Please note:

  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console.  Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work.  Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance, but DLC cannot.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold.  You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold.  Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

[*]All known sales and information on sales should make their way into the OP. Major Nelson usually updates his blog with new sales information every other Tuesday.

Sorry for what might be a dumb question, but I'm new to XBO. Is there a way to buy something (including free GWG stuff) on the webstore and have it not automatically download to the Xbox? Other than completely turning off updates as well? Ideally I'd like to download game updates, but not necessarily new games.

Thanks

I just want more rows on the "My Games" app, 2 rows stretching to infinity isn't helpful. And yes I know bumpers jump, still not easy enough.
That could be solved by getting rid of the app and having that grid of icons stretch downward on the main page where the pins are with sorting options and such to let you get at them however you like. They could even add the pins there to pin certain things to the top of the list. Lots of options available to them if they want to try to fix it.

With the current set-up, it should just be a grid of icons going down and going to the right would bring up the Library. Minimal horizontal movement and more vertical movement. Also offer a text list option, though I think Microsoft hasn't offered that since the blades.

Not to my knowledge. With the 360, you can manage your download queue from your account page on the Xbox website and remove something from the download queue after "purchasing" it, but I haven't found anything similar for XBO. I've had XBO GWG games randomly decide to download while I'm playing a game 3 days after "purchasing" it. It's weird.

Lmao at the people that were like "Arkham Knight" and "Fallout 4". Was the only other game you played The Witcher 3?
Arkham Knight had a horrible storyline and an undefiniive ending. It's like all movies, TV shows, books and games anymore. They'll tell you this is the end of a series, but then make sure to give as ambiguous of an ending as possible to make sure that if they feel lazy and greedy they can just go back to the cash game they said they were artistically done with.

Also, Rocksteady spent so much time designing a Batmobile that was redundant since you can cape glide around Gotham faster than you can drive it. As a resullt they have to force sections on the gamer to use it, interrupting pace and creating boring 'boss battles' that play out like battle mode in Mario Kart 64. Also, nothing really stood out artistically in the game. I remember the layouts of Asylum and City. The art design I paid little attention to. In this game you rush by it, and all of it basically looks the same color palette and layout. Even the high rises only serve to just be an interruption to your gliding.

Similar to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, they force in a backstory that was absent from previous knowledge in the series, and have to spend so much time building it that the 'twist' is not surprising at all, and illustrates how bad the story was, focusing on something that detracted from all other characters and villains. Also, basically bringing characters back from the dead in the game means they copped out to big decisions throughout the game and series.

It was sloppy and grossly disappointing. And an overpriced Season Pass for a single player game that offered next to nothing in content, and basically resolved partial storylines that were missing from the rushed game is insulting to gamers.

But continue laughing at people for not liking the games you enjoy...

---

Gears of War: Ultimate Edition was a very close 2nd for me. The lack of any sort of real advancement in the online experience does not make it an Ultimate title. And the later changes they made to matchtypes available across servers are absurd. Throwing prettier graphics and some dedicated servers is not the only changes that should have been made to the original game. Gears of War: Fairly Lazy Edition must have been saved for a later rehash title.

And companies need to stop saying that Betas and Demos do not represent their final product, when most of the time they are exactly how the game will play after release, glitches and errors included.

Dang, bought Dying Light before the year ended but purchase confirmation email says it was purchased Jan 1.  I guess I'm not getting that 5% Xbox rewards back.

Slow day?

I have to admit that if Gotham weren't so beautiful to look at and if Mark Hamill hadn't been in the game, AK would have been a massive letdown. But there was just enough of it that was satisfying to still be one of the best games of the year. The Tankmobile is one of the worst designed pieces shit ever though. Thing handled like a goddamn nightmare and the unending hordes of tank battles were infuriating.

WIth the time it takes to install while online.. I thought they were downloading most of the game.
Specifically with Halo 5
Yes, that's how it works. If you're online when you install from a disc, it just downloads the whole thing. It's to prevent disc read errors or corrupted data I suppose, but for most people it just takes longer.

Doubt the online pass for Dirt will go free. The issue with 3 is that they modified the on demand version to take the pass out for GwG. If Showdown always had a seperate pass then I'm fine with it (heard bad things and will stick to 3 if I want to play one of them).

Late to the party, but what the heck...

Most disappointing: N4S Rivals.

Most played: ESO.

Best? Too hard, I'll just critique other people's choices..

Ori: It's just a platformer. Have these been so bad recently that a decent one shines like a diamond?

Destiny: TKK made the gameplay a lot more fun for me, but taking out adjustable difficulty and replacing Da Dinkles kind of ruined it for me. I never understood the hate, the raw audio leak was pretty rough - but a little bit of effects and I thought it sounded like a robot, which the character is.

ESO: I had friends to roll to 50 with so it was a blast. The pvp is pretty great. I don't know why it's so hated by Skyrim fans. Did you miss having potions, abilities, and equipment swapping all cluttered into one shortcut list? Maybe it was the lack of dragons flying backwards, or making horses unable to run up sheer cliffs. I know if I make a heroic fantasy game, the horses are gonna be the best climbers ever. I realized in writing this I can't think of any good reason not to call it my GotY, so I guess it is.

Picked up Dying Llight (finally) and Alien Isolation Complete

Figured thats the cheapest imma find dying light for now and 10 bucks for alien and all the dlc seems like a perfect deal

Might get Octodad but idk seems like it can be a possible GwG sometime

Diablo 3 might be my last pick before the deal is done

It's hard to argue against Witcher 3 being GOTY. Every side quest mattered and had a cool story. Compared to any other open world RPG it was mind boggling g

Too bad the combat just wasn't that interesting. Hence blood borne being a close contender for top spot.

nobody said you had to like the game, it's just bizarre to think it's the worst game of the year

calling it the worst game you played this year would be called a "click bait" article if you wrote for a gaming website

gears of war ultimate edition is a remaster (ie new paint job) of a 10 year old game so i don't know what anybody expected from that

Did my list on Giant Bomb...

http://www.giantbomb.com/profile/kanerobot/lists/goty-2015/354341/

But here's the quick version:

1. Super Mario Maker

2. Rise of the Tomb Raider

3. Halo 5

4. Witcher 3

5. Mortal Kombat X

6. Ori and the Blind Forest

7. Call of Duty BO 3

8. Transformers Devastation

9. Toy Soldiers War Chest

10. Rock Band 4

Didn't play MGS V. Didn't want to play Fallout 4.

Arkham Knight I'm on board with was being kind of disappointing, but it was probably still in my top 15 since I just didn't play that many new games this year.

Also, it might be nice if people could understand the difference between 'worst' and 'most disappointing.' Also, an absolute versus the roster that you have personal experience with.

For example, Rare Replay is not a worse game than Deer God. I just had the sense not to play the latter.

Didn't play MGS V. Didn't want to play Fallout 4.
I really didnt want to play Fallout 4 either. I didnt care for Fallout 3. I bought it only because Best Buy had the $10 back etc etc on it. I am glad I did. Most fun game I have played all year long. Although, I didnt like most of the games in your list so maybe you wont like Fallout 4 even if you did play it.

Tomb Raider is just so awesome.

I just got to the Soviet Installation and my eyes nearly bulged out of the sockets when I saw how many goddamn collectibles there were. This is just cruel, Crystal Dynamics. There's like 150 collectibles on this one map lol

Me too, except I almost felt too overwhelmed. Really enjoying the game but haven't played since I reached that point

Wait till you get to Geothermal Valley, then you'll hate them more.

This month is my girl's bday and Xbox sent her this email:

We know it isn’t a lot, but hopefully we made you smile. After all, we remembered. That’s more than we can say about SOME of our friends. And writing 'HBD' on someone's wall doesn't count.

We’ll spell it out for you. HAPPY BIRTHDAY  And the next time you feel like no one cares, remember that WE do.

Best wishes,

I've been spending today going through my 360 backlog. Yes, I said 360. After playing Pure this morning, I decided to plumb some of the hidden gems I already owned...and some that are the opposite of hidden gems. I picked several games to play today. Most were unopened.

Unreal Tournament III - Forget the single player mode. I could play this game all day in multiplayer with bots only. Never gets old to me.

Culcept Saga - Great cross between Monopoly and Magic: The Gathering, but I got my ass kicked by the computer on the first board. I will likely return to this one again before the end of the night. The matches last a long time though.

Timeshift - Was still sealed from a Sears clearance years ago. Remember when Sears sold video games? Pepperidge Farm remembers. But now, I realize why this game was so cheap. It's a scripted game that bills itself as being a first person shooter with time travel elements. It's so scripted that the game won't progress forward until certain conditions are met, yet the level design is so poor that it's at times so confusing to figure out where to go next that I just gave up. I got so frustrated that I never unlocked the time travel abilities. I might replay this on easy since the reviews mention all the cool things you can do like stopping time and dropping a grenade into a group of soldiers.

The others are as follows:

Earth Defense Force 2017
Fuse
Monster Madness
Operation Darkness
Remember Me
Sega Rally Revo
Soldier of Fortune: Payback
Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 (to cleanse my palette)
Worms Collection

I just want more rows on the "My Games" app, 2 rows stretching to infinity isn't helpful. And yes I know bumpers jump, still not easy enough.
Yeah, a scalable viewing of your game library, like on 3DS, would be preferred for the next update. The 360 is the same, one long ass list that you have to scroll through, at least the Xbox One's list gives you two games per column but it still needs work.

Happy New Year all. Jan 1st, time to head to Xbox Rewards to do that survey and bank those 250 credits. Don't have any other rewards credits there but I think it's not time for the previous month's promo yet.

Yeah, I got that on one of my accounts. Not even a crappy print out birthday cake this year. :(

Halo 5 Digital Deluxe is $49.99 at MS Store right now. (Includes REQ packs and Fall of Reach digital series. Typically $89.99.)

Tempting for $40 after diabetes code, but the LE I already have has a different disc than the vanilla version.

Played some Adventures of Van Helsing. I'm enjoying it, but it's rough around the edges. The inventory menu controls are bad, as they try to do it like Diablo III with it using the stick to select categories. It's so finicky that it's more of a frustration than a convenience. It took a while to get used to the rest of the menus, which aren't laid out very well so I just do a trip through them every time I think something leveled up. They use the left trigger for selecting doors to move through, picking up loot, talking to characters, and other things that doesn't work that well. I get that they don't want to tie it to an action button, but that's why it shouldn't use that action when there's an item highlighted. The combat is decent enough, though it's not that good at aiming at the next nearest enemy in sight in the direction I'm facing like Diablo does really well.

The other weird thing is that they only offer one class with the game and the other two are paid DLC despite the fact that I'm getting a decent amount of loot for those classes in the base game, which I'm not a fan. Looking up the prices, the other two classes are $4 each and they were handled the same way on PC, so this at least wasn't changed because it launched with GWG.

I didn't mind the class thing too much because each class can be played in very different ways. My friend is a ranged dps and I am melee dps. We had problems with the game crashing a lot though. After one of the crashes, the game reset his story progress to an earlier point so, even though he kept his character, we were not able to play together.

Just found out that the Endurance Mode for Rise of the Tomb Raider is now live. So those who bought the Deluxe Edition or Season Pass might want to download this now! I bought the Deluxe Edition rather than the regular vanilla digital version from the sale solely for this. My body is ready! Question is, is Lara's body ready?

Not until someone extracts her 3d mesh.

Singularity is a MUCH better FPS with time control powers.

some people go out of their way to hate whatever is popular

my worst game this year? tony hawk's pro skater 5 stands out, i didn't play any of the bad games that were GWG
I said AK not because it was popular, I was just bored. It felt more of the same, but I still completed it since I had no interest in anything else at the time.

Just because a person has a different opinion on a game doesn't make them a hipster nor does liking something popular make people sheep. It's just opinions.
