You like playing as chicks?

As one of my friends once put it, if you're going to have to stare at a characters backside for many hours of gameplay, wouldn't you rather it was a female one? Another one of my friends however labeled me as a "RP Transexual" for choosing a female character to play in WoW.

I'm surprised this is so split.

A good lesson for all, that "hot" female avatar in your game of choice is probably a d00d!

Eh, I guess it depends on the game.

If it's Create-A-Character, I usually make a character from both genders. Usually, the C-A-C system favors one gender or the other, so I pick whichever ends up more interesting.

In fighting games, I might favor the female characters a little more, as they are usually faster (and that's the attribute I prefer to have in fighters).

i dont care what sex they are as long as theyre fun to play with. ive been saying it for a while now that the next gta game should have a female lead charater. theres things and missions you could do as a woman you wouldnt want to or couldnt do as a male lead character. the last female character i really enjoyed using though was that chick in streets of rage 1. she was cool and kicked ass and had the best moves in the game.

more peopel woudl use female characters or buy games with female leads if they actually made belivable realistic women characters. no more overly big jiggily tits , no more trampy clothing and give her some real attitude and guts. its pretty tellign that game developers think most gamers will buy anything as long as they have amazing boobie physics in the game which is why the doa fighting game series sucks to me. too much t&a and not enough depth.

its the same thing for movies not all chicks look like models some of the most cool and beautiful ones are avg looking chicks with personality and heart. and it wouldnt hurt if she could break some arms and legs. someday they will make a decent female game character and when that day comes ill pay full price.

I agree with what you said. I also wouldnt mind playing as a female in a GTA game. I just seen this preview of Silent Assassin which looks cool and has a pretty nice female lead character. I hope they make a Bulletwitch 2, but improve gameplay and level designs.

Corporations will do anything that sells.

In the current day, strong, somewhat realistic women characters don't sell games (just look at Beyond Good and Evil)

Back when I played FPSs more, I would always choose the female character model. They were almost half the size of the males, which made a smaller target for opponents to hit.

From those posted links, it seems that's no longer going to be the case, though.

Ummm no Samus Aran remember? A better female role model in video games then Croft will ever be for girls.
Lokizz I'll agree with you on the boobs part but I like seeing the chicks in trampy outfits though I have picked more clothed females as well. For example I once chose a female Force character in PSO.
Oh and Lokizz more have been around. For example see Eriko Christie in "Illbleed", Terra from Final Fantasy 6, Tifa from Final Fantasy 7 though I prefer Aeris.
As for guys playing girl characters, it should be obvious 99.9% of the time chicks never pick the ASTONISHINGLY hot female character. Proof in point a friend of mine, male, picked one of the really girly PSO characters and got hit on all the time apparently. A female Hunter on the hand is less likely since I'm guessing the PSO community already suspected or was use to male's picking females with such an assertive or aggressive sexual look to them.

This is hillarious.
I really pick whoever looks more appealing to me, what they have to offer, etc. If it's a game where you create a character I would make a female character that's totally unrelated to the game just to stand out/be funny.

The things some of you guys are saying are kind of hillarious to me. "I pick females because I don't want to stare at a guy" LOL? That's a bit insecure if you ask me.
Ummm no Samus Aran remember? A better female role model in video games then Croft will ever be for girls.
True, but it has never seemed to me that Samus's gender was a big selling point of Metroid games. I mean, heck, for the first Metroid you didn't even know your character was female until the end, and 99.9% of the time you look like a skinny Master Chief, just look at the covers of the games -

Now compare that to a popular title where the character's gender is acknowledged front and center:

Whoever's the least irritating/whiny/retarded. Unfortunately most of the time this does not narrow things down any.

I alternate with characters for the most benefits.

yeah the ff7 chicks were cool so were the ff8 ones but theyre part of a group not solo so its kind of diff.eh i just get tired of the same old stereotypes in games. look how long it took them to make better minority characters and still alot of them are kinda racistly built. samus is a strong female character like many mentioned but shes pretty much unisex imo because they dont make an issue of her being a chick....damn i mean woman.

if the story is strong i think people will buy it you dont need boobies and sex to sell it. one day someone will break rank and make a decent game with a female lead that you can get into. not just fighting game characters someone who can handle themselves in any situation and still keep it real. hell im still hopeful someday they will make a crow movie with a female lead.

1. Assuming I'm given the choice, I'll play one of each gender in an offline game like KotOR or one of the Elder Scrolls and male-only in any online game - Lilboo and Strell give me enough creepy-guy-on-the-internet dialog to keep me going. If the genders have different attributes, then I'm more likely to choose male, as I'm not too big on the speedy/magic-y thing that you usually get with women in games.

2. If you consider Samus to be a poor example of a strong female character because the developers don't make a big deal about her gender, I really have to wonder what the hell it is that you want.

Speaking for me, it's not that I want anything.

But compare the one example of a "realistic woman" dug up here - Samus - to Ripley from the Alien movies. Samus hardly ever speaks and spends almost all of her time analyzing her surroundings or using her cool tech to fight aliens. With a few slight dialogue changes and char model switch-outs the Samus character could be male or robotic and the game plot would still make sense. In comparison Ripley was a fully developed woman character - a real smart, tough chick with good negotiation skills and motherly instincts. There's no way you could rewrite those movies with a male character in that role. Same goes for Sarah Connor from the Terminator movies.

The best characterization of a lead woman in mainstream, popular videogames that I can think of is Sarah Kerrigan (Starcraft) - and she is turned into a femme fatale less then a quarter of the way through the game. The POP Indian princess is a refreshing update for a woman sidekick and I haven't played the HalfLife games - but from promos it seems there's a somewhat realistic woman in that one as well (although maybe someone can correct me if she's just another damsel in distress). Nevertheless movies have paved the way for a truly fleshed-out female character to emerge (pardon the pun)

What's so insecure about it? You've never picked any character in a video game because you thought he/she looked cool? It's the same thing. I think women look better than men. Has nothing to do with being insecure.

Except for the motherly thing. Infant Metroid. Never forget.
The POP Indian princess is a refreshing update for a woman sidekick...
While I liked her, Farah might not be the best example. Totally helpless and did more harm than good in a fight.

They say a lot of people play as females because they feel feminine to an extent themselves.

On the other hand there are a few who like playing as something completely different from themselves.

Then there's just the pervs who just want to look at the goods.

As for me I'd say I play as girls not because I identify with them, but rather I like characters that are fast. The male characters tend to be heavier, and not my style.

So usually in fighting games I choose the girl. But mostly I choose the character that looks the coolest, if the girl looks cooler I'll choose her.

I always play female characters, always. Sounds strange but, I always care more about female characters than males. (Yuri in Shadow Hearts Covenant is an exception, he was awesome.)

You know Metroid heavily borrows from "Alien" right?

Man ya'll the Baby Metroid. So sad when it died to save Samus. Such a sweeetheart.

Here are some more. What about Karin from SH Covenant? Koudelka in SH at least wasn't exactly weak either.
Oh as for a QUALITY game with a female that's clear said character is a female it's been done already. Look at BG&E. Am I the only one who thought it felt like a video game version of Titan AE(means this as a compliment)?
Basically in Guitar Hero and Rock Band, simply because i have a fetish for chicks and rock music. Though I did make Bad Girl (from No More Heroes) as a vocalist, simply because my friend made Holly Summers as her vocalist. Also I like playing online and using my female character and saying in the most gruff, trucker voice possible "HEY! HOW YOU LITTLE LADIES DOING?!" Usually it goes dead silent afterwards....
Yeah, in RB my guitar character is a Girl. Every time I play GH I play as a girl. So I had to keep it the same and have a girl be my guitar character. Singing and druming are both dudes.

It really depends on the game. Back in the PSO days on the DC I was a female hunter. It was great because I think she was the best all around character class in the game. Sometimes the female character models are a freaking joke and I would never want to stare at something like that for hours. And someone once told me that in Oblivion if you decided to be a girl you lost stat points, but never got anything as a bonus.

If it's a fighting game I'll probably choose female since they seem to be faster and stronger than the male characters. Other than that though I'll always take male.
You know Metroid heavily borrows from "Alien" right?
Metroid II was especially bad for that. Didn't you think those "metamorphosed Metroids" looked a little bit too familiar?

Actually, Return of Samus was especially bad, period.

I'm indifferent. As long as it's a cool character (i.e. not annoying, not a sterotype etc.) I could care less whether it's male, female, animal, alien etc.
If it's a fighting game I'll probably choose female since they seem to be faster and stronger than the male characters. Depends on the type of game. When I'm given a choice in a create a character for a MMO or RPG I look at both male and female characters, see what they look like, what stuff you can change, etc. Fighting games I just use whoever I don't suck with, gender doesn't matter.
Anyone else like playing games where you are a chick, or pick the chick if given the choice of male or female? I like the Tomb Raider games, gave bulletwitch a try, and chose to be a female in Tony Hawk P8. I probably wouldnt have given bulletwitch a try if the lead was a male. Im already thinking of being a chick in Saints Row 2 if given the choice, wanted female agents in crackdown which never happened, and am hoping the TNA knockouts would be in the new TNA game by midway. I also want to give Heavenly Sword a try when i get a PS3. But to sum this all up, i probably enjoy playing as a female more then a male if it suits the game. I couldnt be a female in Gears, or God of War. But i think for the most part id pick a female. Are there any other gamers out there that feel this way?
In most games it doesn't matter to me.

One of the few games where I made the conscious decision to choose female over male is Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force. In that game you play as either Alexander Munro or Alexandria Munro. She seemed like a really cool character and the male Alex Munro was kind of generic IMO. She was an awesome character that was unfortunately nixed in Elite Force II.
2. If you consider Samus to be a poor example of a strong female character because the developers don't make a big deal about her gender, I really have to wonder what the hell it is that you want.
Crotch, you're awesome. If you go around whining or drawing attention to your circumstances and/or that you've done something, then you must NEED to draw attention to something because your accomplishment obviously doesn't speak for itself. If what you've done is worth merit, folks will notice.

This is the sort of thing that ticks me off about the so called feminist movement. I don't need affirmative action or any other artificial advantage to compete with men in the work force. My creditentials, my skills and abilities are what's on the table. Don't give me a job because you need to have X number of Women to make the government happy. Give me the job because I'm the best there is for it. Or give the position to the one who is.
