Welcome to the Xbox Deals and Discussion thread.

General info
  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console. Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work. Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold. You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold. Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

  • All known sales and information on sales should make their way into the OP. Major Nelson usually updates his blog with new sales information every Tuesday.
  • ALL OFFERS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE! No information within this thread can or should be construed as accurate (or still valid), therefore ...
  • Always verify Xbox Live Marketplace prices before your purchase!
  • Spend wisely, have fun, and enjoy!

Game Pass potential departure dates

Last updated - 2024-05-02
What is this?
Game prices in the Xbox store have a UTC end date associated with them. These dates generally fall into 5 categories :
  1. The item is currently on sale. These are usually the weekly sale items that end Tuesday mornings at 09:59:59 UTC.
  2. The item will go on sale, usually within 2-3 weeks. These are usually set to switch at 23:59:59 UTC, like the weekly sale on Monday evenings. Some of the major annual sales (Spring, Summer, Black Friday, Holiday) start on Thursday evening UTC, and some times appear to be random.
  3. The item is on Game Pass and is not currently or going to be on sale in the next few weeks. Third party games generally cluster around 09:59:59 UTC on the 1st and 16th of each month. Currently, at least one game is associated with every 1st and 16th through January 2025. The dates then spread out, ending with Human Fall Flat on July 1, 2028.
  4. First party and EA Play titles are farther out, starting in 2049, with many in 2799 and 9998.
  5. No date - some items do not have a price and so don't have a date. If the item is part of a bundle that has a price, the date from the bundle is used.
The list below uses the dates associated with games on Game Pass and EA Play. Time stamps in red are the regular Game Pass departure times and titles in red are confirmed to be leaving, either from Microsoft's regular news postings or by devs / publishers. Items available through Game Pass Core, currently on sale or not available for purchase are also color coded.

The date associated with a Game Pass game is not a guarantee it will leave on that date, but since March 2023 when the price data started getting analyzed, every game that's left Game Pass had been flagged as leaving on that date. It's given a number of people an extra heads up on the generally 2 week notice Microsoft provides.

If you have any questions about the list, please ask in the thread.

-My $10 auto-redemption went through this morning
-March Universal Rewards are up (Lone Survivor, Doom, Fast Five, Straight Outta Compton I think are all in 4k)

I got this e-mail for my auto redeem this month:
"We ran into some issues with your order
We're reaching out to let you know we ran into some issues with your order. As a result, your order has been voided. However, your point balance has not been impacted."

I received the $10 (expires May 29) and didn't lose any rewards points. I had this happen on a $100 Xbox credit redemption before.

The DLC for Phantom Breaker Battlegrounds (some of which is tied to achievements) is going to be delisted at midnight (UTC, I think, based on Bloomy's countdown) on March 4th, so buy while you can. This applies to the game and DLCs on PlayStation, Steam and Switch as well.
Thanks for the heads up! I purchased 2 of the DLC I did not already own. I think I may have messed up by purchasing from the XBox store and not from my XBox 360 though. The 2 DLC I purchased are still showing as not purchased on my XBox 360. I was able to download the DLC just fine on my Series X though. Probably won't play on my 360 anyways at this point so no big deal for me. Just a warning to others who may care about playing the DLC on an actual XBox 360.

Mine as well. I am not really keeping track but last month I earned a LOT more points than normal. The extra 520 or so points a week for playing a game on console really help out.
Wait, what is that? How did I miss these points for playing a game on the console?

I went pretty hard on getting rewards points last month, got over 20k, but looks like I missed out on some easy points...

On the phone app under "Play a PC game" has been a new quest "Play a game on console" worth 5 points every day. Once you do this 5 days (it started at 4) you get an additional 500 points. You probably got the points and just did not see it when you collected them.

Thanks for the info. So looks like I don't have it as a reward, at least not yet.

Was just looking over this page for more details:

Looks like the game has already been delisted from both the 360 Marketplace and the Xbox Store. Only the DLC is available.

Yeah, on 360 it was delisted last year during that weird delisting wave of 360 BC titles.
The game is still up for PlayStation, Switch and Steam though (until March 4th).
Forgot to post the source, so here it is:
Basically, these guys bought the IP rights for the series, so they're making a new version of this game to cash in and in an effort to force people to buy the shiny new version, they're nuking the older versions. Always thinks it's a scummy move to do this, or to at least not include the original versions as a purchase bonus but at least they gave a heads-up, I guess.
PC Xbox app has updated with the mid-month leaving soon list. Hardspace: Shipbreaker, Ni no Kuni Wrath of the White Witch™ Remastered and Shredders.
Credit to you by the way, I saw the DLCs on your list and that's what prompted me to investigate since I don't think two of those DLCs have EVER been on sale. Gut instinct was that they were probably being delisted.

I noticed them when pulling the list, thought they were a bit odd, but didn't do any follow up. Maybe if I had remember the base game was already delisted.

The Kurisu DLC actually was on sale at least once, back in Jan 2016. I guess it was initially priced at $4.99, because the old thread from that timeframe has it as $2.49 / 50% off for Gold the week of Jan 5-11. The base game was also on sale that week. I bought it then, not sure when it got a permanent discount to $2.99. I bought the Frau pack last year when the notice went up about the base game being delisted. Might bite on the music pack before it goes.

Edit: Saw you posted a thread under the game on TA. For increased visibility, I've also posted it in the suggest-news channel on the TA Discord, with the link you posted from the publisher.

Saw just a couple days ago someone saying 3 month GPU codes were on sale for 28k points. I should have been more proactive, as they are not on sale anymore. Hopefully they will be again

Yeah, the Frau and music packs were the ones I was talking about. I have the Kurisu pack from sales too.
Anyway, thanks for the assist. I submitted it through the "Suggest News" button on the site when I originally posted this morning but I imagine they're probably more likely to see it on Discord.

Anyone else having issues redeeming Argentina codes recently? Keep getting hit with “Something went wrong on our end” with the VPN connected.

Phantom Breaker is a pretty good beat em up. I own the Stiens Gate DLC but I think I'll just hold off since it says the HD remaster will include all of the other stuff. Not sure I'll actually buy that, the online was dead on day one, I doubt that will matter.

I bought both of the character pack DLCs for Phantom Breaker: Battlegrounds just before the game was delisted, but not the BGM DLC. Anyone think it's worth a buy? For reference:

Yeah, I've mostly just played local co-op. The Switch version didn't even have online, which just shows you how inactive it was.
Fwiw though, the new version will apparently have cross-platform play.
Hopefully it’s just a short term issue then. I’ve redeemed stuff pretty much every night this week after work, and last night was the first time I ran into this issue.
It could be a general error but I suspect it's an error based on some sort of region-circumventing detection. The sporadic nature of it makes me think it's possibly detecting that your current IP is from a VPN.

Turns out I have the reverse problem. Bought them on 360, show as owned on 360 but they don't show up as owned on the Xbox One/Series store but they do show up in the add-ons list on One/Series and are able to be downloaded. When I pull up their store listing on the Xbox One/Series, it says that the content is installed but is full-price for me to "Buy to Own" (akin to another profile on my Xbox owning the content). The purchases are in my transaction history (and they show as owned on 360) so I know it's not under another profile. Must be a license error or something, but it's funny (and good) that the content is registered as identical.

I still see the appeal of discs when the game on them is in an acceptable state. For people who have zero or basically zero internet, or the long-term outlook if a systems infrastructure goes down, patches and all. This is unfortunately somewhat hampered on Xbox One, Series X, and the new PS5 with separate disc drive since those consoles still need an activation to run games.

BG3 here makes sense, current version of the game is totally fine even though it won't be the final product. Sometimes you even get an interesting bonus like Elden Ring, that disc without the day one patch has almost entirely different descriptions for ALL items, different AI behavior on some bosses, at least one cut enemy, with the downsides being a couple unfinished quests and some slight balance issues.

When the build on the disc is unfinished and unplayable, Cyberpunk or THPS5, those are a waste of time/effort/plastic.

We also have all the long-term benefits that I think some of you who fully went digital seem to have forgotten. Ability to share, trade, sell games with anyone. Sometimes extreme deals. Games getting delisted.

I don't understand the desire for discs anymore. They just make you download everything anyways.
This probably won't affect us. Sounds like Nintendo gave up publishing rights.

It's your (full-digital) perspective.

People still buy Nintendo carts for a reason. They aren't affected by something like last week's issue, for instance. They own what is essentially a license of the game that works in perpetuity and cannot be revoked. It can also be re-sold; where another person receives your working copy of the game in perpetuity. There are still good publishers out there making complete, finished working titles. Polished games that work straight out of the box and do not require any updates or patches to function. In case the internet went down tomorrow and we entered a Walking Dead apocalypse.

I only buy physical copies if it has a cool collectible or steelbook I really want, has a deep discount vs digital, or if it's a game I definitely want to play but may not enjoy enough to finish so I can trade it in. Now my local gamestop has such a small section of physical games it's not even worth trading in anymore as all I end up getting is stuffed animals and pokemon cards for my kid at a 50% loss for the game price. Easier to buy digital on a decent sale and of course, not having to physically get up to change the carts or discs is nice 😂

I Trust Nintendo with physical for another generation or two only because they're always behind on figuring things out like digital and also because still cheaper to buy most of their stuff physical over digital.

Everyone else, well, after this gen I sure as hell don't see Microsoft giving two shits to physical preservation and Sony maybe a few years before giving up.

It's hard to display a digital collection on a shelf, but the older I get and the more I realize I have probably at least one more move to a new house left in me, my desire for physical things that could be digital instead just melts away.

I still actively collect empty SteelBook cases though, but that collection is comparatively much smaller.

I'm honestly hoping Nintendo actually DOES figure out digital fully. So far it's been a mess, flip flop 3 generations in a row, contracting outside companies to make bad services and so on. No ability to purchase their classic games. The only full price game I bought on Switch is Animal Crossing, and that was because it launched at the start of the pandemic lockdowns. Other than that I only buy stuff that is way on sale, digital only, and the FOMO scam Fire Emblem that they delisted for no reason.

I will absolutely never spend actual money on a digital product when I can choose to buy it physically instead (unless digital is significantly cheaper). However, I have a lot of Xbox currency built up from GameStop $5 coupons and Microsoft rewards, so I pretty much buy everything digitally because it’s “free”

Buying games free has certainly made transitioning to digital easier. I'm still working off the Doritos free Xbox money right now so keeping a keen eye on every sale. It's super easy to toss more crap in the backlog when it's on a decent sale and I have expiring credit every month.

I have 648 Xbox games. I don't have the space for that IRL. Not counting the 4 generations of PlayStation games i have or the NES or Master System stuff in the garage. I Already have over 1000 Blu-rays and shit taking up all corners of the house.

Picked up an early copy of New Star GP, the latest from the Retro Bowl devs, on GameFlip. It’s a blast. Arcade throwback look and feel with just enough sim aspects to make it more challenging than it appears. Highly recommended to racing game fans.

Digital is ultimately going to be how games are preserved. Even if you have a disc, you aren't going to have the add ons, patches and everything else games get these days.

I was a staunch physical fan all my life but as I get older certain realities are starting to hit.
1. Storage: Physical takes up too much space when collections get too large. That and actually setting up hardware has become a challenge. I no longer have a CRT so playing my old NES or Genesis has to be through with special cables for modern tvs and those......aren't accurate enough for me. Input delay is a massive problem and I just had to come to terms that unless I wanna dig out or shell money for original hardware, I need to get used to it. Playing light gun games is janky on modern hardware too.

2 Cost. I remember back in 2010 I almost bought Little Samson on NES but someone outbid me and I lost by $5. It was under $100 cart only. I checked this game during the lockdowns and that shit is over $1000 now. Nah, that ain't happening. We have Everdrive carts where we can play the game on original hardware that is a 1: 1 copy of any retail game plus the ability to use mods. In many cases, this is the only way certain rare and expensive games will ever even get exposure or play anymore. I've come to view original carts/hardware as collector pieces more than anything.

3. Destruction of media: The reality is physical media is on a timetable just as everything else and the last few years it's starting to really show for me. Something like Legend of Zelda on NES and it's battery dying is not a big deal, you can just replace it. But what about when the cart itself just dies? I don't even wanna guess how many games I own that no longer work but I just don't know because I haven't tested them in decades. And the CD games? Yeah, those are starting to show wear. My CD games from the early 90s are 30 years old and some have disc rot. Some just don't work anymore despite the discs being in pristine condition. I was bummed out when my copy of Shining Force CD no longer boot on any of my 4 sega cd systems and the disc is flawless. I'm sure as hell not buying another copy, I burned that on a CD-r and played it on original hardware cuz there is 0 piracy protection on Sega CD.
.
And then you have media being damaged or straight up just being destroyed. Severe incliment weather, thieves, children who put gameboy advance carts in syrup.......there is just so many things that can happen to your collection at any given point. Some of us are better are taking care of stuff more than others, but ultimately anything is vulnerable and it just takes a single moment to wreck something. Most of my collection is in storage for the past few years and I don't have access to the storage unit. I'm low key convinced most of that stuff has been stolen or destroyed and made my peace with it. No, not really. I want my damned retro collection and if I ever see NES carts on craigslists with Koopa kid stickers that say 'This game belongs to Strider Turbulence' I'm turning into an angry Karen and getting my shit back.

True but digital space is also a concern, hard drives can get corrupted, storefronts go down and licenses can get revoke, plus content gets pulled.

Either way, physical or digital, there's no guarantee and neither lasts forever.
