New hardware could mean lots of stuff. Could just be new colors of controller, a special edition console, or something like a X with a bigger HDD. Probably that Elite controller since it only leaked 2 weeks ago.

the externals I have still blink even when set to off

I'm not a heavy gamer so I actually turn off the power strips to my electronics in between uses as well

I have heard that leaving hard drives on can sometimes help them last longer than the on and off stuff

I think it depends on how much you use it as both could cause life shortening I'd assume given the situation

For traditional HDDs (as in, not SSDs), my impression has always been that the internal platters which spin and the metal components expand and contract with heating and cooling in relation to being on/off and activity level. Over time, the expanding and contracting of the internal components can contribute to a shortened drive life span, especially if it's a frequent thing, but heat is going to be the main factor in damage. Of course, they're designed to anticipate this, and I have 10 year old HDDs in my PC that still work fine despite lots of on and off. But it does increase the risk of mechanical failure, but if its well-ventilated, it may not make a difference.

And of course, there's always just bad luck w/ getting a dud, and certain models will have higher failure rates.

Letting hard drives run constantly vs. powering them down: There is no definitive research showing that hard drives which are powered off and on (whether it be sleep mode, turning the computer off, etc), suffer more damage than those running constantly. That said, theoretically it would seem that a hard drive being required to constantly spin up and down would not last as long as one constantly running. The reason we suggest this? Hard drives consume the most power when turning on, and damage most commonly occurs when powering up.

Still, if you don’t use your computer that often, you should use some form of sleep/hibernation to save electricity and reduce the hours your hard drive spends spinning. On the other hand, someone who uses their computer sporadically may want to set a higher amount of time before their system goes to sleep, otherwise they may be requiring their hard disks to unnecessarily power on and off frequently.

I believe my external HD is always on my XBox Slim.  No idea on my PS4.  Lately I haven't been gaming much so I totally shutdown my PS4.  Too many power outages in the summer here.

Drives are pretty cheap.  If one craps out I will just buy a larger drive to replace and not worry about it.  

I got a couple years out of the 2TB on my PS4.  It was internal on at least two different PS4s and the last year or so external.  

The 2TB on my XBox One is maybe almost 2 years old as well.  Got it got like $60 close out at Walmart.

My drives (I have two WD passports attached) will go into a "sleep" mode when the console is off - the blinking switches from a quicker blink to a slower one, as they are designed to do when a computer goes to sleep. I'm not sure if that is an exclusive function of the passport drives (surely not, right?), but I have two different gens hooked up and the both do the same thing. I believe I have mine set to stay on, but I will have to double check that.

This is great. Thank you very much. I am currently on a free month trial of gamepass and I am enjoying using it. I will purchase the extra three months for $9.99. Bomber Crew we have more missions to accomplish.

Well crap I can't get it to work since I have a free month trial subscription.
They should offer these deals to everyone.

My free month sub expires in 9 days and the offer is good for 14 days so hopefully I can sign up for three months after my sub expires.

I had just checked the site yesterday and the schedule was still set for the streams last month.

 
Deals are for 2 weeks so if your gamepass runs out in this time as does mine, you will be able to buy it. But seems like you can only buy one anyways. Does fit right in time with forza horizon 4  :)

Thanks! I guess I'll check out the multiplayer since I've received a bunch of promos and occasionally just go to the website to early a daily log in and have like 50 req packs. I'll try to take MCC out of the backlog soon. I have 2 months of game pass, so I could potentially run through those games (and maybe ODST and Reach?) unless there's too many games I want to play on gamepass before it expires.

 
I believe the summer sale will start in 3 hours because its saying on the gamepass "buy to own" thing on sea of thieves and state of decay 2 that the current price is only 3 more hours :D

You can't stack unfortunately. This is only for people who do not have an active GP sub. When you buy the first sub, it adds 3 months to your GP subscription, which makes you an active GP member. So you can't buy another 3 months. Only the first 3 months will get the discount.

I may as well chime is as a former fan. Haven't seen a match since 2006 I believe. Vince McMahon ruined it for me, him and the writers. Besides his own awfulness in front of the camera, the storylines they came up with were just plain fucking stupid. I watched wrestling mostly for the actual wrestling, not the crappy storylines they shoved down my throat. The whole Katie Vic storyline between Kane and HHH was pretty much the last straw for me. After they unmasked Kane and rewrote his backstory I stopped watching the TV shows, and only got the PPV's on DVD months after the fact through 2006 before I just didn't care anymore.

My externally powered drives are set to turn off. No reason to have them on since due to the crappy bandwidth cap I have I disabled automatic updates for games. Pain in the ass transferring over the network (FIX THE INTERFACE MICROSOFT!!!). I have seen them stay on though on occasion.

Microsoft doesn't use the right terminology, at least in regards to Game Pass. All their "new customer" offers are really offers for inactive subscribers. I've taken advantage of the $1 month deals multiple times, and can take advantage of this one too since my sub is expired once again.

I have a WD external drive I leave on all the time. The blinking light is a little annoying when my TV and other electronic crap are turned off, but otherwise I haven't had any problems.

Does anyone know how long you can stack years of Live right now? I'm at 2 years and 3 months, a year would put me over 3 years. I think $40 directly from MS themselves is pretty damn good.

It was moderate...but totally not neccessary. She was calling me "sweetie" and "winking" and sharing moderately personal information about herself. I was like, oooookay. How does she know I'm not crazy, or vice versa. I wasn't offended or anything like that, just surprised. If I was 15 years old I probably would have asked for her digits lol. Man, the internet has opened up a whole new dimension for the youngstas. I couldn't imagine coming up today with all these options and information (I'm over 40). There was no internet when I graduated high school. At least none available to me. I still remember payphones lol.

i actually preferred it for the story lines and loved vince until he bought WCW, but the katie vick fiasco was the final straw for me too

that was beyond disgusting and embarrassing

 
so the ultimate sale is going to be on over 700 games, assuming they are counting different versions of a game as different games, this is still gonna be a ridiculous sized list to try to sort though

 
Is that GTAV price serious? It was just $19 at Gamestop (digitally) of all places.

I can smell disappointment already. I hope I'm wrong.

 
Well strikeout on Forza 7...still $30. Should’ve hit $25 this time, but no, three times at $30. One more sale and it’ll be there (wishful thinking).

Still hope for a $20 Battlefront II
 
Good thing I haven’t stocked up on XBL credit yet. Have $15 from rewards so if I can have at least one decent deal please....
