Please note:

  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console.  Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work.  Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance, but DLC cannot.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold.  You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold.  Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

[*]All known sales and information on sales should make their way into the OP. Major Nelson usually updates his blog with new sales information every other Tuesday.

I really don't get this BC thing. If it isn't individual game emulation why wouldn't they just get all the permissions they could and release all the games at once?

There's either more going on here technically than they are saying or it is some type of strategy in trickling the games that is going over my head.

Microsoft will probably sell more X360 games in the next few months than they ever did in the entire life cycle of the X360. lol
As much as I hate to admit it, I think the backward compatibility is just a smokescreen to hide the fact that Microsoft still doesn't have a wealth of or a variety of exclusive games for the One. And did PS2 games fly off the shelves when Sony announced BC for PS3? Nope.

Yeah, and how many quality exclusives are coming for PS4 this year?

Here's what Halo 5's Limited Collector's Edition gets you:

Are we literally forgetting that in the Playstation E3 press event they showed Batman: Arkham Knight? A game coming out next week on both consoles.

And Sony has exclusives, yes (like Sh3nmue!), but alot of them are coming out either next year or who fucking knows. I'd hardly say they have more than Microsoft as of right now. Maybe about even or Microsoft edging it out a bit, but nothing to really say Microsoft is using BC as an excuse.

So now that it has been a few days and the dust has settled a bit, I was wondering what is everybody's favorite XB1 game that was shown/revealed/etc. Doesn't have to be 'new' or exclusive. Could be Halo 5 or Fallout 4, for example. Just pick one game. Call it your 'game of the show'.

For me...

bTVhQAO.png
Horizon, SMT x FE, BC.

Sony already has BC and they charge money to use it

If adding the most request feature is just a smokescreen, then it is a damn good one

I never thought that the PS3 BC was about selling PS2 games, it was about selling PS3 hardware. Hey, don't be afraid to spend $599 on our new console, because your entire library* will work on it, too. You can buy it sooner because you don't necessarily have to buy a game at the same time.

With bundles, it's a bit different, but it's basically the same appeal. Look how many more people are willing to do the Beat Buy trade-in after the announcement. $175 now gets you to this gen with a game, some of your existing library, and a BD player. It becomes a lot more palatable.

All you ppl comparing this backwards compatibility to previous consoles doing backwards compatibility are comparing to the wrong thing. The reason it is crucial for Microsoft to support backwards compatibility is not for disc games but for digital. They have to compete with steam going forward and if they make ppl rebuy the indie games each console gen it's a tough sell. If I know my library moves with my console just like when I get a new PC then that is awesome! In the past when you had 30 SNES cartridges it's not the same as losing your 200 digital 360 games.

If you want me to invest fully into a digital market I need to feel some security like I will be able to keep it going on future devices like Apple TV and vudu.

Plus what about the day when Xbox is just a streaming service of games on your 3 inch by 3 inch black streaming box when my grandkids are playing games? This emulation stuff brings us one step closer. :)

backwards compatiiblity is really cool for GWG I dont really have the hard drive space on 360 to download them but soon I can try them out on the one

I'm also very surprised about the rave reception for backwards compatibility. I feel like I'm being gaslighted - people are excited to wait to play these old games on their new system when anyone can just play them now on their 360s? I'm sure if Microsoft pulls it off, they would have had to work technical gymnastics, but how are people forgetting that this is the same company that called for always-online, said that Kinect was integral to the Xbox experience, and wanted to prevent their system from playing used games? They flipflopped on all those stances, and once they see that backwards compatibility doesn't generate as much revenue as they'd like, they will drop it like a hot potato.

Or they flipped already on BC which was never going to happen because supposedly no one wanted it.  Except it's been their most requested feature since launch.

Aren't you forgetting something? PlayStation consoles have always had backwards compatibility until later PS3 models. If anyone cared for it as more than a token gesture, it would never have been phased out and the PS4 would have it.

This seems like the inverse of when Sony announced that PS4 would not support mp3s. There was a backlash, but it's unlikely that that impacted sales significantly. The Xbox backwards compatibility is also unlikely to do that.

What? Look, I'm not a 'fanboy', I own every console, but that is completely untrue. MS is killing it September - November of this year.
Corrected for you as so far all they have released at retail is Screamride and State of Decay.. I think less retail releases than Nintendo since last November and that's pretty tough to do, of course it is masked by 3rd party multiplats so I suppose that's why it isn't brought up.

Both the X1 and PS4 don't have a big library of incredible games right now, but giving backward compatibility for free when the competitor wants like 30$ to rent an 8 year old game IMO is great.

It wasn't great news for 360/PS3 because everyone expected (and still do) this kind of features on consoles.

Why wouldn't people be excited about BC? There's a lot of different scenarios: people selling their old consoles (there were good trade values at launch), people not having unlimited space to have many consoles hooked up, people having a less capable 360 than their One as for hard drive space (let's not forget that up until a few months ago your 360 couldn't exceed 500Gb storage, whereas the One can easily have multiple 4TBs hooked up), and more.

Also, what if you do have a 360 hooked up, why wouldn't it be an advantage to play on the One? Faster loading times, all the One capabilities (streaming, screenshots, videos, snap, etc.) yet all of this without denying the users any of the 360 functions (online play remains too), not to mention you're safeguarding your disc by making a digital download of the game and only using the disc for the check. Plus almost everyone will agree that the One controller is even better than the already excellent 360 one. Is BC a reason to buy an Xbox One? Not per se, no, but if you know that down the line just about any game you own will be compatible (except for delisted ones and those that require 360 peripherals to be used), those with a decent 360 library will definitely make the jump more easily. Also, if you're on the fence and never even had a 360, how cool is it that you can check out 10+ years of Xbox library on one console? You can find 360 classics for a few dollars nowadays too.

And, unlike Sony who presented stuff that's coming out 2016 onwards, MS has actual triple-A games coming out in the upcoming months, and I'm not even gonna count multiplatforms: Halo 5, Forza 6, Fable Legends, GOW Remastered and Rise Of The Tomb Raider to mention a few, so the BC hardly wants to hide a lack of games either. On the other hand, presenting trailers that you know will make the players wet themselves of games that, however, will probably come out in 2-3 years is a lot of smokes and mirrors, as those people who are declaring that Sony destroyed the competition during E3 still haven't got a clue about what they're buying in 2015, as there is no real exclusive worth awaiting.

So the PS2 and early George Foreman grills.

Sony phased out backwards compatibility because they had to cut the cost of the PS3 to save their disastrous launch. It wasn't because people didn't want to play PS2 games on their PS3. That is silly.

We always refer to the soccer moms on CAG. Well for me this is a bullet point for the soccer moms. Gamestop employee: "It'll play his old xbox 360 games (intentional omission of how many it actually plays). Soccer mom: "Then you should get that one because you have so many 360 games."

I can't multi-quote everybody that I upset with my last comment on my mobile so I just want to let everyone know that I own PS4 and Xbox One. Therefore, my comment has nothing to do with me taking sides and I think that the backward compatibility ruse is an analogue to Sony's indie game push. Not a large number of AAA games coming up on either side. I just wanted to clarify that I wasn't taking Sony's side.

That said, Persona 5 is the only game on PS4 that I'm looking forward to right now. And my Xbox One has been turned on more times than my PS4.

You're seriously going to exaggerate like that to make the Xbox backwards compatibility sound like a generous deal? It's $20 a month - that's for all the games, not just one - and it's streaming, so it's not even the same thing. You can play the games from any PlayStation device so long as you have fast enough Internet.

Do you not see the fact that you have to pay to play the games you already own? And $20/month (or $45/3 months) is quite expensive.

And you aren't at your data cap. I keep talking about this because of how easy it is to hit. I get 300gb a month, no matter how many days in a month. Let's call it 10GB a day. Right now, I'm at day 23 on the 18th. I really can't do any more games digitally until next month, where I can load up a bit since I'll be on vacation some.

I personally think Now is stupid. For me. Up until last week I had a 60GB PS3 that would play anything I owned. Thankfully, I also have a PS2 (the one I bought fifteen(!) years ago) to play my PS2 and PS1 games. F that streaming noise, I'll just go find whatever game I feel I missed out on and go play it. Do I get to play it with a great controller on a better TV or mobile? No, but I'm also not signed up for yet another subscription service. At least with the BC announcement, if done properly, I could play a lot of what I already have (and at least am still interested in) on one console. That's nice, and all the GWG stuff that I've loaded up on can play no problem, no disc. That's really nice.

BTW, the PS3 BC models were limited to three, none made after 2008 IIRC.

For the consumer, backwards compatibility can only be a good thing. A good game, regardless of its generation, is a good game, and if the ones at your disposal suddenly increase, that's a huge positive.

For me, personally, I'm an original hardware guy through and through. Even if that means keeping dozens of consoles (and cables, controllers, memory cards, etc) around.

You're seriously going to exaggerate like that to make the Xbox backwards compatibility sound like a generous deal? It's $20 a month - that's for all the games, not just one - and it's streaming, so it's not even the same thing. You can play the games from any PlayStation device so long as you have fast enough Internet.
Since when is getting something unexpected for free NOT a generous deal?

Does MS still require XBL Gold to use cloud saves from the 360?  Their FAQs still they it's required, but those could be out of date.  Backwards compatibility is supposed to be free for everyone, but unless I'm missing something, people will need to have Gold to make their 360 saves available to the XB1 through the cloud.

Sounds correct to me.

Also, the storage they allow for Xbox 360 cloud saves is limited (about 250 MB?). Some game saves are larger than others so I can forsee the limited amount of cloud storage being a problem too.

Yes you do, tried to upload some saves on an alt account and couldn't.

Something that isn't always considered is the room that those older consoles take up, be it in storage, inputs to a display, shelf space, etc. I've got a receiver that has spots for seven HDMI ports and I'm already just about at the limit.

If someone could send me an invite, I'd appreciate it. CocheseUGA. I can see what I have digitally and shoot you a code for something, I'm just not sure what I have.

I do have an unused code for Halo Reach. I guess I would have to decide if I want to use the BC, or pay $5 for the One version. I don't know what the advantages would be.

Halo 3: ODST is $5 for MCC on Xbox One, not Halo Reach.

I have a few of those digitally downloaded, I'll see if they're there later.
Is there a way of knowing if my box has gotten the preview? I asked the other day and mentioned that I had been invited by another member (and then again the other day) but nothing has changed as of yet to my knowledge. If I check the system software date will that tell me? Thanks.

Has this already been posted? Additional BC Games.
I think those are coming soon - not available just yet. Could be wrong though. If I put my Borderlands 1 GOTY disc in to my XB1 it should (eventually) prompt a download, correct? For those that are playing Mass Effect 1, were any of you disc based - or purely digital.

tl;dr
Is the disc based BC in effect for Preview Program peeps yet?

Also, Skyrim is just 400 votes behind Blops 2 now! And SC: Blacklist is still buried. :/

That could be a killer if you have to have Gold to continue where you left off for most games. Mass Effect, Borderlands, and many others would be greatly affected by it.

It requiring the cloud drive is already an annoyance.

In up to 72 hours you'll have to check for an update to your system. That should change things.

It's live for a few titles with a quest on the preview app.

Xbox will message you, may take up to a week to be accepted. I believe it took me that long

Since we're all talking about what most from E3 sways the consumer into buying an Xbox One and all that jazz, I thought I'd offer up my reasons for going out Monday night to buy my first X1 console. So here's my train of thought (in no specific order)

  • Backwards compatibility. I have an endless backlog on 360 and the fact I can play on the new system AND enjoy the next gen(current gen really) games all on one convenient system....huge selling point for me
  • Gears Ultimate beta. Only runs one week. Had to get in on that
  • The upcoming games! This is what ultimately brings people in to buy a duh, gaming system. Good games. And the ones coming out this year are all AAA that you can't play on 360. Proper Batman Arkham game, Halo 5, Gears Ultimate, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Rock Band 4, Star Wars Battlefront, The Rare Collection, Fallout 4.......that's a ton of great games. Like, 2007 all over again
  • The desire to have a true next gen system(sorry Wii U)
  • I had the money to buy one for $300(price match at Best Buy)
  • The want to chime in on conversations about the system. Whether that was online or with real life friends, that "feeling of wanting to be included" was there. Kinda ties in to my point above about wanting a true next gen system
  • The possibility I can enjoy the Oculus Rift and HaloLens in the future. VR and AR doesn't look like a gimmick to me. This is future technology that will have real life applications not just tethered to gaming. There's a reason Facebook bought Oculus for $3 billion. They're visionaries and recognize this tech is the future.

So that's why I got an xbox one. E3 and all those announcements/presentations completely convinced me to dive in. Only thing that's a bummer is it's taken two days to update and install everything. I have a slow connection speed   :wall:

As much as I hate to admit it, I think the backward compatibility is just a smokescreen to hide the fact that Microsoft still doesn't have a wealth of or a variety of exclusive games for the One. And did PS2 games fly off the shelves when Sony announced BC for PS3? Nope
Big difference playing SD games on a HD system vs playing HD games on a slightly better HD system.

Agree 100%. This is the biggest reason why I think this is a good idea for Microsoft and the consumer and why it will sway people toward the One. I remember playing my first game (R6 Vegas) on the 360 on an HD TV and being blown away by the graphics compared to my PS2. I had every intention to play my PS2 games backlog but when I went back to them it felt gross to play compared to the current gen systems. I think the only backlogged game I finished was MGS3 Snake Eater before going out and buying a 360 & PS3. But the graphical upgrade from 360 to One doesn't have that "wow" factor like PS2 to 360 did and that's why BC is so huge. I can play my giant backlog of 360 games that are in my opinion only slightly worse to look at than the One but both are HD games on HD systems.

I also hope this will kill and/or slow the awful trend of remasters/rereleases. Even with all its faults & bugs, MCC is really how a rerelease should be done. Not like Saints Row 4, one game with all the DLC, which I feel is clearly a "milk the consumer" strategy. I haven't played the GOW remaster and I'm sure it's great but why just the 1st game? Maybe developers will start making more, new, & original games (AT LEAST GIVE ME A SEQUEL) if there's less incentive for them to sell and less incentive for us to buy the "remastered/rereleased" game since we already own it and can play it on our One.
