Some notes
  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console.  Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work.  Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold.  You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold.  Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

[*]All known sales and information on sales should make their way into the OP. Major Nelson usually updates his blog with new sales information every Tuesday.
[*]ALL OFFERS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE! No information within this thread can or should be construed as accurate (or still valid), therefore ...

Ah, I'm not signed up for their emails so that explains that. Thanks
I’ve never actually joined TrueAchievements (that I know of) - do you have to have been signed up with them for the whole year to get your summary, or could I sign up now and get some play info from the last year?
Since this would apply to both of you (Ziggy, you'd have to sign up on TA first) :

trueachievements.com/gamer/(YourGamertagHere)/periods

That will give you a dropdown for "All of 2019" which will have the same stats as the end of year email they sent out.

(Alternately, once you're signed in on TA, click the profile icon, then the chains icon, then Period Summaries)

Not for me. The game I play most on Game Pass is "What should I delete now?" because I'm always running out of space. GTA is listed as 70GB on the website. I would gladly pay $5/mo. to not have to download or install anything.

That's cool, interesting to look at my most played months throughout the years, and how much total play time has gone down since getting married.

You’re in the minority on that one. I have 13 TB of space on my One X and would much rather have low latency and no packet loss by playing from my hard drive and not a server if I have the option. It’s not random chance that PS Now recently allowed users to download some games to play locally, they realize it’s the superior experience and they don’t want Microsoft completely eating there lunch.

I was in the PS Now beta.  It was trash.  Buggy and slow.  I have ZERO interest in streaming games.  I have a decent internet connection (And did during the PS Now beta).

External hard drives are pretty cheap.

Maybe not in terms of breaking the bank to have both but clearly game pass is the better service.
At this point they may be regarded similar/same, as far as curb appeal goes; but, gamepass is clearly better for couple of reasons:

a) first party titles are free day one.
b) lot more easier & common for gp to go on sale (or a have a deal).
c) changes to ps now seem like an after thought, almost a resigned adjustment because of gp. While this not bad for the subscribers, it's still based on reaction to what gp does - gp being a clear winner and a pace setter.

I'll wait for frisky and the regular PS fans to show how wrong I am.

Playing games locally is the superior experience. But it's not the convenient one. No one wants to turn on their system and be faced with a 20GB update for a game they want to play. And that's now - how much bigger will they be next gen? It's not a coincidence that Microsoft is heavily investing in xCloud for mobile devices and Windows, or Nintendo Switch - the last plug-and-play console - has already outpaced Xbox One sales at the same points in their lifespans. Sony made a big mistake with PS3 by betting that blu-ray would be the adopted video format by consumers. No one is going to underestimate the important role cloud gaming will play in the near future.

Because you still don't understand how it works. When you're cloud gaming, the single most important factor is your proximity to the streaming server, not your Internet speeds. So for Sony, that would probably be NY and California. It might be elsewhere for Microsoft and Google. None of them disclose the locations, but you can bet they each want to ram their respective services down our throats.

Holy crap you guys are nuts, a few of you got more than my lifetime total gamer score in one year!  Though I did manage to earn over 14K GS in 2019, which is a big increase from the 3K I got in 2018.  Part of that is because I've been transitioning from PS4 to Xbox though.  I basically just use the PS4 for exclusives now.

I understand it just fine. The Internet is still slower and less reliable then a local hard drive. Packets get dropped or show up out of order. I am in NY and it wasn't a great experience. I am about 70 miles North of NYC, 90 miles south of Albany. I am also not interested in Google's service either.

Updates can be done automatically. I have them set that way. Usually it works but not always and some games like Destiny seem to like to use their own update. I would rather Sony and XBox fix/improve game patching. Make it so you can easily say I am playing these 5 games. Download all updates and patch overnight immediately. It was annoying recently when for whatever reason a BL3 update didn't download. I ended up playing something else.

I just reviewed the list of PS Now. No way would I pay $10 a month for access to those games. How do they not have the most recent God of War or Infamous Second Son game (it is like 6 years old). Actually looks like Infamous Second Son became available yesterday. I am not waiting 6 years to play a game like that.

ETA: Looks like I was confused about Infamous SS. Infamous SS just left yesterday.

Man I finally looked at the huge sale last night... first I pre-ordered POE 2 Ultimate Edition and then grabbed Banner Saga 3 in the sale. I have a physical copy of POE 1 and was going to grab it for $12.50 digital for convenience but totally forgot and now it's like $40 or $50. Crap!

I bought GTAV on Monday.  I requested a refund since it came to Gamepass.  What are my chances of  actually getting the refund?

Sony made a big mistake with PS3 by betting that blu-ray would be the adopted video format by consumers.
...what? You lost me on everything with this one considering it is the format that won. And if streaming quality is dependent on distance that means many many people will never get a top tier experience. I get it's your preference, but we don't all make smart choices.

It beat HD-DVD obviously. But they were expecting it to be as popular as DVDs and were blindsided by how quickly streaming video would supplant it. You can stream from anything and not need a dedicated player or console. HD streams already match the visual quality of blu-rays.

Game streaming is still in its infancy. As it grows, coverage will expand and people will have faster connections. It still won't be as smooth as playing games natively, but most games will be more than playable.

The Gears of War Games always take a bit chunk of time out of my gaming time the last few years lol

The biggest leap ISPs will need to make for game streaming to work well is upload speeds. I live in Las Vegas which is not a small city and I only get 25 mb down and 2.5mb upload. Game streaming isn’t an option for me until the ISP can provide me a lot higher upload. I still feel lag just playing Apex and CoD online from my hard drive, I couldn’t imagine if I was trying to stream the game at the same time. I feel like it’s a long ways off for me unless an ISP comes in with a reasonable prices high speed internet with no cap. I could get COX cable w no cap but it would be about $160/month compared to the $45 I pay now, at that price I could buy another 8TB external hard drive every month to download another 100 games.

Edit: I just looked it up, for Gigabit internet with no data cap, it would cost me $150/month for the first year and then $170 after the 12 months unless I do the thing where you call into cancel and get them to give you the intro price again.

I wouldn't get my hopes up. I bought a game and it was announced as GwG within the refund window of my purchase but they denied me. It wasn't that expensive when I bought it so it wasn't worth my time to try more so maybe if you keep trying you'd get someone more sympathetic.

Procrastinated too long on the countdown sale and the rewards quest ended before the sale did, so didn't feel compelled to hit the $40 mark.  Picked up Middle-earth Shadow of War Definitive, Lego Harry Potter to double dip on the XB1 and Voodoo Vince.  Some of the 360 sales actually ended when the XB1 sales did, so didn't get Space Invaders Extreme.

Nope.

Just one article, lots of video comparisons etc out there. Same quality as just blu-ray would require 3x the requirements of the “4k” streaming services now.

Does it really matter? Not really. “4k” streaming videos are fine for 99% of viewers. But they are not the same as the physical copy.

This is annual and not all-time?

That is the equivalent of 13 unique achievements per day, for approx. 500 GS daily, every day of the year. Yowza.

Of note is that that article is a year and a half old and streaming is constantly improving.

My personal opinion is that 4K HDR streaming is a solid improvement upon a STANDARD Blu-ray. But a 4K disc will certainly beat it every time due to bit rate.

I can tell a significant difference though between a standard Blu-ray and 4K Dolby Vision streaming though, especially with that HDR color.

4K disc winner to everything hands down.

Inside was my only completion but I "rolled credits" on 27 games between PS4 and Xbox by my own count. :D

Since it's the last day for the app being on sale...I can only recommend the Dolby Access App for Xbox, with this app even cheap headsets and headphones sound awesome...also by using the app it feels like I get the full dolby atmos cinema experience. Sound is great!

So looks like GameStop confirmed next Assassin's Creed game is Viking based with Assassin's Creed Ragnarok. Maybe this is the year I'll go through all the ones this current gen I haven't played, which is...um...basically all of them.

I'm so stoked that GTA V is on Game Pass! I've never played a Grand Theft Auto game before and everything I've read and heard about this game is that it's the best in the series so I'll have to move it up my backlog for sure.

Odyssey is so good but I think the last one I finished was Black Flag.

None of this matters because we're all staring down at our phones while the 4k HDR TV is showing Netflix anyway. And the rest of us are watching Hulu on the toilet where 720p is certainly fine.

I can say that getting back to it so many years later, GTA V is still stunning for the world it creates and the amount of sheer detail that goes into it. The map is huge and actually feels like a living and breathing city. You can easily spend hours and hours and hours just exploring without really scratching the surface of the missions.

You're in for a treat.

the last gamers remaining on earth that didn't play GTA 5 are all in this thread
Haven't played it and don't want to...tbh was never a fan of Rockstar Games int the past and probably never will be. Same goes for the Fallout Games which apparently every single soul on this earth seem to love. ( I liked the advertising of the fallout games though, just not the games..)

You apparently have not been keeping up with Fallout 4 and definitely not Fallout 76 if you saying that...

Also I ain't play GTAV yet or RDR2, but I will say Bully and The Warriors still fucking hold up from Rockstar.

Ohh I did, played Fallout 4 when it was on gamepass with my second account, didn't find it enjoyable, same as Fallout 3 and even NEw Vegas couldn't win me over with different developers.

As for Bully it's actually a good example how most of Rockstar Games Play, just on a much smaller scale compared to the big open world games they are now. But every Rockstar Game "feels the same" just with a different location..and for whatever reason that gameplay never got me excited or even interested to keep on going it always just felt tedious...the only GTA experience I actually kinda had fun with was GTA2, the topdown 2d thingie. But Bully, the GTA Series until IV and even RDR will go unfinished I don't feel like coming back to these games.

And while we are at it, I also never could get into the Halo Games and I have all of them until Halo 4 and played them quite a bit, but they were still better than Fallout or the Rockstar Games.

Not trying to be all negative here though, on the upper hand I really love the Borderlands Series, as well as the Gears Series...and AC is probably my favorite Series of all Time (except for AC III and Unity lol)

hates Red Dead, Fallout, and GTA but loves soulless Assassins Creed

as I always say, some guys prefer fat chicks over bikini models

Red Dead 2 was no bikini model, she was an 80 year old Grandma telling you her life story a day at a time. Sure the fresh baked cookies were good, but was it worth the 6 hour story to get one?

That’s why I said there are a lot of other articles, that was the first I could find real quick.
And also said that it doesn’t matter to most people. But there is a difference technically between the two, they are not the “same”.

I prefer the disc, and then pretty much rip to a digital format... but no restrictions or requirements to view. (Internet, subscription, device limitation)
