Am I missing something on these badges? You need to have 5 sets of them to max your lvl... for every game... each game only gives you 4... so they're expecting people to seriously buy all their missing ones? You figure FTL is a set of 8.. you get 4... so just for your first badge you need to buy 4 extras. That's not including the other 32 you'd need to hit lvl 5.....
There's no need to craft badges. It's just there if you want to mess with it. Leveling up your badge to level 5 is really more of a trophy or achievement you likely paid for. Me, I keep the cards For the games I want badges for, and I sell off the cards for games I don't care about. I use that money and a little of my own to get the badges I want. Entirely unnecessary system, but it's snagged a bunch of us in.

I just realized I spent almost 6 bucks lvling my badge for this summer sale all the way up.  I did get a couple of emoticons and stuff that are worth next to nothing TO ME... but I just... looking through my game library... it's been a while since I touched my PC.  My library is stacked.  And now Steam expects me to go play Skyrim more than the 160+ hrs I already have to earn 4 badges to prove I played it... :p

Oh wells... pretty much what I expected to see.

the badges really aren't about proving you've played a game, otherwise you wouldn't be able to craft badges for games you didn't own.

imo cards shouldn't be given out for just idling a game. they should require each game have one achievement; beat the single player on normal. if it's a multiplayer game, make that requirement something like win an online match. just something universal and simple. you have that achievement, then you can get the cards for the game. would make them worth more than the pennies that they are, and would keep people from just buying cheap games for the stupid cards.

obv they shouldn't be based on silly achievements but i think if each achievement game was required to have either 'beat sp on normal' or 'win an online match' that'd cover 99% of the games and would give cards out only to people that actually play their games.

^^

I'd prefer they were tied to achievements as well, but I don't see that happening now the current method is in place. Would surely cut down on the amount of cards, which would cut into Valve's profits :shame:

Agreed 100%. Cards should be based off doing certain things within a game. Not only would that help the market but it'd also kind of make them mean something.

Awesome Sale for me as someone who is fairly new to PC Gaming

It's trivial to get achievements on Steam without actually playing. You'd cut out some of the people who just idle for cards, but it wouldn't make them any more difficult to get.

Thanks louie!

Been tempted by RCR but not at the sale price, this is good enough for me though. It's 20% higher in the UK.
I was tempted for Retro CR by the Steam sale, but the dev's offering both DRM-FREE and then your choice of either Steam or GOG version was the instant buy.

Giving me BOTH a DRM-FREE version and a Steam-version = Epic win.

I love GOG and all - but that's just another DRM-FREE version (since dev's are offering DRM-FREE Version up to you no matter what) plus a few extras I didn't want/need.

I'll take Steam Achievement and Cards, thanks. :D

Best of both worlds (DRM-FREE + Steam worlds)!

I'm not sure what the hullabaloo over DRM-free is. It's not that I'm overpriviledged, I just haven't a clue (Steam newblet)

My plan is pretty similar except for the part where I use some of my own money. I made a couple of game badges by buying my missing cards and selling off cards I don't care about and that's probably what I'll continue to do.

EDIT: I don't think there's any point to levelling up badges unless you just enjoy giving Gabe money (at least until Valve reveals next year's meta-game that involves collecting level-5 badges!).

Well, I bit on the Daedalic Bundle, which includes Deponia, Chaos on Deponia, Edna and Harvey: Harvey's New Eyes, The Dark Eye: Chains of Satinav, and A New Beginning-Final Cut. $19.99 for all five (75% off). I had them all on my wish list already, but hadn't bought them yet because I was waiting to upgrade my Mac and/or get a Windows laptop. Well, this should give me some added motivation.

The list:

Daedalic Bundle: $ 19.99

FTL+soundtrack:   $ 3.49

Just Cause:   $ 0.27

Just Cause 2:   $ 2.99

Legend of Grimrock:   $ 5.09

Star Wars KOTOR 2:   $ 3.39

Anna:   $ 3.39

Thomas Was Alone:   $ 2.49

Blocks that Matter:   $ 1.24

iBomber Attack   $ 0.89

My total for the sale: $43.23. And I guess I can try to sell my four cards for... um... $1? :newbie:

DRM = Digital Rights Management.

It's usually used to kill the used-market and/or to try to keep piracy down.

DRM con involve many things, up to the dev's and/or publishers. It can include forcing activating online before you can boot a game; limiting number of PC's you can activate a game on; disc needed in the drive (old-style DRM - when discs were actually a big deal and most people bought PC games from Retail); inserting a serial code to get the game to install/boot; activating your serial code online on Steam (or another service like it); forcing a game to be played always online via your own special account w/ the game company (see Diablo 3 and many MMO's); etc etc. DRM usually forces you to jump through hoop(s) of some kind just to get a game to boot.

DRM-FREE = no restrictions on installing your game on certain number of PC. Just get the game files and go!

No bullcrap attached.

DRM is often notorious (see StarForce, Securom, Tages) of causing all kinds of problems. Securom was known to black-list your game from booting, if you had virtual drive programs installed (i.e. Daemon Tools, Alcohol 120). StarForce was known to cause security issues w/ Windows - and even measured your disc-drive and spun it slower and faster, to check to see if your disc was legit; which could shatter your disc to pieces and/or even wear your disc-drive out. StarForce also is OS-specific b/c of the ways its drivers were made - so if StarForce DRM wasn't supported on an OS, your game wouldn't even start (unless say you downloaded an unofficial crack; SF updated their DRM to work on new systems w/ a SF-drive patch; and/or the dev's pulled DRM-check from the game in a patch).

Steam is a set of DRM actually - usually, its DRM makes you have to activate your game online first; and it ties it forever to your Steam account. If you buy a Steam-game from retail - this might annoy you, if you're not on the Net much or have a crappy Net connection. Since most people (at least in USA) likely have an Internet connection or are actually buying their games via Steam directly, you're not gonna often notice the activation step at all here - buying a Steam-key from somewhere else (like Amazon DVG, Gamergate, etc) and registering it on Steam or buying a game through Steam, you basically did the activation step. Plus, for SP games, many Steam games work in "offline mode" (after its been activated), so if you're having problems connecting to the Net or say Steam's servers are down for whatever reason - you can still run the game.

From one noob to another, or how many others are lurking, this is the most important part that you need to research. Steam can run in an "offline mode" so don't get completely discouraged if your net, like my Alabamian connection, isn't all that awesome.

Exactly.

It's very important to know Steam has an "offline mode." There's been times my Net connection was out on either my end or my ISP's end; or Steam's servers were out for "maintenance" - and I just booted Steam up; Steam will take a bit to look for a connection; can't find it so it'll asked me to go into "offline mode"; I'll agree; and then I could play the SP portions of the game I wanted to play. :D

Also important to see this GOG Thread, in case you want to know what games on Steam that once you DL'ed them and all, you won't even have to worry about Steam DRM. People love to screw around - and have found ways around Steam's DRM, in games that don't really force Steam DRM on it.

I doubt anyone cares, but here's how I did:

From my wishlist:

XCOM: Enemy Unknown

Dark Souls
The Witcher 2
Fallen Enchantress: Legendary Heroes
Worms: Revolution

Unplanned purchases:
Critter Crunch
Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed
System Shock 2
Chivalry: Medieval Warfare
Surgeon Simulator
Time Gentlemen, Please! and Ben There, Dan That

Pretty much all paid for with card sales with the exception of FE which I got off the forum.  Also prior to the sale I got Rocksmith with card money, so it's been a good month of adding to the backlog for me.

All in all I have to say I was happy with this sale.  I got four out of my top five most-wanted games at great discounts for free with card money within the first three days of the sale.  The rest of the time my account was mostly coasting, but as I've been on vacation anyway I didn't waste time sitting at my computer all day waiting for better discounts and then griping when I didn't get them.  Now I just have to decide if I'm going to spring for Rogue Legacy at Amazon to get 5/5.  I almost never pay more than $7.50 for a game, but in this case I might make an exception.  As long as I've been waiting for XCOM, Dark Souls, and the Witcher 2, I think I'd play RL before anything else right now.  Kudos to the developers.

bought hotline miami, borderlands goty, and the political machine.

couldn't pull the trigger on dishonored or tomb raider, small backlog and black friday is around the corner!

Thank you, that makes a lot of sense and I see now. Once again, console gamer, all of this is new to me.

Adding in an easy mode sounds like something you might do if you're trying to appeal to Mac & Linux players. ;)
GSTD is pretty damned hard. Indie games are extremely dependent on people telling their friends about how awesome they are. If you have a game that only the hardcore Contra fans are going to recommend to the other 8 hardcore Contra fans, you won't sell many more copies. Making it a little more accessible will open GSTD to many more people, only at the cost of annoying those 8 hardcore Contra fans.

imo cards shouldn't be given out for just idling a game. they should require each game have one achievement; beat the single player on normal. if it's a multiplayer game, make that requirement something like win an online match. just something universal and simple. you have that achievement, then you can get the cards for the game. would make them worth more than the pennies that they are, and would keep people from just buying cheap games for the stupid cards.

obv they shouldn't be based on silly achievements but i think if each achievement game was required to have either 'beat sp on normal' or 'win an online match' that'd cover 99% of the games and would give cards out only to people that actually play their games.

The most critical adjustment I want from them is to drop all cards synchronously. fcuk :ziplip:

I'm not sure what the hullabaloo over DRM-free is. It's not that I'm overpriviledged, I just haven't a clue (Steam newblet)

DRM-free enables the joy of swashbuckling without potentially walking the plank.

It's like braving the elements in a Winnebago.

camping

Requiring an achievement to unlock a card would just make use of that Steam Achievement Manager more common, hence likely having Steam enforce restrictions on it, which is probably a whole lot more work that it's worth. The current system rewards you for simply owning a game, which I think is good enough. You bought the game, therefore, you're rewarded.

About Retro CR, how long/short is the game?
Depends on how you play it, but in terms of just storyline completion, its fairly quick, if about 7-9 hours is quick. Map is pretty decent, and its charm of old style GTA is surprisingly great.

Hmmmmmm...HIB next week? They've been laying awfully low lately.
We can only hope, and by hope, I mean expect.

Psydero, where are the motherfucking weeklong deals detailed in the OP? Are there any?

Your predecessors' are shaking their heads in their graves right now.
