This is a continuation of this previous thread. Since it reached 5,000+ posts making a new thread is easier to read through.

Post any deals you find, recommendations, requests for deals, etc. Please keep things as civil as possible. There's no such thing as a bad deal post and reviews are opinions. :)

Apple iPhone & iPod Touch games in the App store are constantly going on sale. While I originally posted games and prices in this post, it's become almost impossible to keep up with it all. Feel free to post in this topic on good deals and games you enjoy. Developers are also encouraged to join in, especially if they are running promos or sales.

If you want to check out a particular game, try the following review sites, or ask in here so fellow CAG's can assist you.

App & Game Review Sites

Important Notes:

  1. Make sure to check for periodic updates either in iTunes or on your iPod\iPhone. For each release of new firmware, there's usually a bunch of games updated right afterward.
  2. Some applications also go on sale by their authors when they reach 1 million download and similar milestones.
  3. Apps often have specials the day before, during, and after holidays, regardless if said game/app is related to the holiday.
  4. Newly released apps will often have a % or dollar amount off for a limited period of time to gain a large following quicker. While browsing the app store you can go to a particular type or genre and order according to release date. This can make finding new app discounts faster.
  5. Make sure to backup your purchases in iTunes to CD/DVD for safe keeping. You can do this by clicking File-->Library-->Backup to Disc. Then choose all purchases, applications only, and full or incremental backup. How often is up to you, but I do this monthly, or more often if I buy a lot of apps.
  6. Apps can be redownloaded without incurring an extra charge if you previously purchased it. This is good if you have a crash and forget to backup your purchases. I don't know if this is a permanent feature so backing up regularly is still important.
  7. I strongly advise not to buy iTunes Gift Cards by 3rd parties unless you know they can be trusted. Retail stores, receiving cards as gifts, etc are the best ways. There are many credit card scams, stolen cards, hacked cards going around, especially on Ebay.
  8. If you are the victim of a iTunes Card scam or get your account locked due to one not all hope is lost. Apple has been fairly lenient on these issues. Call Apple directly at 1-800-MY-APPLE, or check the iTunes Store support site. Also going to your local Apple Store to discuss it can help. The account locking is an automated process and can be reversed. This can take time so be cautious if you use gift cards from 3rd party sources.
  9. If you somehow break your iPhone or iPod Touch, you have some options. If you bought the Applecare warranty it should be covered for most items. If your Applecare ran out or you don't have one, try these sites for do it yourself replacement parts & fixes.
iFixit Touch Repair Guide ; iFixit iPhone Repair Guide ; TechRestore
  10. Using a screen protector can extend the life of your device. Most stores carry these, but they can be hard to install. The best I have personally used are made by a company called Power Support. They have both clear and anti-glare protectors. They are easier to install because the protector is a firm yet thin piece of plastic. Two come in a pack, average price I've seen is $20. They have an Ebay Store that might save you a few bucks.

Good looking on some of those recent free games
Those saying there's no risk of bricking (from jailbreaking)... you seem to be talking about iPod touches. I'm talking about an iPhone 3GS. Aren't there more risks with the iPhone, or have I been getting bad info? Also, can you revert back to normal *without* restoring? At least in the past, restoring meant losing progress in most games since that data doesn't get backed up.
The risk is no different with a touch or iphone. You can always restore if something goes wrong (ive never had anything go wrong). You can't revert from being jailbroken without wiping the phone clean. When itunes backs up your phone doesnt it save game data/progress as well? ive never paid attention as i only jailbreak when a big enough firmware update comes out and even then im usually too lazy to do it until much later.

It only backs up data for the built-in apps, the keychain, stuff like that. It doesn't back up game saves. However, games can do their own online backup, most commonly with OpenFeint, Plus+, etc, but it can be their own thing. I think the reason it doesn't backup everything is that it would make backing up take way too long.

Why would you want to revert back once you jailbreak it anyways?

Gonna wait for some reviews to see how the controls are but really tempted to pick it up right now in case it was a pricing error. No way I would have thought they'd price this at only a dollar.
I'll bite for that price and let you guys know in just a bit ...

God I used to suck at this game so bad as a kid ... and that was with a keyboard ... so we'll see how the iphone controls fare.

Hmm ... controls are ... ok ...

I'm forseeing a lot of trouble in the later levels with this game.

And as far as I can tell, there is no walk command outside of crouching and hopping forward.

The graphics look great and it has an option to immediately jump to any level, which is nice ...

But this game is hard as hell ... and the touch controls don't quite mesh well with this type of genre imo.

Grab it for the memories, but prepare for a challenge and a ton of frustration (oh and the ending is like 2 seconds long, so don't think you're suffering through all this for something amazing at the end ;) )

Ok, here are a few tips to get people started:

First of all controls:

The most important thing to know at the beginning, is pressing anywhere on screen while also pressing left or right button will make the character walk slowly. This is essential to accomplish many of the tasks. It allows you to:

Walk safely right to the edge of any platform.
Walk through spikes.
Position yourself where you need to be for various leaps and and run-ups.

Pressing "up" will standing still, will make you climb up to any ledge that happens to be directly above you. Pressing "down," if facing a ledge will make you hop off. If you want to climb down the ledge safely turn around first and then press down with your back to the ledge.

One very useful tip: as soon as you enter a new room, if you jump up in the air (while standing still) any loose tiles in that room will reveal themselves. (Be careful though, as jumping up in the air while standing under a loose tile will cause it to fall on your head.

The only thing I haven't been able to figure out so far, and actually have a feeling it may have been removed from this version, is in the original game you were able to hang off a ledge and then choose to either drop down or pull yourself back up. This was useful in a number of situations where you wanted to check what was in the screen below you without taking the risk of plummeting to your death.

General tips:

This absolutely is not a game where you can rush through. In fact, I'd strongly recommend that if you happen to be in a mood that leaves you low on patience you play something else. This game requires that you take things slowly, approach each room with extreme caution, and really think before you perform almost any action. After many, many playthroughs it's possible to rush, and in fact can be a challenge in itself to complete the game in as short a time as possible, but this is only for people who know each level intimately after many, many playthroughs.

Also, do keep in mind that this game is hardcore in a fairly extreme sense. You are expected to die many times on your first playthrough. You'll learn by restarting though, and find that making your way through parts of the level that you've already played become quicker each time.

I played through the original game on the Amiga more times than I care to remember. It was absolutely one of my favourites. It's too early for me to tell yet how this iPhone version is going to hold up in the long run but it is looking promising thus far.

Thought I might repost it here to help you guys out with the controls. I haven't played it yet but I'm downloading it now. $1 for a universal iPad port of a classic game? I have to support that! :)

Good tips ... the walking actually works pretty well, action button also works by touching anywhere on the screen. The biggest problem I see with the controls is making sure the jumps register exactly when you want them too ... I've run off a ledge a few too many times while thinking I had pressed the jump button.

For .99 cents though, I say it's worth picking up ... it's a definite improvement over the original PC version from a graphical standpoint and the combat works pretty well. The controls only really tend to fail in those times when you really need precise controls to run and jump, otherwise they hold up pretty well.

Another tip - really press down on the jump button like you're actually hitting a button ... I think it doesn't register if you just brush over it, so it has to be done with a little force ... the more I play, the more I'm liking it ... even if the controls aren't ideal.

Everyone, would it be possible to mention the game that the post is in reference to? Your post may be able to help someone other than who the post was meant for. Thx

Thanks for the heads up. Was waiting for this one to drop.

If it makes my iPhone unstable? If it causes other problems? If I want to upgrade to 4.0? I see people saying on occasion that they were jailbroken, but ended up reverting back, for any or all of these reasons.

I'm sure it depends on the "special" apps their running and what version of the software they are using.

If I had a touch, it would have been done day 1. I really don't see a need for it on my iPhone as of yet

Slay is FREE for today only (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/slay/id305324342?mt=8).
"Slay is a simple to learn game of strategy and cunning set in medieval times. The island is divided up between the six players, and you must try to capture your enemies' land and link up your own territories to create larger and stronger ones. You begin capturing land by attacking with your peasants. Once your territories become richer you can combine peasants to make stronger and stronger people (Spearmen, Knights and then Barons) who can kill weaker enemy troops, or knock down their castles. Just be careful that you don't create too many expensive men or the territory will go bankrupt!"

Decided to buy PoP too. I've only played it for a few minutes, but so far so good. Definitely helps to know how to walk (why doesn't the controls help mention it?)

I've played Prince of Persia a bit now, and it's great! Controls work quite well once you understand the walking mechanic. That makes all the difference. To repeat, press and hold anywhere on the screen and then press left or right to walk in that direction. That gets you to edges and safely through spikes. I remembered liking the game way back when and it doesn't disappoint. Only bad thing is it doesn't save state when you quit. However, you can select any level to start on from the main menu. Not ideal, but it works OK. I wish the levels were locked until you got to them, but they aren't - you can select any level, right from the start.

Dragon's Lair is about as charming as a game full of quicktime events could be. But no saves? I'm guessing the game isn't that long but portable gaming requires some sore of save system. I've even heard that any push notification will crash the app :( But for $.99 it's fun to finally experience this classic.

Dragon's Lair is only worth having for nostalgia. Pretty terrible game. The animation is great, though.

I also decided to bite on Ozone while it's 99 cents. Only played the first several tutorials, but so far it seems pretty fun.

So that makes Prince of Persia, Ragdoll Blaster 2 and Ozone today. I'm such an addict....

you gotta figure its a straight arcade port. no continuing there.

also, once you learn what to do at each screen, you can beat the game in about 15 minutes

Just push the Home button and it saves your progress. There is no hard save. I'm just at the last part and it was fun for $1.
