Biggest CAG Shopping News 2008

Goodbye Circuit City. Your gift card promos were useless when you didn't have the advertised games in stock, and liquidation was a joke. Thanks for nothing but the good news that you're gone.

It was a tie for me, but I went with Circuit City going out of business. What really pissed me off though is my idiotic Governor (David Paterson of New York) adding sales tax for all online orders. That means I now have to pay sales tax for Amazon orders. Paterson now wants to add another 4% tax for online downloads (which is being called the "porn tax", but I think it would apply to stuff like Xbox Live Arcade and Wii Shop Channel games too).

Circuit City. they just opened a new store in my area over the summer and were in middle of building another when the bottom fell out...

All of those are good ones but I voted for the Economic Recession since it is affecting my family and me most. My mom got laid off, my sister's job is closing in April so she'll be laid off, and I graduate in May so I can no longer work on campus which means I will be forced to quit. Times are not looking good. All of this stress is becoming overwhelming.

Circuit City. I always thought they would be around to compete with Best Buy. Now what other retail electronics store other than Best Buy is there(that sells computers, etc. as well as game consoles).

Because I don't care to pay for Prime nor to try to find $25 worth of stuff to buy at a time, I'd rather pay tax to buy from Best Buy and get some RZ points. Sad to see that that's only one of two positive nominees.

My vote goes to Amazon dropping their price guarantee.

Definitely the recession for me. I have been unemployed since August 22nd which has completely killed my game buying.

It has to be the CC closing down. How many people lost their jobs because of this? And even though it sucked, I really didn't see this coming.

While the economic recession sucks, it didn't exactly surprise me. Circuit City closing ALL their stores did surprise me though and has my vote.
Wasn't the ultimate fail of CC in January of 2009?
Yes, that is why I'm a bit surprised it was included as a 2008 shopping news story. Sure they closed down a few locations in 2008, and they were struggling through most of the year, but it wasn't until mid January 2009 when they announced all stores will be closing. To me, that's a 2009 shopping news story.
