The time has come to bid our preferred format farewell. An unfortunate but obvious conclusion to the HD DVD vs. Blu-Ray battle is that one of them would have to get buried in the end. I was happy to see many dual-format owners say that they preferred HD DVD, and even now the format offers some features that Blu-Ray is still catching up with.

Although the manufacturing of new players has come to a close, Toshiba will continue to support and service current players for the next several years.

The original HD DVD thread can still be found here and does have some helpful information here and there and was quite useful during the format's life. However, as it approached the 4500 post mark, it's clear that this is as good a time as any to start fresh.

I am not trying to be a buttdick when saying this, but what advantages did HD-DVD have over Blu? I know little about it. I only jumped into Blu because I got a PS3. Not having a HDTV, I didn't want to spend extra money on an add-on. I know the technical aspects of both. I belive that Blu has a larger apature on the lasers and all that crap. Sorry for your loss. I really was pulling for neither. Like I said, I only got Blu because I got a PS3.

Nice OP! Last titles still waiting on are Beowulf, Bee Movie, I Am Legend, Appleseed EX: Machina, and maybe Justice League: Final Frontier...beyond that and any firesales, I think I'm done...well I need to pick up TMNT again, since someone borrowed it and lost it...

I was damn pleased to see that There Will Be Blood is still on track earlier today...if everything shakes out as scheduled right now, that may well wind up being my final HD DVD purchase.

About as basically as possible - it's mostly in regards to interactivity and special features. It's definitely not a dealbreaker for most people, but it's annoying to see stuff like online interactivity missing from Blu-Ray titles since in all other regards they meet or surpass the HD DVD specs.

The menus often just seemed to have a better "feel" to them as well.

*EDIT* - Link expands on it more below and does a better job, so pay more attention to him.

Sorry for your loss.
LOL...thanks...I think. I don't think I'm going to lose sleep over it

The major advantage was that it was finalized hardware, which means that any new titles down the road, were guaranteed to work on your player and if they didn't a simple firmware update would solve the issue. As far as Blu-Ray players go, Samsung is getting sued over one of the launch models because it doesn't support or play some of the newer titles and there's no way to make it play them. Also HD DVD has HDi which Blu-Ray is currently trying to replicate it and its currently called BD-J, same issue here, older players will not be able to use the BD-J functionality. WB stated in the past that Batman Begins and Matrix Trilogy were put on hold because they were waiting for Blu-Ray to get on the ball with BD-J.

Other than that the movies look and sound pretty much identical.

That's going to be one of my final titles too.

Gustav Mahler: Symphony No. 2 Resurrection, There Will Be Blood, No Country For Old Men (import) and Before The Devil Knows You're Dead are the only real things I am looking forward too.

Yea I definately will be buying TWBB. That was definately the best picture of last year and I can't wait to own a copy of it.

Damn. Even though I'm in both camps now it's a bummer to see HD-DVD get killed off.

There's still a few older titles that I'll pick up during any fire sales/eBay panic, but the few remaining upcoming releases I'll get in Blu-Ray. Being that HD-DVD is now finished there's no real point in buying the newer releases if a Blu-Ray alternative is available.

RIP good buddy.

So what are the odds some of the released or soon to be released hd-dvds will become rare and worth some cash? Even some laser disks still comand a few bucks.

I hope that Cheap Hd-dvds and cheap imports will keep me busy enough for Profile 2.0 to come out and prices on blu-ray to drop.

I'm pretty sad to see HD-DVD go and I liked it alot more than Blu-ray for some intangible reason.

I'm trying to decide what to do... I've got 70+ movies, so I'd be taking a big hit selling them all for Blu, but I've only got the 360 add-on for a player. I'm thinking if I could find a cheap, sub $100 stand alone player I'd be set for life. Anyone seen good deals?

Amazon has the HD-A3 for $109.99

http://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-HD-A3-720p-1080i-Player/dp/B000U62N1S

If the price goes any lower on Amazon, they will refund you the difference (up to 30 days)

I was fine with either format "winning" since I'm covered either way. I leaned more towards HD-DVD though since the experience experience felt more fitting of a next-gen format. I still get annoyed that newer Blu-Ray discs lack the spruced up menus and bookmarking feature that I had become accustomed to experiencing on HD-DVD.

I certainly hope the Blu-Ray group gets its act together and earns this "win". I would hate to think this would lead them to drag their feet even more in getting their discs up to spec of the losing format. If that's the case, then we've all lost.

On a side note (I'll admit this is a bit unresearched), I get the feeling that this whole HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray was the Dreamcast vs. PlayStation 2 all over again. The two former had the hardware, but had troubles in software (inability to get EA and studios moving, respectively). It's really just a shame, though. Both had so much to offer.

Someone asked in the format war thread, but it may be better asked here: what do you all think will be the highly-sought after HD DVD movies? Not the ones with low sales, but the ones people will be paying $30+ for in half a year's time?

(e.g., like "Shooter" on BD, currently, as it gets $50+ on eBay)

I'm guessing imports like Machinist, Equilibrium, Band Of Brothers, etc.

I can't imagine any normal/fairly big release going for $30+

Well, Pan's Labyrinth was only printed in a limited quantity before New Line went blu exclusive. It is their only HD-DVD release.
i want cloversfield!

sad to see the other thread die... how do you bring up stats for threads again?
Oh God I hope we get Cloverfield too.

I never learned how to bring up stats on threads either...I always wondered...If anyone could shed some light on that it would be great.

darn and I loved the HD-DVD format as well. Too bad it couldn't get studio support due to hackers cracking the copyright protection.

what do you mean stats for other threads? if you're talking about how many times each person posted just click the number of posts
i think amazon has a mistake on sweeney todd

this one is 23.99, but its mis labeled as HD DVD, think its the 2 disk DVD

maybe they'll honor it
I'm almost positive that one is the DVD.

There's two listings one for $23.99 and one for $27.95

I'm still going to pre-order it just in case.

I guess you haven't seen how many blu-ray rips there are on bittorent?

Hacking had nothing to do with it.

Atleast we know Paramount still supports us for now:

Toshiba may have sounded the death knell for HD DVD Tuesday, but that didn't stop Paramount from announcing a two-disc special edition HD DVD of 'There Will Be Blood' for early April.
One of the most acclaimed films of the last year, Paul Thomas Anderson's epic tale of American oil prospectors is a leading contender for the Best Picture Oscar going into this weekend's ceremony, where star Daniel-Day Lewis is also a front-runner for Best Actor.
Paramount says it will debut 'There Will Be Blood' as two-disc HD DVD on April 8, day-and-date with the standard-def DVD.
Oh...my bad Sporadic...I must have missed it. This is another movie that I know nothing about yet every can't seem to stop talking about it.
No big deal, like I said, it was drown out by the bullshit so it's a good thing it was posted again.

I haven't seen it yet either but it's another one of those movies where the critics are raving and the trailer looks amazing.

I'm basically forced to blind buy it
at least warner is still producing hd dvd's until the end of may... so we still get i am legend and justice league: new frontier still :)
Nice...I can still get those plus Apleseed EX: Machina which would be a blind buy for me, I loved the trailer for it :D

I absolutely can't wait for it! The first one was simply stunning.

First one? So should I not buy this without watching the first one? Is the first one CGI as well or available in HD?

My HD collection has almost doubled in the past few days. I have bought:

The Matrix Collection
2001
Batman
Anchorman
40 yo virgin
Old School
Deer Hunter
Casino
Blade Runner
V for Vendetta
MI:3

I went a little crazy with the death of HD DVD.
