Update 11/19: DLC Details
Halo® 3 players will be able to enjoy three all new multiplayer maps on December 11 as part of the Heroic Map Pack, the first in a series of downloadable content from Bungie Studios to come via Xbox LIVE®.
ilmH3_chief_006c.gif

Master Chief is excited about the first Halo 3 downloadable content.
Available for 800 Microsoft Points exclusively on Xbox LIVE Marketplace, each map presents a totally different play style.
 • The symmetrical valley of Standoff, with its entrenched bases and fields of boulders is ideal for mid-sized objective and Slayer game types.
 • The vast, labyrinthine passages of the Rat's Nest bring something completely new to the multiplayer experience: an indoor vehicle paradise. Strongly influenced by the Campaign mode, this map is ideal for big team battles.
 • Foundry is the ultimate Forge map. Players can edit every single object in this voluminous industrial warehouse, placing stairways, walls, bridges, and tunnels to create an entirely new play space and build almost any kind of map imaginable.
All three maps will become available for free download via Xbox LIVE Marketplace in Spring 2008, just prior to the next wave of new Halo 3 multiplayer maps.
We'll have more information on the Heroic Map Pack, including how to get the pack for those who haven't downloaded content before, as the release date nears.

Update 10/30: Halloween Special
Playlist of the Living Dead

Posted by Frankie at 10/30/2007 10:25 AM PDT

In the dead of night, cold lids flutter and wake from dread slumber. What do those milky eyes see when they rise from their graves? What do those decaying nostrils scent in the air as they sniff the perfumed night of the boneyard? Brains of course. Succulent, delicious brains. Brains are to zombies as bacon is to people. Or candy, if you’re kosher.
It is a scientific fact that zombies feast on human brains because they are the softest meat on a person and Zombie dental care is not really up to snuff.
To celebrate the gustatory tendencies of the walking dead and to acknowledge All Hallows Eve, we’re launching a spooktacular, eerie-otic and cryptmongous playlist for 27 horror-filled hours, starting on October 31st at 12:01am and ending at 3:00am on November 1st because we love Hawaii Halloween too (Chicken skin kine). It is infection and it is the playlist of the Living Dead.
To answer your eerie queries and uncanny questions, we reanimated Transylvanian Tyson Green from his dank and moldering pit.

Q: Infection, what’s that?
Infection is this really great gametype, inspired by a custom game devised by our community in Halo 2, which we added official support for in Halo 3. In Infection, most players start off on a Human team, with one or more players starting off as Zombies. The odds are stacked heavily against the Zombies at first, but when a Human is killed by a Zombie (as they inevitably are), they join the Zombie team and turn on their former teammates.

Q: How long will the Living Dead haunt matchmaking?
Just for Halloween, from 12:01am to 3:00am the next morning, PST. We decided to let it go a bit late into the morning to give people a chance to play when they got home from their Halloween carousing. Infection is a lot of fun when everyone is into it, but we don’t think it would make a good playlist long term, so it’s going to come and go.
And if everyone has a good time, who knows? It may return, as the restless dead are known to do.

Q: Can I get achievements in this playlist?
Yes, it is set up as a Ranked Playlist, and players will have some good opportunities to pick up a few of the harder MP achievements without any of that pesky guilt. Fending off the hungry dead is as righteous a way as any to score an Overkill. It’s also a good chance to fill out your Ranked Medals with some of the Infection medals, like Infection Spree and Hell’s Janitor.

Q: Can I join with my homies or is this a Lone Wolves style hopper? And how many corpses will I play with?
You can join with a max party size of 4, Infection matches can start with eight players and the games have a player limit of 13.

Q: There’s more than one version of Infection in this playlist, what is each version and how does it work?
We’re using two main versions: Save One Bullet, which is close to classical Infection but with limited ammunition which keeps the Humans from holding off the Zombies forever, and Creeping Death, where the Zombies are a bit slower but shockingly invisible and deadly. Creeping Rockets is a third variant where the Humans are more heavily armed, but the Zombies are tougher too.

Q: Do the maps in Living Dead have the same set-ups that I am used to?
The Living Dead playlist will be the first to use Forge variants in Matchmaking. Lars [Bakken] and Dan [Miller] pulled out all the stops and Forged some masterful variants featuring fortified positions and anti-Zombie booby traps to help get people into the Zombie mind (which is to say, wanting to get into a Human’s mind. Directly.)

Q: Man, I love these gametypes is there any way I can get them?
Any time you play one of these variants in Matchmaking, they’re saved in your Recent Games queue (in the Custom Games lobby, go to select the game type—the Recent Games list is at the top.) They may also show up in the Bungie Favorites this week.

Q: Will there be more special hoppers in the future?
You bet.

Update 10/9: Matchmaking Update:
Looks like the first update is up:
Halo 3: Matchmaking Playlist Update 1

Posted by lukems at 10/9/2007 11:07 AM PDT

Halo 3's Matchmaking Playlists, just like Halo 2's, are dynamic and ever-changing entities. Even now in the perilous Bungie towers, we're looking at new hoppers, gametypes and modes to test for future iterations and changes of these playlists. Multiplayer Lead Tyson Green and test wunderkind David Gasca sent the following list of changes to us -- and these changes are live now:
 • Big Team Battle matches are now 16-player affairs.
 • In the Team Slayer playlist, the appearance of Shotty Snipers has been greatly reduced.
 • Now, when players veto Shotty Snipers, the game that results from the veto will not be Shotty Snipers.
 • In one-sided VIP matches, the attacking team will now see a waypoint for the VIP they are hunting.
 • In Lone Wolves, Slayer gametypes will appear more frequently.

Update 9/26: Skull & Terminal Locations
25.gif
Skulls:

Gold Skulls:

Hint: Skull Collecting

While collecting skulls, keep in mind that you have to start the stage from the beginning (not from a checkpoint), but once you acquire the skull you're seeking, you can save and quit at any time without finishing the stage. This will allow you to collect skulls without having to worry about finishing the stage successfully.

9 Gold Skulls Video:
http://www.gamevideos.com/video/id/15032
Iron Skull - Sierra 117 (If you die, you restart from the beginning of the level.)
At the end of the level. Stand facing the pelican that arrives (no, don't get on it). Turn 90 degrees left and jump onto the large ledge. Walk all the way down until you see another (thinner) ledge on the building in front of you. Jump onto it and follow it all the way to the end where the skull is sitting in the shadows.

Black Eye Skull - Crow's Nest (When you lose shield, the only way to get it back it to melee an enemy.)
At the start there is a massive pipe above you with the skull on top. Walk up the two small stairs and on the left there's some shelves you can jump on to. Jump up to the metal bars and then onto the pipe. Continue to the end and the skull just sitting there, you don't have to use RB to pick this one up.

Tough Luck Skull - Tsavo Highway (Your enemies never back down, always make their saving throws, and always charge you.)
This skull is located after you go through the shield that blocks the road. (After you hear the guy on the radio request help). You'll exit onto a bridge with a large pipe on your left. Climb up one of the yellow ladders and turn right. Continue down and jump over the yellow guard thing that blocks your way. Immediately turn left and jump all the way down on the grey support below. Walk down the support and look left, you'll see a ledge coming out of the cliff. On the ledge is the Skull.

Catch Skull - The Storm (Your Enemies throw LOTS of grenades.)
From the start continue through the level until you first get outside. Grab a vehicle and kill the enemies (there are wraiths about). Then go to the top right corner on the plains where there is some sort of small silo tower. The Skull is sitting on top. To get to the skull: Grenade jump up, or if that doesn’t get you high enough park a vehicle by it and use that for extra lift. (To grenade jump first face where you want to go, then throw a grenade just in front of your feet, then run and jump towards your desired location. The explosion beneath will give you extra lift and hopefully not kill you! XD)

Fog Skull – Floodgate (You lose your motion sensor.)
At the very start of the level as you walk upto the stairs leading into the town (the marines will start talking) look straight up and right to the first building on your right (past the missile turret) A single flood will appear and then jump across, and out, the map. Shoot him before he jumps and the skull will fly down to the ground. However if you shoot him too early the skull will land on the roof and you will have to try again. Do not mistake him for the two flood that jump onto the roof of the building in directly ahead.

Famine Skull - The Ark (Enemies drop 50% of the ammo they usually drop.)
This skull is located after you get the mongoose and drive over some small cliffs. Then you have a choice, straight on or turn right. (Either way you have to go down the right path later.) Continue down the path and defeat the ghosts that attack you, under a big "metal cover thing". Then, after coming out from under the big "metal cover thing", you have to turn right to go up a path leading to some enemies and a small cave/tunnel. Instead stop on the path, and look right to see a bolder jutting out of the rock. Hop on the top of the bolder and up onto the rock. Then jump over onto the top of the big "metal cover thing" (mentioned earlier). Turn left and walk up to the last support that juts out the Skull is at the end of it. This next bit can be a bit tricky. Using a grenade, grenade jump forwards and onto the support. Pick up the Skull. (To grenade jump first face where you want to go, then throw a grenade just in front of your feet, then run and jump towards your desired location. The explosion beneath will give you extra lift and hopefully not kill you! XD)

Thunderstorm Skull - The Covenant (All enemies are given a field promotion, and ranked up to their next available level.)
This skull is located on the second tower so, after shutting down the first tower, grab the hornet and fly over to tower 2. Once you land, head up the staircases as if you were going to the entrance, but just before look towards the centre to see the dividing staircase that leads to a platform. Walk to the end, the skull is sitting on the ground.

Tilt Skull – Cortana (When activated, enemies will become more resilient to your attacks, more armor.)
Continue through the level until you drop down an open (fleshy) hole into a small room with an open door and an energy sword beside a dead elite to the right. In the next room is a circular floor. Walk straight in (kill the flood first) to the middle of the platform and turn left 90 degrees. You should see two small ramps leading downwards. Hop on to the divider of the ramps and up onto the "mushroom like" platform coming out of the wall to your left. (Cortana will say some weird stuff about playing games) Then jump again onto the next platform just above you. Turn around 180 and look up, jump to the next platform and run across the fleshy pipe onto, a bigger, purple platform. Sitting in the centre, in a puddle of bones and fluid is the skull.

Mythic Skull – Halo (All enemies have double their usual health.)
This skull is at the beginning of the level. Head into the cave in front of you, straight away keep to the right and there is a small path that leads off to some rocks, the skull is sitting in front of them.

Silver Skulls:

Blind – Sierra 117 (The arms of the player and the motion tracker disappear.)
Only about 1 minute into the game a ship flys over and lands with water in the background. The scull is over to the far right of screen.

Grunt Birthday Party – Crow’s Nest (If you manage to get a headshot on a Grunt, the Grunt will explode.)
Probably about 6-8 minutes into the level you go through a half circle metal tunnel. At the end of it you jump down a hole. Before you jump turn around and fall backwords. Push forward when you start to fall and you will land on a ledge. The scull is right up in front.

Cowbell – The Ark (Explosions become much bigger in the game..)
Begin by heading all the way to the part of the level where you battle the Scarab. After defeating it, look in the middle of the desert area which you battled it in for a fairly large structure (it’s the building you see if you are at the bottom of the ramp you are supposed to go up, and turn to look in the opposite direction). Inside of this structure are several Gravity Lifts. Take one of these for later.

Next, head up the huge ramp, and head inside of the building (the one with the cartographer inside). Pass through a few of the rooms in this building, and you’ll eventually come to a room with a whole lot of Explosive crates. Right after this room is a Staircase/Hallway that leads to the level below. The Skull is located at the top of the room, at the point where you turn on the staircase to head for the next part of the slope. There are four platforms above you, the Skull is on the uppermost of these platforms. Use the Gravity Lift to jump up to it, and there you have it!

IWHBYD – Unknown
Looks like the IWHBYD skull is found.
Skull Effect: Unlocks hidden dialogue throughout Halo 3’s campaign.

Skull Location:

The IWHBYD Skull has been found! After countless hours from the Halo3Planet Community, we finally present you with the location of the final skull, the IWHBYD Skull!

The Skull is located in the level, “The Covenant”. After defeating the Scarabs, and going inside, get to the location with all 7 Ring Holograms. You must jump through the rings in a specific order. That order is as follows:

1 3 4 6 7 5 4 6 5 4 5 3 4

These rings also produce the notes:

B D E G A F# E G F# E F# D E

After jumping through them in this sequence, you will be awarded the “I Would Have Been Your Daddy Skull”. It will be right next to the bridge that brings you over to the Prophet of Truth.

Update 7/31: 4 Player Online Co-Op confirmed
It’s time for us to sack up and tell you what’s what regarding online co-op.
So you were probably wondering why we didn’t want to commit to two player co-op online over Xbox Live. We certainly got plenty of mail asking, no, demanding that we make it happen. Of course we were working on it, but we were also working on something better. Not two player co-op. Not three-player co-op, but up to four player co-op. Online. On Xbox Live, or sure, System Link if you prefer.
That is correct – up to four player co-op in Campaign mode on Xbox Live or System Link.
We’ve been playing it for quite some time, and bluntly, having some of our greatest ever Halo experiences. We wanted to make sure all our “t”s were crossed and our “i”s dotted before unveiling this important new part of Halo 3’s Campaign mode.
Apart from the horrifying network challenges this new mode presented us, were the various gameplay balance issues it adds to the fray. So we got it all together, polished it, and that’s why we’re revealing it now. As a result, you’re going to want to play co-op as hard as you can stomach it. We’d certainly recommend Legendary, but we’ll be revealing some more ways to make the game more interesting and challenging for multiple players in the very near future.
Acting as a team is a fantastic new twist to the Campaign gameplay – something that works as well on foot, in close confines as it does on the battlefield, with large scale vehicle mayhem. Scared of Jackal snipers? Send out a scout to see what dangers lie ahead. Terrified of an open field? Flank your enemies and swipe their rides. The combinations and scenarios are endless – and you’ll be able to enjoy them time and time again in Saved Films of your co-op exploits.
We mentioned that we’ve been having a blast. We have a lot of stories. Many of them would require that we explain some of the reasons replay will be a big factor, but not quite yet. Soon, we promise.
Like every other aspect of Halo 3, this mode is chosen from a Lobby. Simply select Campaign, choose your network (Xbox Live or System Link) and invite your friends to join you, or they can simply join your session once it’s set up and in a lobby (but they cannot join a game once it’s in-progress). They will pop into your lobby instantly, and when you have all the players you need (anywhere from one to four) you can begin the game from the beginning – or from any of your saved checkpoints.
Split-screen co-op is as ever, limited to two players per screen – but they can if they wish join two other friends online or via System Link.
For fictional reasons, we decided to avoid Halo’s slightly surreal compromise of two identical Master Chiefs and rather, use this opportunity to expand the Halo universe just a little bit. Player one will control the Master Chief, player two will control the Arbiter and players three and four will get the chance to control two brand new Elite characters.
4pFTW.jpg

Allow us to introduce them:
PLAYER 3 (Sangheili)
Name: N’tho ‘Sraom
Affiliation: Fleet of Retribution/Special Warfare Group/Special Operations
History: N’tho ‘Sraom is the youngest member of his Special Operations unit and is one of a growing number of human sympathizers amongst the Sangheili youth. He is a fairly typical young male adult Sangheili—he began compulsory military service at the end of adolescence, and remains unmarried with no close, non-familial relationships outside of his martial order. N’tho Sraom refused to stand idly by while the Prophets replaced Sangheili units with Jiralhanae packs, and now bears deep resentment toward those Sangheili politicians who landed his kind in their current predicament.
Although N’tho ‘Sraom’s romanticized nationalism is emblematic of all Sangheili, he has developed a healthy respect for humanity—not for their physical abilities or martial prowess, but for their audacity and resolve.

PLAYER 4 (Sangheili)
Name: Usze ‘Taham
Affiliation: Fleet of Retribution/Special Warfare Group/Fleet Security
History: Although Usze ‘Taham was born into a respected merchant family he was fathered by Toha ‘Sumai—one of the preeminent swordfighters of this age. Usze graduated with honors from the top War College in the Iruiru region of Yermo, Sanghelios (a distinction he shares with Rtas 'Vadum). Shortly after receiving his first post within the Covenant Navy he was offered a place on the Prophets’ Honor Guard but he declined citing “lack of practical experience”. In truth, he had no desire to be part of a largely ceremonial unit, and at the end of his third combat tour, Usze ‘Taham again refused the post—even though his superiors warned him such behavior could be misinterpreted as apostasy.
Since that time Usze has evaded countless punitive actions, at least two assassination attempts, and served with distinction for two additional tours before the Schism. Following the dissolution of the Covenant, he was approached by the Ascetics to become one of their liaisons within the Navy.

Every player will have identical abilities – only their appearance and weapon starts are different (Elites will start with Carbines versus Battle Rifles for example, depending on the mission). So there you have it. Mystery solved. Internet dramas ended. Four player online co-op it is. And a special thanks to the test, engineering, production and design teams who worked incredibly hard to make this feature happen.

H3 Double Team Arrives, Ranked Big Team Goes Live

Posted by lukems at 5/28/2007 11:23 AM PDT

Last week in the Halo 3 Beta, we ushered Big Team Training into the fold and this week we're launching a ranked version of Big Team action. Additionally, we've added a nouveau classique to the Matchmaking Playlist -- Double Team Training. In Double Team Training, players will pair off and square off in 2v2 games of the Slayer and Skirmish variety. In case you've lost track of the Playlists during the truffle shuffle of adjustments and tweaks we've been making, here's the current breakdown:

Social Matches

 • Big Team Training
 • Double Team Training
 • Team Training
Ranked Matches
 • Team Slayer
 • Big Team Battle
 • Rumble Pit

No offense LP, but I hate that website. None of that shit is confirmed. So they found some random coding in a BETA. I just hate how everyone is acting like it's official, like OMG itz trueezz!!

I wouldn't mind if everyone just put it under as rumor. I found that website a couple days after the Beta released and just ignored it. The author sounds like a moron and seems to just want to get hits for his site by saying that all of this shit is confirmed and will be in the final game.

I'm as big a Halo fan as any, but I'm not stupid enough to believe one guy's findings. For all we know, most of this code could just be placeholder, or even a red herring.

Its info supposedly taken from the Beta Code, I know its not confirmed details, I didnt' put rumor because I thought everyone already assumed that.
I wish there were more online Achievements.
They'll add 250 points with the first $20 map pack raping I'm assuming.

Since DLC is more mainstream, I wonder if they'll churn out those map packs more frequently.

Yea, big raping for maps you'll play for +100 hours.

I got an idea! Why not wait till the next TRU sale and pick up 20 POS $1 clearanced games and play through those crappy games or leave them in their wrapping for ever and then we will see whats a "raping."

Not to mention free MS points (or discounted ones) are widely available.

LOLZ.

j00 got m3.

I have a custom game going if anyone wants to join. Low gravity , glow, and all that crap messing around

If you're wondering how I got custom, it's the vampire effect. I just joined someone who had a custom game going and then quit and it has the custom lobby still going. It doesn't let me keep the custom game going if I quit the lobby all together though.

I've been in the custom games menu before.

Can you actually start the match?

wow sweet, I like the idea of character customization A LOT! That always makes playing as my guy vs others a lot more fun. Plus it seems like they're really considering player input from the other 2 games especially this time around. Excitement for this game just went up 2 points xD

It's the guy right next to the Chief with the microphone. It's the best photo of the guy I could find unfortunately. I'm also curious if they're going to be adding the new S.P.I armor the Spartan III's wear in Ghosts of Onyx.
Just wondering, was 25 the default number for caps to win? Cause that was one long ass game
yeah that was the default, some of the custom options are definitely untweaked, some dont work at all, some(or just this one) have a wrong default, and some have incomplete or missing descriptions

The pistol sucks, 5 headshots to kill, 8 to the body and very slow as you mentioned.

The sword is toned downed a lot. You have to be closer and the guy has to be straight in front of you for the one hit kill. Plus, the weapon delay when you switch to it means you have to have it out instead of hiding it like in Halo 2.

I hope there's more than 9 single player levels in the final.. could be just what had been done at beta time.

The first Halo had 10 levels, and the second one had 9.

Melee+Jump while holding RB.

But it seems to only be availably in "ninja" games (ninjaball and something else). I doubt they're going to keep it in the final game.

Ah ok, so it's only available in the custom games.

The pistol is probably being balanced to be used dual-wielded. How many people use a lone SMG or brute spiker? 5 headshots from 2 pistols would seem to be as deadly as many other weapons.

As long as the levels are long and high quality, I don't care how many there are. I hope the game falls into the 10-12 hour category for first play. Maybe a little longer, with 9-10 hours length after having played through it.

How long would you want the campaign to be?

As long if not longer than HaloCE with an epic last mission as well. Also, as long as the story actually feels finished...unlike Halo 2

Their obviously going to finish it...Why are people crying about the pistol. That and the sniper were the only weapons people ever used in Halo 1 and it got annoying as hell

The sniper is still annoying as fuck. It seems like its more powerfull since you can fire off quicker shots. Theres some games, where I just get into "run and gun" mode and then a fucker ruins the entire match for me by camping out and sniping everyone. I would love to have a game with just short to medium range weapons.

Appearently someone found the glitch to get a custom game started:

...And in case you don’t know how to do it, get a party of eight together, then get invited into a different game where there is just one person. Take the whole party across and the ninth person apparently gets booted into a custom match. Then just invite away and everyone gets to join the fun.

I got in on a custom gametype on valhalla last night. Fun stuff with the reduced gravity and super powerful shields. I spend most of my time launching mongeese of the mancannon and lazering in midair to spin them around like crazy and screw with the physics.
Wraith is still too slow.

Well in my opinion, it wouldn't be Halo then. I think one of the big reasons Halo works so well is because the game has everything, close, medium and long range combat. If you took away the long to medium range weapons, I guarantee everything would just be a giant clusterfuck. It's the reason why settings like Shotguns only, or swords only, are a pretty big waste of time, and require very little skill. It's also the reason why duel-wielding has been de-emphasized because Bungie said themselves, it changed the core Halo gameplay, which was about guns, melee and grenades; when you duel-wielded, you were one-dimensional.

I never had issues with only using a few weapons in each of the Halo games. Halo 1 was the pistol, sniper, and shotgun. Halo 2 was the BR, sniper, sword (I hated the fucking thing but I recognized it's effectiveness in competitive play). Halo 3 is the BR, AR, sniper, and shotgun. And to be honest, I find myself using a wide variety of the guns in H3 because they're so much more balanced than they were in the previous two. Granted, once I start playing MLG gametypes for it, I doubt i'll use anything else besides the BR, AR, sniper and shotgun, but right now alot of the weapons are really fun to use, and most importantly, they're actually useful.
