Wow, this is a phenomenal Steam deal. CoH is one of the best RTS games I've ever played.

Blah, I can't wait until the solly and demo craze dies down. The game is totally unplayable for me right now; spam is just off the charts. I really like unlocks like the Kritz and Buff Banner that promote teamwork. Stuff like the Sandman, Eyelander, Equalizer, etc. I find completely retarded...

Grenade probably has something to do with a taunt kill. The Soldier's bugle should prove extremely useful on A/D maps when BLU needs that extra push. Now combine the bugle buff with a sniper who jarates the cap point before the charge and you have some serious ownage.

an inferior product arriving years too late from a company that no longer makes cool PC games? yay.

In my experience, most pub demos are complete crap on maps w/o chokepoints. KotH_Harvest provides easy demo hunting as soldier. I called it a night after dominating everyone on the opposite team with [DEMOMAN] in their name :p

well I racked up 40 demo kills tonight. demos probably killed me 20 times or so (couldn't be much more), so I came out ahead for the solly side. on non-PL and cp maps, the demos usually suck. all of my deaths to demos were on gold rush. tomorrow: I'll play as demo and die to the soldiers

that'd be a problem if it took skill to kill soldiers as a RED demo on Dbowl or Gold Rush.

    Linux vs Windows 7

Windows 7 for gaming; Ubuntu Linux for everything else. Yay for dual booting. I like the security and customization of Linux. Windows is my videogaming playground and that's about it.

The thing is mods can be extremely profitable. Would Valve and Steam be what they are today without mods like Team Fortress Classic and Counter-Strike? I think there's a happy medium between controlled subscription hellhole and free-for-all, at least when it comes to online gaming.

If you're having performance problems, try playing on 24-person servers. Valve once said something about how performance falls off a ledge once you get more than 24 people playing (i.e. the game wasn't designed for more than that).

Games that are better on the PC than on consoles

Yeah, back when I was really into videogames, I had a gaming PC and several consoles. Both had their uses. Consoles, for example, lack the in-depth and incredibly geeky 4X and war games I enjoy so much. Stuff like Civ IV, EU III, Alpha Centauri, GalCiv II, etc. But you can't play multiplayer...

Modern Warfare 2 has NO dedicated servers

heh, most of my PC gaming time is spent on a community TF2 server. PC gaming, for me at least, has always been about customization, modding, and community. Take those things away and you might as well buy the game on consoles instead. But maybe that's the point.

Left 4 Dead [PC] 50% off on STEAM - $14.99

So tempting. Really didn't like the demo, though, but it might be fun for a few hours.

    Steam: Garry's Mod - $4.99 (50% off) until 9/21

I read somewhere that Gmod can hold like 128 players...anyone know what game mode that is?

So my understanding is that external idling applications =/= idling servers. Is this correct? I ask because I used an idling server for about 4 hours the other day (temptation got the better of me), but decided it wasn't worth wasting electricity on idling a TF2 character :p

Half Price Books Labor Day Sale - 20% off Everything in the Store

The Berkeley HPB has a nice PC game section. Never paid more than $15 for a game there. Sometimes they'll sell used console games in the clearance section. I've also seen some strategy guides around.

Half Price Books Labor Day Sale - 20% off Everything in the Store

The HPB in Berkeley, CA is excellent. It's the only one remotely nearby, so I can't comment on the others. Picked up a hardcover set of Gibbon's The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire for $25 thanks to a 50% off coupon. Also got Medieval Total War II Gold for like $8.

That would absolutely ruin Team Fortress 2. As an FPS, TF2 should be entirely skill-based (I detest random crits for this reason); some bozo shouldn't have an advantage just because he stumbled on a level 500 backburner instead of a level 20. There's also numerous inherent problems with visually...
