New Details on the Mothership Zeta DLC:
The next piece of Fallout 3 DLC leaves the Capital Wasteland and goes a few miles north up. Mothership Zeta will allow The Lone Wanderer to be abducted by aliens on August 3 for 800
microsoftpointslogosmall.gif
($10, 500 bottlecaps, 20 fingers or 5 Ultra Jet) for Xbox and PC.

Zeta will have players fighting their way to the bridge of a giant alien craft in hopes of escaping and stopping whatever the The Galactic Wanderers are there for. New weapons include the "Alien Atomizer" and the "Drone Cannon." Players will also be able to ally with "an unexpected array of characters," including some from "Earth's past." So help us if we can fight side by side with Abraham Lincoln! "I emancipate you from this mortal coil, alien scum!"

New details on the Broken Steel DLC:
So, you've taken part in Operation Anchorage and visited The Pitt and you're still hungry for more Fallout 3 content? Luckily you don't have too much longer to wait for Broken Steel, the third -- and largest -- piece of downloadable content for the game, which will be made available on Xbox Live and PC on May 5.

Not only does Broken Steel add a new main quest line which, at four to five hours, is longer than The Pitt, but it also removes a lot of Fallout 3 fans' major qualms with the game -- the ending. Broken Steel takes place after the original ending of the game, allowing you to continue to explore the world after the main quest line is complete. It also increases the level cap from 20 to 30 and introduces some new high-level perks, armor and weapons.

The original Fallout 3 endgame has been changed, so that three companions will no longer refuse to aid you in your final task. The Broken Steel story picks up two weeks later, with you dealing of the consequences of your actions. Don't worry, completing Broken Steel won't end the game either. The folks at Bethesda haven't moved the finishing line -- they've dismantled it.

As a result of the level cap increase, you'll be facing much tougher enemies. The amount of experience required to reach the new levels is designed to keep you playing the game for much longer than the new main quest will last, which is why new side missions have also been included. You'll be traveling all over the Capital Wastelands again, though things may have now changed to reflect your earlier actions.

New areas have also been added, including the Presidential Tunnels under the White House and the new world space, Adam's Airforce Base. Fans of Dogmeat will be happy to hear that one of the new perks -- "Puppies!" -- allows your loyal pet to reincarnate at a specific location if something terrible should happen to it. Bethesda were tight lipped on any more perk details, but that means plenty of surprises once the content drops on May 5.

Bethesda was tempted to raise the price for Broken Steel, considering the amount of new content. You'll be happy to hear that their madness soon left them -- the DLC will sell for the usual 800

Older news:
Here are some new details on The Pitt DLC:

If the wastes of D.C. and Alaska just weren't enough places for Fallout 3 fans to visit, then the next DLC pack, The Pitt, for the Xbox 360 and PC should satiate the explorer within. According to UK OXM, 'The Pitt' brings the dystopian story of Fallout to 'The 'Burgh,' specifically taking place in Steel City's industrial district. There-in lies an abandoned steel yard, a vaguely-described "dungeon" area, and a settlement divided into "Downtown's" slave dens and "Haven's" upper class community.

Other details regarding this March-scheduled DLC include new interactive elements with the wasteland scavengers known as Raiders; it appears you can possibly talk with them as opposed to being shot at upon sight. It also seems that Raiders will play a central role in The Pitt as OXM reveals that one major quest involves investigating a Raider boss who supposedly found a cure for mutation. Lastly, new weapons and items are expected to pop up, including the all new Auto Axe. It's apparently a chainsaw-type weapon.

The New DLC packs, The Pitt and Broken Steel are delayed to March and April respectively:

Survivors of the Capital Wasteland will need to wait for Fallout 3's next two DLC packs a little longer. GameSpy reports that the follow-ups to Operation Anchorage, The Pitt and Broken Steel, will be delayed until March and April, respectively.

A Bethesda spokesperson confirmed to us the information is accurate. Guess this will give us more than enough time to finish the seemingly never-ending Nuka Cola Challenge.

Fallout 3 is patched, DLC out on 27th:

http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/13/fallout-3-patched-today-operation-anchorage-dlc-coming-jan-27/
Bethesda just sent us word that the first Fallout 3 DLC, Operation Anchorage, will officially debut on Xbox Live on January 27th for the aforementioned price of 800
microsoftpointslogosmall.gif
($10, 50 caps or 100 pieces of scrap metal), which will hopefully give us just enough time to plow through the new content for Mirror's Edge and Fable 2.

Additionally, the developer has also pushed out a patch today for all platforms, which, among other fixes, finally keeps those pesky, murdered NPCs dead. Sure beats them coming back from the grave all bitter and willing to give you directions to the nearest hotel. It's the same patch PS3 owners got in mid-December, so check out the full patch notes here.
Some details on the new DLC.

http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/12/take-a-look-at-fallout-3s-operation-anchorage-dlc/

Feeling like a feral ghoul? Buck up, because Bethesda has dropped a mini-nuke's worth of screens from its first Fallout 3 downloadable episode, Operation Anchorage. As we reported yesterday, the DLC is a virtual reenactment of the US offensive against Chinese forces in Alaska from Fallout lore.

What can we tell from these shots? Well, for one, Metal Gear Solid 3's Shagohod is in there. (Okay, just a sort-of-look-alike.) Oh, and there's a new weapon, the Gauss Rifle. Neat! Also: a guy looking at a map and – could it be? – an oil pipeline. Dear heavens. Sadly, there's still no official word on when we'll be able to get all cold and frisky in pre-Brotherhood of Steel power armor.
All preorders of Fallout 3 will come with a soundtrack CD:

http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/21/fallout-3-pre-orders-come-with-soundtrack-cd/

There are plenty of reasons to pre-order Fallout 3. Maybe there's a cute checkout boy/girl at your local game retailer that you'll take any opportunity to see or, maybe, it's because Fallout 3 is almost certainly going to be completely and utterly rad. Either way, those that lay a five-spot on the game at their local GameStop are going to be walking away with a five-song Fallout 3 soundtrack disc, according to Bethesda's official blog.

As you can see here, there are a few licensed tracks as well as some originals by recently-announced scorer Inon Zur. As you can also see above it's gorgeous and we want it so bad and please Fallout 3 just come out today oh please please we need this please. Please.

Please.
A collector's edition of Fallout 3 is being released, here is the article:

Dammit, I knew I should have hit up eBay earlier. GameStop has the details on the collector's edition of Fallout 3 due out this fall, and some of the contents look rather familiar. For $20 more than the normal edition ($79.99 console, $69.99 PC), you'll be receiving the much-coveted Vault Boy bobble head in all its encephalitic glory, a hardcover Art of Fallout 3 book, a Making of Fallout 3 DVD, and the game itself. All of this comes neatly packaged in a completely customized Fallout 3 lunch box, which I now have in both broken and non-broken varieties, thanks to the lovely folks at Bethesda. This is one collector's edition that seems well worth an extra $20, unless of course you already own half of it.
http://kotaku.com/378937/gamestop-details-fallout-3-collectors-edition

Here's a hands-on with Kotaku:
WARNING: The following article contains some spoilers. When I saw Fallout 3 at last year's E3 I thought it looked cool but not being one of the cult of Fallout, I viewed it with the same sort of interest that I do most games I know nothing about: Curious, but not what I would call overly excited. All this changed however, this past Tuesday when I headed downtown to check out the new build of the game that Bethesda was showing off.
From a training system tied to a child's development to the fifties-meets-Steampunk look of weapons, Fallout 3 may not have a solid date yet, but after seeing this build, I can honestly say I am well and truly smitten.

After skipping through the opening cinema which we had seen previously, we got straight to the beginning of the game which I have to say was one of the cleverest set of training levels I have ever seen. You start the game as an infant just being born. Once you have been birthed, you meet your father who had the pleasure of delivering you. A series of dialog choices allow you to choose the sex of your character and his/her name. Then a "Growth Projection" machine is brought over to show what your character will look like when they "grow up." Here you can customize the look of your character by using the many features or simply choose a pre-made character. In an interesting mechanic, the choices you make in creating to your character will be used to create the features of your father, who's face (at this point) is covered with a surgical mask. While in this infant mode, pressing the A button will elicit crying from your character.
Soon you have grown up and you're are now a year old. Your mother is nowhere to be found, but your scientist father is at the ready to care for you. (Pressing the A button will give you baby's first word, Dada) After a series of simple tasks like playing with your toys and opening your playpen, you can explore the room a bit. Now it's time to start picking your character's base attributes. This mechanic is accomplished by the ingenious use of a baby book you find lying on the floor. Each page has a different attribute along with an explanatory rhyme. Here you can add or take away attribute points to suit the way you want your character to advance.
Look at that. Our little boy is growing up so fast! It is now your tenth birthday and it is celebrated by your father and friends with a party in one of the rooms of Vault 101 where you currently reside. The momentous occasion is marked by the receipt of your Pip-Boy 3000, a wrist accessory that will remain with you for the rest of the game. The Pip-Boy 3000 has many of uses for interacting with your character as well as emitting light for use in those darker areas of which there are many. Apparently there is another training level where you turn sixteen and are presented with a BB Gun which will help you train up in your shooting. Unfortunately, we didn't get to see that one but instead, fast forwarded to check out some of the real meat of the game.
The next level we were privy to was a Junkyard scene where you meet the dog who will soon become your companion. Once acquired, your best bud can help you find food, chems and weapons. He can also come in handy in a pinch by helping you attack enemies. But, be careful to keep him healthy because he can die if not properly taken care of. If things get too dangerous, you can always have him wait nearby or send him back to Vault 101 where his safety will be assured.
Now we get to the really fun part, the combat and enemies. As any of you who are familiar with Fallout will know, your enemies are mostly radiated mutants or "ghouls" as they are called in the game. There are various strata of ghouls ranging from simple ones who still have some of their functions and can actually be spoken to, to glowing ghouls who are so infected that they practically leak radiation. The ghouls can use this radiation power to harm you while simultaneously healing themselves and other ghouls around them. But ghouls aren't your only worry, the Brotherhood of Steel is roaming around causing trouble as well and you will often come upon two factions locked in battles of their own.
Taking down these enemies is a snap (well, maybe a few snaps) when you make use of the myriad weapons at your disposal. Weapons can be purchased, stolen or taken off of conquered enemies and it would behoove you to get as many as you can. I really loved the design of the weapons themselves, they really exuded a sort of "SteamPunk" style melded with an almost fifties style. Everything looked as if it was cobbled together from what could be found around the devastated environment. (The Fat Man Rocket launcher was a particular favorite of mine) And of course, as you all know by now from seeing the screenshots, the environment is a fictionalized Washington DC that has been ravaged by nuclear war.
The combat moves beyond the simple point and shoot with the use of Action Points. Your character has a set number of these points that can be used for various actions that target certain parts of an enemy's body. Once an enemy is targeted and the proper buttons pressed, the various body parts of said enemy will light up showing you the percentage chance you have of hitting that body part. Then you are free to deploy those Action Points and watch your enemy's limbs and head fly off in all directions. This mechanic is made even more interesting by pulling you out of your regular first person mode into a third person camera mode that will allow you to see more of the delicious mutant killing action. Once the Action Points have been spent, they will regenerate over time, but using your weapons and running around like a madman will slow that regeneration down.
Of course, Fallout 3 isn't all killing and nuclear mutations. You also have the added pleasure of being able to upgrade you character using experience based skill points to bump up your various skills. There are also Perks that can be used to add to your base abilities and allow you to beef up parts of your character that might have been neglected when you first created it. You max out at level twenty though, so be sure to spend those points wisely.
Everything I saw about this game was impressive, but what really got my attention was its overall art style. The optimistic fifties design juxtaposed against the destroyed landscape is a great choice and is seen everywhere from the HUD to the atomic design of Vault 101. Seeing it sprinkled around the world gave me the same feeling I got the first time I saw the art-deco wonders of BioShock. It's nostalgic yet at the same time seems so fresh and new because we rarely see that style of design in modern games, especially FPSs. It also gave the design team a chance to inject the game with a subtle humor that is evident throughout, even seeping its way into the dialog choices and sound.
The team is still on target for a release in the fall of this year but we still weren't able to wrangle a solid date out of them. One thing we did hear however, was a promise of a hands on at E3 so you can bet I will be signing up for that one.
Anyone planning to get the Collector's Edition? It looks so freaking cool, but for $80?
I probably will because I'd love to have that lunchbox and bobblehead. I'm not usually into the whole CE thing, but this looks like a nice set.
I've been waiting (and hoping) for a CE of the game. As soon as I can pre-order, I'm in for one.
Looks like you can preorder it now at Gamestop.

Geez, I hope it's not Gamestop exclusive. I'd rather get it through Amazon with my Prime account (overnight shipping is $4 I think). I'll probably hit my local Gamestop tomorrow and pre-order just to be safe.
Anyone planning to get the Collector's Edition? It looks so freaking cool, but for $80?
I'm getting it. I'll gladly pay $80 for a lunchbox and bobblehead.

I'm thinking I have to have that lunchbox. I jsut hope this game can hold my interest better than the Elder Scrolls games. They have so much potential but they never seem to hook me. I think the Fallout universe will do a better job of that. Hoping so anyway.

OH MAN! I cannot fucking wait for Fallout 3. 1 & 2 are at the top of my 'best of' list. I've never cared about CEs before but this one is really tempting. (I like GTA, sure, but do I need a security deposit box? not really).

That Art of Fallout book is making me drool, though: I love that sort of thing.

Never played any Fallout games...this is an FPS right?

I already have the CE pre-ordered at Amazon...the goodies were too good to pass up.

Duffel bags? Lunch boxes? Does anyone else remember the days when the "special edition" was just a different color case or cart?

Yeah, those days sucks. I will definitely pick up the collector's edition of Fallout 3. This is awesome.

The first two Fallouts were RPGs. The third one is going to be a combination of a RPG and a shooter. You will be able to travel around in either 1st or 3rd person, but the battles with be in third person. The battles will be in real time with an over the shoulder camera angle like in Gears, or Resident Evil 4. It will have some RPG elements, including being able to level up (the highest level is 20.)

Haven't played 1&2 but 3 looks and sounds awesome from everything i've read lately. I'll bite on the collectors next time i'm at GS looks like a really nice CE. From the replies in this thread I think i'm gonna look into finding the first two games in the series as well.

I hope this isn't gamestop exclusive, but it looks like it is... I was planning on buying whatever CE they offered for Fallout 3, but if I could have picked any items to be in it, it'd be these! I was so jealous of those bobble-heads when they gave them to kotaku and other press.

wow i'm tempted to get a collector's edition because its pretty neat looking.. but the soundtrack is pretty cool too.. surprised i didn't see the Phenomenauts on there.. they kind of fit this world.

This game looks amazing. I hope the combat plays out better then Mass Effect....I loved Mass Effect, but it could never make up its mind on what it wanted to be, and so the combat for me fell a bit short.

Only thing keeping me back is you never know if the 360 version might have frame issues or not....

This is my #1 gaming want for this fall. If they can even come close to matching Oblivion but in a sci-fi universe it will be the total shit!!!!

So, everyone has their jaws agape at the latest installment of "Slender Heroes Rehashing Ham-Fisted Cliche" being on the 360, but no one seems to be talking about Fallout 3:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rg9t7uXkLyA

There was a developer walkthrough of gameplay somewhere, but I can't find it. There is some gameplay at the end of this trailer though, so I'm wondering what everyone's thoughts on it are?

I LOVE fallout and fallout 2, and I'm pretty stoked about this version. Being able to switch between oblivion style play and classic fallout play? Yes, plz.

Post-apocalyptic anything gets me psyched. From Bioshock to Half-Life 2, if things are looking bleak, count me in. This is my most anticipated game for the rest of the year. I hope it lives up to its pedigree.

Classic Fallout play? Unless I'm missing something, I haven't seen any gameplay videos that show this. The third person mode is over-the-shoulder, isn't it?

Wow. I just watched that video. Not only was the Vault-Tec video hilarious, the gamplay looks balls-rad. Can't wait.

Also, you can call that number that's in the trailer.

For a game that's getting so much hype, i'm surprised that nobody has posted in this thread in over two weeks. Looks like a 10/7 release date, that's only two months away.

I have to admit that i'm getting swept up in the hype and may buy near the release, but having never played Oblivion i'm not 100% sure. This setting definitely looks more my style though.

I'm assuming everyone here that's excited about this has already invested 100+ hours into Oblivion?

I've invested over 100 hours in Oblivion and will be picking this game up... but I won't be spending nearly that much time as I did with Oblivion just because I don't want to do it again. I just hope Bethesda keeps supporting this game with DLC (new cities?) and don't release stupid DLC such as horse armor or like a wizards tower type DLC.

I'm starting to look forward to this. I loved the shooter/RPG hybrid gameplay in Mass Effect as I have no patience or interest in turn based games anymore. And this looks like the shooting gameplay will be much more refined vs. the rudimentary shooting in Mass Effect.

Probably through it no my x-mas list as I should be done with Gears 2 single player/co-op by then.

Fallout 3: The result of Oblivion raping Bioshock.

I actually am looking forward to this game, even though I was initially disappointed that it seems to be such a departure to the series. I felt the same initially about Bioshock, but quickly got over it and ended up loving it for what it is, not what I initially wanted it to be.

Fallout 3's status in Australia is still 'refused classification' (i.e. Banned) :(
Looks like I'll have to import a copy (thank god I also have a ps3 and thank god for regionfree ps3 games :D )

Has anyone made a comprehensive list of the all of the preorder specials? Just by going through this forum, I've noticed that Amazon has a special Survival Edition with a clock, GameCrazy has a Vault Boy keychain, Circuit City has a $10 gift card, and Gamestop might just have the standard CD/poster combo? I'm not sure.

Anyway, can a list be added to the first thread just so we can keep track?

Here are the sources so far:

i'm eagerly awaiting this game for sure. the september issue of PC Gamer magazine (available now) has a walkthrough of some early missions in the game and it looks astounding! xbox 360 version should be just as good, of course.

after logging over 200 hours (yea, i'm a nerd) in oblivion, i'm ready for a new, huge RPG to explore, and Fallout looks like it will deliver.

:bouncy:

oh and i preordered at gamestop and can't say i'm too impressed with the extras. the cd has 5 songs that i'm sure will be great in-game but are sorta lame just listening to them, imo. the poster is small, but pretty sweet i suppose.

at least it didnt cost anything extra, i'm just waiting for the actual game!

Out of curiosity, anyone have speculation on what version will run better between the PS3 and 360 versions?

As usual, I'm struggling with deciding what version to get. I don't care too much for the 360's d-pad, but I'll live with it that version runs more smoothly.

I figured Oblivion would be a good measure between the two, so that led me to preorder the PS3 version. Would like to hear any other thoughts, though.

Has anyone seen the PS3 version running? It seemed like on all the websites covering E3, all the impressions were based on 360 builds of the game at the MS conference and on the show floor. Since then, I've seen no new coverage. I'm also up in the air on which version I'm getting.

I don't care about DLC. I generally prefer the 360 controller. I preferred the PS3 version of Oblivion because they significantly reduced load times. (I played through it and the Shattered Isles expansion on the 360 once, and then picked it up again on the PS3 when it got cheap, and I'm about halfway through the game again.)

Has anyone heard/seen anything comparing builds of the two versions?

(Please no PS3/360 sux posts). I don't want flames, just info.

I really don't think there will be much difference. Probably some graphical differences, but that's probably it. Which might make it harder for you to chose...

The more I see about this, the more excited I get. This is like the perfect combination of Oblivion and Bioshock. The stunning, endless gameplay of Oblivion, and the mysterious, alluring setting of Bioshock.

This is one of my most anticipated games of all time. I'll be in line at midnight if I can.

Or it's a great addition to the Fallout series...?

It's interesting to see both perspectives. There are those who are looking at this game from the not having played Fallout view, basing their opinions on what they know about Bethesda and how Fallout 3 is similar to other games, which is what you said. Then there is the Fallout fan perspective. I am really looking forward to Fallout 3 because I am a Fallout veteran—I guess that's a good description—and because Bethesda makes great games.

There are a few bits that worry me because I think they might take away from the Fallout-ness, but Black Isle Studios isn't around anymore so I'll take a Fallout 3 from Bethesda any day.
