ZUNE and your X360 - ZUNE HD Now in 64GB - Latest Update Now Supports AVI/XviD

Ok, I've been doing research the whole damn day. So let me get this straight: iPod users get to download TV shows and movies from iTunes and Zune users get to watch...podcasts? WTF is a podcast?! If you don't have a marketplace for video, why make a portable device that plays video?! Podcast- psh! Is that like watching losers' daily lives like on YouTube or something?

*confused and frustrated*

Actually iPod users get podcasts also...thats where the 'pod' in podcast comes from.

So I guess technically the zune users should listen to 'zunecasts'.

Uh, so you guys bought a $200 device to watch people show you how to make Mountain Dew glow while iPod users get to watch A Bug's Life? Nice. I'm really confused as to why people are buying anything else other than an iPod. I'm not getting why a Zune has a big screen when clearly, the marketplace cannot utilize that feature. Why didn't you guys just get a nice mp3 player for $70-80 if you know you wouldn't be able to put the video playback to good use? Are you guys....stupid?

Podcasts ARE Those TV Shows and movies, thrown into bite size lil bits of Audio/video. Most Audio podcasts are kind of like Morning radio show programs (if you listen to the Cagcast on the front page of this site you'd understand) The Video podcasts sometimes feature whole Programs and TV Shows or a condensed version of the show with commentary.

The Marketplace, Just like Itunes isnt free but the download service for the songs is more like a rental...Instead of 99 cents a song...its 14.99 a month or 44.99 for three months for Unlimited downloads. After the month(s) are over the songs are Unplayable until you start up again. however this allows users to be introduced to a wide variety of music during that time. NOTHING IS FREE! The marketplace is an optional Alternative to itunes, all MP3 and videos youv'e downloade Via Limewire or other various programs and sites are all compatible with the Zune software (With excpetion to some video formats)

There will be times where the marketplace offers freebies or free music and downloads (Mostly on certain Indie artists that have signed deals with Zune or Microsoft)

There is also a list of DRM Free songs available on the Marketplace to purchase.

BUT! you still have a choice to buy the songs for 79 MS points a song or buy the whole album.

The Video Marketplace (A feature i havent tried yet) is as I understand where you can purchase MUSIC VIDEO's for at least 100 - 150 MS points a a video. I dont know the restrictions for the Video's you download off the marketplace but I believe that it is licensed. It should be playable on your player, MS Media Player, Xbox 360.

Even with all the Marketplace video restrictions, there is always ways of adding your own video's and movies you downloaded to your PC and converting them to your Zune specs. (If you look at the two previous pages before this one you'll find all you need on the Specs for Video and MP3 as well as certain free of payable conversion software)

Mp3 & Video players are only as good as to what the owner puts into it. make sure when you purchase something like this, that you use it to its full potential.:)

I have over 100 movies that I can and will play (for free) on my Zune, or iPod.

The device isn't limited to what you can 'buy' on the marketplace of either device.

You did know you could do that, right? The Zune has a much better screen than all but two iPods. Why are we stupid for not restricting ourselves to what's online?

Read My previous post

Also, no one's forcing you to buy the Zune. If you dont like it thats your opinion

But the Ipod isnt the ONLY MP3 playing device around and no matter how hyped and popular it is, it certainly isnt The Best device there is. There are other MP3 and portable video players out there that are Ten times better than the Ipod or the Zune. BUT this is the zune thread, therefore...Its all about zune right here.

:applause:

Ok. So, you are saying that if I download, say, Transformers, from Limewire, and convert it to a video format accepted by Zune, then I can watch it on-the-go?

Wait...but isn't that illegal?

You could do the same thing for an iPod, or any other video player. Not that I'd bother with how slow it would be.

Dont ask dont tell :whistle2:$ (we wont)

If your worried about legalities dont do it, but with all the DVD ripping software and everything else...I doubt you'll get in trouble for anything.

There are legitamate ways to rip a movie into your Device, some DVD's offer a Downloadable version of the whole movie's just so you can put it onto a device like this.
Wait...but isn't that illegal?
Same with the ipod...and psp...and ds....and probably any device that can play videos. Why come into this thread and troll?

Technically yes, but lots of people rip their own movies. And lots of us still download bittorents. And even more people think Itunes (and zune marketplace) is the most retarded and assanine reasons to buy either an Ipod or a Zune. Using their software sucks. Using their marketplaces sucks even worse.

Some people don't believe in letting a fat corporations with their lucrative media contacts nickle and dime us to death for media that can be gotten for free.

Besides, point me to a 30GB or better Ipod video I can get brand new for $100 and we'll talk.

Bottom line: Online marketplaces should not be a determining factor in shopping for an mp3 player. Price vs features should.

Well said.

HOT HOT HOT:

The OG Zune A/V pack $30.43 shipped @ Buy.com.

Just pulled the trigger. When you consider the dock goes for $35 by itself, this is a hell of a deal. Going to return the $10 A/V cable I bought at Walmart, and in reality this is a $20 purchase. Now just need to find me a 30GB Zune.

Ive decided not to get the Zune 80

I still love my Black Zune 30, Ive got 11.8 gigs free that I still havent used and it would be a real shame to have something in my pocket that has a bigger hard drive than my computer itself. (where can i find a Laptop hardrive that fits my Laptop? Ive been looking to get one with my holiday cash)

And the Altec lansing Speaker Dock came today from the Woot.com $39.99 deal and I love it even more.

Credit to morrie0 @ FW, BTW. As others have said, I'm pretty sure this won't work on the new ones (the dock connector on the new ones is very close to the front. But, it could be the other way around)

Laptop drives should be standard 2.5" drives. I'm looking for a small one so I can dual-boot Linux and Win XP, but right now I only have 4GB.

It really says something, The Adverts for the zune are always a little on the Odd side and sometimes confusing. But they are also the most Creative and Intuative ive ever seen, The songs used in the ads always make me want to learn more about the artist and the Zune so it works, but these ads arent shown on TV for some reason...Somethings broken with that logic there.

Check em out

Since this seems to be an all-encompassing CAG-zune topic, I must bitch again about the zune software. Why can I not play music on my computer from my device? This is so freaking stupid. I have to click on "collection" and not "device", then find the same damn song in my collection. WHY ZUNE, WHY????

Unfortunately, You are correct

Since it seems that the zune is busy Syncing with the software it leaves no room for it to play music. that is also one of the MANY downsides to the Zune software system.

However Plugging it into your Xbox 360 is simple enough, Just Plug N Play, kinda wish the Zune software was kind of like that.

Oh yeah, no problem. I mean, I've only owned zero MP3 players before. Because naturally, we should all know how these things work (sarcasm). How about the fact that I borrowed my sister's iPod and didn't know how to change the volume or turn it off? You know, not everyone can look at these devices and have a savvy approach to it, especially if you don't care about music (like me). This was to be a gift.

Kinda like I've been training muay thai and MMA for two years. If you're weak lanky ass stepped on the mat with me, I would probably wipe the floor with your dumbass face.

No, it's the 'I'm mad at you, so I'm going to tell you how I can kick your ass when I'll never ever see you' approach you made.

You neglected to mention that you've never used a mp3 player before, something that might have saved you from being looked upon as Corky.

Although it IS 2007, most people who realize you can rip CDs to your mp3 player should have an inkling that doing the same to a DVD would be possible.

What a tiny Gun

Also, on those videos i posted earlier, there is an option on the Zune Arts site for the Video downloads....BUT!!!!! the damned videos need to be converted to fit on the damn zune.....THIS DOESNT MAKE SENSE!!!!! UP IS DOWN!! LEFT IS RIGHT!! STEVE JOBS IS HAVING SEX WITH BILL GATES!!!! THE WORLD IS ON FIRE AND OH MY GOD THAT IS A DISGUSTING AND HORRIFYING MENTAL IMAGE!!!! AUUUUGHGGGGHHHH!!!!
What a tiny Gun
That's exactly what I was thinking, too!

How's that for a double-entendre for you? LOL!

$99 is worth it even for the poo colored one. Just get a case for it. I recommend the Speck ToughSkin. It adds a bit of thickness to the Zune, but as the name suggests, its pretty tough when it comes to absorbing damage, and it comes with a removable plastic screen guard.

ELSPECKZUN-BLK-TS__1.jpg

Now that GCO $10 off $10 is over for non-Buy.com sites, the average price online is about $25 shipped. Theres a used one on ebay for $5.95. It ends in 4 days.

Guy at Wally World was willing (more than willing, actually) to PM the white Zune they had to CompUSA's brown one (that's well out of stock). Unfortunately, I don't think they did an ad here this week, and he didn't have it on hand.

I could try to print out the pic from their website, but I'm not sure he'll take that.

Oh, and I was so close TWICE this week! Seems like I'll never find a Franklin Zune.

OK, got my hands on a Black 30GB for $159.99+tax, then a $30 rebate ($129.99).

I figure that's not bad. I'd probably pay only about $10 less trying to get one from someone on here.
However, Saturday and Sunday, OfficeMax is supposedly going to have the white on sale for $129.99+tax OTD.

Keep the black and wait for the rebate, or get the white with no rebate?
Keep the black, IMO. I've never seen the appeal of white electronics.

Well, I have a black aluminum case on the way from eBay. So the color really isn't important.

That said, damn does the black show fingerprints. Case coming, I know.

I think I'm going to check out the white ones at OfficeMax today, see how I like them. That $30 would pay for at least one textbook. Then again, I might be able to get OD to match the price, with or without rebate. $109 after rebate would be even sweeter.

Still need to figure out a way to use it in the car - with the iPod, I had it velcroed in a high position so I could see the display easily.

I've found that the 320x240 (320x192) 1500kbps setting in Cucusoft works the best for the display. Works pretty well streamed to the 360 as well. If you don't care about HDD space, the 640x480 naturally looks better streamed.

Now I just have to figure out why my computer will hang when running this, even when I've reduced the startup to essential programs.

May fire up the P3 and put it on there so I can still get stuff done on this PC. I'd really like to get cracking on more of these movies converted so I don't even have to touch my regular DVDs anymore. Just the HD DVDs.

Workaround found for "3play" rule for shared songs:

(from engadget): "Apparently, users can simply accept a shared track, go into Windows and switch the genre to "Podcast," and play the tune over as many times as they'd like. Granted, any files which this trick is used for will show up in the Podcast section, but hey, you can't get everything, right?"

Haven't tested this yet, but freaking cool if this works.

just got a zune 80 yesterday and so far im loveing it :) ,now can anyone tell me a easy way i can covert AVI files to mp4?
FYI: Zune.net updated the Zune user's profiles...pretty neat stuff. Also if you go to "Social" you can see the most played Artists, Albums, and Songs...thats's awesome.

Most Played Artist:
Linkin Park(4,013,917 plays)
music030.gif
is that just the three studieo albums, the remix and the Collision Course? or is there live stuff included in that 4,013,917 plays?

Love my 80 as well...truly a thing of beauty.

I think you and I have similar tastes in music...add me to your social once you're up and running. (My name is Randy Wrecked.)

I used this tutorial and software to do the conversion and didn't have a single problem.

Damn.

I was about to pull the trigger on an 80 at CC today with that 40 off 200 coupon, but they wouldn't take a print out. The dude at the register was trying to get it to go through, but couldn't scan it so I had to go over to customer service and they shut me down. I'll probably have to break down and pay full price though. I really need that extra space; my 30 gig only has 250 MB left and that's gonna fill up fast.

Its all the albums you see when you click on their name, which includes singles, or I don't know if its just triggered by the name of the artist, because there would be more plays if they included the LP Underground CDs 1-6
I hate that when you pause for an extended period, it goes straight back to the main menu.
You can just push "play" from the main menu and it will pickup where you left off.

Ugh, the Zune gods are not on my side.

Returned my Zune 30 to best buy to switch out for an 80 gig (which still shows as in stock). Without looking, they told me they didnt have any, I pulled it up on the kiosk the register was next to. They said 'sorry, we already completed the transaction' and handed me another 30 gig...

Not in the mood to hear bad english from a bunch of underpaid indians, I sent an email to corporate. Hopefully even though its an 'exchange' they'll still let me return it so I can pay the difference should they magically 'find' an 80 gig lying around.

And yea, I know their store locators arent absolute, but 5/6 stores in my area have it in stock, so they must've just gotten a shipment (they could still be in the stockroom)
If anyone wants one of the 30 GB Brown Zunes and missed the Amazon deal, I've got an extra one I'll sell. I'm thinking $97 shipped, or $100 shipped with Paypal. Any interest?

Thanks for the Zune MCalvert1! Got it yesterday! Crazy thing is I just got an email that says the one I ordered from Dell on Black Friday that was back ordered and shipping in February actually is shipping this week. I guess I'll believe it when I see it, but I might have an extra Brown Zune shortly!

Now all I have to do is figure out how to set up my media server so all my consoles etc can access it and start loading the Zune with stuff!

People have been reporting that Dell has been substituting the white ones.

Got my Buy.com A/V pack today, it's pretty cool. The RCAs are definetly OG Xbox-ish. I was surprised the remote is magnetic. They make the USB cords way too short, though. The wall charger is freaking huge.

Question about the old Zunes...

How long do they last? I'm VERY hesitant about buying another hard drive based player after I've had 2 4G 20 Gig iPods break on me, each lasting only about a year and a half. Although, 75% of me believes that they were just made poorly by that fruit company that shall not be named. I'd rather not rile up its fans by saying that their products are overpriced and seem to have shitty lifespans.

I'm debating if I want to get the 80 GB or the 8 GB Flash Zune.

I only have 12 gigs of music, which in reality is probably closer to 8 gigs of music I actually listen to. HOWEVER, if I did have 80 GB of space, I would most definitely use that space for movies and TV shows.

If you're having problems with HDD based MP3 players breaking, you may want to try a Zune. They are supposedly tanks.

However, I think a flash-based drive may be a better way to go for you. Less moving parts to break, you know? Either try a Zune 8 or an iPod Nano. If you only have 12 gigs of music, you don't need to have it all with you all the time. If you like radio, that's a reason to go with the Zune. The PC client is a bit less clunky on the iPod, but the Zune one is still respectable. They are both resource hogs.

If you are interested in trying out a music subscription service (15/month), that's another advantage of the Zune. The thing I like is that I can use my MS points (same as 360) to buy songs--being a CAG, I got 6x1600 points when Circuit City had buy one get one free.
