Welcome to the Xbox Deals and Discussion thread.

General info
  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console. Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work. Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold. You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold. Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

  • All known sales and information on sales should make their way into the OP. Major Nelson usually updates his blog with new sales information every Tuesday.
  • ALL OFFERS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE! No information within this thread can or should be construed as accurate (or still valid), therefore ...
  • Always verify Xbox Live Marketplace prices before your purchase!
  • Spend wisely, have fun, and enjoy!

Game Pass potential departure dates

Last updated - 2024-05-21
What is this?
Game prices in the Xbox store have a UTC end date associated with them. These dates generally fall into 5 categories :
  1. The item is currently on sale. These are usually the weekly sale items that end Tuesday mornings at 09:59:59 UTC.
  2. The item will go on sale, usually within 2-3 weeks. These are usually set to switch at 23:59:59 UTC, like the weekly sale on Monday evenings. Some of the major annual sales (Spring, Summer, Black Friday, Holiday) start on Thursday evening UTC, and some times appear to be random.
  3. The item is on Game Pass and is not currently or going to be on sale in the next few weeks. Third party games generally cluster around 09:59:59 UTC on the 1st and 16th of each month. Currently, at least one game is associated with every 1st and 16th through January 2025. The dates then spread out, ending with Human Fall Flat on July 1, 2028.
  4. First party and EA Play titles are farther out, starting in 2049, with many in 2799 and 9998.
  5. No date - some items do not have a price and so don't have a date. If the item is part of a bundle that has a price, the date from the bundle is used.
The list below uses the dates associated with games on Game Pass and EA Play. Time stamps in red are the regular Game Pass departure times and titles in red are confirmed to be leaving, either from Microsoft's regular news postings or by devs / publishers. Items available through Game Pass Core, currently on sale or not available for purchase are also color coded.

The date associated with a Game Pass game is not a guarantee it will leave on that date, but since March 2023 when the price data started getting analyzed, every game that's left Game Pass had been flagged as leaving on that date. It's given a number of people an extra heads up on the generally 2 week notice Microsoft provides.

If you have any questions about the list, please ask in the thread.

I got the part in Peru where the get the transwarp drive and was so bored I refused to waste anymore time watching it. The humans were worse than in previous movies, they did Wheeljack totally wrong and the use of Maximals was disappointing.
Agreed. It got me thinking, what's the point of even having humans in the transformers movies anymore? It's as if the Transformers take a backseat to humans in their own movie. Just have a fully Transformers movie on Cybtertron. I think that would be way more interesting.

That being said, I think it's worth sticking out just for the end scene. I didn't think the movie was boring, just had to roll my eyes at some of the cheesy dialogue.

I just played about 20 minutes of Persona 5 Royal and I'm already vibing with it. I think I've seen enough to know I'll enjoy it. Definitely (blind) buying this when the time comes! Now to move on to demoing other games on the service...

*Crosses fingers* they can manage to find the source code.

Humans in the G1 cartoon were done well. In the live action, the humans working with Autobots were pretty much there just to yell “Optimus!!!!” I did like Mark Wahlberg in the previous two and Megan Fox was better than Shia in the two she were in. The ending may have been cool but unlike the previous ones, i actively felt like I was totally wasting my time and didn’t care what happened. Which sucks cause I love Beast Wars. I got up on Saturday mornings in college to watch it.
I hope someone finds the original copies of the Cybertron games so they can be put backwards compatible. Those were great games.

I was downloading the latest BC games I purchased to a hard drive and remembered a trick I read about for Dead or Alive 3. If you set your system region to UK before downloading it, you get the European release of DOA3 that has the CGI intro, more costumes, and extra moves. The costumes and CGI intro were later included on a booster disc for the US version.
This is amazing info. Hopefully it works with a disc copy.

I just had to unplug my console because a game was stuck, but when I rebooted I had the new dashboard installed. Maybe try that if you are waiting to check it out.

But holy shit, most played games being locked to the first tab is so stupid. Get ready to permanently see Fortnite, Warzone, Roblox, GTA, and Minecraft permanently in this section.

Not going to lie I just realized they were talking about ff 14 I was misreading it as ff16 lol. Was getting my hopes up after the great reviews the new game had.
Yoshi-P hinted that it's in the works, and my guess is we'd get the 'royal' treatment with DLC packed in. If so, that's the nail in the coffin for the PS5 and it's getting sold. Thinking back now, it was a pretty poor investment just to play Demon's Souls and FF7R. RIP me.

I will say this deal most likely owes a TON of credit to Yoshida now that he's the head of Final Fantasy. He's the only reason they're still in business, which garners a lot of respect (and voting power) so it's awesome to see him at the helm finally. Really looking forward to more news on this, and hopefully an extended hand to Star Ocean II R which I'd gladly take as well.

*Crosses fingers* they can manage to find the source code.

Would love for the 360 stuff to come back. Still have 1 achievement left in War for Cybertron, clearing 15 waves of Escalation (the horde mode). Can be done solo, takes about 5 hours. Was about 3 hours into a session one afternoon when I accidentally hit a wall going from the ammo station back to the safe perch and got shoved outside the level. Couldn't get back inside, and while I could shoot some enemies when they spawned outside with me, once they got inside the level, I was stuck. Was so angry at the time wasted, I shut the game down and by the time I went back to try again, that mode had been disabled.

Still have a lot of multiplayer to do in 360 Fall of Cybertron, which was discontinued, and never started the XB1 port, which also had all the multiplayer shut down.

Really calls into question the competency of some of these teams. The main focus of my career has been managing source code systems and building software, so it always irks me when a company says they can't find or lost something. It's not out of the realm of possibility, but there should be backups of backups, either readily accessible or handed off to an escrow company for safe keeping. Reminds me back when Epic introduced Guardian to Gears 3. They said they had to tweak the Capture the Leader mode because they lost the Guardian code from Gears 2. I didn't believe it for one second and figured they told a quick lie that most people on their forums would believe. But I'm sure Epic wouldn't be able to get away with that if they were involved in patent litigation over some aspect of the Unreal Engine.

I watched Rise of the Beasts the other night. Probably not the worst Transformers movie, though it's been a while since I've watched any of the other live action movies. (The G1 movie, though? Couple months ago.)

Didn't care for Prime's characterization in the movie, toward humans and the priority given to using the key to return to Cybertron. Just didn't jive with what Prime is supposed to be.

The final battle had something that bothered me. You had Prime, Arcee, Wheeljack, Primal, Cheetor and Rhinox fighting Battletrap, Nightbird and a bunch of Terrorcons, with Mirage trying to distract Scourge. The Autobots and Maximals are outnumbered, but Prime is still able to break away to confront Scourge. Not the only movie that's pulled a stunt like that, but still pulls you out of the experience when you notice it.

Had heard Pete Davidson ad-libbed a line that was nearly cut. Could easily tell what it was - great line.

Nice touch incorporating Unicron's theme from the '86 movie into the opening when Unicron appeared.

Transformers One is a new animated movie coming next year, set on Cybertron. So no humans. Hasn't been made clear yet which continuity it will be a part of. Haven't watched the Netflix series yet.

The I hated how Optimus Prime was portrayed too. It was extremely out of character for him to be like that. He could have been distrustful without being an ass.
The Netflix series was horrible. I wish I had never watched it. Rise of the Beasts treated the Beast Wars characters better than the Netflix show.

I "purchased" the FF14 Starter Edition at some point when it was free on PlayStation. Apparently, that makes me ineligible to use the trial version as purchasing any version of the game or an expansion kills access to the trial and requires a subscription. I never played it so I never linked my PSN ID to my Square FF14 account. I might finally check it out when the Xbox trial version comes out.
The Starter Edition does include a 30 day trial if you wanted to take it for a spin though.

Even if they lost the source code the executables still exist. They should be able to reverse engineer the games from the binaries if need be. They have the resources.

Might not be the games but the server side code for multiplayer. Don't know if MS would want to add a bunch of games to Game Pass with no online functionality, and a bunch of busted achievements because of it. MS doesn't have a perfect track record with first party achievements on Game Pass, but to my knowledge most things are working compared to the state of the Transformers games. Would be a different story if the BC Halo games were on Game Pass.

Losing the source code happens more often than you might think even to big name titles. Final Fantasy 8 and Kingdom Hearts comes to mind. I think it was on GDC where someone gave a presentation about the importance of archiving. It was quite detailed and nerdy stuff. The making of Command and Conquer Remaster was also quite interesting as finding the source code for that game became a passionte obsession. Don't remember if I watched it in game or on youtube but was worth a watch.

Speaking of Final Fantasy, do you love FF14 as much as this guy? Not surprising that one month after Square Enix CEO gets fired that we see FF on Xbox. Let's goooo!

Congratulate me!  I just beat Letter Quest: Grimm's Journey Remastered's story mode.  Dark Souls it ain't, but at least I can say that I finished a game this year!  :oldman:

I’ve been playing a bit of Disney Speedstorm since it’s free to play this weekend. Except for the rubberbanding, the gameplay is really good but the loot boxes and battle pass turn me off from it being a great game. I wasn’t surprised how pervasive the micro transactions would be when I saw it was made by a mobile game developer. All they had to do was make it as a Mario Kart clone and it would be a definite buy.

Speaking of cartoon adaptations, has anyone else watched the new My Adventures with Superman? That show is so freaking wholesome and utterly delightful.
After years of the dark, brooding, edge-lord garbage that is the Snyderverse, it's so nice to go back to the gee-whiz, shucks, Kansas Clark with purity and bright colors. It still has action and mystery and an overarching storyline to tie the whole series together so don't fret, it's just nice that both sides of the character are dependably original Clark/Superman. No need to deconstruct the character or give him a dark secret or past or a discouraging Pa Kent anything like that. It's the kind of comic book superhero show we need right now.

It reminds me of the back-to-basic take on Spiderman a few years ago - Spectacular Spiderman. THAT was a great adaptation; well written, animated, designed, and organized. It's a shame it was canceled after two seasons because of Disney buying Marvel and wanting to start fresh with their own show. Hot take: the Ultimate Spiderman show was meh. Spectacular was superior.

Anyone else watching Twisted Metal on Peacock? I’m three episodes in and I’m digging it. Anthony Mackie is fantastic in it, and I love the level of dumb fun it is.

Yep, I'm loving the new Superman show.

I don't see that as a hot take - Spectacular Spider-Man was easily the best animated Spider-Man since the 90s show (Not counting the Spider-Verse movies of course).

Took a small break from Diablo for the Wo Long DLC.  It's not easy and it seems they want you to play the game again on a NG+ mode they added to be geared enough for it.  I'll have to be annoyed with the last 2 side missions for now.

I started Bramble. I kept reading about how dark the game is, and after the first couple of levels I thought maybe the "dark" was just the weird Swedish mythology setting and the fact that it was about children.

Then holy crap... my 8 year old protagonist got broken in half by a bear trap, waded waist deep in bloody offal, chopped in half by a meat cleaver, and picked up by his head and popped like a zit. I also sacrificed a gnome toddler to get away from... well, basically a graboid who moved under a sea of intestines.

Shizz is intense.

Animated Disney has never been less relevant.

Their catalogue only remains very relevant because of their Lucasfilms, Marvel Studios, and 20th Century FOX acquisitions.  Like, one brand of American animation isn't available in Australia on disc, well so what??  Most people won't care.

The US doesn't even recognize the greatness of foreign animation when it comes to The Oscars.

also, name your favorite Disney animated feature film of the last five years.

The last good one was Wreck It Ralph, which came out in…. 2012 was five years ago right?

Disney and their many subsidiaries add up to more than just Disney/Marvel/Lucas/Fox, and just those 4 alone are pretty massive. Disney was one of the first to bail on HD DVD and start, or maybe finalize, the death spiral.
Why would any consumer want Physical Media to die?
Whoops

The CAG twitter feed on the front page hasn't updated in a couple weeks. I deleted my cache and sighed out and back in to no avail. Any suggestions?

Interesting article: The real reason for Activision Blizzard takeover, XBox losing this generation, PS6 is doomed.

The PS6 is doomed and Sony knows it - Reader’s Feature (msn.com)
My alternate opinion, streaming is not the future and the PS6 will be fine. Frankly, streaming is still hot trash. I have no cap fiber internet that’s 1 up and 1 down and it’s still unplayable. I can’t imagine if I was running on lower internet. I only play games that are downloaded and installed. Internet speeds and connectivity are still going to hold it back for a long time.

I’ve been playing a lot of Diablo 4 on my Xbox Series X and PS5, and my characters have died from server lag. That’s with the game installed on the SSD and just connecting to the server. I can’t imagine trying to stream the game on top of connecting in.

Did crapgamer write this article?

Sony and MS have different goals right now. Sony is focused on selling hardware and full priced software. Microsoft is focused on selling Game Pass subscriptions. It's impossible to predict what the market will look like in 10 years. Right now there's no reason to think Sony is doomed.

The bottom line is people whom think that streaming is the entire future don't have capable 4K HDR setups. If they did they'd know how those discs blow everything else out of the water.

But I'm never surprised anymore that most folks have no appreciation / recognition for visual fidelity. I see and hear it with my friends and peers every single week. Half of them have current gen systems which they can't even fully utilize with their outdated or budget displays. They should have skipped a console cycle and bought a new TV instead.

If you can't do 4K60fps with HDR then there is no point in even buying a current system. Load times, that's it.

People keep buying new consoles and yet they are living in the past. This is been the current gen TV standard (for lack of a better descriptor) since 2016. That's how behind the times they are. Buy thousands of dollars in dumb shit every year but can't even get a decent TV. $200 headsets that cost $4 to manufacture, $200 air pods, new $1000 phone every 2yrs, thousands in anime, toys, CCGs, or beer. All while high-end sets have never been more affordable. A device which you use for HOURS a day and makes all of your content look incredibly better, including streaming and upscaling.

Ehh. Just wait.

When the PSP Go came out, everybody laughed at Sony and said no one would ever buy a system that could not play physical games, especially a portable one. People laughed at the Xbox One S that did not have a disk drive for the same reason. Now there are a ton of people that only buy digital games on the Switch and the Series S has been very successful. There are ton of games that only get digital releases, and eventually there will be games that are only released on subscription services and not available for individual purchase much like a ton of movies and shows on streaming services. Must of Netflix's most well-known shows are not available on Apple TV or Vudu for purchase, or even get DVD releases. They really want to lock people into the ecosystem.

I don't think streaming will replace physical media, but it's part of the future, just like digital downloads and sales have become part of the present. Especially as the cost of printing and distributing physical media goes up.

As far as people living in the past without solid 4K setups, don't underestimate how little the average person does not know or care the difference. For CAGs sake, standard definition DVDs are still manufactured and sold at staggering numbers.

Movies/TV is such a bad comparison though. Movies can preload as you watch because it has no inputs from the user. It’s just laughable to think that PS6 won’t sell because people would say “Nah, I don’t want to play Sonys amazing high quality games downloaded or on a disc because I only want to play always online games with extreme lag that use up my bandwidth cap.”

Honestly, if Microsoft made a Gamepass tier that didn’t include streaming for a cheaper price, they know 99% of users would opt for it. That’s why they have to bundle it and force it on us.

As it is, I only do Gamepass Ultimate because of the gold conversion. I’m locked in til 2026, but I’ll probably move to the lowest tier once mine expires next time. I typically play the crap out of one game (Diablo 4 right now) and don’t really need access to the 200 indie games.

It took a while but there are next gen exclusive games now, at bare minimum.

Not to mention 4K/HDR is not a high bar anymore. Obviously not the best quality, but even budget $250-300 TVs can do 4k and HDR now. 60 FPS isn't even a factor, all TVs do that, the real bar is if there is 120+ FPS support or things like VRR.

Perhaps I missed a prior discussion on this, but I just got an email saying no more Games with Gold after August?  Game Pass is great and all, but that's really a shame.
