XBOX 360 Red Ring of Death FAQ: Soon to be known as the Red Dot of Death! :P

Finally got the dreaded RRoD and now my console is bricked.

Does anyone have any type of experience with Wal Mart and their warranties? I purchased a 2 year warranty with the system in November of 2006 and was wondering what all I would need if I were to try and exchange it using my warranty.

M$ is getting pretty fast with their turn around times. I opened my service order on the 5th and UPS says I will have it back on the 15th.

Less than 2 weeks.

Reading the FAQ, it seems that the general consensus is that it takes about 10 days from the time it reaches the repair center to the time they send it back.

MS received my console at 5:30am this morning and said that they have shipped it back out to me around 7:00pm this afternoon. This has me worried that they somehow didn't do anything to the console. Has anyone else had this type of return speed from MS ?

Did you check to see if the system being sent back was the exact same serial number as the one you sent in or a different one?
That's going to throw a red flag to the place you keep returning it to.
Eh, I really wouldn't care. I'd return it as many times as it broke. Happily, though, it didn't scratch the game again.

i sent my xbox in last week and they received it yesterday. hopefully they won't take forever trying to fix my xbox and that i get it back by next week.
Well my system just crapped out for the 8th time.
so this is number 8 for you? do tell if all of them died of RRoD. If MS has shipped you the 8th refurb, then your more within your rights to request a NEW boxed 360.

My refurb red-ringed this morning. Cause of death appears to be The Orange Box, leading me to believe that Orange + Red = Black. :(

Well this is strange...

When I booted up an hour ago to play another round of COD4, my machine was quite. Loading the game was ALSO quite... the loud "WHURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR" sound was gone.:whistle2:s

Check the back of the machine to feel if any hot air was being pushed out to check if the fans were still working and yep no problem. I have gotten use to the loudness of the 360 but now it seems to have become a quite drive.

Oh boy that can't be good.

Mine did that a few weeks ago. :whistle2:#

I'm STILL trying to send my Xbox in with the "Bad" Disk-Tray.
They still haven't sent a box. My third time calling today. I even spoke with a Supervisor.

So based on your recent RRoD... looks like I am going to get one soon huh?

I tried. It never comes. They never e-mail it.

Look back a few posts, there is a technique where you call..tell them your problem, GET A REFERENCE NUMBER, hang up then call the other number listed which is the next level up. Usually that level fixes the problem.

got mine back yesterday. Only took 11 days from the time i filled out the service ticket. Everything seems to work fine so far.

In theory, maybe. Mine did the whole "jetliner" sounds for quite a while whenever it ran something from the disc, and then miraculously stopped about 3 weeks ago. Caught me by surprise, and I thought I was safe.

Then that evil red-eyed bastard reared it's ugly head. :(

So in about 3-4 weeks from now I am going to Red Ring huh? Well If It does happen, then am still within the 90 days.

If you'd like to speed up the process, I successfully induced the RRoD on a second system tonight. It's not nearly as hard as I thought it'd be. ;)

oh no, I am not in a rush to Red Ring... I am doing so well in COD4 multiplayer and got GTA4 the other week.

When it happens, this place will be the first to know :bomb:

son of a bitch. I just lost about 2 hours of game in Lost Odyssey from my first ever RRoD. And I didn't save...

Better now than after the warranty expires.. still... I forgot to save.

Well, I've been turning it back on and the 3 lights are not there anymore. I called CS and they said that if my console isn't completely out it's better just to keep it because if they find nothing wrong with it, they'll just send me the same one back.

Should I ask for the coffin anyways?

So my launch 360 finally bit the dust via RRoD 3/10. Wanting an HDMI version I picked up an arcade produced in 2008 on 3/15 and today that one starts freezing every time I turn it on. These things are the worst piece of electronics ever produced.

Finally remembered this thread.

Febuary 20th: 3rd Elite which refuses to play ANY disks is recieved by Repair Center. Yes. This is the third Elite that has broken down like this.

April 24th: Replacement unit finally recieved.

In between are three phone calls to Support, the last of one was with a very unpleasant woman who was incredibly hostile.

I'm not really pleased. And the downtime was long enough that I got used to /not/ playing. This is probably a good thing, as I've started to regret ever buying a 360. My younger brother pressured me into buying one, and my mother felt it would be a good way for her sons to stay in touch over long distances. Blah.

Add me to the Ranks of the Ring. I was playing CoD 4 a couple nights ago, and it kept crashing whenever I tried to get into a game; tried starting it up on Saturday, and it kept giving me the ring of death. I called the repair center on Sunday, and the box got to me today (Tuesday!), but yeah...a little annoyed. Followed all the protocol with it, upgraded to an HDMI one made in late 2007 to make sure this didn't happen, and boom.

Sad that my NES has been around since I've been born, and still works perfectly, yet my upgraded 360 breaks after less than a year of use.

Has anyone had issues with M$'s service status site?

http://service.xbox.com/servicehome.aspx

I'm trying to check the status of my repair and the site has been down for me since late last week. I wasn't too bothered since I've been out of town, but now it's obnoxious....
It's not my computer or network, I've tried in two different states from three different computers.

Lock ups are usually a hint that a RROD is around the corner. That happened to me during Halo 3. Even on Forge map building!!

Anyways...some people can't seem to understand why their 20+ year old NES is still ticking while their 360 craps out on them after a few months. It's simple. The 360 is 200 times more advanced and more complex than the NES. It produces more heat and has more moving parts then the NES did. Therefore is it prone to breaking down more. I know there are more issues involved but just trying to set a point.

I actually posted about my problem with my 360 having graphics problems like almost 4 months ago. I had that problem where no graphics are displayed, but the audio and system work just fine. Well, I have towel tricked the fuck out this thing for months and got a ton of gameplay out of it, but just these past few days I saw my 360 get its first ever RRoD. My system would boot and show video very consistently, but now it would freeze a lot. Now I am getting the RRoD a lot more, so I'm finally going to send it out to get repaired.

I had a system manufactured on 12/15/05, so this system just did not seem to want to die. Guess I'll pick up Ninja Gaiden II when it gets back.

MAN DOWN!

After a year and four and a half months, my 360 has bitten the big one. No real warning signs except for it thinking games were DVDs for a little bit, but if I turned it off then back on, it worked fine. As I was playing GTA4 tonight, I got hit by a cab and died.. which was funny, because I was running from the cops, and I was like "I want an epic death! I'll jump from this bridge and die!".. but I didn't, and then got hit by a cab.. anyway, I spun my chair around to check CAG, and I hear a loud bzzt.. I knew exactly what had happened. I turned around to discover the screen looked like a purple and black checkerboard. I turned it off then back on, and yep, RROD.

I'm not angry.. I'm a bit pissed that my 122 game collection will be put on hold for the time being (I was about to re-start Bioshock, too).. and I really want to play some Rock Band right now, but oh well. Maybe I'll get a system with HDMI when it comes back.

I'm also kinda pissed that the XBox Repair Center isn't open right now

Haha I just had the BEST CS rep ever. He asked me if I was familiar with the repair process, I said "Oh yeah.. I also work retail so I have to tell customers about it all day long, too!" and he asked where I worked, then he told me he used to work at a retail store (he gave a specific name but I'm withholding any info that could potentially get him in trouble, but it wasn't Gamestop.) and then we talked about stuff for like 20 or 30 minutes. He was an awesome guy.

..I wish I worked at Microsoft :(

what?

You must have talked to an American then. I don't see how he could get in trouble if you told us where he use to work.

And no, you don't want to work for Microsoft right now or ever.

Yeah, he was American. Mid-20s, young sounding guy.

Every time I call (five times now, once on a non-RROD related issue), I get an American.. except once. The guy that wasn't American, right before giving me my reference number, asked me if I had any kids. WTF?

And I'd love to work at MS. I never said I wanted to work for the CS department.

So I got RRoD for the second time now. Had the check board pattern previously described, then audio but no video, then RRoD. When I called up for a coffin this time, I told the rep it was my 2nd RRoD. She says that since it is my second time, I need to send in my power cable and power "unit" aka brick in as well as the console. I guess I will do it, but from what I recall, the coffin wasn't too large, I wonder if it all will fit inside. What is the current wait time?

You should have requested an overnight delivery label since it was your second RRoD and done it over email for it to arrive in a few hours instead of a few days.

I got the RROD today. I bought my console in July, so it hasn't even worked for a year. I called Microsoft, and spoke to an Indian woman. Everything went pretty smoothly, and I should be getting a coffin somewhere around Friday.

So after calling for the coffin on the 16th, I got a phone call from Microsoft saying they were cancelling my service request citing a "problem with my address". They said I'd need to give them the address again or give them a new one.

Bullshit. Calling elevated service NAO.

Anybody know a cheap B&M where I can purchase a cardboard box to ship my 360 in? UPS wanted 6 dollars for a box. That is insanity. They don't even give blowjobs with the box for 6 dollars.

quick question on the 3 year RROD warranty....does the 3 year warranty re-set every time you send in a 360 for RROD service?

Nope.
Under No Reason, Do They Extend Warrenty, Unless You Pay.

(That's what I was told)

My console RROD'd last night. Have a call in for a coffin. Thanks for the FAQ. I never would have thought to try all the USB ports and such.

That was cheap..they forced me to pay 10 bucks for it :bomb:

My 360 just got RROD for the first time, I thought it wouldn't happen to me, I've had it for over 2 years. Ugh, customer service was quick and knew what I was talking about at least.

Got two pieces of junk back today.

My freeze-o-matic Arcade HDMI was replaced with a unit four months older than the one I sent in.

My original launch unit was repaired. Serial number is the same.

I have lately been speculating how much entertainment I would have gotten out of including a hidden camera in my box to track it's cross country journey. Is it lonely in Colorado? What is it doing when it is not in transit? does it get any air? what interaction does the UPS driver have with it? Who will repair it in Texas, migrant workers? Robotcyborgs? Gerbils? Transsexuals? I want to see the inside of McAllen, Texas damnit! where's a spy cam?

On another note, I have been trying to learn how to play WoW on my Mac Mini (I'm NOT living with vista, hooray) in the meantime. I'm level 8 hunter. I decided I need to upgrade my monitor to something other than an old CRT. I would like to point out, I had 1 prior RRoD, which heavily influenced my computer buying decision. MS loses money because of the poor reputation their 360 hardware has garnered.

At least MS didn't make any money off of me from Ninja Gaiden 2, which I would have bought if I had a console to play. MS: your attach rate is hampered by your shitty hardware.
Vent done. Thanks support group.

Geo is now waiting on his first coffin. Geo bought 360 day Oblivion came out. Geo is shocked it lasted this long.

Geo could have ordered his electronic UPS label over the phone or email...Geo could have gotten it in about 12 hours...but now Geo must wait 5-7 days for the coffin.

Feh. This works for me. I'm patient enough. MGS4 is out eventually.
