Please note:

  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console. Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work. Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance, but DLC cannot.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold. You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold. Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

Lets be honest though, its not like you are unbiased. I may not be smart but even I can see that. :D

Had the dude said MS sucks balls or QB is a shit game, you'd not have corrected him or even cared to reply. You are biased against MS and some of us biased towards. Just saying...

And please dont make the salt joke, its getting old.
We're all biased. That's what opinions are. The things I've played, enjoyed, disliked, and such have influenced my tastes have shaped my opinions. The same goes for everybody. There's nothing wrong with that. If you're implying something more than that, feel free to explain.

I'm not against MS in any way. I like and play my Xbox One a lot, but it has some issues and such that I don't hesitate to talk about when necessary. I hope every week there are awesome deals on XBL stuff so I have more reasons to keep playing the games, but like everybody else here, that's a futile quest for the most part. The same goes for all of my other consoles. I've often tried to have discussions about things I do or don't agree with others about on this site to further my own learning about other people's views, which sometimes leads to anger and misunderstandings about my intention. So don't try to pull the "you wouldn't say anything if they were shitting on the game, etc" crap on me.

I replied because people have a really strange response to reviews where there are supposedly "right" and "wrong" reviews like people aren't allowed to have a different opinion or they're bought off or a troll or whatever dumb reason they come up with to justify their dislike of somebody that isn't echoing their own personal opinions or assumptions. I really don't care what game or publisher is behind the game, as I've said as much in the other threads when it's been warranted. Feel free to take your console warrior stuff elsewhere.

What's wrong with salt that isn't wrong with any other tired old thing that's dragged through mud, water, dirt, and many other unmentionable things constantly around here?

Yeah, that's a fair point about salt, I'll take that back if you don't mind.

SOB, I just had the adapter cable from my headset adapter go out, so I thought I was being slick by ordering a handful of adapters from monoprice for $0.38 each. OF COURSE they're not 4-pin and as far as I can tell monoprice doesn't make a 4-pin.
My adapter cable died a few months ago and I replaced it with this one from amazon. I recommend it, it's a braided cable and the 3.5mm side is angled which is nice.

I'm curious to why you were so disappointed in it? I'm having a blast with it and the story is super engaging!
bad gameplay

same generic enemies over and over again

graphics that look washed out

too much searching for the narrative notes to reveal all the story and character details which you have to read unlike alan wake

live action show should've been shorter cut scenes

main character is a bad actor, has an annoying voice, runs like a girl, and can't grow a beard

i loved alan wake, i really wish remedy made alan wake 2 instead of this game

Not sure how you didn't know you wouldn't like it. It looks like a game I would hate so I didn't buy it. With how many previews and YouTube videos games get these days...
actually it looks a lot like a game i would like, that's why i bought it on day 1

i don't watch youtube playthroughs, it spoils the game and it's boring to watch other people play video games

i watch and read reviews, it was a game i was highly anticipating for 3 years and the reviews seemed to be mixed, i hoped for the best and it didn't work out

"main character is a bad actor, has an annoying voice,  runs like a girl,  and can't grow a beard"
steven seagal was in quantum break?

Someone in the reviews mentions not being able to mute yourself while using a similar cable, and recommended the official PS4 talkback controller that has volume controls built in. Assuming you have a headset with volume controls, do they work fine using this cable? Looks like I'm going to give this one a shot

The mute & game volume works fine, but I have the MS headset adapter so I adjust volume & mute from that, not the inline controls.

Also the reason I still use a 360 headset instead of "upgrading" to an xbox one headset is so I can listen to 2 audio streams. I plug the usb + 3.5mm into my PC and the 2.5 into controller. You can control volume from both on the inline controls and that way I can listen to a podcast or watch a show while mopping up achievements or collectibles in games.

I don't know about you but I usually HATE linear highly-scripted "experiences" but I'm loving Quantum Break. I just finished Act 2 and think it's well worth the purchase.

It seems like there's a lot of people (not necessarily in this thread) that want QB to become the new cool thing for the internet to hate.

I'm really enjoying it. I know I'm nearing the end and don't want it to be over
Yeah ... apparently there is no room in gaming for ANY single player experiences in some people's minds. Every game released should (by their logic) be a seizure-inducing, ADHD multiplayer lobby based twitch fest with COD kiddies screaming profanities into the mic. Lest they forget, though, that there is an entire generation of gamers (with access to discretionary income) that may want some balance in their gaming.

Dirt Rally was aimed at Codemasters' hardcore fans that have been wanting them to go back to their roots for rally games.
This puts me in the position of: I'll by whichever hits $20 first.

I love rally so much but in my minuscule amount of free time I need a game that is approachable in 1-2 hour bursts.

I don't think anyone is arguing that people can't have different opinions/perspectives. I think the argument is against clickbait reviews/reviewers, i.e. writing extremely negative (or, one would suppose, positive) reviews not to capture your experience/perspective, per se, but in a sensational way to drive traffic to your website.

Is story mode locked in DoA5: Core Fighters?
Yes.

Don't be so salty

I just recently bought this --> https://www.radioshack.com/products/radioshack-mobile-headset-to-pc-converter?variant=5717752517 and I recommend it if you have a Radio Shack near you.

It cost more than I wanted to spend (I really wanted the Turtle Beach branded one for $6 but it's permanently OOS) but it was on the way home and the packaging made it really easy to return if I needed to.
I'm not sure you linked the right product, as that has 3.5 in&out and splits the mic/speakers. I need a 2.5 plug and a 3.5 4-pin jack.

Does anyone here own their modem as opposed to renting from cable company? Trying to lower my bill cause Brighthouse is killing me. Any recommendation on which DOC3 modem to buy?
Went with the Netgear CM600. 24up 8 down

Not according to this thread. It appears to just be any review that conflicts with their own viewpoint is from a hack or whatever they want to call the reviewer.

Reviews are subjective but objective as well. Even if you hate a genre (why the hell are you reviewing such a game to begin with?), there are objective matters you just can not overlook. How it looks, how it sounds, whether the gameplay is functional, if the difficulty is balanced, if the story is coherent, if there's enough content, if the options are well made, and so on. If a game nails all these aspects brilliantly, then it only goes down to how much you actually ENJOY the storyline and how much fun you're having with the game. But if you give out a 3/10 when everyone else gives 8s, 9s and 10s as the game has tons of undeniable qualities, you are failing as a reviewer. I am a reviewer myself, and even if I were to get a game from a genre or a series I dislike (which I usually tend to avoid for this reason, else my judgement would be clouded by prejudice), I just can't overlook the objective qualities of the title. The Elder Scrolls is not my kind of tea for example, but I would never give Oblivion or Skyrim a 3 or 4 out of 10, because that would just be proof of my inability as a gamer, and my lack of understanding of what the game is or what it should be. You can love Quantum Break and you can even hate it, I personally did not play it yet so I will not judge it, but if you give it 2 or so you are either oblivious to the genre today's game standards and so on, you're just fanboying or simply put you are trying to garner attention with the negative extreme, hoping to generate a lot of clicks and comments when you in fact are aware the game would deserve more. Either way, you don't really deserve to be working in this industry if you act like this.

Interesting comparison between the Giant Bomb review account stats and some guy who played the game. (not for a review site)
I expected this to show a very limited amount of playtime, etc. It's funny how often I notice when I listen to many podcasters from well-known sites talk about game specifics, they always seem to only mention things that I see in the first few hours of a game. I always have the impression that most "professionals" just play the first hour or two of most games and then move on to something else but then many of those same people refer to those games as if they played them thoroughly and talk as though they are fully qualified to comment on them.

I don't agree with a lot of GiantBomb's review scores and also their review scale in general, but I at least feel like they are mostly genuine in how they talk about games. I am actually not sure I think Jeff Gerstmann should review games because I think his gaming tastes are bipolar and can change on a dime (almost as if he is inconsistent on purpose) and his assessments are often way too harsh, but I do find him interesting in a non-review setting.

Not sure if this is allowed or whatever in this particular thread, but here goes anyway.

I randomly reinstalled Skyrim yesterday and played it for a little while. I ventured into a giant/mammoth camp and as I walked up to it, a mammoth fell out of the sky and my game froze. Not sure if it was the glitch, not sure if it's because my disc is slightly cracked, but it happened and it's happened before.

Basically I'm not sure if it was just a glitch that happens with Bethesda games, or if I just need to grab a new copy. So if I have to get a new copy, I think I want it digital because how dare I have to get up and walk a few steps to swap discs!

Anyway, I remember awhile back on GameFAQs, there were people giving away digital codes for Skyrim and I was wondering if any one of you fine gents might have an unused code you don't want.

mammoths falling from the sky? that's woolly weird

I think the codes you are looking for are extinct but don't give up just stay focused on the tusk at hand

None of those are objective at all. Visuals, audio, story, content, etc. are all things that could go either way depending on your own opinions. The only way it could be objective is if you're just stating facts like "This game is running in 1080p at 30 FPS" to have the least amount of opinion in those parts of a review. If you really think that, then I can see why people freak out at reviews.

"But if you give out a 3/10 when everyone else gives 8s, 9s and 10s as the game has tons of undeniable qualities, you are failing as a reviewer."

This might be the scariest part of this whole thing because that is completely crazy that you're suggesting if a majority of reviews are within a certain range, the rest are liars or bad reviewers or whatever you're trying to see. I'm hoping that this entire response is my misunderstanding or something because if not, there's a lot of work that would need to be done to point out all of the issues I see with this.

If you don't enjoy open-world RPGs or Bethesda's style of RPG, it's completely fine to review that game with a low score if you can back up your opinions well with sound arguments. You probably wouldn't be put on the review in the first place, but it would be an interesting viewpoint to see argued well. It doesn't make you a bad person for disagreeing with others.

I'm not trying to be a dick or anything, so I apologize if it comes off that way. This post just fascinates the hell out of me.

Glad I have no data cap for my internet. 75 GB download for QB episodes is pretty steep.
I'm fortunate to not have a cap as well but I have slow mountain wifi

I couldn't handle having a full 500gig ps3 drive anymore so I caved and ordered a 1.5tb new drive for it

so I'll be redownloading for probably 3 weeks lol . Hopefully your net is fast for your dl

Gerstmann giving the game a 40 shows that the guy is a fucking hack, just read through it again and I'm not sure how he would even come to that score based off what he said.
Giant Bomb finally put out a video of Jeff playing Quantum Break and it's pretty bad. His complaints are way off and now that you can see him playing, he's playing it completely wrong. Not sure if that comes across for people that haven't played it yet, but it's not a cover shooter.

I have read several reviews that implicitly stated that playing it as a cover shooter is flat wrong. It is an action shooter that allows you to take cover.

It was hard to watch. Even worse when you compare it to other people that have posted videos of their gameplay. I'm not sure how anyone can take his review seriously at this point.

We should stop fighting amongst ourselves.

We must band together and focus on defeating the true enemy, our PC Overlords*.

None of those are objective at all. Visuals, audio, story, content, etc. are all things that could go either way depending on your own opinions. If graphics and sound go for realism, that is by all means objective. The amount of content, the general functionality and amount of glitches or netcode issues are also rather objective. I don't think that a game that is done incredibly well can earn an insanely low rating just because I am bored of it when I can see why it's good. Games have to be considered and rated for what they are and what they want to be. There is no point in comparing Final Fantasy XIII, Forza Horizon 2, Quantum Break and Mario Maker. Why? Because they have almost nothing in common. Different audiences, different targets, different means to offer something. In regards to Quantum Break, it is a linear narrative experience. No quality linear game came out in a long time that was way longer than that for example, the games that beat it by far are open-world experience that rely on repetition and grinding. The game does have some undeniably qualities, I have only seen videos but from a technical point of view (which includes graphics, audio, functionality, etc.) there isn't much to say, it's stunning. Can you get bored? Sure, there's games that other people rave about which I got bored of (Oblivion lasted me 20 hours or so, I was too bored after that), but me getting bored of that doesn't mean that I will start criticizing the graphics (which at the time were great), the amount of content and so on, because those are undeniably there. It means that I'll give it a lower than average rating for sure, but not a 2/10 surely. It would be wrong, and not because other reviewers said that, but because the game has merits. Certain merits have to be taken into consideration in my opinion, and even if I got bored of Quantum Break after 3 missions, I wouldn't be able to close an eye on many qualities that perhaps we take for granted, but broken or disappointing releases like Unity or Colonial Marines make us realize they are not that easy to pull off. Unless a game has game-breaking things going on that absolutely destroy any kind of enjoyment that the title might have in it, I don't see how it can get anything below 5-6, and this without having tried it.

It also took him 18 hours to beat a 10-12 hour game.

Just finished the game today. Finished at 96% done and it took me around 13-14 hours. Game is absolutely fantastic, show was pretty good. So far my GOtY.

I think everyone but one person here can agree Gerstmann is fucking horrible, and was way off on his review. Would it look bad if they let a more competent member of the staff review it and they give it the appropriate 3.5-4/5?

Guys, im going to share with you my age old technique of evaluating a game.

  • 1. First hold said game firmly with both hands and examine the box art .
  • 2. Flip said game over and examine the back of the game for hyperbole and screenshots.
  • 3. Ask yourself does it look like something you would enjoy.
  • 4. Take said game to your mama and ask her if she would please purchase it for you.

And if you want it digitally?

I REALLY like Rise of the Tomb Raider (minus some climbing BS) but I am just not sure if I should buy the season pass.  I can trade it right now towards The Division at GS for $32 (only $3 less than I paid).  I actually like the Expedition stuff but I am wondering if they will release a complete edition when it launches on PS4.  I highly doubt the pass goes on sale anytime soon. Decisions...

Those aspects of the game can absolutely be judged subjectively because the proficiency of the game at its visual quality, animation, framerate, voice acting, music, sound effects and all that depends on the reviewer's preferences and such. The same goes for the rest of the game. There's not much about any game that isn't subjective besides pure facts about genre, resolution, etc. and even then, they can be judged in a subjective manner based on expectations, platform, competition, etc.

It's sad that you'd sell out your own opinion of a game to just review a game like Skyrim, Oblivion, or other Bethesda RPGs to go with the crowd. Rather than give people your honest views, you'd just lie to them so that your review doesn't ruffle any feathers? It's supposed to be representative of your own opinion, not what everybody else wants you to tell them. That would just make you a bad reviewer with no integrity or maybe no self worth if you don't believe in yourself enough.

I'm sorry, but I read the whole post you wrote and found most of it to not make any sense. I just surmised what I thought your point was, so let me know if I missed the point.

I may be wrong, but I think he was stating he could see the quality and merit of a game, even if it's a genre or game he isn't particularly fond of.

Would it be okay if I reviewed Brothers and gave it a 0, even though I know it's not actually that bad of a game, just one I didn't necessarily enjoy

I have to say... I really hate season passes. Even for games that I LOVE, I have a really hard time feeling like the SP has a value to match the price tag. Sunset Overdrive was probably my favorite game this gen. When the SP went on sale, I grabbed it up. It added like 30 minutes of gameplay. When the original $60 game is like 20 hours and then a $20 SP is like 30 minutes, that shit isn't worth it... I think that, Mordor and Bioshock:Infinite are the only SPs I've ever bought - and all of them were on sale.
