Yeah. It was actually free when it came out for a short time...which I had forgotten about, so it was a pleasant surprise when I bought Museum yesterday and then saw Ms. Pac-Man was already owned.

The first emulator (NESbox...which does more consoles than just NES) since the Windows 10 / UWP update has been submitted for release on the Xbone. The world collectively holds its breath as we wait to see if it actually gets approved/released. The never ending battle of "Microsoft will never allow it" vs. "Emulators are perfectly legal and NESbox is already available on the Windows App Store" has been raging for days with no end in sight.

I do think the name "NESbox" isn't going to help with its chances.

I actually love FF13 and think it's one of the best games from last gen, so bear that in mind.

XIII-2 is my least favorite in the trilogy. The gameplay is pretty much the same as FF13, except that instead of six characters to choose from, you have two, plus capture-able monsters. There's not as much strategy to the combat, and the game is a lot easier overall than XIII. It is more non-linear in terms of exploration and optional events. The big problem with the game is that it takes the most nonsensical thing about XIII, the story, and ratchets the nonsensical-ness up to 12. Even as JRPGs go, this game is 99% gibberish. Still, the gameplay is solid, the music is phenomenal, and it has a killer ending.

Lightning Returns is a different beast entirely. The gameplay and combat are reworked from the ground up. It abandons most of the story threads from the first two games and goes off in a mostly unrelated direction, though all the main characters make cameo appearances. The draw here is the action-y combat, and honestly, dressing up Lightning in dozens of crazy costumes. Seriously ask yourself if you're obsessed with Lightning and want to spend time dressing her up in elaborate outfits. If the answer is yes, come on down! If not, there are many other games designed for sane people, maybe consider one of them instead.

Anyway, I love the series, but the first FF13 is by far the most polished and complete game. The two sequels are rough and cheap-feeling compared to it, but if you're into the characters and setting, they're definitely bizarre enough to be compelling.

Off topic but anyone know where I can find patch info for games on the X1? I saw Marvel Ultimate Alliance 1 got a update, but can't find out what it is. (Updated as of yesterday, not the DLC characters patch that was weeks ago.).

Ultimately I'm not sure it's not much different than a Retron 5 - it's a 3rd-party creation which is capable of running software but doesn't actually infringe on any existing copyright. While those clone systems can run real games, they also run flash carts, homebrew games, etc so the legitimate use of them is always up to the end user. Comparing it to a Retron 5 I honestly see no difference beyond the messy precedent it would set for the console market and Nintendo's likely unhappy response to it. I will be very interested to see what happens.

They didn't speak to any increased power of the console other than the resolution. Plus their wording that they are "asking 3rd parties to consider 4k support."

This new Pro console provides almost no reason to upgrade and how it was conveyed in the conference itself was absolute garbage. I was so hyped for this event and was left so bored and underwhelmed.

And if we are talking about the Slim vs the S, the S clearly wins by a landslide.

I watched that conference and my first thought was... 'Well looks like Xbox may gain a bunch of traction this holiday season now"

Well yes, with the Pro in November it does.

I figured the Pro was still coming next year like Scorpio. There's now no reason for MS to not blow the PS4 Pro out of the water.

 
If the earlier reported Scorpio and Pro specs were correct the Scorpio is significantly more powerful, but I would imagine will also be at least $100 more

Christ, already people coming out and declaring a "holiday season winner."

If that's all the PS4 Pro is going to have, Scorpio is going to eat this thing alive from a presentation perspective. They're going to have to make the price lower than they probably wanted if they want to look good, but as long as they actually show a convincing, massive difference between the Xbox One and Scorpio (unlike the Sony event today), they should be able to get away with charging 500 bucks for it.

Either way, this is going to be a good indication if MS actually learned anything from the botched XBox One launch, or if they're just as dumb as ever and just put a friendlier face (Phil) on it over the last couple years.

 
With Scorpio being out a full year from now it could be a competitive price, and bare minimum the specs seem to be better. I wasn't blown away by anything here, though when I do eventually get a PS4 the $100 difference makes Pro more appealing.

Personally I think it's pretty meh, unless you don't have a PS4 at all yet or are interested in VR. It really depends if studios actually take advantage of the new horsepower, which could be marginal stuff from third-parties. I could see many only adding in bare minimum stuff like HDR support. Better performance will probalby be the best consistent result.

They did, but they didn't detail it at all. Cerny said the GPU (or CPU?) is roughly twice as powerful as the default PS4, along with a higher clock speed. Those could easily BTFO the Xbox One S, especially since PS4 was already a bit more powerful than Xbone to start with.

They didn't speak of any of the pure specs, no, but they showed them. They showed games rendering and displaying in 4k. (Xbox one S can't do that). They showed the different between games playing normally and with HD Texture packs.

I am curious what you think the scorpio will do. It will be more powerful than the PS4 pro, but they are being built to do the same thing.

Agreed. No clue how popular 4K blurays are yet, but when you're competitor's low tier model has it, you gotta match it at least on your top tier model.

It's not yet, but 4k TV's have dropped drastically in price in the last couple months. You can get a 55" 4k + HDR tv for like 500 now, so they will be making their way into more and more households.

I don't think I have watched any Blu Ray movies on my XBox One or PS4. My wife has watch a half dozen on the PS4 when it was in the living room. We now have a Sony Blu Ray player there.

I get that many people still watch Blu Rays but I game mostly on my consoles. I am more likely to stream movies / tv shows then watch a disc.

I guess maybe it was the only way they could get the price down to $399. I guess they are banking on most people not caring that much about 4K Blu Ray support. More and more people just stream video. Guess we will see how it works out for them.

Curious though where you are seeing 4K/HDR 55" sets for $500. If it was a decent make I would probably buy it today. We are looking to upgrade the TV in the living room and put the plasma downstairs where I game.

Should we restrict them to 4 MB again so that developers are discouraged from supporting their games?

Now updates happen in the background so that I rarely see them in action.

I'd rather have system updates less than 1GB in size for the console every few months as opposed to a 4 GB or more every two weeks in which I see no damn difference.

You were talking about firmware updates? Gotcha. I haven't seen one in a few months at this point, so they've been doing a good job of putting them in the background. I don't remember Xbox 360 updates being fast at all, especially since they had to restart the system a few times and go through a few progress bars before they finished.

360 ones tend to be about 30-45 minutes as far as I remembered when there was the much hyped Fall updates or whatever. The One now though the install times on them tend to be just as long as the download for the updates so nearly two hours every few weeks. Plus I refuse just out of goddamn principle just go with the belief that always having my console on is the way to go.
