Xbox One - General Discussion Thread

Did I say it was ok? It just is what it is at this point. More people own cellphones than Xboxs. There are cameras and satellite video being taken of is out in the open everyday. Anyone with nothing to hide shouldn't care at all.
Dumbest comment people say. If you have nothing to hide you shouldn't care? Oh I'm sorry you have nothing to hide therefore you shouldn't care if China records your conversations. This isn't used for law enforcement as your statement seems to imply. A good example is:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/11/26/nsa-porn-muslims_n_4346128.html

Clearly that's the US targeting non-citizens as they have no rights but I guess people in other countries shouldn't worry because "they're doing nothing wrong" and you shouldn't worry because you're "doing nothing wrong" in any country outside of the US?

Character assassination because you aren't liked has absolutely NOTHING to do with "doing something wrong".

Well this is going an a different direction. I'm merely saying people shouldn't say "ohhhh I can't buy an xbox now cause NSA will know things about me and spy on me." It's rampant everywhere.

And I'm not saying it's right. I just don't know why people stress about it. There's nothing you can do unless you want to basically remove yourself from the grid. I'm not going to waste my time thinking about it, I live my life and enjoy the benefits of technology, the good with the bad.

Well my original point was that this is going to hurt their competitiveness overseas and I honestly think it will.

Really? It was simple for me but ok.
Ok, I guess it wouldn't be that hard now that I think about it. I would only have to tell my receiver to stay on the same input as my XBOX ONE when I change activities. However, then the remote would not control the ONE also. I would just switch between applications on the remote. Not a big deal. I'll eventually try again, but the picture quality was just not as crisp either.

Nope your remote can control the one too. Harmony had it up on their site the day Xbox One came out. I just added Xbox One to my devices, and tweaked my ps3 activity to Xbox one and it worked like a charm.

Just curious, how did you set up your remote? Do you just have two activities such as Play XBOX and Play TV and just use the Play TV? I know if I do Play XBOX and I have my TV hooked up through it, the MENU button and a few others would apply to XBOX functions. I don't really like the voice control yet.

Xbox One has sold -- not just shipped, but actually sold -- over 2 million units in under 3 weeks.

Not to flame another consolewarz round, but for all the people who gave us months of "it's going to bomb" doomsday threads -- well, put that in your holiday stocking and stuff it. lol. ;)

http://majornelson.com/2013/12/11/xbox-one-sells-2-million-units-in-18-days/

  • 2 Million Consoles sold through in 13-markets in the first 18-days
  • Over 83 million hours in games, TV, and apps on Xbox One since the system launched
  • 39 million Xbox One achievements unlocked
  • 595 million total Gamerscore achieved on Xbox One
  • At peak demand, customers were ordering the Xbox One console at over 1000 units per minute on Amazon.com

I kept Watch TV on my remote, even though if I hit that right now it wouldn't work. I left it on in case I ever rigged my cable box like it was before. You could take it off the command list if you wanted to.

Right now I have 4 "functions" on my Harnony remote. Play Xbox 360, Play Wii, Start Xbox One, and Watch TV, which is in effect, not usable.

My wife actually loves the voice controls and has adapted very quickly to TV running through the Xbox One. But I updated the harmony remote to control the One so we don't have to use voice if we don't want to. The Harmony controls the cable box the same.

Hope that sheds some light.

I think there were far more people who "wanted" it to bomb as opposed to those who actually expected it to bomb. While I still believe that Microsoft has been making quite a few blunders, I had expected the initial sales between the two systems to be roughly even throughout the beginning of next year. The only thing that's taken me by surprise was how strong both systems have been selling. I was anticipating less demand for these new expensive systems out of the gate. It could be evidence of the economy finally starting to turn around, or it could just be the market starved for a new technology upgrade. (what with the unusually large gap between iterations)

The 4+ million next-gen consoles sold so soon after launch is going to be a big plus for the industry in general. It gives studios interested in releasing games for these new systems a lot more confidence in finding an audience and garnering solid sales. It also gives the general populace a rosier view of the health of the industry, which will help inspire venture capitalists to invest in video game companies again.

While it might be a controversial move, I'm pleased that Microsoft has dropped the required demo rule from XBLA. Leaving the demo option up to developers will help to make XBLA a more attractive outlet for smaller self-publishing developers. There are a few more policies that they need to address, but progress is being made.

It's a marathon, not a sprint.  The Wii U also managed a hearty 3 million in its first month of release and then the sales dropped off for it.  It's still too soon to tell what the future landscape will look for all 3 consoles at this point.

I don't recall that many people calling the Xbox One to bomb. That was back when the DRM fiasco was being received by the gaming community during E3. Since MS changed their stance and went back to the way things were, people were just saying the PS4 was going to do better. Those numbers only validate what most of us were saying. If anything that gap is bigger than I had thought.

Remember that Sony was only released in the North American market for the first two weeks with sell in figures of over 2M units. While MS sold approximately the same amount of units through a worldwide release. Sony is doing a staggered worldwide release so the numbers for the other territories have yet to come in. It's over simplifying, but Sony and MS have sold the same amount of units with Sony needing mainly one region with MS needing every region. The gap will widen with Sony's worldwide appeal.

The biggest battle for Sony is stateside and the numbers are in their favor. I'm interested in seeing how Titanfall fares in the Spring as I anticipate MS to catch up some once that game releases.

Yours is literally the only take I've read online, anywhere, that has interpreted these numbers that way. Articles on CNBC (like this one: http://www.cnbc.com/id/101265164?__source=yahoo%7Cfinance%7Cheadline%7Cheadline%7Cstory&par=yahoo&doc=101265164%7CXbox%20One%20vs.%20PlayStation

plus Forbes and elsewhere that predicted a decisive Sony lead even in this early going are expressing surprise over how well MS has done. Even the pro-Sony crowd at Neogaf is having a collective seizure over the numbers.

Either way, it might be unimpressive to you, but it's good news for MS. Took the 360 5 months to move 2 million units. They've done it in under 3 weeks this time.

Yeah. In the first two weeks of each console release, PS4 sod about 100,000 units more than Xbox One. Both consoles look to have very bright futures.

Yes, they are indeed impressive numbers. But there's nothing to misinterpret. I never said the Xbone would bomb. Both companies will be fine in the long run. Again, my prediction like others said was that Sony was going to do better. The numbers merely back that up. All of the recent articles are concentrating solely on units sold. If MS would disclose their NA units, it would be less than 2M. While Sony hit 2M in NA. That would be a more fair comparison which was easy to pick out the minute the reports came out.

Does it really matter to us who does better? All I care about is they do care and we as gamers keep getting great products it's not like we get anything from sales in money.

Well it can, yeah. Things have evened out a little more now, but for a long time if you were buying a multiplayer-focused game you wanted the Xbox 360 version because most multiplayer communities were bigger and longer-lasting on that console.

For singleplayer games, yeah, who cares. But for multiplayer games, it matters whether you're playing on the console that's more popular than the other one, or not.

To a certain degree, yes it does matter. Retail performance and the resulting install base is one of the biggest factors in determining developer support. And at the end of the day, developer support is the real "currency" of the video game industry. It helps to define the perceived "value" of a hardware platform. This is part of the reason why the PS2 is still so highly regarded. In terms of its hardware, the PS2 was actually kind of crap. But it's software library, and its exclusive software library in particular, stands head and shoulders above anything before or since. It is one of the most successful game consoles of all time because of the developer support it received.

For my part, everything is going exactly as I would want it to. I could stand to see Nintendo pick up the pace with the Wii U, but I'm at least getting the kind of software I want for that system now. As a multi-platform adopter, I want a nice even balance between the various platform holders. This will keep competition high, and consumer prices low. The fact that the XBox One and PS4s' competition is off to such a relatively even start is very much in my best interests.

TLDR: The console that does best has 3rd part games developed for it and the other console gets shitty ports.

Not bad at all. Not 1 million in 24 hours but not bad.
Gather around all. that's what we call a backhanded compliment everyone. Gawd man let it go.

With the similarity of the hardware and policies I don't think you're actually going to have a they develop the game for this platform and then port it over to the other process this generation. They're pretty much identical developing kits now. Developers on the Playstation platform don't have to tangle with the cell processor any more so in theory there shouldn't be any delays. Multiplatform games are ever more present now too (the industry has learned they make more money with a larger audience).

My prediction was that Xbone sales had been dealt a deathblow by the $100 price difference. Pleasantly surprised it's actually done so well. Shows what I know.

I've always said I thought the x1 and ps4 would be neck and neck in North America. The Xbox brand is too strong with tweens, teens, the cod and sports game crowds etc for $100 (which isn't a lot if money to most 18-35 year olds as that's the demo with the least responsibilities and most disposable income) to wipe out the big lead they had in this market this last generation. The price and bad pr will hurt the a be narrow their lead here vs last gen, but it won't doom them to a distant second place like some thought.

Eehhh yeah, I don't think you were the only one thinking that before release. It's great both consoles are selling well, that means once the top notch games come out, there will be even more demand for these suckers.

How do you tell that the update went through? It was going through the motions the other day, and it works fine now, but I never got any notice that I'm updated.

welcome to getting a system at launch what you suspect a issue free launch? calm down
Launch was actually 23 days ago, it's a joke there are still issues with Xbox Live. Sorry to sound upset but I can't act calm when I go out and spend $500 plus games, go home to relax and find my new system doesn't work.

Either way I looked on the forums and saw this is an issue with Xbox Live not my specific console, so as I was saying Microsoft needs to get there crap in order.

Here's a link to the Forums with people having the EXACT same issue. It appears it may be related to the new update they launched.

http://forums.xbox.com/xbox_forums/xbox_support/xbox_one_support/f/4267/t/1645749.aspx

well thankfully my 360 and x1 updated fine. im sure ms will be fixing it soon. before this the launch of x1 went pretty well ps4 had alot of issues couple weeks after launch andstill does. It's just the risk you take buying a electronic item at launch.

To be fair 23 days later isn't really "Launch" kind of expected the kinks to be figured out by now. Guess  I'll just play something else for now, I just wanted to game tonight..

If you keep your Xbox in a low power state, meaning you can say Xbox On, then you should get the update automatically
Had my 360 off the other day and there was a pulsating green light. I was like huh wonder what that is? Turned the system on and it's like hey you've got an update! Lol, nice.

I have an old sub HD comcast box that only supports Video Out, and Coaxial. I'm guessing not but does anyone know there's a cable I can buy to convert either to HDMI.

If you are still paying for cable there's no reason you can't bring your box in and swap it for a new one with HDMI free of charge.

Thank you! That's what I saw from some Comcast Threads when I Googled it going to call later and ask. Loving the X1 so far, the UI is fast and slick and Forza 5 is a freaking TON of fun.
