Thx roland, the PS2 is really a software beast. :D xD

Because you mentioned this, could you post January totals for the other systems too? =)
You need to wait till April for the first numbers, NPD only provides monthly data and this will be published in the mid of April. ;)
Ah, ok. Thanks. I was not sure how often NPD provides data for game sales. VGchartz had some sales data out for Madworld so I thought that some information had been released. I guess VGchartz just made up the numbers.

VGChartz gets estimates from retailers and has to estimate Wal-Mart's data because they don't do handouts to either VGC or NPD. There numbers are always usually off but they also estimate Mexico and Canada numbers so It's not just USA. They also do Europe and Japan, but re-do their Japan numbers once media create releases numbers.

Madworld numbers are not up on VGC till later this week. It's expected to do 40k in It's first week... maybe a little more.

Forget VGC, they have nearly zero market coverage, everyone can estimate some numbers like them.

NPD has a market coverage of 65% (that means that they get 65% of the actual data), the remaining 35% are getting extrapolated, but they do this job since 1991.

GfK/ChartTrack has a market coverage of 95% - 98% in the UK (another example) or 90% in Australia.

@roland:
Could you post GT Pro Series [Wii] and Dead Rising [360] numbers? =)

With the announcement of Another Code R (Trace Memory 2) in Europe for the Wii, along with Hotel Dusk's 155k sales figure, I'm wondering how the original Trace Memory (DS) fared in the US. Judging by the amount of unsold copies I saw on shelves during its retail cycle, I doubt that it will bode well for the sequel's chances.

Hopefully I'll get some updated numbers next week, though it is the week of GDC in San Francisco, and I imagine most people (myself included) will be tough to find that week.
Wow, I was expecting better numbers from the PS2 version. Did they both release at the same time?
Yeah, they both released at the same time, and the PS2 version is more than $10 cheaper than the Wii. I just talked to a rather low-end publisher today, and even they said they thing the PS2 is dead at this point.

Which is funny considering the PS2 sold more software units in January than the PS3 did. Of course, that's spread out over 1,800 games vs. the 260 on PS3.

A few more games, if you haven't left for GDC, yet. :)

360 Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter 1/2
360 Rainbow Six Vegas 2
PS3 Rainbow Six Vegas 2
360 Crackdown
360 Viva Pinata 1/2/Party Animals
NDS Viva Pinata: Pocket Paradise

It's too bad that Sony never dropped the price to $99 in the U.S. I can understand it, as they were trying to offset the PS3 losses. However, I think the PS2 could've done pretty well this year, if they had dropped its price last Fall.

Sure, not leaving for GDC until next Wednesday. Then Vegas for the weekend for my fantasy baseball league's annual draft, then back to LA to submit Firefighter to Nintendo. I'll find time to sleep somewhere I suppose.

360 Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter 1 - 1.21M
360 Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter 2 - 738k [released it way too soon]
360 Rainbow Six Vegas 2 - 1.80M

360 Crackdown - 751k [sequel please!]
360 Viva Pinata 1 - 406k
360 Viva Pinata 2 - 80k
360 Viva Pinata Party Animals - 112k
NDS Viva Pinata: Pocket Paradise - 79k

At least you can say Microsoft gave VP a legit chance to succeed.

I actually thought the PS2 was at $99...insane that it isn't because yeah, I think they'd make a killing on it right about now.

Sorry to see RSV, GRAW, and VP had horrible sales follow-ups, but honestly each sequel, at least in publicity, looked more like expansion packs than true sequels. All were good games, but just too soon (as said) after the originals, and not with enough (at least touted) to make them feel necessary to all but the die hard fans. It's a shame, because all three are worthy franchises.

Is that just letting NOA Treehouse do a final check out of it or is it something more complex?

If they dropped it in April, I think it would still get some uptick, but it's been selling so low since last November that it may be too late to give it a full second (third? fourth?) wind.

It's actually our first (and hopefully final) lot-check submission. They test all the technical requirements, make sure the game isn't buggy, etc. Once it's approved, it's off to the manufacturers.

Just double-checked the 360 Vegas 2 numbers, and it's 71k for the CE, and 1.01M for the regular version. So yup, I mixed my 0 and 8 around. Good catch.

Was WWE Smackdown Vs Raw 2009 Regular and PS3 CE already listed (didn't find it on search)?

Too early for Halo Wars?

I think we have to wait a month or so for the update. I'm not even sure if the February numbers have been released.

Speaking of which, do we have numbers for Street Fighter IV? And more specifically, the CE versions vs. the standards. The CE's were in really high demand this time around, it seemed.

EDIT: Well, the base numbers of the standard and CE's combined were announced it seems, but it's gotten me curious as to how other fighters this gen have fared, so here's the list I'm asking for, por favor.

Street Fighter IV (Standard)
Street Fighter IV (Collector's)
Dead or Alive 4
Virtua Fighter 5

Seems like these numbers were grabbed last month:
Soul Calibur IV - 500k (360) 353k (PS3) [includes CE]
HOTD Overkill:

"The light gun game from Sega and U.K.-based Headstrong Games sold 45K units during the month of February, NPD told Edge. The game launched February 10.
NPD analyst Anita Frazier said it landed around the 50th spot in the top-100 SKUs for the month in unit sales."

http://www.edge-online.com/news/house-dead-overkill-sells-45k
As a reminder, as the article says, HOTD Overkill was released on February 10th, making this only around two weeks of sales data, taking common distribution time into account.

The release date is something that folks with requests should consider when forming their requests (Unless the NPD already factors this in); not only was February a short month, but most of the games were released towards the middle and the end, giving them very short selling periods for last month's data. HOTD, Retro Game Challenge, Deadly Creatures released on the 10th, giving them two weeks; Dragon Quest V on the 16th, two weeks; Dead Rising released on the 24th, giving it less than a week. So really, you'd have more reliable data by waiting for March's numbers for those games if you want to see how the game fared in the time period of a month.
not only was February a short month,
NPD follows a 4-4-5 week pattern. January/February are four weeks. March is five weeks. April/May are four weeks. June is five weeks. etc. It does not attempt to follow the calendar month. By complete coincidence, February happened to cover the dates of Feb 1-28, but that is only because the four week period beginning on a Sunday and ending on a Saturday happened to match those dates. The March period will go from March 1 - April 4, for example.

Just wanted to clear that up. :)

Overkill was out for ~19 days so that's not really an excuse. Whether because of price, length or whatever people in the US just don't like light gun games as much as in the UK.

The game will still sell over a million WW though.

That's exactly what I was thinking as well.

That was me. I compiled a list of the new stuff and posted it in a penny-arcade thread, then it got reposted to the PA spinoff, platformers, then back to gaf and here again.

One big echo chamber.

My guess is because it was stocked and sold at some major retailers. Typically, IIRC, most Atlus games are only sold at game specialty stores. I bought one (albeit on clearance) and it's only the second Atlus game I've ever bought (both on clearance at CC).

Not directly, but they are estimated for. Wal-Mart used to report numbers to NPD (pre-2002, I think), and NPD has other tracking relations with Wal-Mart. Therefore, they can probably get a decent idea of Wal-Mart's overall marketshare. However, Wal-Mart numbers are only estimated for currently.
