XBOX 360 Red Ring of Death FAQ: Soon to be known as the Red Dot of Death! :P

Ok, I know I said a few weeks ago that I would be doing an update, but I have been really busy lately but now that the school year is over, I am going to really give it an update this week.

I hope it works, I shipped mine Thursday and it's supposed to arrive sometime today. RRoD sucks. What's funny is Mckenny is about an hour away from where I live, in fact my boss lives in Mckenny

MPbrown, you should get a camcorder and go do some Bill O rilley style parking lot ambush interviews of the employees who work at the repair center. I really don't know what specifically to ask, I just want more of an idea of the goings on I guess.

I would but I heard there is no Mckenny repair center, the boxes are sent to the UPS hub in McKenny and then driven to the service center nearby. So who knows where our system ends up, I bet every MS employee is required to have xbox360 bookends.

Finally shipped out my 360 today. UPS said it'll get there at about Weds or Thurs, I'm starting to really miss my 360 despite it being a week since it died.

Ahh fuck...mine died today (only 5 days old!) while starting up BioShock

What is the Red Ring of Death?

The RRoD may strike at any time with little or no warning to the user whatsoever. The user may play several rounds of Halo 3 without problems, shut down the system to take a break and come back to it later only to discover THREE Flashing red lights and an unresponsive system.
[/quote]

Replace Halo 3 with BioShock and the same damn thing happened...several hours straight, come back from a 2 hour break and bam - doesn't work (and rrod)

I'm about to just try the nyko intercooler to see if it helps - god damn this came out of nowhere :bomb:

edit: tried the intercooler, didn't help...guess it's gunna go to texas soon

It would be advisable NOT to use that 3rd party cooler. It has been known to do damage in the back of the 360 and MS has clearly stated if they see the tail tale signs of this they WILL NOT FIX your unit.

Well, I`ve already tried it and it was of no use. Whats the number for microsoft csr?

You better check the back of your 360 carefully and check for scorch marks before you send it in.

I have an antec(i think) laptop cooler sitting under mine. It dropped my xbox's temp by 20 degrees. The only thing is that it's usb powered, so you either have to leave it on all the time, or get up and manually turn it off and on. I manually switch mine on, espically during the summer months.

Nothing visible from what I can tell...if anything, it's something minor in the the socket but again I can't notice a thing. I think I'll be fine sending it in and thanks for the number (and this thread ).

a laptop cooler? If it allows more game time then I'm all for it! Of course, I've got a suspicion at e3 this year, Microsoft is going to announce something like new 360 hardware immune to rrod (to rival the ps3 with mgs4 sales and hype). Maybe I'm just over my head though. :ziplip:

Ok, I've had my falcon freeze repeatedly over the past two weeks:

Once with Viking, creating a situation where I had to reboot my 360 numerous times. After about 20 second on turning on my console, it was 'freeze'.
Once with Ninja Gaiden 2, same thing.

And at least three with Transformers, although the recover was less severe- I just had to turn the power off then on again.

Is transformers particularly buggy or is my 360 dying? (Could be both, I guess)

yep, the laptop cooler works great. i got a laser thermometer to test the temp, it went from 105 to about 83-87. I was playing need for speed for about 3 hours a night then. on another note, apparantly my xbox shipped out today, so i guess i'm getting a referb.(

Well if my 360 doesn't red ring before july I am screwed as that's when their 3 month warranty expires for me after they sent me another one.

I really don't want to be out of the county for 2 weeks then come back and find out my 360 red rings on me :bomb:

Funny thing is that I was at gamestop today trading in some stuff and the geek behind the counter was gloating how the 360 breaks down and he had to send his in 3 times and he said each time he got a "NEW" one. Either the idiot doesn't realize it's a refurb or he bitched and moaned that he worked for gamestop and that he deserves a new one.

How long does it take Microsoft to ship out the coffin? They still haven't shipped my coffin (put it in the mail) yet and I'm getting pissed.

It takes about 5-7 business days.

Ok folks, the FAQ has been updated. Thanks for all the useful information and pics! Lets keep this growing. Updates are on the bottom of the FAQ.

Pretty good turnaround time this time. It took about 2 weeks from when I sent it out to get it back. I got a new unit made in 4/08. Does this mean I have the Jasper chip? I also got a bonus power supply and no explanation as to what exactly was wrong with the unit. Time to finish GTA.....

Lucky you :( MS will NEVER send out the reason why your 360 failed. They don't want to have proof that their systems break down a lot due to certain problems with the system. If they did that, class action lawsuits would fly.

Well my first 360 that has been running fine for the last 2 years suddenly got the RROD last night.

I went straight out to BB and bought an Arcade pack to replace it, I'll send my broken one to MS for fixing then trade it in at GS.

Nice FAQ, told me everything I needed to know.

Got my coffin last night and just got back from the Office Depot. The lady of course said Xbox when I handed it over and I said "yep." So know the ball is back in Microsoft's court.

office depot ? why office depot?

Got my system back today - it's the same one I sent them. I -guess- they actually fixed it? Seems a little suspicious - it came to them on the 11th, and was shipped out on the 12th.

I've got a bad feeling about this.

check your ports quickly

I Just got mine back and mine is the same too, but the cd drive is different. I read somewhere that they're starting to switch out the inside and keep the same case. i've tested all the usb ports and they work fine. HD DVD player is working. seems good.

check which drive is it, a benQ maybe?

Wouldn't a full gut replacement take longer then replacing a drive?

They take UPS packages and I needed a receipt just in case. That, and it was the nearest place that had a human drop off point.

Before I went to drop off my coffin I went to EB and the UPS guy just happened to be there. So I gave it to him and 45 seconds after driving away, I had a Oh S#@! moment. Not having a receipt is not ok! Was so paranoid my 360 was gone for good.

At this point it's not worth stealing a 360 that's red ringed and on it's way to microsoft. They rather jack it from the repair shop than jack one broken.

They didn't send my power supply back to me. Up to 2 weeks for it to arrive. They refused to overnight it, instead a free copy of Viva Pinata.

my SEVENTH xbox 360 broke....called and spoke to the supervisor and he hooked me up with several things, i got overnight shipping for my xbox 360. So i sent it out my non falcon and non hdmi xbox to them the same day. Two days later i recieve a BRAND NEW xbox 360 HDMI and Falcon in the box, three games (Viva Pinata PH, Shadowrun PH, and PGR 3 PH), a free 12 Month of LIVE and a free 4000 Point Code. This was very suprising to me and by far the best microsoft experience i have ever had. Hopefully this will be my last repair but probably not, good thing i got a three year warranty.

Yeah, I hear that when you start getting the higher repair amounts, they get a lot better with giving you stuff to compensate you. That's the best I've ever heard though. Congrats on that, and good luck with your 360.

They finally received my 360 about two days ago at the service center.

Should I call them and demand them to overnight it on its way back? It took like 2 days to get the coffin, I just don't want to wait 2 weeks for the 360 to come back.

It took exactly a month from the day I got the rings. I received a different 360 (had slight dent/black spot on old one that wasn't on the one i received) but it has been working on good condition even after multiple hours in a hot room.

dont DEMAND the overnight call 1-866-506-3826 and just REQUEST it and they usually will do it for you as long as its not your first repair and dont forget to give them your serial number. you may also be able to get a game or some free months of live or points out of them but dont demand to much or they might "accidentally" lose your 360 for a bit

now is this the 7th time you sent your in? That's way too much for one person. By at least the 3rd time you should have gotten a brand new one. Why is Viva Pinata being sent as a "standard prize?". Does the company have a few million laying around to give away for free? Same with SR and PGR3?

Still your one of the few people who have gotten a brand new unit (HDMI unit no less) rather than another refurb.

congrats

yes be polite and ask for an electronic email with the overnight label attached. That way you get it in about 12 hrs. I've asked for a free headset before but got shot down :( I'd wish they would build a better quality headset because I am going thru them once a month. :bomb:

Well it's my first repair.

It'd be nice if I could get a new headset out of them, mine is pretty much busted. Wonder if their warranty covers a peripheral like that?

I really can't believe how the new series of headsets (the one with the mute switch on it) conks out faster than the first generation. It's like it works great for about 2 weeks then it craps out. Either because some fucktard is screaming into his mic and it blows your ear piece or the mic piece wiring shorts out making it very difficult for people to hear you :(

You guys do know that your cell phone's headset (if you have one) can be used as a temporary replacement for the live mic right?

Just buy one of those $29.99 XBL 3 month kits or wait until there's a deal on CAG. If I remember right, the Halo 3 wireless headsets were $14.99 at Kmart.
