Yep, The Great Delay of 2009 Will Be 2010

kingkiller33

CAGiversary!
While 2009 has offered a good batch of quality games, the number of games this year is pathetic compared to 2008 and previous years. In November, we only have 4 major releases and this is supposed to be the busiest month of the year!!

Game publishers were so afraid of MW2 that they pushed their release dates to early 2010. Now, 2010 looked to be ridiculously crowded with these titles:

Singularity
Darksiders
Mag
Splinter Cell Conviction
Red Dead Redemption
Mafia 2
Bioshock 2
Aliens vs Predator
GT4
Mass Effect 2

Just to name a few. A quick check on the release date, and sure enough, the publishers have decided to delay the games even further to avoid a crowded early 2010. When will this damn madness stop? Mafia 2 and Red Dead Redemption now pushed to May 2010. Splinter Cell, sumer 2010. I'm sure we are going to see other titles push their titles onward to Holiday 2010, and we'll have to keep waiting and waiting.

I'm looking forward to Max Payne 3 more than any of those.
Well, maybe not ME2, but close.

I think 2009 has been a hell of a year, and 2010 will be just as good, and possibly better with some more games that are unannounced.

I doubt MW2 really is the cause of all the delays. If it was Ubisoft will be delaying Assassin's Creed just like Splinter Cell. All this is the result of game developers being cry babies when bosses give them deadlines and there is money trouble. They really need to look at movie industry and learn how to deal with problems. Good movie directors and producers always find ways to make the movie work when they need to cut shooting days and money runs out.

It is, no doubt about it. I'm sure it's not 100% the reason, but think..."Am I going to release my game when the sequel of one of the best selling games, and basically, most popular online game on consoles is coming out? No, I'll polish my game up more and release it when there's a drought of games, and when the MWF2 hype dies down a bit!"

See what I mean? It's a win:win for them. Make their game better and at a more convenient time. Don't underestimate MFW2. I'm no fan boy for it myself, but it's common sense the hype it has for all platforms.

Publishers are getting smarter with their release dates. November of last year was brutal for several games that were expected to become successful franchises. In that year Gears 2 and Fallout 3 made all the money.

2009 has been a ridiculously good year for games and there is still more to come in the remaining months.

I second that Max Payne 3 comment. Not a single on of those games I'll buy on release ... Max Payne however I just might

How many of those games were actually going to be ready for Q4 2009 in the first place though? Development is very opaque, its hard to say. Delays happen all the time, it doesnt mean they're scared of Modern Warfare 2.

Several of these developers have gone on record stating that their game is finished, but they don't want to release it yet. SIngularity was specifically delayed not to compete against Modern Warfare 2.

Yes, delays happen all the time, but I've never seen it on this scale. This was supposed to be a killer holiday season with games like Bioshock 2, aliens vs predator, max payne 3, mass effect 2. I know a lot of people don't care because they are so excited for MW2, but there are gamers like me that don't give a shit about multiplayer and don't care for the franchise. So we really lose out.

BTW, the earliest release date for Max Payne 3 is June 2010! Excited for Heavy Rain? It's release date is Dec. 2011!

This isn't 1990. There are always way too many great games to play and not enough time to play them all. Delays don't bother me at all.

Of course, I'm upset that some games I've been looking forward to have been delayed until 2010, but at the same time, this holiday season will be a bit less crowded/overwhelming than usual. Spreading out release dates over the course of the year as opposed to having the usual summer "droughts" and holiday glut is a good thing.

Srsly? Darksiders of all things got pushed back? I was really expecting that to be the one game that would be Discount Bin'd by February and it got pushed back?

Ugh, well, I'm sure it will be in the GS Gamedays sale this Summer.

I'm actually looking forward to all of those games with the exception of Mag and GT4. Never even heard of Mag till now and I'm not a great fan of racing games that are realistic.
Really? You really think that?
Well yeah when you have games like Uncharted 2 and Demon's Souls that make people want to get a PS3. It's the first year where PS3 actually has a good choice of good games to compete with the 360.

This year the PS3 exclusives are better than the Xbox exclusives and it will be remembered for it because now is when the PS3 starts overtaking the Xbox in terms of sales because of the price drop and the games.

And of course MW2 will be one of the biggest selling games...ever. So yeah I think he was pretty much right.

Anyway I don't care that some games got pushed back because of all the great games that didn't. Uncharted 2, Forza 3, Demon's Souls, Left 4 Dead 2, Borderlands, MW2, Ratchet & Clank, Assassins Creed 2, Dragon Age...Mario Wii...

That's plenty for me anyway.

Yup.

The hype over MW2 is getting as retarded as the people that play CoD wow... Scared of MW2? Pleazzzzzzzzzz don't flatter yourself.

Anyway, fuck summber of 2010 for Splinter Cell Conviction? I thought it was Feb. 2010?
Alien Vs Predator. Going to be a hella bunch of fun! So excited.
Yeah, man!

Been looking forward to a new AvP game forever!

How is having too much of a good thing considered bad? No once forces you to buy them all. You can just as easily continue with your one game a month plan and ignore all the other releases.

Personally, I look forward to the holiday glut. I love buy tons of titles this time of year even though I rarely have time for most of them. I still haven't touched Fable 2, Gears, Left for Dead, Mirror's Edge or Far Cry 2 from last year, but that didn't stop me from buying and wanting.

Even though I have plenty of backlog, it still depresses me that another COD game is the only big thing this season.
How is having too much of a good thing considered bad?
Because...
There are always way too many great games to play and not enough time to play them all.
What I was trying to say was that I don't mind delays because I already can't play everything I want to play which is why I'm in the middle of 20 games all the time. If a game is delayed then I have some time to catch up which will never happen but at least it can feel like it a little...

EDIT: Also, what I meant by "it's not 1990" was that there are so many great games coming out nowadays compared to 20 years ago so a delay doesn't mean there is nothing to play. God, the waits for Adventure of Link and Super Mario Bros. 3 were unbearable. All I had was my copy of Nintendo Fun Club News for info - that was it! No internet, no previews, no demos, no highly publicized trade shows - nothing!!!

Is it just me, but doesn't this happen every year? A couple years back, wasn't GTA4 suppose to release at Christmas, and got pushed back, to the groans of everyone? This time of year, this is what the focus is on. Let the big games hit, and no one is going to be wanting for games to play in December.

I personally don't care one way or the other when games come out, since I wait on 95% of them for price drops to $20. So, I'd rather have the game nice and polished, then released, and I'll buy it when it's priced right.

kingkiller though, your nuts if you bought all those games at full price if you haven't touched them yet? Why not at least wait until you get an incredible deal on buying them? Backlogs are one thing (I am guilty of that), but why buy right away if you aren't paying right away?

Delays are nothing new, but this year has seen more than normal. I think it's mostly due to the recession. Companies are delaying their bigger hits so that when they come out, maybe they can get people outside the hardcore niche to buy them at full price. They know people will wait til it drops to 20, they're just seeing how long we'll wait.

I know that it sucks because most of those games were on my Christmas list and now I will probably be asking for preorder reciepts/gift cards instead of games.

Oh yeah, wasn't Alpha Protocol pushed back, too? I really wanted that game.

Cool story, bro.

Anyways, I don't think it's from the presence of MW2 alone, there's also a ton of other games coming out, but developers would be idiots if they didn't take MW2's hype into consideration. It's bad.

Splinter Cell has no definite release date, no one knows yet.

Was suppose to come out about two weeks ago or so I think. Though it was confirmed by retailers as being delayed to Spring, Sega didn't say anything until day after it was suppose to come out that it's been delayed.

Yep, combined with having little free time, I couldn't care less about delays.

I'll only play a fraction of the games that interest me anyway, so I don't care when something gets delayed. Tons of other good games I can get around to picking up and playing.

Haven't bought a new game this year actually--just got a couple (2 or 3) off Goozex. In the middle of Prince of Persia, haven't touched Fallout 3 since I don't have time for an RPG right now (maybe next summer I'll get around to it).

Though I will be getting MW2 for my B-day next month.

Aww, that's sad. I was hoping that it would be out sooner. Oh well, maybe I'll still get it when it comes out if I'm not still busy with BioShock 2.

I heard they are going to announce it by projecting the release date on the side of a building or something. Also I was told not to worry - it won't pull you out of the experience of commuting to work or whatever you might be doing at the time.

Yeah, I am a bit crazy for going hog wild with the buying during holiday season especially since these games drop in value so fast, but I get caught up in all the excitement with the AAA titles. However, I did get most of those games through Gamestop's B2G1 free sales.

If I had more discipline, I would stay a year behind the releases, and save a bundle. I paid $64 dollars for Asassin's Creed in 2007, and I just took the wrapper off and started playing it two weeks ago. lol

I would care less if these games didn't get so much pre release hype. I was really pumped for Bioshock 2, and then it got delayed. I couldn't believe it.

Also, holiday season is the best time for gaming, IMO. It gets dark early, cold, more time off with holidays, and stores hold big sales. We won't get that in Feb or March.

Hype doesn't really factor in for me. This is the only gaming site I visit--and it's the off topic and vs. forums that keep me checking as regularly as I do.

Time off doesn't help me much, even being an academic. Holidays just still filled with work from trying to get caught up on research and writing that gets put off during the semester--along with all the family stuff during the holidays.

Summer is when I can catch up on some gaming, since it's a 3 month break from teaching rather than 1 month. Still work a ton, but have more time to get some gaming and other hobbies in relative to the holidays.

Store sales I also don't care about anymore since I rely pretty much 100% on Goozex and gifts for getting games these days.

So yeah, delays don't really affect me in any way, but I see how they suck for the more hard core gamers lookign forward to doing nothing but playing games over the holidays etc.

May is wayyyy too long to wait.

I'll just hope to pick it up on Clearance, I guess. I was hoping it would be able to tide me over and give me an RPG fix while I wait for ME2, but that won't be happening.

Recent Christmas seasons have been brutal for many developers. Top rated games simply didn't sell, despite heavy promotion. Why? There were too many games, and a few high profile titles pushed them to the sides. The OP is right that this year MW2 is part of the problem, but not the entire issue.

Publishers are simply tired of cannibalizing their own sales. That is why you see more AAA titles released during the summer now as they try to space out releases (remember Infamous, Ghostbusters, and Prototype this summer?). Many have taken to not announcing hard release dates for their titles hoping to see who else might make the holiday rush. If 6 other AAA titles are releasing in November, maybe you'll wait for the post-Christmas market in early January, or else push back till March. Most people buy at most 2-3 games a month. I would say most buy 1 or less a month.

There's also the fact that game development is much, much more involved now than 20 years ago.

I was upset when Splinter Cell got pushed but am happy about it now since Borderlands, Uncharted 2, MW2 and ACII all hit the end of this year.

Killer, I use to be kind of like you, in getting all hyped up. But, you basically are a year behind right now, all you need to do is not buy. What helped me was not getting too preocupied in the 'preview' stage of games (a couple I do, but for the most part, I try not to learn much about a game before it's released). That does 2 things. First off, your not nearly as pissed about things that get the last second ax. Secondly, waiting the 6-12 months for it to drop doesn't seem that bad, since your use to waiting now.

You will also learn quickly, something may seem like the greatest thing ever for a week in the forums, but then most of those players go on to the next thing.

Heh, sounds like me ~8 years ago. I used to buy every AAA game that was released, regardless if I was interested in it or even liked the genre. I'd get so caught up in the hype I just had to have them all, most of which I never did anything with besides take off the shrink wrap.

Nowadays I don't do nearly as much buying, though I could still use more discipline. I try to limit myself to the odd game here or there unless there are big savings like a buy 2 get 1 free sale.

the only game on that list i want is red dead redemption. ill pick up bioshock 2 later especially if its a dlc game because of the goty edition that will surely be made.

Not trying to be an ass but it's "pique". I agree about Mass Effect 2 but I don't know enough about MAG other than it's an MMO shooter which doesn't sound too appealing. I'm looking forward to Bioshock 2 though.
the only game on that list i want is red dead redemption. ill pick up bioshock 2 later especially if its a dlc game because of the goty edition that will surely be made.
Have they talked about dlc for it? And I'm not sure that they'd make a GOTY of it. ME I expect a GOTY edition of, though.

More time to polish the game doesn't always mean end product will be better. In fact they can ruin the game. Just like how painters can ruin their work just trying to add one more element when it is already finished.

I want loads of games that are out next year now -Halo Reach, Mass effect 2, Alan wake, Bioshock 2, Splinter Cell conviction and about 8 others

The only one I can think of off the top of my head is The Last Guardian. Direct sequels aren't very impressive to me as far as hype goes, save for the completely overhauled UC2.

I've been burnt out by the likes of Tomb Raider and Prince of Persia, among others.

I've been addicted to FO3, nothing else matters atm. In-fact, I have not played it today. Urge to play.... Rising.
smile

The only games on that list I was looking forward to were Darksiders and Red Dead Redemption. However, Darksiders was probably going to be a sub $30 purchase for me, while RDR was probably going to be an immediate buy.

The only other game I was really looking forward to, which also got pushed back, was God Of War III.

Otherwise, everything else I had some excitement about(I Am Alive, Highlander) has either been pretty much dead in the water or completely cancelled already.

Assassins creed 2, Resident evil darkside chronicles, New super mario brothers wii, God of war collection, Dragon age Origins, COD MW2, Left 4 dead 2, Jak and daxter (to some degrees..)

I count 8 major releases...Don't see your 4.
