XBOX 360 Red Ring of Death FAQ: Soon to be known as the Red Dot of Death! :P
You are most likely getting a refurb.
Shit now i gotta deal with the damn drm and i don't have access to the gamer tag that bought most of my live games .
I wouldn't mind a refurb if it means playing GTAIV faster...
You will be damn lucky if you get it back by GTA4 Launch day.

I know, and I doubt I will. I just want it back by 5/13 (Summer vacation)

what ever you do, don't tell that to Microsoft!!!

:bouncy:

k, got the package from the repair center.

Surprisingly, they sent me back my old console repaired - this is a good thing. All of my Live Arcade games work offline, no more RROD.

It appears that they may have swapped the mobo and added new cooling to my machine. I needed to re-pair controllers which likely indicates it is a new mobo, and the fans are now significantly quieter than before.

In short, as long as this doesn't break within a month, I'm very satisfied with the repair process.

Honestly I would rather NOT have my old console back and have a brand new one (created this year). But hey congrats!

they got it yesterday, sent it back today, that's fucking weird. i hope they didn't think there was nothing wrong with it...dammiiiitttt. it better work when i get it back

Shipped mine off this morning. The woman behind the counter knew what i was doing before the door closed behind me. I asked her how many she gets a day and she said a lot, but since they get replaced with new ones she said most people were happy with it. I told her that you dont really get new ones, and she looked at me like i didnt know what i was talking about. Mabey shes a microsoft rep too lol.

Now i guess i play the waiting game and continue playing my PS2.

Right now im working on Gundam vs Zeta Gundam, what games are others passing the time with?

Got it back, had to call FedEX because MS screwed up the address on the label.

Anyways, they sent me back the replacement console that only lasted less than 24 hours (E74 & drive was acting crazy).

This one is working fine so far, I think they replaced the drive because it opens and closes better than before. Played a good couple hours of Earth Defense Force & Knights of the Old Republic 2. No problems yet.

Whatever, it works and that's what counts I guess.

And go through the minimum month-long DRM-transfer process (takes up for 6 months for some)? A new one with HDMI would be nice, but the FAQ of the OP states that you will get back whatever you send in HDMI-wise.

Also, I am skeptical about the "brand new ones". My cousin got a "new" one back from the repair depot with a manuf date of late November 2007 (in late December) and it was not an HDMI model. It also is super loud, much louder than his original 2006 model and my original 2005 model. On the other hand my repair is quieter than his "new" model, and I get to keep all my DRM licenses intact.

IIRC they stopped making the non-HDMI versions for sale in stores in like August 2007, no? My guess is that they are remanufacturing consoles using leftover GPUs, CPUs, etc, from past repairs. Think about it, with 99% of the problem being the motherboard warping from excessive heat, that leaves a ton of CPUs, memory, optical drivers, and probably even many GPUs that are fine. If they binned all of these extra parts and then remanufactured them with new motherboards & HSFs, they would likely have new serial #s, manuf dates, and whatnot since the parts are from all different consoles. Since they are sending you back the console via repair service, they do not need to guarantee that a newly manufactured unit is in fact made with new parts AFAIK.

Either way, if HDMI is taken out of the equation there shouldn't be much difference between getting yours repaired and a "new" one from the repair depot, assuming in both cases the job is done right. The new revision motherboard and heatsink/fan design greatly lowers chances of most of the RROD-causing issues (excessive heat warping mobo).

fuck you Microsoft. fuck you right in the ear.

I've been calling for 2 fucking months to get my DRM issues fixed, getting the same "you'll get a call from a specialist" message over and over. I finally laid down the law telling them I am asking you to give me something for continuing to wait. And a supervisor fed me bullshit about not being able to offer compensation but assured me the team would take that request and "might" honor it.

I told him that since he doesn't know the "specialist" team, anything he says offers me no reassurance because he is just telling me what he is supposed to. He doesn't know shit. fuck Microsoft!

BTW, until today I've been stupid nice to these people having worked at a call center myself. So I know EXACTALLY how this place is run. I've made 5 other calls and been probably too nice.

My 360 has been giving me disc unreadable messages on a lot of my games ever since I've had it. This past week or so, though, I've been getting them a ton. Before it pops up, there's always a clicking noise. Yesterday, I was playing COD4 and heard the clicking noise. I kept playing, hoping it would go away(it does sometimes), but eventually I just turned it off. I turned it back on, and it can get to the main screen but the second I'm about to join a game, the disc unreadable message comes up.

I thought it might just be the disc, so I try .skate. It comes up with a message saying "to play this disc put it in an xbox 360 console" like this: http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/4835/yikespd7.jpg

Now this happens to all my games other than COD4, and even that gives me disc unreadable errors after one game if I'm lucky enough to join one before it pops up.

I assume my disc drive is ****ed up, so I guess I have to send it in for repair. But the extended warranty only covers the 3 red lights(right?) so now should I just wait it out, or somehow overheat it to get the RROD. Thanks in advance for the help.

Yep your drive is fucked up.

Next time you play your 360 listen carefully to the hard drive and the DVD drive. See if the hard drive clicks. if the hard drive is clicking, then you better some how back your shit up.

It used to click, but now it doesn't. I can still only play COD, however. I did just play for about an hour without a disc read error. I don't get it...

i never had clicking noises but before i got the rrod i was beginning to get disc unreadable messages frequently. The first and most often one was cod4, then rock band..then i got the rrod. I tend to think that they are related.

Hola,

I recieved my 1st RROD 4/26 (righ before GTA IV no less) and it's about 20 months into having my 360.

My question for fellow CAG's is what should I expect from Microsoft. What is the turn arround time? I ask because I am leaving for a 2 week vacation to Mexico, and do not want the box returned when I am on vacation. (Vacation is May 17th to June 1st)

So do I wait 2 weeks and send the box in as I leave, or do I send it now?

Will it be refurbished, or will I get a new console with HDMI?

What are your experiences.

Thanks for helping a fellow CAG out.

Turnaround time was around 2 weeks for me. I'd definitely wait until you leave to send it in. And perhaps call your local UPS warehouse/distribution center to see if they can hold your packages until you get back as it may get back before you do.
I got a refurbished unit that was newer than the one I sent. There were no models with HDMI when I sent mine in but I highly doubt you'd get one with HDMI.

Also, this should have been posted in the 360 forum, though I'm sure a mod will come along soon and move it.

I had a question about the repair process...

On Sunday night 4.27.08, I received my notification that my Xbox was repaired (serial number didn't change) and the device was being sent back to me; I also received a tracking #. Today 4.29.08 - I checked the tracking and it still states "BILLING INFORMATION RECEIVED". I noticed there was a scheduled delivery date of 05.05.08 listed... which a week was out. Could this be accurate or does the date change when shipped?

How long does "BILLING INFORMATION RECEIVED" status typically remain (how long does it take to actually ship from the center?)

Also - for the people that received the same unit (same serial) was the performance better?

Thanks for your input.

Well it finally happened. The sad thing is the way I found out. I had been cleaning up my apartment today and was moving some stuff that was on the couch when I accidentally hit the power button on my wireless controller, looked over at the console and saw the RROD. I guess it could have been worse, it’s not like I just walked through the door from purchasing GTAIV or anything. Well I have the Best Buy 2 Year Product Replacement Plan and decided to give them a call. They said just to bring everything in and they would replace it. I hope things go that smoothly because I have heard of Best Buy making some people jump through hoops. I’ll keep yall updated.

From what I read/head as long as you/they have the records on file, and your still under the warranty you should be able to get another brand new unit. So it shouldn't be a problem.

My old POS 360 had hardware problems so I returned it with my warranty the store and bought a brand new unit (though it was manufactured in 2006). It was working beautifully for about a week but today, after playing GTA IV, the big power button has been stuck in. You can barely press it in, and sometimes the start up screen freezes. Anyone have a solution? Is the RROD already my way? What a piece of shit! I've never had so many problems with a console.... this is my third 360 so far and it's been nothing but issues...

Weird I sent off my 360 that had the RROD, the repair center recieved it at 7:00 pm yesterday at the repair center, and it's already on its way back to me lest then 24 hours later.......Why so freaken quick?

same for me. i really don't want the same one back, especially considering it was a refurb in the first place, but i really can't complain much. This is much quicker than last time.

How can you tell if your getting the same one back???

SO fucked up, i just got my 360 like 10 minutes ago and now i have to go to work until 11 tonight, this is exactly why i don't believe in a higher power. LOL
How can you tell if your getting the same one back???
i have a fed ex tracking number and my serial number hasn't changed. by this point last time, i already had a new serial number showing on xbox.com. so, i'd say it's safe to assume they're sending the same one back.
Im just afraid once I get it back, it will RROD again when I pop in GTAIV
I am afraid of this.... GTAIV seems like a huge game that will push the 360 to the limits and trigger a RROD.

looks like my tracking number updated and i'll be getting my xbox back on friday. that's a 2 week turnaround from the day i called it in.. pretty solid, considering.

I'm about to call M$ and tell them to fuck off. I have not been able to get past the "First Date" mission on GTAIV due to the shit M$ put out. My 360 has locked up one me and some how lost the controler port. The game loaded up and some how it jumbed to port 2 and had to be reset. Then the damn thing locked up on me. I'm about ready to just start buying for my PS3. Has anyone been able to send theirs in and it not do the rrod yet? I'm just sick of all the lock ups and am thinking about calling and saying it did it and just sending it in.

That won't work. They got a tracking system that is tied to the serial you registered with them. If they don't have it in their system, they don't have your unit.

I'm about ready to say fuck this and just let the thing run. I don't want to buy a new one but also dont want to burn my house down also.

This is why I keep my 360 and brick towards the window and away from everything else, except it's near my computer.

Overall good experience for the repair process for me: Sent in my coffin last Wednesday...received my replacement today--7 days...much faster than the 2 weeks it took last RROD.

for all of you out there that have had to send your boxes in, has anyone ever used any of the cooling solutions out there? (i.e. air flo 360, intercooler) i'm just asking because my launch box finally died on me last week (microsoft will receive it tomorrow) and i had been using the air flo 360 cooler from pelican since last summer not only as a cooling device but also for the multiple video outputs. i'm just wondering if you guys think it made a difference in prolonging its life. i bought a set of official 360 vga cables from TRU because they were on clearance and am wondering if i should ditch the cooler once i get my 360 back.

Mine is infront of a window also. I guess I will just play gtaiv from when I get home from work sunday till some time late monday or till the system dies. I am having more issues with it locking up with GTAIV then I have with the other games it does this on.

AVOID USING THESE THINGS! The Intercooler has been known to do damage to the back USB ports (burn them actually) and affect the power flow to the 360. MS has clearly stated that if they find such a scorch mark on the back they will NOT fix the unit no matter if it RROD.

i haven't heard of the Intercooler doing damage to the USB ports because it draws its power from the power junction where you connect the power supply to the system. if there is a short of any kind with the older versions it could cause a spark and melt the plastic into the system. the newer versions were redesigned with metal parts. the one i used was USB powered, therefore drawing on minimal amounts of power in comparison.

however i think i will switch to the official vga cables from now on and if it dies again, it dies.
