[customspoiler=Basic FAQ]
-Basic Info/Overview
For those that don't know Club Nintendo is Nintendo's loyalty program of sorts. When you buy a Nintendo Console/Handheld, or a Nintendo published game, you get a pin that you can enter online to earn points. These points can then be redeemed for games, accesories, and collectable items. If you earn enough points in a Club year (300 for gold and 600 for platinum, which each have their own reward), you also receive a free bonus only available to a select few. You can read the full list of eligible titles, as well as their point value, here.

-How do I get coins for digital purchases?
In order to earn coins on any digital games you purchase on Wii/WiiU/3DS/DSi, you will first need to link you Club Nintendo account to your system. Instruction for doing so can be found here.

-Can I play the Wii games on my Wii-U?
Yes, but as of now, only in Wii mode. Native Wii U support might be added later on, but will most likely require the typical $1-$1.50 fee to transfer over.

-How do I play Wii games on Wii U
You will need to enter Wii mode on your Wii U. Instructions on doing so can be found http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/systems/wiiu/en_na/features_wii_menu.jsp?menu=wii_shop&submenu=wup-wiishop-ht-redeem-code"]here.

- If I don't spend coins for the entire year long period, do they carry over?
Yes, you can keep your coins past the Club Nintendo year they are redeemed in. However they only count toward gold or platinum status for the Nintendo year (june 31st-july 1st) they are redeemed in. After two years old points do expire, so make sure to spend them before then. You can check Coin balance information while, logged in, at the top of the page.

- Is there a list of previous rewards for people who accumulated a lot of coins? Similar to Square Enix's Ultimate Tier?
The extra rewards for Club Nintendo are for those that accumulate enough points to hit Gold or Platinum status (300 and 600 points, respectively). If you reach the required number of points in a year, Nintendo will automatically send you your reward, with no cost to you or your points.

- Does the list of eligible games update as the games come out or on some sort of schedule?
The list will be updated before the game comes out, do to things like Pre-Purchase bonus points. Any game you can buy, should already be on the list and able to redeem.

- When do they typically announce the prizes for Gold and Platinum?
Generally at the end of a Club Nintendo year, but don't expect it anytime soon. Usually it will take at least several months for them to ship it out.

- Is there anyway to enter multiple copies of the same game or device?
They have an option in the settings to make your account a family account, which means it can have sub-accounts that allows you to register multiple copies of games. The coins from all the sub-accounts all end up in the same main account coin collection.

- How does the site show what balance of coins you have to spend versus your total towards Gold/Platinum?
At the top right of the screen you can see the coin counter. The big number is your total coin amount, and the bar underneath is your progress to gold or platinum status. The number needed to advance is displayed directly above said bar. Redeeming your coins does not affect this counter, as it is only reset at the end of the year.

- How can I tell if a code is valid without redeeming it?
If you want to check if a code has already been registered, without registering it yourself, all you need to do is try entering the code while you are logged out. It will tell you the name of the game, as well as how many points it is worth, without activating it.[/customspoiler]

Let me know if I missed anything or if something breaks!

Last year was my 1st year joining club nintendo and i did reach platinum. dissappointed on the reward. I chose the cards. Now im contemplating if i want to aim for platinum this year or just stay gold. They should give those that reach platinum the gold reward plus something else or a better reward like that figurine before.
Can't decide if I should register my XL or wait and use it for next year. I really want Kid Icarus but I already platted this year and my coin supply is usually pretty tight. :(
Unless you're going to use the XL code for the free game promotion going on right now, you should probably just save it for next years platinum. Kid Icarus is only a couple of dollars anyway.

Thanks for clearing things up guys. Looks like I might be able to get to Platinum if the rate I'm getting coins at continues. Got a couple questions again if someone doesn't mind.

They announce the prize usually at the end of the club nintendo year. So, like, the week of July 1. You'll usually receive that award around December. At least that is how long it usually took me to get mine.

They have an option in the settings to make your account a family account, which means it can have sub-accounts that allows you to register multiple copies of games. The coins from all the sub-accounts all end up in the same main account coin collection.

I'm not sure what your third question means. There's only one coin balance and its the one you see at the top of the club nintendo page. If you're asking if, say, you have 600 coins (platinum status), and you spend 300, does that drop you to gold, then no. Once you reach gold or platinum, you've reached that for the year. You can spend all your coins and you'll still be gold or platinum until the club nintendo year ends, and you'll get your reward.
I've never had any coins expire, so I assumed they were valid forever. Sorry for the misinformation, I'll make sure to double check my answers from now on:whistle2:(
They used to last forever but nintendo changed the rules a yearnor two ago
There's a great thread in the Nintendo section to discuss the ins and outs of Club Nintendo. http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=324119
yes, this has been pointed out to me. It's become apparent though that many CAGs don't regularly visit the sub forums, and as such might miss some of the deals offered. So this is more an extension than a replacement of that thread, for those that want it;)

I really doubt it will be Luigi related because 2011 was Zelda and there was nothing Zelda related. I don't think they've ever done anything to go with an anniversary/year.

They DEFINITELY need to step it up after last year though. I'm still in disbelief anybody at Nintendo actually the cards were a good enough idea to make them the "top" gift. Sure "a lot" of people may play cards but it's still a pretty niche hobby and even so if I did play cards I couldn't imagine using a collector's set like that with my friends. Yes they were well built and yes they looked cool, but they were still cards. Now a Nintendo CARD-GAME would have at least been a little cooler.

They should give away a collectors editon wii / wii U remote or something to customize your 3DS/XL.. All the platinum prizes mentioned here just seem so lame. I'd rather just pick a game from the Gold Line up.. I'm 120 points from platinum and really debating on whether or not to use the games I have to get there. Even if they had a game or a couple games exclusive to platinum only people I would do it.. not really interested in anything physical unless it will actually be worth collecting. All these other prizes are on ebay for $20.

2012 was Kirby and they did the circular cards, medal and a few other things we didn't get. However, it didn't get top tier freebie.

The pin / button collection in Japan was in honor of Mario's 25th anniversary. The main difference was that 1 pin said happy 25th. They also had a handkerchief set, not that it matters.

As I've explained SEVERAL times, I think the crappy prizes last year were due to the number of people that hit platinum status last year. It honestly wasn't that hard (compared to the usual rate), since you had the Ambassador program.

3DS - 160
20 free games - 200 (360 or gold)
excitebike / pokemon - 20 (380)
linking your system to club nintendo - like 40 (420)

So really all you needed was 180 coins and you could platinum. Since most people who bought a 3DS wanted Nintendo titles, there was Super Mario 3D Land (like 50 or 470), Zelda (like 50 or 520) and plenty of other games to get you the remaining 80 points.
America usually gets the short end of the stick when it comes to prizes and such. So far NoE and NoJ have gotten better rewards, and rewards that we've got that have gotten upgrades.

Plastic case for their Mario Figurine

http://www.genkivideogames.com/imagesnew/supamarioguzuback.jpg

And NoE got some pretty cool Mario Kart trophies.

I blame Reggie. :[

2012 was Kirby and they did the circular cards, medal...
We actually did get the medal, the thing was it was sold out within an hour or so. I managed to snag one luckily, but I think that was the only Kirby reward they had on Club Nintendo.

Awesome deal, never registered the XL I traded the original 3DS in for last year and ended up getting the free game. Thanks op!

Finally had enough points to order the Classic Super Mario T-Shirt

It sold out in like 9 hours... I know this sounds like semantics, but it wasn't anywhere near that popular. Please note, this figure comes AFTER it was posted on CAG, so it might have been a little longer than that. In either case, there was ample time. Also there were the circular cards I mentioned. They were raffled off to a few (forget the exact number) people that registered the Collection by a certain date.

I've got a couple questions for you guys/gals.

1. Can you get both a Gold and Platinum rewards? Or is it just one or the other? (If I get Metroid 2 now will I not be able to get the poster set at platinum?)

2. Have they ever had any decent game sales in there featured game offers? Or is it always four not so great games for 150 coins each?

One or the other.

Some are awful, some are okay, some are good and once in a while they're amazing. Like I saw Smash Bros (N64) offered once.

I don't know man, if this thread is supposed to be about any deals/specials with the rewards program, that's fine but to discuss the ins and outs of the club seems to make this thread redundant and not serve its intended purpose.

That can be said of several other threads, like the PSN deal thread.

Not only can this be said of many other threads but just look at the number of hits and replys this thread has gotten over the last week. It is educating people on club nintendo as well as giving existing information to members who havent been active for a while.

OT- I have washed my mario shirt a couple of times now (got it along with the pouch for a combined 500 coins when the 72 hour luigi sale was going on) and it definitely does run a little small. I am usually a medium in shirts but ordered a large based on eveyone elses opinion online and large was the way to go. (I even wear small with collared (mostly golf) shirts.) Also, last year was my first in CN and also my first hitting platinum, I chose the posters. I enjoy them but would much rather have something like the figurine they gave out in 2010. I am platinum again this year and hope no other games are good so I can save my remaining unredeemed points to try to hit platinum again next year.

I think points expire so you can't always hit platinum every year and get the platinum award yearly for not spending your points at all the whole time you're a club nintendo member.

actually, the points toward gold/platinum reset at the end of the CN year, so even if they didn't expire people couldn't do that

Already picked up LM2 and don't want to upgrade to an XL yet.
Can I just buy a registration code to get the free game?

I'm not sure how the bonus game redemption works.

Yes, but you will be paying a premium premium.
As in you don't like people buying codes?
As in a lot of people know about the promo and will ask more for it (I recall people claiming in the Pikachu threads a LM2 / Pokemon code was FAIRLY priced at $10 dollars) and systems are worth more coins. You figure LM 2 is like 40 coins, where as a system is 160, so... yea, two premiums.

Ahh, I see what you mean.
Well thank you for the input! :)

If anyone can help me with my question, I would be grateful!
After making an nintendo club account, I went ahead and registered my Pikachu 3DS XL in order to get the free game(s), do I have to buy one of the two games; Pokemon Mystery Dungeon or Luigi Mansion: Dark's Moon in order to get the free game out of the five that you can choose? If so I thought all you had to do was registered the 3DS and you got Luigi Mansion: Dark's Moon & one of the free games out of the five!

You got to buy DM or Pokemon. If you got both, then I am sure CAG would have exploded from people trying to score from this deal.

Thank you for answering my question, now time to buy Luigi's Mansion! :D

I highly recommend Layton as your free game of choice. The franchise is superb.

I went with Mario just because, being the proprietary Mario title, it's less likely to drop in price from the $40 MSRP or hit clearance bins. Layton was just at $20 on newegg a few weeks ago...and Art Academy/Freaky Forms are already at the $20 mark. Seemed like the logical choice CAG-wise...hehe

Can't dispute that, and I tend to agree, I've just gotten much more enjoyment/hours out of Layton than any Mario title except perhaps Mario 64.

If I didn't have OCD, I would have enjoyed Layton a lot more. With the consumable hint coins and permanently losing picarats for wrong answers, I was saving before every puzzle and reloading if I made a bad guess or calculation. I got burnt out from that at the 2nd game.
Tends to be around Noon EST, though sometimes might be an hour or so after that.
Sweet hope they add some good 3DS games. Love these 150 coin downloads.
Would love to see Donkey Kong: Original Edition available.
That would upset me, I bought Art Academy digitally just so I could get DK:OE
My money would have instead gone to a physical Paper Mario (I like to keep retail games as retail)

Games are up:

- Super Mario 64 (Wii, 200 coins)
- Super Metroid (Wii, 150 coins)
- Kirby's Pinball Land (3DS, 150 coins)
- 3D Classics: Urban Champion (3DS, 150 coins)

Can't go wrong with Super Mario 64. Super Metroid, if you have a Wii U, it'll be 30 cents from May 15th to June 13th. Kirby's Pinball Land is decent (I might get it out of nostalgia when I played it as a kid), though I've heard very "meh" reactions to Urban Champion, probably should save your coins.

Urban Champion is just awful...no one waste your coins on it please.

Updated the OP with the new games. Sorry for the delay, didn't noticed they'd changed over. Psyched about Super Metroid, as I'll finally get a chance to play it:D Weird that Super Mario 64 is 200 though, instead of 150:roll:

N64 games tend to be 200 coins while SNES and portable downloads (GB, DSiWare, 3DSware) are 150 or cheaper. I guess coin value is based on the original pricing of the games.

Ya know, now that I think about it, I think this is the 2nd time or so Urban Champions has been offered as a reward.....Still seemed like a weird choice to get a 3D Classics remake.
