, the better the chances, no?
