FFXI is VERY group dependent. If you don't want to have to try to find random people to play with or already know people going into it, you're not going to get very far.
I know what it's like. Hell, I've probably spent close to a full month play time on it. I started with the NA PS2 release and played on and off for about 2 years on PS2. Now all I have is a PSTwo, so I would play on PC if I did do so, but I don't want to start a new with noone at my level. It would take me 65,000 hours to find a PT at low levels, meaning it would take me three times as long to actually get into the story and/or fun parts.
I'll take that as a no, and I'm not playing WoW.
I played XI for a month and WoW for a few months. World of Warcraft is nice because its more than do-able to solo the entire time. Sure grouping adds a lot of stuff but it doesn't force you to group nearly as much as FFXI.
That's what I love about it. MMORPG's are called that because they are

ing huge worlds and they rely on your ability to work as part of a team. Any MMORPG that you can go thru alone is just an Online RPG, in my opinion. Sure, it makes it easier to go thru it and takes less time, but (more than)half the fun is meeting people from all reaches of the globe and knowing your role(I.E., your strengths and weaknesses, as well as your dependence on others).
