The laserdisc arcade game Cliffhanger is my absolute favorite game. Embarrassingly, this stems from nostalgia, but nearly 30 years it resonates with me. I grew up in the 8-bit heyday, when "fun" was paying 25 cents a pop to command a poorly-rendered chef whose goal it was to walk over parts of a ing hamburger while fending off eggs and sausages with salt. So when laserdisc games came along, the whole world changed. This was akin to transporting a copy of "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" to a 1933 movie theatre; sure, the movie is blah, but the playing field has completely changed. Well, that's exactly what happened with laserdsic games, and Cliffhanger was legitimately fun and cool. You commanded a side-burned agent who fought grenade-wielding ninjas, climbed a clock tower to rescue your girl, and were hung in the gallows when you met your end. We had a cabinet at my local roller rink (hey, I'm 33 - that's what we did before cable TV), and as much as I loved roller skating, when Cliffhanger showed up to the left of the men's room, that's where I spent my skate money. I'm sure I lost friends playing that thing. Awesome game, and at least for me, my favorite.
