Mostly quality stuff ... that I don't own.

If you had to list 10 (or even 20) must-own films, what would they be? I'm afraid my collection is severely lacking in the classics.
Well, 'classic' is mostly subjective. Plus, I mean, I know plenty of people weaned on modern movies just can't get into the mindset to watch 'old movies' Know what I mean? If you really want to expand your horizons, I'd suggest Netflix or Blockbuster Online, that way you're not throwing away money on films you may not like (hypocrite warning! :D). If you're looking for suggestions, IMDB's top 250 is a good place to start, working your way down. Good idea, since it is mostly movie dorks on the internet, our peers! But, I'd just go with the well-known classics, Kane, Casablanca, Godfathers, 12 Angry Men, Sunset Blvd., anything by Hitchcock, Howard Hawks, Stanley Kubrick, Woody Allen. Just go through the biggest names and films, and pick out whose style you like, if any, and seek out more.

Also, you very rarely go wrong with a Criterion I'd suggest anything by Bergman (my personal favorite), Kurosawa, Fellini, Antonioni, Godard, Becker, Truffaut or Bunuel. I'm a bit of a Criterion whore, so I've seen quite a bit, and like any human being, I'd be more than happy to babble on about my opinions of anything I've seen. :p

Criterion, with one or two exceptions (I'm looking at you, Armageddon) can do no wrong. There's a local B&N-esque bookstore that has an entire section of their store devoted to Criterion DVDs, and seeing it made me spooge myself.

Hey, Armageddon was 'important' like they say on the back of the case. It's important because it established the formula of Hollywood something something, I dunno. I'm sure they've made some good money, and I bet the a/v was great for its time. But hey, it's their right, if they wanna throw out something mainstream to make some money, it's fine. My ex used to have a mom and pop video store near her place, and they had a huge wall of Criterions. I had the same reaction you did, since they had plenty of OOP discs like Hard Boiled, Silence of the Lambs, Spinal Tap, The Killer. But, they got shut down, unfortunately. :p

Thanks. The IMDb list just pisses me off because Shawshank is #2 and I never thought it was anything special.

I only have a few criterions ... Beasite Boys, Chasing Amy, Life Aquatic, Life of Brian, The Rock, Royal Tenenbaums, Rushmore ... and that's it. More than I thought, but still not many.

Well, I'm the first one to admit that they're very prohibitive, in terms of cost. But, if you're a big fan of learning about cinema, and the language of film, then it's money well-spent. I've got..83 last count? Like I said, total Criterion ho

I'm going to be heading to Fry's tomorrow to pick up some great deals : Astro Boy (GBA) $9.99 and Offspring GH for $9.77. Best deals on these that I've seen so far.

I've just got to get this out in the open. Crane was too damn pretty in Batman Begins. His bright blue eyes stuck out under the mask and it's just frightening that this pretty boy could scare the shit out of people with his hallucinogen.

EDIT: I got a nice GTA:SA poker chip in my OXM today. Very cool.

If I put in another order to DDD I'll probably be adding 5-10 to my collection.

I put in my mostly OOS order, now I have to consider another order because there was only one criterion on my list currently OOS. :whistle2:k
Modium, whos the guy in your sig?
Klaus Kinski from the movie Fitzcarraldo. Great film, if you ever get a chance to see it. Kinski plays it to perfection, as usual :D

Nice choices on Kane and the Hitchcocks, Subs. Although, be glad they're backordered, which gives you time to make a decision regarding this: http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=57539

I'm following the thread on HTF to see if they're actually remastered, or just a repackaging of the old editions. I've only got Psycho, Vertigo, Rear Window and The Birds out of all the Universal Hitch discs, so I'll be getting it regardless, since it's a great deal, $120 for 14 films.

I don't think I will be albe to sit through that.

Currently OOS stuff that's on my maybe list for tomorrow:
I wouldn't go for High and Low, personally. It's an old Criterion with a non-anamorphic transfer and no extras whatsoever. Just not worth it, for me, not even with the 20% discount. I have no problem renting it if I feel like watching it, while I wait for an upgrade, or even until next-gen DVD hits. Also, you might want to get the Godfather set, even just for completist's sake. The third movie wasn't *that* bad, honestly. Nowhere near the first two, but still decent enough to warrant owning. Plus, the set comes with another disc of extras, if you're into that. :p Blue Velvet is excellent though, if you haven't seen it. Dennis Hopper is just..wow.

For some odd reason, I don't own any Hitchcock DVDs yet. Not even Rope, which is one of my favorite movies of all time. Thus, I will most definitely have to get that collection when it comes out.

I'm definitely into that, but it's not OOS yet.

I'm also trying to decide if I should just get Seven Samurai (which is OOS) or wait to see if the Kurosawa collection goes OOS.

You might as well try and get the collection, because every movie in that set is damn good.
