Xbox 360 Hardware/Accessories Questions Thread
Another perhaps stupid question: You did restart your computer after installing WMC, right?

You might want to check to make sure the Windows Firewall isn't on as well. Although, I would think that it would automatically open up the ports for WMC, but you never know.
Yes, I did reboot.

I don't have Windows Firewall running. I let Norton act as my firewall.

I had a problem with the wmc streaming because of the nvidia firewall built into my mother board. There is a conflict with something in the firmware/software for it. I did a reinstall of windows and when it asked if I wanted to install it I choose no and it works fine now. I dunno if it matters but i have the Fatal1ty SLI mobo.

Hmm... I wonder if maybe my router is the cause of the trouble somehow. I have a Belkin 4-port wired router. Not sure of the model number or anything. Maybe the Belkin site has something...

EDIT: Can't remember which router I have. Dang it...

Well the wmc setup opens the ports on your internet connection automatically. I would look into your motherboard info, I didn't think it would have anything to do with it til I went to the abit forums and found others were having the same troubles.

Does anyone know anything about the "DMZ" feature on a router. Supposedly, it strips the protection off of one of your computers/devices, but still leaves it connected to the router.

I'm wondering if I should put my 360 in the "DMZ" and see if it works. After all, does the 360 really need protection?
Why don't you try connecting your 360 directly to your PC?
I wouldn't be able to use the internet on my PC, then.

I checked my PC to see if it had an extra ethernet port (often used for computer-to-computer connections), but it didn't. So, I'm still scratching my head and wondering how I can get this to work.

EDIT:

A question for you all: Is there any way to hook up my PC to the 360 through another type of connection? For example, USB?

Tried the DMZ feature to put my 360 in the DMZ (while leaving my PC protected). Didn't work. So, my 360 and PC are both protected again.

So, I still have my last question up in the air: Can I connect my PC to my 360 with something else, like USB?
I meant just to see if it is indeed your router that is casuing the problem.
OK. Pretty good idea, then. I'll give it a try tomorrow. Thanks, Z.

I thought MS made it a rule that no third parties can manufacture 360 controllers until a year after launch, yet I saw some third party controllers at BB the other day...

Well, those crappy 3rd party controllers appear to be licensed by MS. Either way, they are pricey for 3rd party junk.

Still haven't had a chance to hook the 360 up to the PC directly, yet. However, I have a question:

Is it possible to transfer a bunch of mp3 files from my PC to my 360, so that I won't have to stream them? Hopefully you all understand what I'm trying to say. Instead of making some kind of link on the 360 that tells it to stream a file from the PC, could I actually copy the 5 MB or so mp3 files to the 360 and then play them directly on the 360?

Only with a CD (burned or original).

So, just like the original Xbox, then?

Well, there's plenty of HDD space for music, so I'll just upload to the HDD the old-fashioned way, then.

Thanks, Z.

not really a hardware or accessory question, but i didn't want to start a new thread..

so i have a question about how the 360 works with 2 accounts on 1 xbox. me and my gf play on 2 accounts on 1 xbox, so will the things i purchase from the marketplace be available to both accounts? or will i only be able to play the game from the account i used to buy it?

also, which games for the 360 allow 2 different people(preferably with 2 different gamertags) to play on the same xbox (does COD2 or PDZ allow split screen?)
also, which games for the 360 allow 2 different people(preferably with 2 different gamertags) to play on the same xbox (does COD2 or PDZ allow split screen?)
Up to 4 can play PDZ.

Okay, I haven't had much time to play with my 360, but a couple questions have come up..

1) I've read a lot of places that I can change my gamertag for a fee. How? Can't seem to find the option anywhere. If it is in the marketplace, what option is it under?

2) The first post mentions a battery indicator for the play and charge kit... how do you pull it up?

Thanks everyone

Wow, over 24 hours and no answer?

Well, I found the answer to number 2, it's on the upper left hand side of the dashboard. Guess I confused it for another blade.

Still no idea how to actually change my gamertag. Sure, it's a ripoff, I just want to know where the option is...
and i'd like to know about 2 accounts on 1 box. seems everyone with a 360 is busy playing it.
I've got my account and my roomate has one too. You can switch between them.. have different themes. Each is it's own Live account. And your gamercard reflects the games you play to the account you are logged in with. So, if you play Kameo, it will show the saved games for Account #1, but if you log into Account #2, it will not show the games for #1.

Edit: Oops, reading back a few posts, that might not be what you were asking. :(

If I buy a Charge 'n' Play kit, does that mean I'll be able to play with my wireless Xbox 360 controller (obviously it will need to be connected) on my computer or will I need a regular wired 360 controller for that?

You need a regular wired controller. The charge kit is just for power flow, there's no input connection.

Using the Play and Charge Kit, does the system have to be powered up to charge or is some power flow fed to the USBs so I can charge the controllers in between games?

I'd assume so, since the power supply is always on.

As for the gamertag questions. Hit the :360: button, open your gamertag, then its under "edit profile"

As for my own question, has anyone been able to use a profile name thats different from their gamertag, or is that not possible?

The system has to be on while you plug in the controller but you can turn it off and it will continue to charge.

Excellent...thanks.

BTW, anyone been able to get some comparisons between the chargeable battery pack and the rechargeable AAs? I've got plenty of the latter, was wondering whether it's worth it to pick up a battery pack and the Play and Charge.

Go to your profile (where you see your "rep" and gamerscore, then edit gamer profile, then gamertag

It'll cost you $10 to change it. And you can actually see if the new name you want is taken already before you decide.

Can the Play and Charge Kits cord be put into a controller and make it run without the battery pack in? I wonder because if so this would allow a battery to be in one controller and the other to be wired without buying something else or whenever batteries get low and I wouldn't have to rush to get a battery or something.

Yes

Every time I select the 360 to run in 720 or 1080 it puts it in Widescreen format and I cant change it (its grayed out). Is this normal. My HDTV is not a widescreen so this sucks.

HELP!
tnx

720p, 1080i/p are widescreen formats, so you are SOL if you expect to play 4:3 in HD. I suppose, depending on your TV that you could stretch it, but that would kind of defeat the purpose.

I think I have the same problem jack had/has. I tried directly connecting it to my laptop, and it still says that it cant be found and such. Anyone got any suggestions?

Saucy jack, did you ever get yours working?

For anyone who's bought the 12 month Live subscription that comes with the $20 game rebate, does it require for the game's UPC to be cut out, or just a photocopy of the UPC/and or game receipt?

I just got mine yesterday, haven't touched it yet, but the best buy guy was heavily pushing the stand to hold the system up. Does it need a stand, or can it stand up without a problem on its own?

Does anyone have the older backward compatibility update files they could send me? My Xbox crapped when it was downloading the last update and now I have no backwards compatibility. I got the recent one, put it on disc and try but that didn't help either. I guess it thinks its recent, but not enough to work. I'm wondering if I could put an older update on and maybe then it'll work.

If not, does anyone else have any suggestions for fixing this or do I need to wait until the next update and hope that works?

I got my streaming thing working. I just had my xbox on, restarted my PC, then disabled zone alarm. Then i went and added my xbox's ip address as a trusted zone

after reading the question by ultimate matt x (top of page), i have a question.

i have two wireless controllers and 1 charger kit. i was wondering the best way to handle this? should i just wire one with the charger and have the other on battery? should i buy two charger kits? or should i buy a rechargable battery pack (its the battery pack from the charge kit minus the charger)

i was just wondering the best cheap option. if the battery life of these things are relatively good then i could probably work from 1 charger kit. anyways thanks in advance for the help.

Yeah, just buy one "play and charge kit" and one extra battery pack. Then just swap the cord between the two when one needs charging. I think it charges something like 4x quicker than the controller depletes the battery. Take that extra $8 you will save and buy chocolate milk and twinkies. Mmmmmm...

^ just the answer i was looking for.

so there would be little or zero value in buying two chargers, right?

and i'll be taking that extra money and putting it towards the g/f a live kit. we've always only had 1 mic between us, and i'm loving the fact that the 360 mics are half the price.

If you wanna get two battery packs and a play and charge kit (or a play and charge kit and battery pack w/ most any other accessory), DVDEmpire.com has free shipping. You might not have to pay tax as well, so you can save some money that way since they have the Play and Charge Kit for $15.

Edit: never mind...you already have a charger kit.

Anyone know if theres any way of getting just the cord in the play and charge kit without having to pay the extra for the battery in the kit?

Reason im asking is i was trying to get the stupid vacum sealed package open and ended up cutting the wire with my scisors.
