XBOX 360 Red Ring of Death FAQ: Soon to be known as the Red Dot of Death! :P

Yea, I agree, do the email label thing. the box will take a week and a half.
2 other points:
Has MS opened up a new repair hub? My first RRoD was sent to McAllen, TX now mine has almost made it to Mesquite, TX, it's destination. Also, it looks like ups tried to deliver at 7:09am, then had to try again at 9:40am. Guess they don't open until later? Lazy asses.

I must have just been lucky. Did a request for a box, via the xbox.com, on a Friday and got the coffin the following Monday. Sent my 360 in 2 weeks from yesterday and they tried to delivery it today and no one was home. Stupid UPS and not realizing some people work during the 8 AM - 7 PM delivery frame. If only they have tried at 4 instead of before, I'd be playing CoD 4 or something right now.

Alas I have now been victimized by the rings as well...
I've been able to get rid of the rings but it's fruitless because within 5 minutes the system freezes and I'm back to the rings again.
One of my friends has had a horrible time with Microsoft sending the same 360 in three times and never getting it fixed.
Since I can get rid of the rings on my own, I don't dare send it in because my luck by the time it gets to them, the rings will be gone and they'll either not fix it or charge me too much.
So I decided screw it, I went online and bought a new core system GTA4 bundle (basically getting GTA for 10 bucks)
I figure my hard drive should still be ok so I'll just toss it on there with my saved stuff intact as opposed to getting one with a new hard drive.
I pray this works, I should be getting it later this week or early next week.
If by chance it doesn't work, I'll just return it and purchase either the Halo edition or the Elite version....

I'm back in the thread with one mission to go in GTA IV!! Woke up Sunday morning to finish the game only to find a RROD staring at me. The console was made July 07. It lasted less than a year. Metal Gear 4 should keep me busy though......

Well I think my GPU starting to fry :(

Earlier tonight I booted up to dashboard and saw these white specs flickering all over the screen :( Panicked, shut down waited a few minutes and rebooted preying a RRoD wouldn't hit and it was fine....however I am getting slow downs in games.... could it be because I jumped from 720p to 1080i???

My box arrives tomorrow. Quick enough to me.
And yes, thats the faceplate on it now. It has all of that on it and more. I wrote "please send money im poor" on the USB flap, and "please gief gaems" on the memorycard flaps.
Oh, and I gave the sumo an evil goatee, a pirate hat and an eyepatch.

What, no props? ;)

It's still funny as hell that you're doing it.

Props to Plume for the idea. Also plume, draw powerpuff girls doing 2girls1cup on your 360 if you do send it in. It will be EPIC!

So I sent my unit in on Saturday.. they received it on Monday.. and sent a new one out today. It's due to arrive on Friday. I'm assuming that I'm just getting a repaired one. I'm okay with it, as long as it works.

Fingers crossed that it's an HDMI one.

One week turn around is insane though. I thought last time was great when it was a two week turn around.

Ugh, I hate Microsoft right now. I sent my 360 in for repair last week and got it back about 3 days ago. I was excited to get it back so I could play NGII when it came out. I plugged it up, and it's not repaired at all.

Now when I'm on the dashboard, I get this humming/buzzing noise, and the farther left I go (say from System tab to Marketplace tab) the sound only gets louder. I thought no big problem it's only on the dashboard, but when I went to play GH3 it still made that noise.

When I sent it in it had a greenish tint to everything on the screen, and now I have it back and it's still doing it. The key on GH3 that's supposed to be red is gray.

So I email them explaining the situation and they treat me like I'm stupid. They tell me to check my TV settings, and I did that right after I plugged it in. After 3 emails back to them they tell me it's my TV (which it's not) and they tell me that it may need to be repaired. Then what the hell did I even bother sending it in the first time for!?

Obviously emails aren't working, so hopefully a phone call will be better. This is turning out to be such a headache. Most people seemed to have positive experiences with their customer service, so I thought I would too. Boy how I was wrong.

Boy that sucks farley. No RRoD? Just make it RRoD, that seems to be all they know how to fix.
Question for ITDFX and anyone else: My console arrived yesterday at 9:45pm, per UPS. On the xbox.com support page thingy as of 12:00pm today (6/5), it says waiting for console to arrive. Is this lag time common? Should I be worried and raise a fuss? I'm still a little nervous that my console was sent to Mesquite, Tx rather than McAllen, Tx.

Maybe I should just make it RRoD on purpose. It did RRoD once, then never really worked properly after that. I wouldn't be worried, mine went to Mesquite, TX as well.

I sent my console off(2nd time I've had one RRoD since I bought the original in Jan 07) and got it about a week ago. Different console of course, now this one seems to work fine except for the fact all the controllers keep randomly disconnecting. The gh3 guitar, and both controllers. Not to mention I get horrible static on the headset when its plugged in. Any ideas besides this console having a bad or dying IR port? I really dont want to send it back in again if I dont have to since i just got it back a week ago after it being gone for about 2 weeks.

You should check into that quick. Problems other than RROD fly off the warranty real fast after the first year.

i know the FAQ said that there is only a temporary fix/resurrection, but there are a bunch of people on craigslist (including play 'n' trade stores) that offer fix services (albeit play 'n' trade only guarantees 30 days). is it possible that there are other fixes?

You know I saw that in the Play n trade ad. They either *send them* away to MS for repairs OR they are an authorized repair center. There is one about 20 minutes from my house I could check it out sometime.

Wow, I never thought it'd happen to me but my 360 is giving me an RROD. Yesterday it froze during COD4 which I found suspicious since it never froze before, then it kept freezing at the boot and now displays the RROD. So much for me waiting for the Elite hoping that I would avoid the hardware problems, how my friend still has a perfectly working launch 360 unit is beyond me.

Hopefully since it's an Elite I'll be able to get one with the new heatsink doodads, or something.

I'd be more pissed if I wasn't getting a PS3 in a few days for MGS4. Sorry if I missed it, but what happens when you have your 360 repaired for the RROD do the 3 years to cover the RROD start over?

My 360 crapped out with a E74 error. I do have a extended warranty. So, I opted out of the coffin and they are emailing me a shipping label. That POS will be at the UPS store tomorrow. Two times in one year!!

I never sent me Xbox ( Tray would get stuck), but now the controllar is having problems connecting with the Xbox.
So ,I'm finally gonna send it. Plus, someone told me, that his tray got would sometimes stick, and that led to hardware failure.

Well just got my console back from MS and whaddaya know....they didnt fucking do shit to repair it. RRoD comes on after about 5-6 min after booting up. Here's another 3 wks w/o it and i still havent even been able to play GTA4. Can't describe it any other way than fucking ridiculous but what else should i have expected.

Damn, bob, mine is on it's way back, I hope that doesn't happen to me. What kind of wait time did it spend in the repair facility? Did MSFT do anything different on this return for you? Can they just send out a new console?

They most likely open it up and do the X-Clamp replacement, which is supposed to fix RROD.

I just gave a call to a new play n trade that opened up near my area a few weeks ago to ask this. Apparently they have NO ONE who can fix this problem at their store location. So what's the point of advertising this on their website if they can't fix it.

MS received my console on Tuesday. I checked today and apparently they made a shipping label today and the status is returned to customer.

Is such a short wait normal for non-red ring repairs? I sent my console in because the disc drive was messed up. I'm hoping they just didn't start it up, see no red ring problem, and send it back.

That was fast... 2 possibilities

1. they did just that, looked at the trouble ticket, turned it on, opened the drive, closed the drive and claimed could not find a problem with it and sent it right back.

2. they might have just given you another one no questions asked. Check the serial numbers to see if they match the original one you sent in.

I did this whole process in the middle of a move and I can't for the life of me find the piece of paper that I wrote down my original serial number on. I guess I'll just have to wait for it to be delivered. I don't think it was mailed out yet since UPS just says billing info received.

I will be really unhappy with MS if I get back my console with my problem not fixed.

I made a typo in my original post. They received my console last Tuesday, not Thursday of last week. So they had it for 2 days, tops.

I'm going to call up MS and ask.

I had to play chicken with the UPS truck today. Dude is leaving my place, I find a door sticker, track him down in the neighborhood, and Park my truck right in front of him, refusing to move until I get my xbox. Later tonight get to find out if it works.

Check my status with UPS.....here what it says........

MESQUITE,
TX, US 06/13/2008 7:30 P.M. THE RECEIVER REQUESTED A HOLD FOR A FUTURE DELIVERY DATE. UPS WILL ATTEMPT DELIVERY ON DATE REQUESTED 06/13/2008 9:54 A.M. OUT FOR DELIVERY

Are they closed? To busy?

That's EXACTLY what happened to me the first time I sent in my 360. When I called to investigate this, they said someone would call me back and later on I got a call from a very rude supervisor who told me that it WAS delievered the previous day and that it will show up that the shipping manager signed for it. Of course he lied as it was delievered the following day.

My guess is that the repair center is only accepting a certain amount per day and once they reach the limit they turn them away for a day or two.

I bought a new ps3 yesterday, and today my 360 decided to finally red ring. I think it's a launch system, but I bought it in 2007 from my dad's coworker. I played the hell out of it for almost a year, but the one day I leave it unplugged to figure out where to put it, it red rings the second I plug it back in. At least I did everything online and didn't have to talk to anybody.

Looks like my repaired launch unit has to go back for repairs again after a month. Getting all sorts of bizarre 2D corruption!

10 bucks say they don't fix it. And if they don't, they will have to deal with a very angry asshole. After all, I have the extended warranty til mid-2009! :)

Question.

I believe in October my three year warranty is up, including RROD (when I first signed up for the warranty they also gave me a extra year or something along those lines totalling three years) so if I happen to buy a HDMI core console this holiday season if mine breaks (It seems better to buy a new console then pay them for repairs?) are they adding 3 years repairs for RROD or was that just for previous consoles? I'm wondering if I'm better extending the warranty though them/paying for the repair or outright buying a new core at $250 (with my discount, so that makes it $100 more then the MS repair... which is warrantied for how longer? 90 days?)

Yes, my console has only froze once with a annoying sound (Far Cry, aka a buggy ass game) and never had a RROD. But I have a feeling come October three years is going to be too much for a 360 to handle of play without dying.
RROD for me. Now I feel like a real member of the Xbox community.
Your a member of the Xbox community when you buy the 360 and get on to xbl.

Your a member of the RRoD community when you get your first RRoD!

Welcome to our world. :bouncy:

Aw thanks. So anyways, I called the phone number, answered Max's questions asked for an agent, but then the phone service rang a lot and hung up on me. The second time I got someone's personal voice mail message. Is this unusual or common?

Now when you said you answered the questions, did you hit random numbers or what?

Yea that does sound strange.

I can no longer track my RROD repair status on Xbox.com, it gives me an error/not valid when I put in the reference number + zip code. Ugh

From what I read, their tracking support page goes down from time to time. Scary I know :(
Got the RRoD yesterday, on a three day old system with only 5 hours of play. It was the Arcade bundle.
That was fast. What killed it? if that's the case, your well within your 30 day return policy.

Speaking of which... those people who did get a Red Ring within the first 30 days, do stores give you any trouble with this saying you have to send it back to MS if it red rings or they just say within 30 days, just pick up another one off the shelf.

You should be able to pick up a new system off the shelf. I'll admit I bought a Premium and then took it back a few days later as I decided the Elite was the better deal, told them it was freezing up as Best Buy charges a restocking fee unless there is a problem with it. Yeah, I'm going to hell what of it?

Got my coffin yesterday, I'll be shipping my 360 out Monday. At least I have my new PS3 to entertain me, although it sucks that my Dad came to visit and that means no Rock Band or Guitar Hero.

When I called a third time I got a guy in india who wanted to help me but said their customer service software was in the middle of upgrading and to call back 5-6 hours later.

This is very unusual as I have heard about this from other people, but experienced this myself when I called. What "software" upgrade could this be? Are they reinstalling Vista?

A theory my friend and I have is that their is a 5-6 hour down time over their were they take breaks...hmm..

I don't know what happened, I play it maybe 4 hours(Bioshock), and then it just died. I bought it at Gamestop, they let me exchange it for another one no problems... I was surprised.

Oh good.. At least they didn't give you trouble in the return...it is gamestop after all.
