Dang. Up to Denpa Men 3? I still haven't touched 1 or 2.

Really wish the 3DS had more traditional JRPGs. While I loved most of Bravely Default, the real lack of alternatives probably forced me to slog through the final third of the game rather than pick something else up. In hindsight, maybe it wasn't so bad. But at the time... yeesh.

I only played it on Wii but Rage of the Gladiators is pretty dang good for a Punchout clone. Far better than Infinity Blade.

Me too. I think I spent a lot of Bravely Default trying to convince myself "this is like the games I always loved, only better!" I actually never made it past chapter 4, to where it supposedly gets cruddy. I kept telling myself I'd go back and finish it, but it seems like a chore now. Maybe I'm just obsessive, but I don't like the job system and get sick of that in games.

It would be great if it was quality, but I'm not holding my breath. And yes, the $10 vs. $0.99 thing is a little tough to swallow.

There are still probably more traditional RPGs on 3DS than on any other console, though. But yes, I agree--more would be really nice.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that feels that way. I thought the game was going to be great and the fact that you can adjust the random encounters would speed things along. But yeah, the game felt too much like a chore and I, personally, have never been a huge fan of the job system in RPGs.

Bravely Default is an excellent game, but maybe I'm just getting too old for games of its ilk.

I don't think we're getting old. I hope it's not that. I know I sang Bravely Default's praises (and bought lots of copies), but it just seems to be missing something. I'm really glad it sold well, because I want more RPGs. Hopefully the sequel will be more pleasing. BD did feel like a developer kind of trying to figure out what they wanted to do (even though we got the enhanced version).

For the people who are more familiar with the Nintendo eShop than I:

What do you think the chances are of the Phoenix Wright game to go on sale ever? I want to play it but $30 sounds like a bit too much... :/

I know Monster Hunter Tri Ultimate (another Capcom game) has been on sale on both the 3DS and Wii U eshop, so it's not impossible.

Also, if all you're looking for is a discount, every now and then eShop points go on sale at retailers for up to 20% off.

Well, it's a full retail game, and if it had come out at retail like the others we're familiar with, it would have cost $40, and we'd think $30 was a swinging deal.

Ah! Exactly the kind of insight I was looking for. Thank you!

Hmm... that's a good point, but then again, we're CAGs aren't we? A non-Nintendo 3DS game for only 25% off? Not enough!

From what I remember, the European version went on sale when the layton vs wright game came out there. One would expect the same to happen when it releases here.

As others have mentioned it's had a single sale world wide I believe and it was a 20% off sale that happened at the same time we got a 20% off eShop credit sale. Capcom has shown a willingness to do eShop sales with MH3 but they also have had a lot of retail sales on it. Basically it's hard to say but I would at least wait until your ready to immediately play it. If nothing else maybe we'll get another 20% discount on eShop credit.

I hope that sale on eShop credit becomes a recurrant thing (has happened twice recently and may have happened in the past; I can't remember).  I'm almost out.  Then again, so is my 32GB SD card.  :(

Many of the skills in each class are unused (by me). Though it adds variety, their usage is fairly limited. This happened with Fire Emblem too where I just stuck with some basic stuff and it turned out to work the best. I do like the ability to mix and match skills though, which has been a great part of the Final Fantasy series.

Once I got the Spiritmaster job class, the fights are pretty much over. Fairy ward and Stillness are way OP. Oh and having to run through the game 5X is more than just a chore, so I know what you mean about boring... maybe not so much boring, but more tedious.

Pokemon Art Academy is officially coming here.  Sadly we don't get it until the fall when JP gets it next month and EU in July.  Takes longer for those bits to move across the ocean than across the land I guess.

Yeah, I guess the game isn't really even hard anyway. It's just all these options thrown in for you to fiddle with if you want, but then you end up thinking you have to when... you don't. I just get sick of all the fiddling. Final Fantasy Tactics, for instance, is such a cool game, but my god I get sick of feverishly planning which classes for which characters, constantly swapping their equipment, etc etc etc. I am tired of job systems. No one's lives have any meaning because they are all everything. In Final Fantasy IV, Tellah was A SAGE. Each person's class had deep meaning. Cecil was a Dark Knight (whoa) and became a Paladin (WHOA WHOA). That was a major theme in the game. Even Final Fantasy X's sphere grid (which I actually really liked) had everyone as a certain class, and you had to master that before branching off into other people's territory. Too much freedom without reason just becomes meaningless and freeform, at best, and a burden on the player at worst.

When a RPG becomes more about managing stats and classes and less about enjoying the world and story, that's when I lose interest.

For me, less is more.

FTFY. I knew that already, but some poor sap no longer wants to play FF4. I'm with you guys on this. Give me a character, tell me what he is, and let me figure out how to make him better at what he does. I don't care about being able to turn him into something completely different.

In the job system games, Tactics included, you come across someone that you think would do well in a certain job, so you start leveling him up to do just that. A few hours into the game later, your team meets someone that also holds that job... and is 5 levels better than the one you've been building. Of course I want the higher level guy, but I'm not just going to throw this guy to the curb. Now he has to change jobs and start leveling all over again. (If I'm way off on this, please correct me, because I only played 4 hours of Tactics: WotL on PSP years ago before coming to this conclusion).

Thanks. I usually don't check the eShop for updates to post 'till Thursday, my bad.

Nope, I think you're pretty much right.

I don't want to play FFIV over and over either (well, okay... I kind of do); I just wish we'd get some new games that I liked as much.  I get tired of how every game now has this "everyone can do everything!" mentality.  I'd rather have it be a bit like real life, where yes, generally, anyone can do anything, but certain people are going to be better at or like things better.

Maybe this is some kind of Japanese fantasy.  They're stuck their whole lives at one corporation, wishing they could job hop.

So did anyone buy tappingo? I saw a fun little video of it on the Nintendo YouTube channel and I'm thinking of getting it but I would like to hear a fellow CAG's opinion.

I didn't play a lot but it's fun. It's not Picross or anything but for $2 on sale it's worth it if you like that sort of puzzle game.

It's funny that you guys are talking about FF IV... I'm actually playing the ds version right now for the first time. I'm at the magnetic cave part, and I'm enjoying it so far.

Some kind of restriction (like multi-classing in D&D) would certainly help keep the grind down and having people really think about the type of build they want to have (pure class vs multi-job). I like having the option, but I'm starting to feel the tedium in it all slowly. With FF10 and on, the sphere grids (and variants) did a good job of keeping skills for the individual while leaving it up to the player on how to progress. 3,5 and 7 left it pretty much wide open on job systems/materia. FF6 sorta had the same basis, but with stat gains on levels. It kept your job class the same throughout the game, but based on your gains, your char was good at certain things (or all if you wanted to). I think this was the best approach, and perhaps why I liked the game above all the rest in the series (that and the awesome story and very likable characters).

I liked DQIX's system of literally making your team from the ground up.

I would like to see something like that for Miis.
I thought that was neat, too, except it's still that same damn job system that I'm so sick of, and perhaps more importantly, it really seemed like a downgrade in personality from the characters in DQ VIII who actually spoke. The, coupled with the heinous downgrade in graphical quality going from 3D on PS2 to 3D on the DS, and the game being built for multiplayer instead of single-player...

sorry still whiny and bitter... DQ IX and X should have just been their own series instead of taking over DQ proper.

I take it you never played DQ III.

While I prefer IX to III, my favorite DQ games are IV and VIII.
You have good taste. :) I have yet to play all the way through VII, but I thoroughly enjoyed what I played and still hope for the 3DS version in English. I really like 4-8 a lot a lot a lot. Although I doubt I'd ever play IV again. (That's a lie. If they made a new version, I'd play it again.)

That's one of my favorite games of all time, though perhaps for nostalgic reasons mostly. :) I couldn't stand the hideous 3D of the DS version, though. Not their fault, just wasn't the system's strong suit. I really like the PSP version, although "The After Years" is not brilliant (fun, though, like a goofy fan hack).

_______________

All this conversation (even the very interesting mention of D&D) started with a comment that there are not enough RPGs on 3DS (or in general), and I still agree. There's a lot of good stuff, but it just ain't the same.

VII is not bad, but like IX, it is very long. I was two-third through the game, but gave up due to try to meticulously leveling up every job for all the characters. Hopefully Square Enix announces that the 3DS port comes to the States.

Other than X, for obvious reasons, I have yet to play VI. I have it for the DS, so maybe I'll give it a go one day.

In the end, I favor Dragon Quest more than I do Final Fantasy, although I love FF I, IV, VI, and IX.

Me too, and did the same with IX. I spent so much time fiddling with leveling in IX that I'm sure I could have just beaten the game instead in the time I'd taken.
