XBLA - Pac-Man Championship Edition - 800pts

Yea just beat challenge mode 1, great to have all the power pellets at the beginning and then none throughout lol, what a challenge. All achievements unlocked, wooo. Was 802 and It made me feal good except for when I'm 902 now. Yea I'm not going to play religously just to stay on the leaderboards.

I just lost an hour playing this game... i don't know where it went.

If someone finds it, can you send it back to me?

I cracked the top 50 leaderboards, 47 to be precise on the Extra Mode 2 map. That was about two hours ago. I've already dropped a few spots. :(

This game is as good as when Pac-Man first hit the scene. Very impressed.

I was reading this, thinking you guys were so full of crap. It's still freaking Pac Man... DL'd the demo, played once... Bought game, played a couple of hours straight... Got on to play Halo 3 beta last night, got laughed at by friends sending me invites while I play pac man... Tried to explain myself, and I just really can't.

This is the perfect example of why the free demos for every arcade title are invaluable. I'd have never paid 800 points blind for this, but it's worth every freaking one of them. Fun stuff.

It seems so stupid to me that people complain about this being $10 while the emulated Pac-man games are only $5. The pricing structure on XBLA is that classic games are $5 and brand new games are $10. This Pac-Man game is a completely new game and completely worthy of the $10 price. In my opinion this is the only $10 game on XBLA that is worth $10. What $10 game on XBLA is a better value than Pac-Man CE?

It's so funny to me how stupid the internet group think is. Street Fighter II was a classic game that broke away from the XBLA pricing rules by being $10, yet very few people complained about that game's price. Now a revolutionary Pac-Man game comes along that is built from the ground up for Xbox 360 and is incredibly addictive with tremendous longevity and replay value, it's got more modes and variety than the classic Pac-Man games and yet people complain about the price.

And before someone brings them up, Geometry Wars and UNO were $5 because they were first party games. New 3rd party games on XBLA are always $10 or more.

You know I was a huge Halo 1 multiplayer fan, but ever since they removed the health packs I don't think Halo multiplayer has been as fun or strategic as it once was. Halo 3 Beta is just more of the same and really did nothing for me. Pac-Man C.E. on the otherhand is the only game to really get me excited this year.

It's so funny to me how stupid the internet group think is. TMNT was a classic game that broke away from the XBLA pricing rules by being $10, yet very few people complained about that game's price. Ironically TMNT and most arcade beatem ups are terrible games with very little longevity (when you don't need to pay 25 cents a life there's very little challenge in these 15 minute games). Now a revolutionary Pac-Man game comes along that is built from the ground up for Xbox 360 and is incredibly addictive with tremendous longevity and replay value, it's got more modes and variety than the classic Pac-Man games and yet people complain about the price.

I understand that MS gets their cut from each sale, but people complain about the price because there is no color manual, DVD case, or DVD, no battery to factor into the cost of producing an Arcade download.

UMK3 and Street Fighter II are the only 2 XBLA games I know of that broke away from the pricing structure of classic coin-op games on XBLA. If anything should be chastised for their pricing it is those two games. Pac-Man CE represents the best of what XBLA has to offer. ie. Brand new arcade games built specifically for the Xbox 360 hardware. (Geometry Wars RE, Mutant Storm, Pac-Man CE)

So complain about $10 XBLA games in general. Or demand some kind of an all you can eat subscription model like Gametap. Or ask Microsoft to start offering XBLA bundle packs (ie. 4 Namco games for $16). People shouldn't be criticizing the one $10 XBLA game that is probably worth $10. Most people who complain about the price are complaining about Pac-Man CE for only superficial reasons. People who haven't tried it say "It's just Pac-Man" while people who don't understand the XBLA pricing structure say "Ms. Pac-Man and Pac-Man are only $5."

And why people even bring up Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man when talking about this game is beyond me. Ms. Pac-Man was essentially a Pac-Man mod so I can see people being upset about having to purchase both classic games for $5, but Pac-Man CE is a completely new game. In my opinion there is little correlation between liking this new version of Pac-Man and liking the original Pac-Man. That is how different the two games are. I think a lot of the problems come from the naming of this game. I think they should have called this something like "Pac-Man 2" or something to send the message that this is something totally new. "Championship Edition" makes it sound like this is just a slight modification of the original Pac-Man for competitive gaming. The reality is that this is the most significant Pac-Man update since Ms. Pac-Man in 1981 and this is a much more significant update than Ms. Pac-Man in terms of the game's overall design.

For what it's worth I don't think any of the games should be more than $5.

I have a much bigger problem paying $5 for an emulated ROM than I do paying $10 for a brand new game built for the Xbox 360.

SOTN is easily a better value.

Not that Pac-Man CE is bad.

I beat my high schore in Challange Mode 1, although I still can't reach the end of the 10 minutes yet. Now I'm aiming for that achievment, and the 400k point achievment as well. THe trouble with this game has always been that your instincts seem to tell you to plan your route based on the assumption that the ghosts are always going to follow you and take the fastest route possible to catch you, but this ends up being almost never true. The red ghost seems to be the only one who will follow you never relent, while the rest seem to move in seemingly random patterns, so most of your deaths end up being now from getting caught by a ghost, but by running into one yourself because you assumed he was going to do one thing, and instead he did something completely different.

Actually the ghosts have their own personalities. Always have. Here is a breakdown of how they chase you:

Blinky (red) - Chases. Will usually take the shortest route to you, and tends to follow.
Pinky (pink) - Ambushes. Tends to take a more roundabout way to pac-man. Deadly.
Inky (blue) - Freak. This dude acts strangely. He moves about the board fairly randomly, but sometimes chases when he gets in close.
Clyde (orange) - Idiot. Moves randomly. Not much of a threat.

I kept playing the 3-minute demo over and over, thinking that I had finally found another XBLA game worth owning, but when I finally hunkered down and bought the full game I lost interest. It's still a great take on Pac-Man, and a worthy anniversary game, but I wish I had my 800 points back.

Finally beat Challenge 1. All thats left is to get the 400,000pts. Anyone have any suggestions on what's the best challenge to do this in? I beat Challenge 1 with 300,XXXpts.

I think I got that in one of the 10 minute Extra modes. I'm on your friends list, so check the friend leader boards on each. I did it the first time I completed whatever mode that was.

So what are people getting for the championship mode scores? I'm somewhere around 180k, and I can't for the life of me seem to get higher in that 5 minutes. How the fuck did the leader hit 600k?????????
For what it's worth I don't think any of the games should be more than $5.
I think of it this way - How many games could you buy last generation for $10 or less at launch? This is a totally different market, and I think the 5 and 10 price structure is OK. I've heard Wombat and Cheapy talk about a game being worth $6 or $7, but not $10. Really??? You can really quantitate fun that precisely to narrow something down to within $3 of it's "real" value?

I played Pac Man C.E. for at least 3 hours this weekend. For $7.50 (I've never paid for than $15 for a 1600 card) that's twice the length of most theater run movies, at about the same cost. I pay that much for lunch if I go out to eat.

It's all about what kind of games you enjoy though. If you don't like arcade style high-score contest type gameplay, this will never be worth $10 to you. For me, Forza 2 will never be worth $10 - forget $60, cause I just don't like racing sims. But for what it's trying to be, Pac Man CE is a phenomenal game.

400,000 is going to be tough. I'm around 275,000 right now which isn't even close. I don't feel like I've played a good game yet but the controls are definitely holding me back a bit - you just can't reverse directions on a dime - also, I really feel like the ghosts are more aggressive than in the original pac-man. They seem to be able to close in on me/anticipate my moves much easier than I'm used to. They also do not exhibit their original traits (which makes their movements harder to predict).

I posted an excellent tip for this earlier in the thread where you can basically start one map(with a little practice) with about 120k before the "bulk" of the game starts.

I know, thats how I got my 300K but I can't get further than that.

I'm not noticing this at all in this version. It is definitely true for the arcade original (although I always thought Clyde was actually afraid of Pac-man which is why he always seemed to be moving away and rarely chases him. In CE they all seem to act like a cross between Blinky and Pinky...

I haven't paid super close attention, but I have noticed Blinky definitely still chases relentlessly and clyde goes about his business. I could be right near him and he just takes off in the opposite direction. The other two I'm uncertain still, but thinking back, I can remember numerous occasions where I get cornered and Pinky is the one getting me from behind. I have no clue about Inky.

- After that first 120k focus on clearing the map, don't chase down ghosts after eating a power pellet use use them for time to clear the map and get your fruit.

- Don't waste time on parts of the map without dots. Every second counts.

- Once you get the key on one half the map, don't eat the power pellets, instead finish the other side of the map and continue to do so until you get the key for that side as well.

- At this point you should have 6-8 more power pellets on the map at once.

- Kill yourself somwhere near the middle of the board. This will reset the ghosts in the box and you have free reign to chain together those 6-8 pellets like you did at the beginning of the map. This time for another 80k or so(just a guess on the score).

- repeat this method when you have a few power pellets on a side, don't use them until you can get the other half of the board to match so you have twice as many power pellets to chain together.

Extra Game type 2 is where I got my 400k.

I'm #363 on overall leaderboards for Championship mode right now (score is about 240k). I'm absolutely capped there. At this point, even if I play better (i.e. don't die) I don't see how I could get more than a handful more points in this mode. I'd really like to know how those over 300k pull it off.
My buddy (badgersgotballs) is ranked #18 in Challenge 1. Screw that! I'll never catch up to that.
Good grief. You and I can sit low on the totem pole together, ZForce. ;)

i tried the demo last night and really don't get what everyone likes about this. To me it just seems like a less un-enjoyable version of the original. Althought i never really like the original so maybe this type of game is just not for me

My high is 250k and I think that put me about #115 (at the time) on the leaderboard. So it definitely looks like it thins out around that point if you are only 10k below me and 250 spots down on the totem pole.

I cannot even touch my high score. I've played it a dozen times more and I can barely get 200k let alone 250k again. I don't know what I did that round but it must have been close to a perfect run(for me).

I was ranked 47 in Extra Mode 2 but have since dropped to 79 the last time I checked. Probably lower now.

I blew past 400,000 last night once I tried Extra 1 - 452,xxx. I was ranked 193 when I went to bed and I know I could do WAY better - I wasn't even really trying for the 400K - I was just trying to survive to get the achievement. All I have left to get is the crown achievement.

That's where this game hooks you completely. You can get a good score, and just feel like you're so close to doing much better and getting a better ranking. This is the first title since Geometry Wars to give me that constant tease and keep my playing over and over.

I was up till 2:30am playing it. I downloaded it, thought I'll play a game or two... 4 hours later I decided I needed to go to bed.

This is the first game where the leaderboards are actually making me want to do better. Currently #40 in Championship mode, still working on moving up further...

Well worth my $10.

I'm sitting at #191 with 270k.

Yup, it's right around 310k. Moved up to 7th last night in Extra Mode 3 with around 670k. Can't get enough of it yet.

I wonder if Namco has put any thought into releasing this to arcades.

Ever since I read that thread I've bought all my games at half price. This is probably a good buy at $10, but a steal at $5.
