I'll never understand Steam hatred.

$6 HL1 Anthology is a steal, dammit! :p
I gotta disagree...I HATE that anthology version. It is ridiculously difficult to set up, and it takes almost a full minute to log on to the stupid website every time just to play the single player game. Worst, there is no way to turn off the automatic login. Yeah, you can disconnect your ISP every time to play it, but it wont remember the settings. Just a terrible implementation.

It doesn't take much longer than 20 seconds for me, and since the game itself is that much faster with the web browser than the pre-Steam days, I don't mind it.

That and since HL2 engine games take a long time to load, a few seconds for the launcher doesn't bug me.

I got a nice haul from Big Lots today:

Darwinia (the one I was wanting the most)
Psychotoxic (crazy looking FPS, from the screenshots I love the visual design)
Neighbors from Hell: On Vacation (looks funny enough)
Space Rangers 2 (didn't know it had Starforce, but it looks awesome so I'll probably play it anyway)

Anyway, Darwinia was the one I was originally after. I've played some of it so far, and it's awesome. $3.99 is a steal. All four games were either $3.99 or $4.00.

RE: Steam, if you can ever find the classic HL1 bundle, I'd say go for that. I bought it at Fry's awhile back for $14.99 --- I know, it's not the $6 deal, but this is the version before it got glued to Steam.

Re: Neighbors from Hell, I bough that too. I actually owned the original (which the 2nd one includes), and it's a unique game. It can get boring and tacky if you play for too long at one one time, but it is ultimately fun. :)

Not to ruin your first impressions of Psychotoxic, but it was deemed abysmal by just about all reviews. I played the demo, and it was very generic. Perhaps you can try the demo first...

Of course, I know how that voice in your head says, "come on, it's only $4!!"... /looks at pile of recent Big Lots finds that I've yet to install

:)

lol yeah it's hard to say "no" to a $4 game. ^_^ Especially one that has cows in it with machine gun utters. :D

As for the reviews, there are a lot of games I really enjoyed that "professional" reviewers gave horrible marks too. One game I can think of offhand is Postal 2. I had a blast with that game.

I do appreciate the warning, though. :)

Crap is still crap, whether or not you paid $4 or $50 for it :D

I have 6 Big Lots PC games I have yet to install. Oh well, always something to look forward to.

I have a lot of pc games to play through atm... so i buy good games at my local big lots and put them up for Cag's on my list until i get the time to start playing one... I have a bunch of big lots titles on my list, i just added like 3 dollars for shipping (all prices include shipping), so if you've been having trouble finding something check it and i'll be glad to sell it to someone who will play it as opposed to it sitting in my closet until i have time to sell it.
I just went to my Biglots and they had a TON of new games, so cheap too!
Thanks for the tip. How about jotting down some of the new titles and prices to help with the master list? :)

Drome Racers - $6.00
Outlaw Chopper - $6.00
Homeworld 2 - $6.00 (This was available a year ago or longer, but in a big box. This is a regular sized box).
FlatOut - $6.00

I also bought Half-Life Athology although I have the games already on Steam :x
I also bought Half-Life Athology although I have the games already on Steam :x
Does the HLA package even give you any media? The box was so light that I assumed it just contained a key for downloadng it from Steam.

Wikipedia says...

In 2005, Half-Life 1: Anthology was released, containing Steam-only versions of the following games on a single DVD:

* Half-Life
* Half-Life: Opposing Force
* Half-Life: Blue Shift
* Team Fortress Classic
So there's your answer. :)

The Big Lots nearest my house didn't have HLA, but I'm going to have to keep an eye out for it now.
So there's your answer. :)
I sometimes forget how detailed people get with this stuff on Wikipedia. Thanks!
I sometimes forget how detailed people get with this stuff on Wikipedia. Thanks!
Which Big Lots are you finding this stuff at, by chance?

Not much of an addition, but I saw a few copies of Ice Age 2: The Meltdown for $6.00 today. If you're buying for kids, it's probably not a bad game. :)

No luck finding Half-Life Anthology (I want that game so badly, but none of the Big Lots stores here seem to have it  ), but I did see another Pyschonauts, two copies of Darwinia, and a Space Rangers 2, which I passed on because of lack of time and fear of Starforce.

It took a ridiculous amount of work to crack my copy of SR2 to play without Starforce, involving me downloading a completely different SR2 warez thing and overlapping what files I could with my complete version. All to learn that since my card can't do DX9, I don't get the land battles period. So, in essence, I have a dull and tedious space-trading sim where I can run all the fetch quests I want but EVERYONE IN THE GALAXY is better at combat than me. Boring. Tedious. I don't see the praise for it to be honest.

Darwinia is worth it though, but is slow to start, so investigate it on your own. But it is definitely worth a purchase, so go in expecting a good time.

I've already got a copy of Darwinia I haven't installed yet. Thanks for the advice, though. :)

I wonder if I should offer a copy of one of those three games (Pyschonauts, Darwinia, or SR2) as barter for Half-Life Anthology? :whistle2:k
I wonder if I should offer a copy of one of those three games (Pyschonauts, Darwinia, or SR2) as barter for Half-Life Anthology? :whistle2:k
Sending a PM now. I was there yesterday and they had an HLA. I've been looking for Psychonauts everywhere!

Oh, and I second the Darwinia statement...very good game, worthy of purchase. The Big Lots near me had about 6-7 copies left yesterday if anyone is still having trouble finding it.

Yeah, I regret ever buying SR2 because of the StarForce crap. Next time I buy a PC game, I'll return SR2 under that receipt since Big Lots only prints "PC game".

What's the big negative to Starforce? I bought SR2 and got the SF driver update from their website so I could play on vista, and the game is playing great. What's the problem?
What's the big negative to Starforce? I bought SR2 and got the SF driver update from their website so I could play on vista, and the game is playing great. What's the problem?
Starforce screws with your drivers. Apparently, it's not much of an issue unless you try to burn DVDs (be they legal, as in home movies, or otherwise). Then, it starts causing issues.

I've heard stories of Starforce forcing reformats and reinstalls of Windows. I guess it doesn't cause everybody issues, but since it can be ultra-destructive when it does, I'm not willing to take the chance for four bucks.
Is it possible to install game WITHOUT installing starforce?
Starforce only installs when you run the game. You can install the game just fine, but running the game will SF you up. The No-CDs from gamecopyworld do not seem to remove the Starforce requirement, and I'm not sharing my method because I don't know what the hell is so special on my end that actually removes the Starforce.

Nice... maybe... just maybe... one day I can learn of your method!!! :)

In other news, Big Lots in my area has not had new inventory in awhile. so boring!! :(

In fairness I've heard later versions of Starforce are less instrustive and they are now more upfront with providing uninstallers for all their stuff. Although they cant be uninstalled while playing the game, I believe. the stuff was originally written like a virus, though. I read about a lot of horror stories.

I saw a "new old" assortment at my BL here in Richmond...all $6.00 even...

Homeworld 2
Jurassic Park Dino Defender
Half Life 1 Anthology

crap I forgot the other titles...

Homeworld 2 was supposed to be pretty awesome, but most of the assortment has already been seen at BL before.

Homeworld 2 is one of the best space combat RTS's ever made. Hopefully my BL has a copy in stock

Yeah, that change won't retroactively fix the StarForce on an old SR2 game in some Big Lots.

p.s. I saw several copies of Dark Age of Camelot Platinum Edition at my BL.

Wow, had no clue Homeworld 2 was showing up at Big Lots now... just saw it was made by Relic, so I think I will check it out.

Homeworld 2 looks it got Relic started making the awesome RTS's of today - building squardon's instead of single units, less micromanaging and more action.

In all honesty, I thought Homeworld 1 was a better game - better storyline and micromanagement capabilities for fighters and whatnot. But for $6, it's definetely worth it.

Homeworld 2 sure does look pretty, too.

just thought i'd let you all know the store i work at received like 500 anime dvds this week for $3 each. Cowboy Bebop, Wolf's Rain, DBZ, Lupin and others.

Picked up a few PC games at the closest BL over the weekend. I only bought these 3 for $6 a piece:

Law & Order: Criminal Intent
Obscure
SWAT 4: The Stetchkov Syndicate (Expansion, requires full SWAT 4)

Also saw, but did not pick up, some other stuff I didn't notice on the list:

$6
Flatout and Flatout 2
Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory

If anyone has gotten a copy of either the original SWAT 4 or the gold edition (original + expansion), please contact me for a purchase/trade.

Maybe not but you can download the updated Starforce driver from the official Starforce site, which WILL fix it. (Also, they have one that works under Vista)

Thanks for the tip. Can you remember any other titles? Any actual full length movies?

Also, saw Sin Episode 1 and Warpath for $4.00 each today.

I can confirm most of the ones mentioned on the thread recently. But as a correction, it's Dark Age of Camelot: Epic Edition (not platnium) which has the original game + all 6 expansions. $6. There is a one month free trial like most MMOs.

Saw a few copies of SWAT4 and the expansion... Right after I bought the Gold Edition off amazon! Doh!

DMZ: North Korea - $6

Also- Prepare yourselves...

LAWNMOWER RACING MANIA 2007 - $6!!!

Picked up Flatout, Flatout 2, and Homeworld 2 today.

Flatout 2 only included the 5 discs and Flatout 1 included the discs and the user manual. Am I to assume neither one of these requires a serial number?

I'm momentarily stuck with a junk laptop. Sold my PC components on Ebay (sensing a price crash was imminent at any moment on my 4 year old parts) and am slowly cheapassing my way to a new PC (Probably waiting till July 22nd model intros to complete it). So I've got no way to actually test these.

Picked up the SWAT 4 expansion and Darwinia in the BL at Burlington IA. Saw they also had SWAT 4 itself, Auto Assault for $4 (Tempted, but it'd only be a month so eh), Flatout 1 and/or 2 (Didn't pay enough attention), various copies of SR2 (Which I enjoy even with Starforce), Homeworld 2 and Sin episode 1 and the HL1 pack.

Kinda bummed they didn't have the DAoC pack since I'd been thinking about getting into it again, or Evil Genius, or Beyond Divinity, or Kohan 2, or The Political Machine, or Silent Storm, but what the hell. Can't complain with what I found. Just wish I was in that neck of the woods more often so I could check 'em out, they get some pretty good stuff sometimes. Also bummed out that they didn't have the green tea bags I like.

I grabbed the Directors Cut of Blade Runner for $4.99. It's in the half-assed cardboard/plastic hybrid DVD case, but the movie plays in standard or widescreen so I reckon it's worth $5. Assuming you can stand seeing Rutger Hauer sweat for two hours.

Also I noticed the refurbished Philips 32" LCDs were down to $599. Model 32PF5321D/37B. According to what I've read, they had some bad video boards in the early models with screen failures and some software oddities. Hopefully the refurbished models have been repaired and updated. At any rate, most reviews I've read are positive...supposedly it has a great picture for TV and pretty good for gaming too (as far as LCDs go). The only downside I saw was the lack of an internal ATSC tuner, so you'd have to pick one up to get HDTV signals.

Thanks for the tip on Bladerunner.

Oh, and I DID go to BL the other day, but they had not replenished their stock --- did not find Flatout2, Sin, or anything new.

Sin Ep 1 is a bargain at twice the price. Good shooter fun. Ain't the best, but it is definitely worth a buy.

And I've never seen Evil Genius or Silent Storm at BL. I'm sure some BL somewhere had them briefly, though...

Political Machine is merely uncommon as far as BL games go. Would've been a lot easier to find a year ago.
