XBLA - Rez HD - 800pts

Dear MS,

I'm sorry I bitched at you about XBLA for the past couple months (since Puzzle Quest), I forgive you for at least a little while. Ikaruga would help my feelings mend more quickly.

Love,
Halo05
Kinda miffed that I bought the PS2 version a couple years ago for $40, and never got around to playing it! Oh well, at least it was part of a B2G1 deal.
Shit, that's nothing. I'm waiting for the painful moment where Ikaruga gets put up for 800 MSP (speculative) after I dropped damn near $60 for a used Gamecube copy.

Fantastic game.

Area 5 is an artistic masterpiece. The boss is pretty tough too; he wouldn't have killed me if I had known there were multiple iterations of him (I wasted 3 overdrives on the first one since I thought that was all there was to it...).
Love it!
Beat the first 4 levels...getting to the 5th might be difficult. :/
How do you get to the 5th? I beat the first 4, but nothing unlocked...
How do you get to the 5th? I beat the first 4, but nothing unlocked...
You need 100% analyzation on the first 4 levels to unlock it.

Thanks Cheapy. I thought I nailed the analyzation, if nothing else... I'm struggling with the scoring mode too. I keep coming in around 140k on the first level. The artwork in this game is very cool. It seems kind of simple and short, but I'm pretty hooked.

It also spurred me to go back and play Lumines again.

Hmm, after all the hype about this game I have been hearing since it came out on PS2, I was pretty disappointed.

As far as psychedelic shooters go I'd much rather play Space Giraffe. No buy for me.

Tips for score attack in general:
*Use MAX combos, they provide more points.
*Stall on the boss, they have excess pieces that you can shoot for points.
*Don't worry about shooting everything down, I shot everything down in Area one, and without stalling the boss, and I just barely made it over 150k. Stalling the boss is the key to a higher score.
*Although you shouldn't concentrate on shooting everything down, DO aim for over 95% cleared because it gives you a harder boss(There are 3 forms, something, Giga, Tera. You see it in [] after the bosses name, such as EARTH[Tera]). The Tera boss gives 20,000 points instead of 10,000 points.

I also am a bit disappointed after playing the demo. I still may pick it up if I am in the right mood though.

I've loved this game since the PS2, and it's so great to have it on the 360. My favorite sound/moment is that operatic voice and following beats just before the first "angel" in Level 5. Second favorite is the explosion sound as Earth finishes spinning its missile arms... this:

This game is quite a trip, but I'm getting my ass kicked. I can't even beat the second level boss ... I got pretty close after about four tries but I can't seem to not get hit during the level getting up to the boss.

Any tips?

I'm having a blast all over again. I had the UK Dreamcast version and I'm so glad that I can play it again so easy. My DC version needed a boot disk and it didn't always work 100% of the time.

My favorite part of the game is on level 5 when you fight the mini boss that is shaped like cylinder and has missiles pumping out of both ends of him. That part of Rez is freaking Epic.

I'm in the same boat. Actually, I've only played the level twice, but I barely last 15 seconds against the boss. The first time, I barely started, and it was over. I think I lasted 10 seconds the second time.

Seriously? Just prioritize the bosses attacks on you, and then go after the boss himself.
And don't forget about your overdrive.

I'm not looking forward to getting 95% of the enemies on Area 5. =/

Rez really is quite the experience. Stage 5 was so enchanting, and even though I didn't get to play Rez "FOR REAL" on dreamcast, The game's feel is so fitting to the system. Amazing originality, a fresh approach to an old idea... it's like the Jetset Radio of Shooters, heh.

REMEMBER, people having problems with score attack, YOU CAN WATCH OTHER'S REPLAYS! I love this feature in Rez and Omega 5, it really is wonderful to see how the best players go at score-centric games like this.

Man, this makes me want more shooters on XBLA... Ikaruga and Triggerheart Excelica can't come fast enough... (And maybe that Raiden collection...)
i dont know what you guys see in this game....does it get better later on?
Same here. From the demo I don't really get the appeal. What am I missing? :whistle2:?

The Demo really isn't as exciting as the full game (duh), but you get the gist of it. Rez, gameplay wise, is strongly about trying to perfect your run through the stages, getting all the items, killing every enemy, and doing everything the stage offers you.

Beyond Gameplay, it's about a combination of the pace and flow of the images and music. The game attempts to bring all methods of interation with it (through sound, visuals, rythm, etc) into one coherent experience, and general concensus is that it accomplishes this better than just about anything out there.

For me, Stage 5 and the bonus features are just as great as, say, Portal. Rez is one of the rare Xbox Live games that was made as a full console release that's now being offered for an exceedingly low price. It encourages and rewards multiple play throughs, too. (More Xbox Live Arcade games need to reward you like this.)

If you open your mind to it, you should be able to appreciate it.
Woah, level 5 is nuts.

I really want Ikaruga. :bomb:
Me too, I almost tried the Gamecube version last night. But I stayed my hand so I can save my first Ikaruga experience for the the XBox Live version.

I've gotten 92.07%. Once I learned I can lock on with 8 shots at once, my hit rate started going up.

To those having troubles in stage 2 boss:
*Know that you can lock on to multiple enemies at once, up to 8. Use this on the first part of the fight where he shoots the missiles.
*Know that you can use rapid fire by tapping the button. I find this to be effective(and the only way I can survive) when he has those branches out.
*If the boss is really too hard for you, know that the boss difficulty is dependent on how many enemies you kill in the level. Loosen up, and the boss will be easier.

I wish I knew you could lock on. I finally learned this after wondering why I couldn't get many points in score attack. (or whatever that mode is called) Game is much easier now... Also, it took me forever on the final boss not knowing you could lock on!!!!

The designer that worked on the Tutorial mode is probably frowning into his beer right now and feeling underappreciated.

Quoted for the truth.

Just curious, by loosening up, do you mean killing more or less enemies in the level?

I knew most of the stuff, I think my problem was that I wasn't doing that good in the level, so I didn't have much by the time I got to the final boss. I got to him yesterday, and actually cruised on him (wondering why I was having such a problem before).

I have played through the tutorial mode, so I knew about locking on up to 8 (or is it 9 when it says max) enemies.

Now, onto level 3 (haven't tried it yet).

I really don't want to be a prick, but where's the difficulty? I am not a twitch gamer or a shmup fan, but I was able to beat every level for this game on the first try. Is it really just that people didn't watch the tutorial to see that you can lock on to 8 things at once?

i beat the game just fine without multiple locks... it just took longer

It's not really a hard game at all. And how did people not know you could do multiple locks, that's like the whole point of the game.

agreed... it's kinda sad actually.
The last boss is killin' me :(
I got up to the 4th form. How many forms are there? any tips..strategies?
There are 5 forms, and the last form has 5 phases. :D

It took me three tries to beat that boss for the first time. Just keep shooting. Go defensive and take your time. Learn to use your lock ons to take out groups more easily (helps when you get to score attack and the beyond modes). Use your overdrives fairly liberally; the first four phases all drop 3 power ups, so you can pick up some more as you go. You can also get some more power ups in the last phase by blasting the larger diamond-shaped ships that start to pop up.

I actually found the game easier by rapid firing instead of multiple locking, although I'm not sure thats the spirit in which the game is intended to be played. It did give the songs a kind of samba beat though.

I find that when you multiple lock you can get hit by things before you've finished firing.

Aye, the first time I went through the game, I used alot of rapid shooting. I did learn by looking through replay videos, though, that locking on (especially to max) nets more score in score attack.

Kinda makes it's own difficulty that way: Playing in a more risky style nets more score.

Tip for "safe" lock-ons: Lock onto what's obviously going to hit you first, then start searching for other things to lock onto. Only release the lock-on when the "primary" lock is right about to hit you. This way, you can stay defended, and still optimize lock-ons.

Hey, I was not in my normal, sober state of mind when I first played Rez, so I didn't check the tutorial. I'M SORRY.
