Please note:

  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console.  Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work.  Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance, but DLC cannot.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold.  You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold.  Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

[*]All known sales and information on sales should make their way into the OP. Major Nelson usually updates his blog with new sales information every other Tuesday.

I still love how going to "known issues" on the 360 preview dashboard crashes it and kicks you back to the first screen.

And where is the April 17 date for goat sim coming from?

I did. The first person shooters anyway. The graphics on Double D XXL looked horrible and the game wasn't even produced by Croteam. I remembered that I really loved Serious Sam on the original Xbox so I will probably play 2 and 3 when I get tired of Spelunky...which means they'll never get played.
You can't go wrong with either game (Serious Sam, Spelunky).

I liked Double D XXL as well. It's the only game I know of where you can blow shit up by using five weapons ... AT ONCE! They really went over the top with the heavy metal music during battles so I can understand people getting headaches from it.

I also thought it was pretty funny - especially the sequence with the final boss.

Did that guys balls explode?? Brb gotta try that
Pretty sure they're being crammed upward, probably? I've watched it ten times and still can't decide what I'm seeing.

Fun Fact: when this move was featured as part of a montage on Conan O'Brien, a feminist blogger on Jezebel wrote an entire article about how it's not okay to ram swords up vaginas in videogames while footballers laugh out of surprise and shock. Yeah, it was crazy-stupid--and I'm not one to use the term lightly.

I think you are right, it appears she is punching her fist upwards. My question is what happens when she does this move to a female character?

It's the hand version of a "cunt punt," it hurts a bit less than having your testicles crammed into your abdomen, but they manage to get on with their day.

And then a month or two from now it'll be free with Gold.... And then I would hate myself for buying it. Like every other game with gold
If we dont support games we enjoy do you really think they will keep making them? If it becomes a game with gold I will be fine with it at this price.

Damn, I guess this $15 from pre-ordering on MSstore is going to be burning a hole in my pocket for a while. I'm waiting to play Metro on next-gen and 2033 was way cheaper before anyways.

Is Jewel of the Nile good? I bought SS3 and 1 and while ago but only started 1 really. Opinions on 2? Maybe I'll just grab then since we have the HDD upgrade coming.

Seriously?! The netcode is the reason I stopped playing MK9. Was it too much to hope it would be improved several years later? So disappointed if that's the case since online is all I have for competition since my local scene is into garbage like Smash and MvC3.

Ed Boon was joining some streams saying they will work on making netcode better, but he has said the same thing about older games. The rest of the game is supposed to be near perfect. Easily the best looking fighting game visually.

This. It's easy to say but I doubt they'll do much based on their and other companies track records.

Huh, that's weird. About two hours ago I got an invite to the Xbox Preview Program for the One and I never asked for an invite or anything either.

I remember we had a discussion about this a few weeks ago. They already made an official statement a long time ago that they will phase out the 360 in 2016. When in 2016, no one knows. Means NO MORE NEW GAMES. If there aren't any new games being made, how long do you think before people will have to upgrade or settle in with next gen, I mean what use will it have but to play older titles, and if MS allows offline play for digital games after they axe support. So they made 2tb support for the 360 so what, its just some software update stuff like they do every month.

I remember reading a while back about a guy who had just started playing wsop, and spent $60 or something for in game stuff for wsop, right before they shut down servers for it. Square is shutting down FF online in March 2016.

There will prob be another X1 price drop next year, prob somewhere around $300, then you can prob pick one up used for $200-$250. 360 will be no more and it will be inescapable. You can cling on to whatever time you have left, by hoping a company such as MS won't piss a lot of people off, and will extend an X amount of time for 360 live to go on, but as stated by Microsoft 2016 is it. How many iphone/ipad users complained whenever apple drops ios support for older models? Yet, apple is still selling phones.

MS will tell you to go buy an xbox one.
This is a topic that interests me, and yet after reading the latest posts it sounds like nobody is sre exactly what is going to happen with the X360. Yes, we know they will stop making X360 games and the online multiplayer servers will be shut down. That's a given, and I can handle that. But here's what nobody can answer yet: after 2016 will X360 consoles still be able to access XBL to download X360 games you previously bought or to buy existing ones? If you own multiple X360 consoles, after the 2016+ shutdown, will you be able to log into your account on XBL on any of your X360s so you can still play the full version of your purchased games?

If yes, then I can live with that level of shutdown. In fact, given my large game backlog and lack of time to play, I've stopped buying online only games knowing the servers will be shutdown long before I can play them. Any game I buy must have an offline single player mode. My big worry is that MS might cut off X360 consoles completely so that they can't log into XBL any more in which case you can only play your purchased games on the first console you downloaded them to, and if that console dies you're only hope is the web based license transfer option which is MS takes that away, then you've lost your games if your X360 console dies.

I was worried about the ability to redownload games, but with the ability to use external 2 TB HDs soon and transfer between flash drives and HDs, that should solve that problem. Still, I hope MS leaves the existing library of XBL games available for redownload or to purchase. I wish they would address how they are going to handle these issues, but for the time being I assume the worst which is why I buy most of my games on Steam now. Steam has not said anything that makes me think they will start to take away our old games because they are "too old".

I may never buy a Xbone. I don't know because I'm happy with Steam and my old X360 and PS3 games. I have no desire to spend a lot of money on the next gen when I already have hundreds of games to play. At some point a next gen only game may come out that I can't resist (such as Dead Space 4) but until then I'm OK my old consoles and PC games. I never plan to get rid of my PS3s or X360s. My #1 gripe about the X360 was the lack of cheap HD storage options.

You're right that someday MS will tell us to go buy a Xbone and rebuy all your games again on the new console, and then we can repeat the scenario in 5-10 years with the XB2. I've been on this merry-go-round once, and I know this: if MS (or Sony or Steam) ever takes away even 1 game I purchased without compensating me somewhow, then I will forever stop buying digital games from that company unless I have time to play them instantly. They may think that I'm renting these games and they can take them away from me at any time without a backlash, but if I haven't played 90% of my purchased games (not even downloaded them due to HD space nor loaded them due to lack of time), then taking them away from me is still wrong and I won't forgive them.

Online game servers will probably shut down long before they end support because many of those are not run specifically by Microsoft and the companies running those servers aren't gonna leave them up if only 1,000 ppl are logging in each week. With the way things are on Xbox one I wouldn't be surprised if they just let 360 games be downloaded off the same servers that Xbox one games are hosted on.

I agree that new games will probably stop coming out in 2016-2017 but that will be because the Xbox one has a bigger install base by then so they would move to the newer system like developers always do. Doesn't mean that you won't be able to download existing games though.
I won't miss not getting new games on the X360. I just hope they don't take away what we've already got. I hope you're right about still being able to download existing games.

I don't think anyone is arguing that it will eventually shut down. We're saying the chance of it shutting down in 2016 is very slim. If you want to base it off game servers, publishers like EA constantly shut down their servers for older sports games, but even then, usually the last 4-5 titles maintain online capabilities for a while. And the new Microsoft is making some great decisions, not just with the Xbox brand, they aren't going to want to face a PR backlash by shutting down Live servers anytime soon for a console that has sold over 80 million.
I've been thinking the same thing. I bet MS would love to cut off the X360 completely from XBL (so you couldn't even log into XBL on a X360) to save on server storage space, but the only thing that keeps them from doing that is the PR backlash. I just hope that enough people keep their X360s that MS won't dare cut off X360s for a very long time. Like I said, I have no problem with MS giving us no new X360 games as well as stopping any X360 sales or specials or monthly giveaways.... just don't take away access to the games we've already got.

Sorry, I can't say cause I'm not a PC gamer, so couldn't elaborate on the difference in controls. I do like tower defense games, and played the first DG on 360, so wanted the sequel on X1, but not at $24.99. I believe this game was only on sale at one other time last year for $12.49 50% off. I believe 75% off is probably the cheapest it's gonna get, and is a deal.
I loved Defense Grid (one of the few games I played in its entirety), and I'd buy DG2 for $6.25 on Steam in a flash, but since this sale is only on the Xbone and I'm not sure if or when I'll get one, then I'll just wait for a Steam sale. If DG2 were available on X360 or PS3, it would probably have to be closer to a few bucks due to what I posted above about the uncertain future of purchased games on old-gen consoles. Quite often I don't get around to playing my purchased games for years, and if I like a game maybe 5 years later I'll want to go back and play it again. I don't like the idea that we never know if or when our digital games will be confiscated from us, so I'm a Steam fan now.

In fact, the announcement about support ending in 3 years with the Xbone and PS4 announcements is what made me realize my X360 and PSN games could be taken away, and that inspired me to spend several hundred dollars upgrading my PCs to make them able to play the most recent games. Since then I've been a PC gamer buying Humble, Bundlestars, and Indie Gala bundles getting 5-10 games for $1-$4 per bundle. They work as well or better than the console versions, they are cheaper, and so far Steam hasn't insinuated they are going to start taking my games away when they feel they are too old. I love the X360 controller (my all time favorite) and have 1 on each gaming PC ($14.99 each from Newegg).

I love consoles, but for the reasons above I recommend those who care about being able to play their old games get a PC as well.

I'm confident Defense Grid 2 will be available on Steam for $5 or less in 1-2 years.

I got frustrated with Guardian of Light because my brother and I were playing co-op, got to this giant puzzle with like 7 balls that needed to go into receptacles, and the 6th ball glitched into the environment and got stuck. So we quit, started the whole puzzle over, and it glitched AGAIN. Gave up after that.

You can play the campaign solo, right? Maybe I should just try and finish it off by myself.
Funny you mentioned Lara Croft and the GoL. I bought it on the X360 and played it with a friend up to the lava pits level with the dragon (I think that's before the 7 balls), and it glitched on us requiring a reset. Played it from the last save again and it glitched on us again during that level. We gave up, went on to a new game, and then a year later Steam had a sale and we picked up GoL dirt cheap in a bundle. We then played online coop on Steam, never had a single glitch, and we finished the game.

They updated the xbox to allow 2tb

you have to format it again hence the redownloading
Where are the details of this posted? I searched on Google and saw lots of references to preview members getting the update now and the rest of us "sometime later", but nobody said when later is and there were no details about reformatting the HD. If I have a 250 GB inside our X360 and add an external 1 or 2 TB HD (I have a few extra and hope that at least some of them are X360 compatible), do I have to reformat the 250 GB HD inside the console? That seems unnecessary. I'd think you'd only need to format the external HD in whatever format the X360 wants which I'd do before downloading any games to it.

If we do have to reformat our internal HD in order to use an external HD, I assume we can still transfer our internal HD's games to flash drives and restore them to the internal or external HDs after reformatting from the flash drives? I have limited Internet data usage per month and can't re-re-redownload everything.

Well, actually you can copy stuff from your 360 to the external drive...but the thing is...the stuff I download wasn't on the 360's drive in the first place, my 360 ran out of space a long time ago, so all the things I download are games I never could download because of my full hdd and games and dlc I completed once and then deleted it off my harddrive to make at least some space for more new games and dlc.
That's what I had to do... play stuff and delete it, but eventually I gave up because I never had time to finish games. I'd play 1 hour and say "cool... I really want to play this" and never get back to that game so I didn't want to delete anything. Ever since my HD filled up (2-3 years ago) I haven't even attempted to download any games I've bought (or freebies). I've used my PC/Steam and the PS3 a lot more because you can use whatever cheap, large HDs on them. I've downloaded all my PS3 games because I bought a WD 1 TB laptop HD for $45 and Sony didn't threaten to ban me and my console for using a 3rd party HD (unlike MS). On the PC it's $30-$35 per TB. I simply refused to buy a larger HD on my X360 because I couldn't stomach $100 for a 320 GB which is still too small. A 1 TB HD might fit all of my XBL games.

Anyway, my days of buying XBL and PSN games except if they are dirt cheap are over until I know if I'm going to be able to keep my old-gen games. Call me Mr. Steam now. Sorry for the long posts, but I hardly ever say or post anything, so I've had a lot to say saved up. I'm excited for the external HD option on the X360... I hope I don't have to wait too long for MS to give us this update for their unspecial users like me. I wonder if MS ever noticed or wonderered why 3+ years ago I used to spend $500-$1000 per year on XBL games and for the last few years since my HD filled up and since MS announced end of life on the X360 my XBL game purchases total about $50 per year? Probably not. MS is a giant leviathan and I doubt the right tentacle knows what the left one is doing.

This. It's easy to say but I doubt they'll do much based on their and other companies track records.
If you haven't played much Killer Instinct, it might not feel too bad. KI raises the bar a lot. Expect 1-3 matches out of 10 to feel nearly unplayable in MK. Compared to 1-3 out of 200 in KI feeling nearly unplayable. Last weekend I got disconnected from a match of KI after 300+ without disconnecting. I thought my Xbox broke. MK is supposed to be somewhere between Injustice's and SF4's netcode. I expect more from current gen, but isn't unplayable. EDIT: After watching more, I'm being a bit generous. Much closer to Injustice, if not a little worse.

PC version is another story. Completely unplayable. Even singleplayer. Some people are saying Steam only released the 3GB pre-load, so you can only get to the main menu before it crashes.

Yeah, Injustice was terrible and I don't imagine they've done a whole lot.  The PS3 one I literally sold off when it was entirely uplayable online around launch.  The PS4 version was better (though still not great at times) so they probably did some work on it but they've had problems with it for a while.

I won't miss not getting new games on the X360. I just hope they don't take away what we've already got. I hope you're right about still being able to download existing games.

I don't understand what people were talking about the "New" MS. As far as I know this is still the same MS. Yusuf Mehdi is the one who made the statement, and as far as I know he is still head of strategy and marketing.

The IGN video got 30k views, which means either a lot of people didn't care to watch it, or just didn't care. It was 1 year and some change ago when it was news, I don't see why they would need more updated articles on the topic unless another statement was made or if something has changed since then.

They gave everyone a heads up, and everyone knew it was coming at some point regardless if they made a statement about it or not, so I don't see how anyone can make an assumption that they will change their
minds because of possible bad PR.

I've got a little over 50 digital games for 360, which are 95% digital arcade only titles. I've played more than 75% of them, and I usually do not replay a game once I've finished, so they are all worthless to me besides the ones I haven't had a chance to play. I'd say I got my entertainment and moneys worth.

To answer your question; You won't be able to get achievements, and your digital library online will be gone. It will cost them more money to run the servers despite what others might think about how well the 360 digital games may be selling in the future. With no new releases, no one 1 year from now will be going out of their way and running to the XBL store to buy a 5 year old digital game. I am sure that the majority of people will not be spending tons of money to purchase overly priced digital games (when not on sale), when disc games have been and will become extremely cheap used.

I have bought 1 digital game for 360 in the past year, and only because it was on sale for $4.99. and that it was pricey on disc. I will play it and get my entertainments worth, but no equity. If I don't play it, then it'll be a donation to MS.

I would have to agree with what someone else said though. It's coming so there's no sense worrying. Unless you keep buying digital games and not playing them, well that would just be a mistake.

...since online is all I have for competition since my local scene is into garbage like Smash and MvC3.
Your "local scene" huh? Don't mind me while mashups of Karate Kid and Fred Savage's The Wizard playout in my mind while reading this. Lots of denim jackets and gangs of kids taunting each other to see who's "the best", that's all I can imagine....

Nothing this week for me. I really hope to see a sale on DMC with GWG soon, Evil Within and Metro Redux have both been cheaper a few times now and will go on sale again, but both great games for anyone interested.

MKX is fantastic. If you liked MK9, it's basically everything the game was fleshed out more. I haven't figured out the challenge tower aspect yet, it doesn't appear to be as long as the one in MK9 though. Story is great so far, gameplay is tight, graphics are good, and the roster is hefty with 3 distinct styles to play on.

Net code yesterday ranged from okay to excellent. Mostly just okay though.

yea if evil within was $20 I'd be all over it, or maybe $40 with the season pass, but like you said it has been $20 used on gamefly and $20 new on amazon past couple of weeks. Should see it around there again sometime soon.

I never cared about achievements, so losing those is no biggie to me, but "your digital library online will be gone" statement worries me. What exactly does that mean? That I can't redownload my X360 XBL games any more because MS won't want to use the server space for old games (regardless how good they are), or does it mean they will be erased out of my purchase history like I never bought them and I'll be unable to connect to XBL and play the full purchased versions on any of my X360 consoles?

If I just can't redownload them, if MS gives me the ability to use large external HDs (as I hear will be the case) and I can make multiple backups and copy games freely and easily between HDs and consoles, then that would be a sufficient workaround. I still don't know when the general population will get the new X360 system update enabling large external HDs.

But if MS takes away my purchased game licenses or won't let my X360 connect to my XBL account any more, then I've effectively lost over a thousand dollars worth of unplayed games. I'm glad you had time to play most of your games and don't care about replaying them. That's not the case for me. When I started into XBL, I went a bit crazy buying games that were on sale until I filled up my 250 GB HD. Thankfully that stopped my buying spree for the most part. At that time I had absolutely no concept that sometime in the future my games could be taken away from me. I thought they were mine to own and play FOREVER (as long as I kept a working X360 console). When the announcement about end of support was made, it was only then (after having bought many XBL and PSN games) that I realized companies may take my purchased digital games away from me, and suddenly my XBL and PSN game buying came to a screeching halt. From that point onward I've been buying most of my games on Steam or in physical form (even if it costs a bit more).

Who would be running to buy a 5 year old game? Well, I would if it's a good game and dirt cheap, but now I have to add the caveat: it can't be on XBL or PSN because I don't know if they will take my games away before I get around to playing them in who knows how many years. With very few exceptions of games I intend to play in the next year, I'm waiting for clarification on what's going to happen before I invest any more money into console digital games.

I'm very simple. I like good games with good graphics and gameplay. That eliminates old pre HD resolution games, but for the rest I don't care how many years old they are if they are decent and cheap enough. I admit when PSN had the huge batch of games on sale for 60c to $1 each a month or so ago, I bought most of them, but losing a $1 game I never played is a lot easier than losing a $10 one.

The only saving grace (somewhat) is that I bought all of my XBL purchases with discounted XBL points cards (back when 4000 point cards were in the $30-range on eBay) and never bought a game more than $10. My average game cost me $5. This year I think I bought 1 $5 game on XBL because people raved about it. I still haven't had time or HD space to download it.

My 360 wishlist currently consists of the following XBLA games:

Constant C - $9.99 (released Mar 2014, not been on sale yet)
The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai - $9.99 (released Apr 2009, last sale Jan 2011, 50%)
Monaco - $14.99 (released May 2013, was free as a GwG in Sep 2014, I missed it)

Pid - $9.99 (released Oct 2012, xbldb only shows the trial so I don't know the sale history)

Xotic - $4.99 (released Nov 2011, last sale Aug 2012, 50%)
Exit - $9.99 (released Oct 2007, not been on sale yet)
Exit 2 - $9.99 (released Feb 2009, not been on sale yet)
Girl Fight - $9.99 (released Sep 2013, last sale Dec 2013, 50%)
Storm - $9.99 (released Jun 2013, xbldb doesn't seem to know it exists so again, sale history unknown)
Shotest Shogi - $9.99 (released Sep 2008, not been on sale yet)

Of course there's other games that I'll consider buying when they show up on sale. For instance I considered Abyss Odyssey from last week's sale, having never heard of it before. Backed out in the end. But the games listed above are those that I'm actively hoping for a sale on, although I'll probably cave and buy Constant C and Pid at full price eventually because I enjoyed the demos so much.

Just checked xbldb myself for Mark of the Ninja. Last sale was Dec. 13.

There are seriously a ton of great, older XBL arcade games they could/should put on sale. I'd love to see a "best of XBLA" type sale more so than retail games that we can typically find cheaper physically anyway.

I think MS is going to send a destructive ping to every 360 in the world on January 1, 2016. It will destroy the console. Anyone that is playing the console at the time will have their life energy drained and deposited in an account in the central bank. Then we will all be given 20 years to live and we can only add time by purchasing it from MS. That is, until Justin Timberlake decides to rob the bank...

It will cost them more money to run the servers despite what others might think about how well the 360 digital games may be selling in the future.
The cost of continuing to provide 360 content on XBL should be negligible as long as MS is running 360 services in their cloud.

It's a shame they don't do more of those compilation discs of arcade games. The previous versions would actually go on sale sometimes, and that way you could have a physical copy of arcade games (in the event of Live ever of being shutdown).

I think it's not that he wouldn't be able to get them but more that his gamerscore wouldn't update on his live account when he would unlock them.
I guess you would also miss out on achievements added via updates.

The bigger issue I see is if Live were to shutdown, which should not be soon, is what about games with issues that were corrected via patches. I'm playing through Arkham Origins and have experienced a few glitches, but then I read about the game and couldn't believe the issues people were having at launch. If you played that game offline without any updates you'd need to keep a backup of your save due to corruption issues, as well as doors, characters or events not being triggered for you to interact with them, and thus ruining the progression of the game, leaving you stuck.

I have a few games from this generation that I'd like to keep with the systems, but the more I think about it the more I feel like I'm just better off trading-in or selling the games when I'm done with them, as I wonder what would be the potential issues I would face with the games or consoles even in the future.

I still have my Sega Genesis and Nintendo 64 connected to a TV, and they work perfectly. But I can't imagine my Xbox 360 or PS3 working fine in the next 10 years, with or without patches.

I guess I wouldn't assume MS is going to keep anything running. They dropped support for GFWL and as far as I know most of those games are no longer available or playable on that platform. Some were transitioned over to another platform and preserved but others were just a complete waste of money and gone. This is the big question about digital only and why so many people threw a fit about always online and insisted this generation have discs.

On the other hand, all the content that I have previously purchased through either Xbox Video or Xbox Music on the 360 is still available for re-download on my One, so I know they are maintaining my purchase history/rights and not trying to rip me off that way with a different purchase on each console.

Finally, and back to my original argument not to take anything as a given that you will always have access to it - the music videos that I purchased through the Zune marketplace are still available on my 360 but are not considered part of my collection on the One.  So those are lost if I completely transition over, go figure.

I don't see why they would disable the ability to earn achievements on 360, as long as the Xbox Live service is still running in any form. Servers for online play, sure, they will go away eventually. But why disable Xbox 360 achievements, what's the upside?

To answer your question; You won't be able to get achievements, and your digital library online will be gone. I wouldn't go that far. Working at TRU you'd be amazed at just how many people come in for Wii stuff still. Our selection is pretty light and many parents are disappointed that games aren't really coming out of it anymore. The 360 will probably stay in this position for a while along with it. People that can't afford new consoles try to get the most out of the old ones they can afford. Even if they don't sell many digital games in the future, it pretty much costs them nothing to give people the option to buy them.

I think MS will still make a ton of money off of 360 Gold subs for quite a while unless ALL the third-party shut down their servers, and even then as long as Activision keep up theirs for CoD, people will keep playing. MS obviously won't shut down Halo/Gears and other first party games unless the 360 is truly dead.

I get the feeling as long as Phil Spencer is in charge the 360 Live will stay functional. Those early announcements we during Mattrik's reign, and even then I was under the impression they were just talking about new games being released, not online functionality. Sure the 2 terabyte thing is partial for the eventuality of it's death, but it's also throwing a bone we've been wanting for 10 years. They know they aren't selling many 360 HDDs anymore, and all of them come with 500 gigs now anyways. Giving the people with low incomes that are buying the 4 gig consoles the option to provide their own HDDs will probably help digital sales a bit too.
