Welcome to the Xbox Deals and Discussion thread.

General info
  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console. Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work. Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold. You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold. Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

  • All known sales and information on sales should make their way into the OP. Major Nelson usually updates his blog with new sales information every Tuesday.
  • ALL OFFERS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE! No information within this thread can or should be construed as accurate (or still valid), therefore ...
  • Always verify Xbox Live Marketplace prices before your purchase!
  • Spend wisely, have fun, and enjoy!

Game Pass potential departure dates

Last updated - 2024-05-28
What is this?
Game prices in the Xbox store have a UTC end date associated with them. These dates generally fall into 5 categories :
  1. The item is currently on sale. These are usually the weekly sale items that end Tuesday mornings at 09:59:59 UTC.
  2. The item will go on sale, usually within 2-3 weeks. These are usually set to switch at 23:59:59 UTC, like the weekly sale on Monday evenings. Some of the major annual sales (Spring, Summer, Black Friday, Holiday) start on Thursday evening UTC, and some times appear to be random.
  3. The item is on Game Pass and is not currently or going to be on sale in the next few weeks. Third party games generally cluster around 09:59:59 UTC on the 1st and 16th of each month. Currently, at least one game is associated with every 1st and 16th through January 2025. The dates then spread out, ending with Human Fall Flat on July 1, 2028.
  4. First party and EA Play titles are farther out, starting in 2049, with many in 2799 and 9998.
  5. No date - some items do not have a price and so don't have a date. If the item is part of a bundle that has a price, the date from the bundle is used.
The list below uses the dates associated with games on Game Pass and EA Play. Time stamps in red are the regular Game Pass departure times and titles in red are confirmed to be leaving, either from Microsoft's regular news postings or by devs / publishers. Items available through Game Pass Core, currently on sale or not available for purchase are also color coded.

The date associated with a Game Pass game is not a guarantee it will leave on that date, but since March 2023 when the price data started getting analyzed, every game that's left Game Pass had been flagged as leaving on that date. It's given a number of people an extra heads up on the generally 2 week notice Microsoft provides.

If you have any questions about the list, please ask in the thread.

Holy hell. Wife is gonna kill me when she sees that thing.

Sent from my Pixel 4 XL using Tapatalk

PS5 making the Xbox Series X look like a GameCube in comparison. I remember thinking the Series X looked big on initial reveal but then Sony unzipped and flopped that thing out. Your guests will know if you have a PS5.

Used to be that if the wifey didn't care too much/wasn't paying attention, you could sometimes disguise that new console (e.g. xbox one s, or the one x as long as the color was the same).  You cannot disguise these new monstrosities.   :bomb:

Really depends on your entertainment center. The PS5 will fit in the top of mine (not on, in. On the top shelf). The X will not.

Also really entertained by all the complaints about the S and what it can and cannot do. Some people really don’t understand that the average parent might buy their child a $300 new system. Would not buy a $350 one. Definitely wouldn’t buy a $500 one. That $299 is a really serious price point.

I’m waiting for the belt accessory so I can just wear it out of the house ... 2020 needed a modern COD piece (see what I did there ... )

I don’t have room on my entertainment center for the X Series. I do have a subwoofer that isn’t hooked up next to it that I’ve kept my external hard drives on. That’s where I plan on putting it. I need a new entertainment center but I’m waiting until I get a new tv.

Is Sea of Thieves worth downloading?  I know that it's on the weekly Game Pass Rewards, but it's 40 GB, and I'd hate to download a game that sucked since it's going to take a while and count towards my monthly data cap.  Thanks in advance for any constructive responses.

They’ve added a lot since launch. Personally I still find it incredibly mediocre and empty. I’ve heard it’s better if you have friends to play with, as the ship mechanics really require a crew. I downloaded it a few months ago and it still felt really unpolished to me compared to better games. I’d skip it but I’m sure you’ll hear from some of its fans on here.

If you aren't sure you want to play it and have access to the GP app, you can just launch it through xCloud.

I think you're misunderstanding my point.
I'm not asking for the Series S to be the Series X. I'm asking for it to only support last-gen Xbone/360/OG Xbox games at least as well as the Xbone X. I don't think that's unreasonable.
I fully expected there to be a power gap between the Series S and the Series X but what I didn't expect was for the Xbone X to outperform the Series S (in some aspects). I'm not sure exactly what the weak link in the Series S is but I think it was dumb to not support BC games at 4k (at least to the extent the Xbone X did).
Whether you believe it or not, there are people besides me that soured on the Series S for exactly this reason.
Let's try this again. Do you care about the future of Xbox? If you answered yes then you know that MS had to make a very competitively priced console. There's no way that MS would be able to make a dent in the marketshare with PS4's 100+ million installed user base. I fully believe that they put in as much power as they could into the box to get it under $300. There's no way you could build a PC this powerful even with three times the budget!

Do you own a 4K TV? Then you should be getting the X. The Series S is better than the One X in every way. Due to the lower amount of ram it cannot run those high quality 4K textures however it's possible that through DLSS and machine learning that it can render images at checkerboard 4K which could look the same or better than the image quality of the OneX. Games with dynamic resolution will hit the high end of the resolution at a much higher framerate right out of the box without even needing a patch. The problem is with the older games early in the generation that were hardcoded to run at 900p. These games will need to be patched by either the devs or MS back compat team. Given how committed MS has been with their back compat initiative, this is not a big deal. You know they're committed to it. If it bothers you that much then just get the Series X for the extra power and piece of mind. An extra $200 spread out over the life of a console is not that much and worth it if that's what's going to make you happy. Don't settle for less than you deserve. I went all in this gen with PS4 Pro and One X. No regrets... except for my PS4 Pro which sounds like a possessed hairdryer.

So I got a question. If I have Gold until October 14th, 2022 and I get a 12 month code would it activate now or would i have to wait until that date this year? I would not do the autorenewal free month was just curious if I could do it now or have to wait? I want to get game pass ultimate for $1.

I downloaded it a few months ago and it still felt really unpolished to me compared to better games. I’d skip it but I’m sure you’ll hear from some of its fans on here.
If you aren't sure you want to play it and have access to the GP app, you can just launch it through xCloud.
I did a bit of research. It seems like a multiplayer affair and a bit of a slow burn. I'd like to get all of my weekly challenges in for the month, but there is another week ahead to do another weekly challenge for September, so I think that I might skip it. I've got plenty of games downloaded already.

Here’s the thing about the Series S ... we can all argue and speculate about it being able to match the 1X because of the newer technology, architecture etc. Ok ... so in the immediate moment it’s a decent upgrade that will be able to play any Series exclusives.

But what happens when 8K games start getting released for the Series X ... what happens when the gap between game quality starts looking like the X1 and XS currently? Because that’s where things are headed. From an economic standpoint the Series S seems like a great deal ... but for people who want longevity and guaranteed performance (not just higher resolution, but playing next gen games as intended) then the Series X seems like a no brainer.

I understand why the Series S exists, but I don’t understand why there are so many ardent defenders of it within the Xbox fan base.

You have to wait until the 14th of October to get the three years max, if you try it now it'll give you a can't process message. If you want the extra month that comes with turning on auto renew, wait until November 13.

Why wouldn't people defend the Series S? It's just a product, not a life long marriage. Don't like it, don't buy it. Current gen consoles ARE PCs. If all you have is a 1080p monitor and want to play 60 fps then buy a $300 graphics card but then don't go complaining when that $300 nvidia card can't run games at 8K 144Hz because it was never intended to. That's why $2000-$10000 graphics cards exist.

I agree that patches down the line are possible but it would have to be per game and therefore, would probably not hit most of the Xbone library unless the BC team put in major work. But it's a shame that all that work could have been avoided.
Fwiw, Xbone X patches aren't just 4K, but can include stuff like a boosted framerate, antialiasing, better draw distance, better textures, better effects, etc.
Unfortunately, they can't just carve the 4K res out of the X patches and leave everything else.

I agree that the Series S will hit bottlenecks at some point but it's a budget entry point like any budget PC. It won't hold anything back, but you get what you pay for and people are right when they say the Series X is worth the $200. I was hoping the Series S would be a solid sidegrade/minor upgrade for my Xbone X to grab for cheap at the beginning of the gen and ultimately, a good secondary box after I got a Series X but I guess I'll just skip it for the Series X at a later date.

I just want a better 4K Blu Ray player. I'm not a big fan of the one in the Xbox One X. My favorite DVD or Blu Ray player in a video game console was probably the one that they did in the Xbox 360, that had way more features and settings. You could actually turn 4:3 dvd images into widescreen, and it would upscale them. And, the results were pretty good. The Xbox One X appears to do no upscaling to normal DVDs, and they just appear as a blurry mess on a 1080p TV, and way worse on a 4K one. I'm hoping that the PS5 or the Xbox Series X will properly upscale DVDs, like they do for Blu Rays. I know it's a weird request that I shouldn't care about since it's a video game console. But, I hope that the software is better this time around. I also hope that the PS5 supporting PSVR, means that it will still support 3D Blu Rays. Since you can actually watch 3D Blu Rays using the PSVR headset. Since Sony is still holding a torch for them.

Let me clarify ... I’m surprised people on CAG are defending it, given that while it’s lower in price, it doesn’t seem to be the better long term deal. Regardless of the 4K issue, the lack of ram will eventually be an issue. 10GB vs 16Gb ... either Series S game quality will suffer or Series X potential will always be somewhat limited by the need to produce relative parity between the consoles because they’re both in the Series line.

Honestly, the Series V might be worth the wait as a potentially all digital but more powerful version of S.

Why you buying anything but the Series S on a tv that size ;) (for the Dire Straits "Money for Nothing" video mock ups)

It's just the Xbox One generation all over again. The One S and One X were hindered by having to make games that would run on the VCR Xbox One for their whole life cycle. Even now, any games made for the One S and One X still need to be made to work on the original. It's going to be that way even when we get a Series S+ and a Series X+. They'll still have to make games that work for the original Series S. The smartest thing that Sony has done this generation so far, is only giving people one console option when it comes to power, and just giving them the choice of disc drive, or no disc drive. It's probably what Microsoft should have done. Because, despite the Series X being the "most powerful" console on Earth, Sony will have the edge, because they don't need to dumb down their PS5 games for a weaker hardware version.

Wait you're telling me there might be a difference in game quality between a Series S and a Series X? That extra $200 actually means something? I wonder how the hell PC has adapted to this for over 30 years...

For the Sea of Thieves weekly gamepass challenge you just need to launch the game, dont even need to start the game, just start the X-cloud gamepass app on your phone, start the game and it should pop right away.

I agree about the RAM. I said it was a mistake the first time I heard about it especially if it's why the Series S won't get those Xbone X patches. Tbf, it could be other things too but the RAM is the most obvious corner cutting (how much more would an extra 2 GBs of RAM at better speed have been anyway?)

Honestly, the Series V might be worth the wait as a potentially all digital but more powerful version of S.
To be accompanied by the Series XX. :bouncy:

yeah really good Xcloud week, got Dungeon of the Endless in 2 minutes

Do you have anybody in your family who would be willing to log on to your Xbox One, go into the digital store, and pre-order the console for you?
Thank you. Managed to get the time off..I need to change the shipping address so got the website link up for now.

I'm defending it cause I don't live in a CAG bubble. I have friends and family outside of here so I'm aware there is a market for people that don't live and die gaming like people on here. For those people the S is perfect. For uber gamers like us there is the X.

See that’s the thing, I think Microsoft is capitalizing on the average customers lack of information and the knowledge they’ll buy whatever is cheapest, even if it’s not to their benefit.

Consoles aren’t PCs ... the whole point of a console is that you buy a game, it works, period. I can’t imagine Microsoft will ever allow a game to function exceptionally well on the Series X but lack significant features on the S. Thus, we get a scenario where the weakest link holds back what the Series X is capable of. Microsoft was able to avoid this issue to an extent with the X1S because it was cheap, it was late in the console life cycle, and it was the prototype for the Series S (specifically the digital only S that saw limited release). I don’t know if consumers will be as supportive if games look dramatically different on the X vs the S in a few years. It seems risky.

While Microsoft is going to score major points with Game Pass, their hardware choices seem riskier than Sony’s. I read the PS5 was specifically designed to have parity in features between the disc and digital model because they had a bad experience in the past releasing two tiers of systems.

Even if your friends and family aren’t die hard gamers, hopefully they don’t get a bad deal as this next generation of consoles hit their stride.

Damn. This is like the battle over the next Supreme Court justice in here.
I think that Judge Sony PlayStation should be our next Supreme Court Justice. A Japanese woman would bring some much needed diversity to the court.

First all businesses do that. Our whole system of economics is based on unequal access to information.

Second, how do you know anything is holding anything back. Like chill. PC gaming does just fine and there are various levels of graphics cards.

Lastly I don't mind getting a bit of a downgrade if it means that people with less money than I do get access to gaming at a lower price. The world doesn't revolve around us. Think about about countries outside of the US that have lower incomes than we do.

You'll be fine. By a Series X if it's that big of a deal.

but you're wrong, consoles are PCs now, and how would it be not to someone's benefit if they got a Series S played some GamePass and Madden, fortnite and never even knew the difference for $300 instead of $500. In a few years guess what the Series X will be where the Series S is now and something else will take it's place. Btw What are you reading, where in this great god's green earth have you ever seen that Sony has released a system with "two tiers" before PS4 and PS4 pro. If anything the Ps4 pro was a success for them.

Why are you mentioning framerate as an advantage for the One X when the Series S has been confirmed to run 120Hz, something never before seen on a console while majority of One X games are running 30fps. You will still be getting antialiasing, improved draw distance and all that good stuff on the S with the superior framerate and near instant load times. The only thing you won't have is native 4k but the S will upscale to 4K no problem. Isn't that worth it for everything else you're getting? Read the eurogamers article. All it takes is changing 3 lines of code on the back compat games. Tell that to the PS5 owners who's PS4 games are not getting any enhancements at all, majority of them will be running on PS5 same as it did on PS4 except with more stable framerate. No HDR, improved textures, LOD, anti-aliasing, nothing. And back compat with PS1-PS3 games only exist in Shangri-La because Sony doesn't give a shit about back compat with their previous generations.

I'm not a Day 1 console buyer, never have been, never will but I am really really really excited to see what next gen mid-gen console refreshes will look like. Maybe the Series X will come down to $300 and they'll have a souped up Series XX to take it's place. God knows Sony will have to come out with a slim version of their current monstrosity.

Out of curiosity, who’s going to go to a store to preorder and how early are you going to get there before?
I might drive by the local gamestop at 10am, have a look. I'm doubting any line here for that store. Only time they've had one is the NES mini.

Do we know the power draw on the S vs X? Let’s not forget the difference in ongoing electricity costs in our analysis. 😛

I’ve got a 1X and will be holding out until a bundle or at least special edition. I want to see what these smart delivery game sizes look like and the perceptible difference in quality between models.

I don't see why anybody would risk their life going into a store right now just to pre-order a console, when you can do it just as easily online, and not run the risk of catching Covid from some psycho who refuses to wear a mask.

You waiting to see the actual difference between the models is the smartest thing. Seriously.

I'm a tech hoe so I would by a tech thing even if it was made of shit. Lol

For actual smart people. Waiting is the best thing.

When I can upgrade a GPU, swap out an internal SSD, install an alternative operating system or add components then consoles will be PCs. Yes, consoles are equivalent physically in many ways to PCs, but they are still closed systems that hold the expectation that you can just boot up and go. I get what you’re saying but there’s still a core difference.

And the Sony thing was an off hand comment in an article ... I don’t recall which, but it’s clear that they want to avoid the issue of having consoles performing at two distinct levels.

PS5 pre-orders in person at GameStop were 10 times easier than online. Unless you wanted a bundle. I agree with not going out for a console though. It's definitely a risk. I went out for the PS5 because I was wearing a mask and I know in my area everyone is wearing masks. It was a stupid risk to take and I can totally recognize that.

Normally I would wait. But, almost full backwards compatibility with the previous generation for both consoles makes it feel like a worthwhile upgrade right now. Even though the consoles are really just an Xbox One XX, and a PS4 Pro Pro, in terms of power. They'll still be getting the newest games, and unless you have a really pricey gaming PC, this is the game that you have to play every five or so years, if you want to keep gaming with your friends.

Have they said in any of the documentation how much external drive space is allowed. Currently 16 TB and I’m almost full. Yes I have a big problem

And I’m certainly still going to get a Series X anyways just curious if I can upgrade my hard drives as well

I think your problem is going to be that the new games have to be stored on those fancy new ssds that they have now. All the storage stuff is super confusing though.

Let’s believe everything Company X says about their soon to be released product ... I’m sure none of these fine companies are hyping up machines that could be weak links in their market strategy. 😎
