Please note:

  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console.  Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work.  Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance, but DLC cannot.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold.  You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold.  Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

[*]All known sales and information on sales should make their way into the OP. Major Nelson usually updates his blog with new sales information every other Tuesday.

I don't think the Gold requirement is a big deal. For most people I'd expect the save transfer to be a one way deal, and I think you can use the cloud saves with Gold trials too. The only real issue is that not all games are out for a while for BC, but if you can just transfer everything in now and migrate them to your Xbone HDD then a one time use is good unless you keep playing something on 360 for now.

Agree 100%. This is the biggest reason why I think this is a good idea for Microsoft and the consumer and why it will sway people toward the One. I remember playing my first game (R6 Vegas) on the 360 on an HD TV and being blown away by the graphics compared to my PS2. I had every intention to play my PS2 games backlog but when I went back to them it felt gross to play compared to the current gen systems. I think the only backlogged game I finished was MGS3 Snake Eater before going out and buying a 360 & PS3. But the graphical upgrade from 360 to One doesn't have that "wow" factor like PS2 to 360 did and that's why BC is so huge. I can play my giant backlog of 360 games that are in my opinion only slightly worse to look at than the One but both are HD games on HD systems.

I also hope this will kill and/or slow the awful trend of remasters/rereleases. Even with all its faults & bugs, MCC is really how a rerelease should be done. Not like Saints Row 4, one game with all the DLC, which I feel is clearly a "milk the consumer" strategy. I haven't played the GOW remaster and I'm sure it's great but why just the 1st game? Maybe developers will start making more, new, & original games (AT LEAST GIVE ME A SEQUEL) if there's less incentive for them to sell and less incentive for us to buy the "remastered/rereleased" game since we already own it and can play it on our One.
Totally agreed on the remaster part. If you want me to shell out a considerable amount of money for a remaster, you gotta give me reason to do so. Sure, if I never played, say, Sleeping Dogs, I guess I could pay 40 bucks for a remaster that includes DLCs and (minor) updates. But certainly I'm not spending full price unless the game got a giant revolution going on (looking at you GTA V, not buying you again, nope). Or, alternatively, do it like MCC or Rare Replay: such an amount of content with multiple episodes that you just can hardly say no, regardless of how much it's updated (and in Halo's case it's a lot of upgrades, too bad it's glitchy as shit).

Did Battleblock Theater come as a Game with Gold? I don't remember buying this gem and got it as a backward compat game, and wow is this game fantastic..

Big difference playing SD games on a HD system vs playing HD games on a slightly better HD system.
Not to mention network features like achievements.. plus having the digital games at your fingertips is a lot different than digging through a box of old games.. this feature really is fantastic, the most consumer friendly thing Microsoft has done in ages and has really earned them some goodwill in my eyes..

Yes, 2nd game in July 2014.

To be fair about GTA V, first person completely changed the game for me.

with BC, (if I understand correctly), you can combine xbox one features with old games, like twitch streaming, game dvr, stream to pc (reddit has confirmed you can use 4 360 controllers on pc when streaming). not everyone will use them, but it's nice to have options

this also means 360 infrastructure will not go away any time soon, which is also good for people that hasn't made the jump

currently I'm trying to get into the preview program (pending update, shoutout to KurishMarurade), so I can play some mass effect! This is after feeling jaded from learning Bungie is screwing xbox users over for at least another year.

I can't project how these decisions will affect sales or the "console war", but as a consumer I'm happy about what MS has done/shown this year.

Do you not see the fact that you have to pay to play the games you already own? And $20/month (or $45/3 months) is quite expensive.
You own them in one format. That doesn't mean you get free copies of that game in a newer format. If you own a record or CD, do you get the iTunes version for free?

If $20 is expensive, you should not be playing video games. Period. I think the median income in the US is something like $40k. That works out to $20 an hour.

Since when is getting something unexpected for free NOT a generous deal?
It's not free. If you bought an Xbox One back when Kinect was mandatory, and then Microsoft released the system without Kinect for a much lower price point - effectively reducing Kinect to the dust bin - they took value away from you. If you bought the system expecting next generation games, and Microsoft announced that they were putting resources into making Xbox 360 games work on your new system, there is an opportunity cost there.

But let's take your statement at face value. If you enjoyed Xbox Live in the past, by your logic, you should still be happy with it even when a comparable service, PlayStation Plus, comes out and provides an objectively better value. (It costs less and gives you more games.) Microsoft added those free games to Gold, so your statement means Xbox consumers should be satisfied with what they have.

I hope that the BC list is deep, but do remember that licensing issues will be left up to the publisher. A company that is considering releasing a "remaster" version of a game is unlikely to allow it on the BC list for the One.

I don't understand what you're saying here. People can still use their Kinects. Microsoft is still releasing new titles, several in the next few months.

That's not even close to what I'm saying. I'm referring to the fact that you are having to pay to play the same games you already own. With this BC, any game that is compatible, and you own, you can play without worrying about an extra cost. Don't put words in my mouth.

Also, that is not what opportunity cost means, look up the definition before using it.

First part, I have no damn idea what point you're trying to make. I can put any music I want to on iTunes. If I want a better version I can pay $24.99 once and have it remastered. For my entire collection.

Second part, I love how we live in a world where no other expenses exist. Just $20 a month! Shit, I'd love to only spend $20 and have my entire needs met. $20 isn't entirely expensive on its own. But if I'm going to pay $20 a month to rent games, I'll do it through other means.

I did enjoy your pre-tax and pre-expense calculation of salary, though. Makes the numbers nice and round.

The fact that it's not even requiring Gold to allow previous generation games is amazing.  Why are some people trying to not appreciate how awesome this is?

Even better, you basically have a second Xbox 360 to use, so if a game required a second console to allow for two players or more, you now have a second console to use with a friend, roommate, significant other, and family members.  This is truly fantastic.

It has been mentioned before, but I recommend that you guys watch the Giant Bomb Phil Spencer interview from a couple days ago. Phil is awesome. I am so glad he is the head of Xbox.

https://youtu.be/Pjh1Uo_xaSQ?t=11635

He mentions that mult-disc games are probably not going to be BC. So no LA Noire, Max Payne 3, Lost Odyssey, etc probs.

Also, I am pretty sure most of the people voting for the BC are not very smart. A lot of the comments ask about patching the game, or bumping up the frame rate, etc. I am pretty sure some people think the voting is for Remasters.

I just read that the Xbone doesn't just emulate 360 games...it emulates the whole 360 console...which means, it should probably run all of the 360 flawlessly at some point. It can't be compared to the backwards compatibily from the 360 with the original games where every single game had to be worked on to run on the 360.

Up until Monday, absolutely no one purchased an Xbox One for backwards compatibility. As of Monday, all those people got backwards compatibility for free. It doesn't matter how much they paid or how happy they were with their purchase. It was never an advertised feature, so it is free to those not expecting it.

Also, you criticize Microsoft for putting resources into BC instead of new games, but isn't Sony doing the exact same thing? In fact, it is almost certainly quite a lot more expensive to build and maintain PS Now than for Microsoft to create backwards compatibility. Perhaps both are opportunity costs as you say, but it certainly can't be isolated to Xbox only. The millions of dollars Sony spent on Gaikai alone could have been spent on dozens of new games.

Lastly, comparing Xbox Live and PS Plus is a poor analogy for your argument. Both services cost money and offer similar things. Backwards compatibility is completely free of charge where PS Now is not free at all.

bluntly no point in MCCollection with backward compatibility announced original shit runs so much better
Isn't MMC fix now? I've been playing halo 3 and 4 multiplayer off and on for awhile now.

I also finish co-op Halo 1 and 2 with a friend with no hiccups start to finish on Legendary.

Totally support the MS decision on backwards compatibility. So much better than Sony's Playstation Now overpriced bullshit.

I do, however, hate the fact that early adopters paid for Kinect. I mean are there any new games planned for it at all? Maybe a few little features here and there but kind of sad that it's been dropped like a stray dog with rabies.

Funny the halo games that arevBC will still work better than the mcc
Eh? I have strict nat upstairs on wireless and I still get into Halo MP fine.

Maybe not the case with larger parties but I haven't had any issues with Halo:MCC since probably Marchish. Was it broken for a long time? Hell yes.

I also beat all campaigns on single player at launch and had no issues. Some of my friends did have issues with Halo 1 checkpoints (which were pretty much broken for almost everyone) and the occasional disconnect in co-op.

The game is night and day compared to when it launched. Is it perfect? No, but for the sub $30 It's been multiple times It's a incredible value still. My only concern is that 343 will stop doing the once a month patch when Halo 5 is out, because I still want to go into it for some Halo 2 Anniversary or big team battles and SWAT.
Is there a way of knowing if my box has gotten the preview? I asked the other day and mentioned that I had been invited by another member (and then again the other day) but nothing has changed as of yet to my knowledge. If I check the system software date will that tell me? Thanks.
You can try this per their website:

What do I do if I no longer have the message to download the Xbox Preview Dashboard app?

If you've deleted the Xbox Live service message with the link to download the Xbox Preview Dashboard app or it expired, please post in the private Xbox One preview forum.

Can you hook up both a 1TB external and a 2TB external? I'm supposed to meet a guy on Craigslist here within the hour to get a 2TB external. I bought some amiibo off him before so he's legit, but I've already got a 1TB. Wouldn't care to just have 3TB worth on my one

I find it hard to believe that most people buying Xbox One at launch were truly excited for Kinect. It was an early adopter tax for most of us.

yes...not much more is known though

they are still pushing/planning for kinect on PC...so we'll see how well that goes

and the fact that cortana on xbox really only works with kinect gives some hope (maybe not the right word to associate with kinect)

I wouldn't say "excited" but still hopeful that maybe something good would come along for it. My family used to enjoy all the Wii crap but never got into the Xbox 360 equivalent motion sports games. Guess I put too much faith that Kinect 2.0 may actually bring those kind of games back to life.

As a hardcore gamer, I could care less, but as someone who wants their kids to get off the couch (and, yes, we force them to do more than play video games), it would have been nice to see more support and maybe *gasp* some innovation.

let's go back to taking about games!

so this Sea of Thieves... not much info is out

1. Xbox + PC, cross-play not confirmed

2. Unreal engine 4

3. Captain Bones twitter account as promotion https://twitter.com/AskCaptainBones

4. no zombies (I personally can't play another zombie game)

5. nothing shown at E3, possibly more to come at Gamescom

6. you can apply to be its "retention manager", which people speculate means F2P... https://careers.microsoft.com/jobdetails.aspx?ss=&pg=0&so=&rw=6&jid=180714&jlang=EN&pp=SS

my own speculation: this is where Rare's experience with avatars and kinect sports rivals might actually help--player customization and expressive animations?

For those who still sit on SMITE beta codes and plan to sell 'em, trade 'em, or give 'em away to random strangers...

For those who are browsing websites to find cheap codes for SMITE beta (and they are brutally cheap, saw 'em going for like 10 cents)...

For those who don't even know what the actual fuck is SMITE beta and why should they care...

The SMITE open beta is available for everyone on the 8th of July.

This place has gotten off topic but since we are I just thought I would stick up for the Kinect for XB1.  Ya its a massive disappointment both with lack of support and functionality... but!  The most mazing thing that people don't mention is, I can turn my TV, Receiver, DirecTV and Xbox all on by simply saying Xbox On.  I can turn off all devices with just Xbox turn off, yes.  That to me is worth the price of admission.  Anyone else appreciate that feature?

This was in the comments section.

"What happens when the network is down... Let's be serious, it's not like the 360 has a catalog that would justify bwc unlike the PS2. And why would anyone want to stream older games to a newer OS. This is just a publicity stunt."

People have such rose colored glasses. The PS2 had a great catalog at the time but honestly most of the games from the SD generation just don't hold up well. There are some gems but the reality is HD gaming is the biggest leap in the last 10 years. I would play the 360 or PS3 catalog long before going back to the Xbox and PS2 days.

Xbox One Kinect is great. Most people that hate on it haven't used it. Kinect 2.0 is not the same as the first. You don't even have to yell at it, but a lot of my friends still do. At least they use. I think everybody I play with that has a Kinect uses it. I use it for every single game I play to record clips or take screenshots.

However it does have issues with properly understanding strong accents though. Hopefully they can fix that eventually.

There is absolutely an opportunity cost there. Are you kidding me? Microsoft could have done any number of things to make Xbox One a more attractive product: better sales, adding more value to Xbox Live, securing new titles. I personally would have loved to see a new Battletoads game. When Xbox 360 was new, Microsoft made big strides in courting Japanese developers, which is why many JRPGs on that platform never made their way over to PS3.

Consider these two demographics: 1) Someone who came into gaming recently through Xbox One or PS4. This generation of consoles are the fastest-selling yet, so there are millions of people who have not played and are not interested in old games. 2) The hardcore gamer who might have been introduced to gaming through an Xbox console - also millions of people. They played the games they were interested in when they were released and are looking forward to new titles. The backwards compatibility news has little to offer these large, completely opposite demographics.

Everyone here loves the backwards compatibility because we all have gargatuam backlogs, literally more games than we can play in our lifetimes. But we're actually a very small minority of consumers who buy video games.

Thanks for stating the obvious. I obviously meant that $20 a month is inexpensive even after taxes and other expenses. It's fine if you're not interested in the service, but objectively, it's a fair deal for a buffet of hundreds of titles.

FYI, you're also taxed on Jeopardy and lottery winnings. I don't want you to think Alex Trebeck is holding out on your earnings. Furthermore, you don't get the full lottery jackpot if you opt for the lump sum - you only get roughly half. The full jackpot is paid out in monthly payments.

You're right that Gaikai was quite a hefty investment. I agree there may be an opportunity cost there. I don't know what Microsoft's long-term plans for backwards compatibility are, but my understanding of PlayStation Now/Gaikai is that Sony is trying to position it as a Netflix-like service. (Don't say Gamefly is like Netflix - Gamefly is like Netflix circa 2004 when they were still renting DVDs by mail.) That if you buy a PS3, PS4, Vita, PS5, or if consoles don't exist one day, a Sony TV, you have the choice of not buying games altogether and can subscribe to a rental service for a flat fee. Personally, I think the technology is premature, but one day, as electronics continue to get popular, there very well may come a time when packaged goods are supplanted by online shopping and cloud entertainment, and Sony is hoping to capitalize on that.

I Got to say watching gameplay of that Transformers game is exceeding my expectations. Turning into a semi to crush an enemy mid combo looks amazing.

People have such rose colored glasses.
I've been playing video games since the NES, and honestly, I think at this point it could be argued whether the Xbox 360 or the PS3 has the best library of games ever, but if you don't think it's one of those, you either have VERY specific taste in games, or you're letting nostalgia blind you.

I think BC is great my backlog is huge so I'm pretty stoked about it. Anyone willing to send me an invite to the preview program? GT is Unflawledgod7

I think the game looks really fun, combat looks interesting and I like the art style and that they are using the g1 transformers.

yeah, I can't get behind this. I have a shelf full of ps2 games but haven't had the system for almost 7 years now. I usually go hang with a relative who does and end up playing ps2 games I never got around too. Some games are harder to look at than others, and some games have worse camera systems (this bothers me more than anything) but a great playing game never goes out of style. Also, weekly Cvs2 and Alpha Anthology sessions are great.

Backwards compatibility was by far the most requested feature on the Xbox feedback site.

So I'm playing plants vs zombies from EA access and we're loving it. If I decide to buy the game on disc will my progress continue?
Why not just get EA Access anyway? Not that much more than the game itself and, IMO, combined with all the other games, it's well worth it.
