Please note:

  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console.  Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work.  Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold.  You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold.  Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

[*]All known sales and information on sales should make their way into the OP. Major Nelson usually updates his blog with new sales information every Tuesday.
[*]ALL OFFERS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE! No information within this thread can or should be construed as accurate (or still valid), therefore ...

January completions:

I'm proud.
Right there with ya. I played a bunch of Overwatch & BF1 MP and started a new char in Dark Souls 3 which I've gotten about halfway through NG+ with so far. I beat the tutorial/campaign of Superhot like a month ago, and the closest before that I think might have been that Ben-Hur game for the cheevos. Maybe you could count beating Xcom 2 on Normal w/ save scumming, but it's not like I'm done playing it.

I dont see how you and others finish RE7 so fast, I keep getting turned around in the house. I just got my crow key lol. fuck those flys
Wasn't that scared after the first third. Alien Isolation was much worst. Determine to beat any game ASAP that I spent full price on, a list hailed by the CAG Jedi that are crazy enough to spend full MSRP.

My biggest threat to backlog is MP games. I'm always playing Rocket League or Titanfall 2.

Think we did that in the renegade PSN thread the year I was doing four a month. Certainly kept me focused and motivated but also led me to play a lot of crap that was shorter to hit my goals.
Yeah it was fun. I think one month we did get a plat in a game we started/played. I went back and chased down the Infamous 1 plat. What a PIA those shards were.

Not sure I would do the 4 for XBox One though. I have been alternating between PS4 and XBox One games. Beat Mafia 3 last week played some UC4 with a couple of friends on Friday and played some TF2 Sat and Sun. Haven't felt motivated to play anything so far this week though. Maybe try to start up something this weekend.

HIGHLY recommend Siege as I have said many times.

Also, are people getting Wildlands Beta codes? Said they were going out but not seeing many reports of people getting any?

Finally clearing out my backlog.  Recent completions for January

  • Mass Effect 1 - First time ever playing.  Went Paragon
  • Mass Effect 2 - Imported and went full tilt Paragon.  And all dlc (except that Cerberus character/squadmate dlc)
  • Mass Effect 3 - Just started.  Now Shepard can jump and roll
Been managing my backlog via  http://www.backloggery.com/TheBriefChef
Slow goings but going.  Upcoming marriage in 3 weeks is going to slow down that progress

I was curious how that worked. I don't remember how close I was to the 4th star by the end of the year, but I wasn't going to spend that much just for the extra 2%. Wouldn't have worked in my favor. My Rewards page says :

And the FAQ says (for me) :

I'd consider it a little odd if their FAQ pages were tailored to individual users.
That seems to be the case, though. I have the same text as you in both spots, except it says $100 instead of $125. I wonder if any current 4 star members are getting the offer and if so, what their amount would be...$150?

Don't feel bad. I only beat Crypt of the Serpent King and RE7, both games I paid for in full price. My backlog on X1/360 games still sits at 30+. Some games I took off backlog because i don't give a rats butt about them anymore.
30+ games is not bad at all! Mine's sitting at almost 200 and that's without a few dozen 360 games that aren't BC yet.

Funny, I was just coming to post how insane it is that I have 181 games installed on my X1 now. And 112 more ready to install. WTF?

Only problem is that it won't be on PS+ until next Tuesday after the MS sale ends.

Even though I haven't played it, I think I can safely say it's a pass.
Nope. Start the first Tuesday of the month when the store is updated.
i bought the game back around halloween

played 5 minutes and felt like an idiot for buying it
Another week of Microsoft saving my money.

Finally finished Mass Effect 1 aka Massive Dialogue Simulator
with 10 seconds of sex.

Booting up Mass Effect 2 shortly.
Mass Effect 2 is definitely my favourite of the series. The story telling, set pieces, characters and gameplay are amazing. You actually form a legit connection with your squad, which makes some decisions very difficult.

Damn. I just use an excel sheet for tracking purchases/completions.

I am trying to get 5k gamer score a month, rather than the counting games I complete, barely squeaked by at 5765. How do people do this?

edit: also I am not using any guides, because I still want to enjoy the games.
You scored more than me last month. Hit 5,553 last month and if not for going for the weekly bonus in GTASC (had to score 3,000 one week), it would have been a fair bit lower probably. :p

From what I've seen most people end up having to resort to a lot of shit but cheap games that they probably wouldn't play otherwise. If you have a giant backlog like most of us that can alleviate it some, but a lot of games don't have a good ratio of time required to get the majority of achievements and that hurts it. The other option is to buy virtually everything that comes out and stay up to date, but I assume that's a minority of achievement hunters.

I've never bought anything purely for Gamerscore so far so breaking 100,000 took me quite a while. The only truly bad games I played for points were free and didn't take long, like Ben Hur.

I'd say ask Jess Stryker for advice, she has the highest Gamerscore of the thread regulars by a pretty large margin.
As someone who's been in the achievement ecosystem for the past couple years, I would say your first 100k is probably the hardest. After that, it does get substantially easier. While gamerscore is easier to get now without having to resort to the terrible movie based games, you still have to be in a mindset so to speak. When I hit my 100k milestone, I had a goal to hit it on the dot with "A Monument To All Your Sins" in Halo Reach. That was probably the descent into the long rabbit hole to where I am now.

That said, if anybody is looking for tips, I'll try my best to oblige.

First thing to have is goals. The second you start creating goals, the rest of the building blocks fall into place. But a goal can be anything. Maybe it's hitting 100k with a specific game completion or achievement. Maybe it's doing well in a gamerscore competition, or even just being the best amongst your friends.

Competitions themselves tend to be a big driver for myself. Back when 360voice was still a thing, there would be weekly contests that could be set up. Being a member of the Achievement Hounds (AH) for a while, we would do a contest every so often with a number of them being for prizes (such as $10 in Microsoft Points). While sometimes I joined for the hell of it, other times I had the goal of being number one or top three. And while I have my spurts of going crazy with scoring points, some people are just insane even by my standards. I'd constantly have to put up 3k in Gamerscore just to have a chance at winning and even then it wouldn't be enough at times.

Another contest is the Great TrueAchievements Scoring Competition (GTASC). A year long marathon with weekly eliminations where the goal is to score enough each week to survive. Every year I tell myself I'll join just because and see how far I get. Then I get bit by either the gamerscore or contest bug and try to prove myself in some way. Ended up with a goal of top 50 last year when I just fell shy of (ended 56 out of 2k+ iirc).

Probably my favorite style of competition is when on TA somebody creates a goal of surpassing someone else. I've gone back and forfth with a few different people back in the AH days and one guy has one against me presently. I personally find joy in trying to hold someone off from trying to surpass me. And while he has made up ground since his goal was created, I don't intend ti make it easy for him.

While I don't know of any groups presently, I was part of a group where we would mail each other easy 1k games so the game would only cost us the price of shipping. Way we did it was one guy played a game and as he completed it, he'd be given an address to send to someone else in the group. Group was probably 50-75 people large, maybe even bigger when the group died. Got a lot of my terrible game completions from them. Stuff like Hannah Montana, various movie games, etc. Which brings me to my next point, have no shame in what you play. :p

People say you have to play terrible games as well to have a high gamerscore and while that may have been true back in the day (outside of just playing A LOT), I don't think that's as true today. Sure there's terrible games still being made such as Energy Cycle (which is practically a 1k gamerscore micro transaction), but there's a lot of good games which are easy and fairly quick 1ks. The TellTale games, FireWatch, Brothers, etc. Admittedly good is subjective, but I tend to find enjoyment in the majority of what I play. Even the Jurassic Park game that got crapped on the other week I didn't think was THAT bad. But bad is subjective as well and I've played my share of TERRIBLE games.

I think this post ended up with me rambling more than giving actual advice but may give a little perspective into the mind of an achievement hunter. But for a TL;DR, competition, goals, and having no shame are pretty key to success I'd say.

Which speaking of no shame, I saw the Monster High game was $10 on storeparser. I'd be lying if I wasn't at least a little intrigued. In part for the easy 1k, in part because I'm curious on the character creation in that game (always been a sucker for that stuff).

You guys are doing pretty good clearing/finishing games. I only finished Costume Quest, Grubbins on Ice, and Costume Quest 2. I did play CQ2 twice to get all the achievements. Those three prob matched what I finished last year. I don't know what I want to play next.

I dont see how you and others finish RE7 so fast, I keep getting turned around in the house. I just got my crow key lol. fuck those flys
Finished my first playthrough on Normal yesterday (~9 hours) without a guide, finished my second playthrough today on Easy (~4 hrs, 20 minutes) using a collectibles video to knock out a few more achievements. Not sure I have another playthrough in me anytime soon, nor do I plan to go for those last four achievements (two Madhouse ones, item box 3 times or less, & complete in 4 hours).

Wasn't that scared after the first third. Alien Isolation was much worst. Determine to beat any game ASAP that I spent full price on, a list hailed by the CAG Jedi that are crazy enough to spend full MSRP.

Yeah, I spend a lot of time in TItanfall 2. Now at G9.42, I think.

Might as well give RS Seige a try.
Have fun getting yelled at constantly. Bought it a week ago and that's been my entire experience so far. Game's solid but man people have a stick up their butt and expect you to perform like a veteran in a very mechanically complex game with intricate maps right away.

This will most likely be a unpopular opinion but I am not feeling Gears 4 yet.  Only just started the Campaign.  Honestly I forgot how slow the game can be for someone like me that sucks at the game.

It will have fun or funny moments. Just finish it out on a low difficulty to see where it goes. Only will take like 4 hours. It won't be a total waste of time.

To be fair, Gears 4 has the weakest single player campaign in the series. The new characters are just so damn angsty (it seems like everyone gets a moment to yell at Marcus) and there's really nothing fulfilling about the story itself as it ends on a big "wait, that's it?!" moment.

Horde mode though is fantastic if you can wrangle together a good group of friends and start working your way up in class.

On the other hand I have been playing Forza Horizon 3 and it is a blast.  I am not a driving game fan either but FH3 is just a pleasure to play.

I just got an email a short while ago with my code - must've been in the last hour or two. The subject line of the message is "[gamertag], download the Closed Beta now!"

Yeah, I guess a lot of my achievement hunting mentality is stuck back in the 360 era, where filler games were the bread and butter of Gamerscore. Goals definitely help though. I was at like 85,000 and decided I wanted to hit 100,000, along with becoming the top on my friends list. I was going up at a slow rate since I was pretty much only playing stuff I already owned, took about a year. And that was 8 years or so into my main account here.

Since then I've laid off, just getting them as they come, and doing a lot of anti-gamerscore stuff like playing a lot of multiplayer, or having only played Skyrim Remastered with mods so achievements were disabled. I'm currently on track to hit 15,000 for the year at best. I think I'm third or fourth on my friends list now too.

The biggest change from like 5 years ago is GWG, they really help pad out your opportunity to build your score up. I think if I really got motivated I have enough stuff backlogged to come close to 400,000 now.

Gears of War used to be my favorite game series, and I pre-ordered Gears 4 Ultimate at full price, but I got bored of it a couple of weeks after it came out. I got spoiled by the unlockables in Gears 3, the microtransactions make leveling up completely worthless. I got bored of the maps pretty quickly, too. I see people that have been playing it since launch and I envy them, I wish it would have kept my interest that long. I also have never been a fan of the Horde mode in the series though, so maybe that's the problem.

The new maps every month help, and the couple events and occasionally fairly priced new skin gear packs do to. I mostly like it because it's so different from Overwatch and Halo, and I've always been a big Horde fan.

The progression is fucked though. I've just started saving all my credits for when there are limited time gear packs I want, now that I've got all the characters I really wanted. And I play quite a bit of Horde and still haven't hit Rank 10 on the only class I use for it. Some minor rewards for doing stuff like Gears 3 did unlockable skins would go a long way, as is it's pretty much just one junk emblem per Re-up.

THIS. So this. But after it all, I still can't enough of the vs multiplayer. I have no idea how Eld got that Seriously chievo.

I myself, loved the Gears 4 campaign. GoW2 still takes the cake though. The side story of Dom trying to find his wife and the conclusion cuts deep on a very personal level for me

I don't mind the Gears 4 multiplayer, but I absolutely have to play co-op versus only. I used to be good at this series, but I don't know what happened. I'd be lucky to get a single kill against human players. Maybe that's why the game got old so quickly; I have to play against bots and they become very predictable. But I can't play a single match against humans without raging. I'm just kinda stuck I guess. It was a fun two-week romp, and I enjoyed the campaign, and I'm sure I'll get Gears 5 for the campaign and to see Gridlock remastered for the 29th time.

I did play a match during their Christmas event and remember being entertained. I can't remember what it was. Antlers on locusts or something? And they were really pushing the Christmas chests. I opened one and got something like "Congrats! You got a Peppermint Joe-John character skin! Be the envy of all your friends!" like I caught a rare Pokemon and decided I was just done with it.

Monster High is decent for what it is. Predominately non-stop fetch quests and having to buy all the fashions in the game. Character creation is okay, and about halfway through the game you gain the ability to change your monster type at any time.

There's also monster puns.....lots and LOTS of puns. So many puns!!!

I love the idea of backlog groups but with work/family it's nigh impossible to play with any regularity. My wife will very rarely let me play for more than 10 minutes without asking me to do something or stand around and talk to her while she's doing something. Also, I have alot of AAA titles in my backlog but there's no way I can play them around my kids - seems like most games nowadays aren't kid-viewer friendly because of the language. I'd kill for a censor option in games that bleeps cursing and/or *'s subtitles. Something that could be turned off when I'm on my own.

Violence I'm not too worried about because I make sure my kids know the difference between media and real-life. Heck, my parents bought and watched us play the original MK on Genesis and I've yet to rip a person's spine out IRL.
Same situation here ... that's why over the past few years I've gravitated away from AAA titles and more toward platformers and other casual fair such as Kalimba, Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime etc. etc. etc. These types of games fit more in line with family life and playing with everyone around.

For those without kids and a family, you'll see. One day you'll wake up and have a mortgage, a family (with seemingly endless needs) and more responsibilities than you can fit in a 24-hour day. There will be very little if any time for gaming. And you'll wonder how it all happened.

As the first wave of NES/SNES/Genesis gamers reach (gasp!) middle-age, the market for pick up and play, bite sized games has grown significantly.

Was excited when I saw Madden 17 ($20) and NHL Legacy for 360 ($15) on sale/drop because I've been wanting a FIFA game.... and then saw FIFA 17 is still $30.  Welcome to why I guess I'l never own a FIFA game, even though Id like to.  Their price points always stay way, way too high.
