MMA (UFC, Strikeforce, Bellator, Invicta, etc.) Discussion Thread -- Version II

Fitch/Maia sounds like a good matchup to make, sense both are grapplers and Maia will probably have the advantage on the feet actually. Not that it would stay on the feet though.

It does sound like a good match up.Almost "too good" in a way. This might sound crazy but I think last night was finally the night where it seemed like Fitch might be back in title contention(with Dana) again after putting on that display.

Well I doubt he is an all-star in Dana's book but I think even if he was, it would be unfair for Fitch to be in a higher ranking then Maia. Same...maybe...but Fitch shouldn't be closer to a title shot then Maia, especially because Maia's putting on good fights even moreso now.

Except for the fact that Fitch was promised a title shot before the Nick Diaz/Carlos Condit nonsense ever started. Yeah, he's had that freak KO loss against Hendricks since then, but the guy's record since his last fight against GSP is phenomenal. Any other fighter fights 3 times and gets another title shot. Fitch won 5 straight before being put on hold, and is 6-1-1 since he lost to GSP. He's earned it as much as anybody. Maia has had one impressive fight at 170. I don't doubt that he would have beaten Kim, but you can't count that one when it ended due to a freak injury. If Dana wants to have Fitch fight Maia for a title shot, I think that would be a good match up. But acting like Maia just has an automatic bid because of one win is crazy.

No I don't think Maia is ranked HIGHER than Fitch, but I wouldn't necessarily say Fitch is significantly ahead of Maia in the WW rankings either. Personally I think a matchup between the two makes the most sense. Without them fighting each other, who does Fitch and Maia fight?

They are both nearing title contention because of the relative weakness of the division. Most guys at WW have already been beaten up by GSP or wouldn't have even a small chance to win, so nobody even bothers.

And Dana Previously said that Sonnen wouldn't be able to talk himself into a title shot at Light Heavyweight lol.Sonnen's mouth is that good and he still hasn't even re-debuted yet at LHW.

Chael Sonnen was made for reality TV. He could easily make TUF into the Chael Sonnen Variety Hour Presented by Nexersys.

I think giving Chael an immediate title shot is bullshit. Don't get me wrong I like Chael, but he doesn't deserve the shot at all. His last fight was a title shot in a lower weight division for crying out loud and he lost.

What happened to Henderson's title shot? Machida's? Hell, even Glover and Gus deserve a title shot more than Chael. I guess the UFC is desperate for ratings.

Definitely agree and also really like your avatar.

I agree with your premise. But what we don't know is if Henderson or Machida were offered the chance of coaching against Jones. Machida most likely would have turned it down since that's what he does. Henderson was a coach in the past, and maybe wouldn't want to go through it again. Who knows. It is crazy that Chael just got to jump to the front of the line, but the same thing was going to happen with Frankie Edgar...he was going to get an immediate title shot at Featherweight due to injury.

And Dana changes his mind about #1 contender status all the time (see the Jon Fitch discussion from earlier). What this should clear room for is a fight between Machida and Henderson for the NEXT title shot though....which is what some people thought might happen anyway. I just think Chael is crazy if he thinks he can do better against Jon Jones than he did against Anderson Silva. It just doesn't make any sense. Oh well. At least it will be entertaining.

I was going to say I like the choosing of Sonnen only because Jones can shut the haters up but really haters gonna hate. It definitely should have went to people more deserving. With that said though Chael probably has a chance.

I hear that DT. Normally Jones likes to take his opponent apart and when they're fairly broken and tired he goes for the kill. With Sonnen, I just want Jones to clobber him in the first round and make it look like Sonnen never deserved the shot in the first place. I'm sick of Sonnen and his carnival barker ways to get him whatever he wants. He's turning the sport into professional wrestling.

Ratings for TUF. Henderson and Machida make good fights with Jones and have more claim to a title shot but Sonnen is going to make this a huge fight and will be talking it up for 3 months. Nobody likes Jones, 70% of people don't like Sonnen, they are banking that people will watch both of them argue for months.

Edit : Nvm was pretty much said up there ^ lol.

I'm thinking this doesn't have as much to do with finding a worthy contender as opposed to finding a way to bring ratings on TUF for FX.The ratings keep getting worse and worse hitting a new low almost every week and theres still half of the season to go I think.TUF on FX on Fridays clearly isn't working and this seems like a last ditch attempt to throw a bandaid on to keep it alive for a while longer.

I see Lyoto's argument here, and it is valid, but it does feel odd seeing Lyoto talk like this when he turned down Jones 8 days in advance and 1 month in advance.I would have liked to seen Henderson get the title shot he had earned back especially with his age and Machida is sure to be a tough fight and may lose to him.

On the good side of things. It was announced today during the Media Conference that TUF is moving off Fridays and to a weekday and will be announced in 30-45 more days about it.

Dan Henderson said something funny on his twitter to Dana White

I guess I should just quit training to win fights and to be exciting for the fans and just go to shit talking school. @danawhite

Henderson and Machida should be pissed about losing out on their title shots. They both were lined up first but now neither are going to get their shot? Both will have to risk their ranking against somebody else in the time being and it is just a bad situation to be in now for those guys. If they lose, they lose any chance of a title shot!

An even bigger LOL is Sonnen getting his title shot not only coming off a loss but in a division he has never fought in. Also, does this mean his fight with Griffin is off or is it still on because obviously Sonnen isn't going to lose? That was easy money in that fight...

Its kind of sad to still hear about fighter pay when Jon Fitch probably the 2nd best welterweight in the last 5 years with a record of 14-2-1 in the UFC was going to have to get a real job if he lost his last fight.Historically will probably be refereed to as the 3rd best welterweight of all time up to this point after GSP and Hughes.Koscheck doesn't seem to be hurting with his big house and all those cars and even his own plane,I'm guessing hes gotten a percentage deal for quite a few fights.

Matt Riddle and Francisco Rivera retroactively suspended 90 days from 7/21 for banned substances. Riddle - weed, Rivera - OTC stimulant.

No big deal on either one but failed drug tests are never something that anybody wants to see. Also, Carwin and Nelson got randomly drug tested today.

So Phil Davis is fighting Forest Griffin. Not a bad fight. Good win for Davis if he can survive Griffin's guard, since even Griffin would have a shot to outstrike Davis.

I don't understand the first part of that sentence ("you sound a little like...") but I agree Davis is a better fight for Griffin rather than Sonnen. That said, he will probably be the underdog against Davis too.

I actually think Davis is the tougher fight. At least against Sonnen he'll have more of a shot of exploiting Sonnen's submission defense.Davis has more of a complete ground game having the wrestling that everyone already knows about but some good submission offense/defense to go along with it.Just seems like if I had to choose who it would be worse to be in Griffin's guard,I think I would choose it being worse for Sonnen. Both Davis and Sonnen seem like they would want it take it to the ground and I'd probably give Forrest the edge against both in the stand up area.

Update: Riddle and Rivera's wins at UFC 149 were overturned to NC.

Wow, an overturned win due to weed. That sucks lol. Clearly, it was enhancing his performance, haha.

As for Rivera, watch, we'll find out it was Cialis or something, lol.

Great job Maklershed.Free stuff is always cool.I see theres one prize still left, hoping I can try for it :p.

Edit: And its over and I couldn't guess the correct answer :(.Would be pretty nice to say I own a Saku t-shirt.

Jeff Blatnick has passed away.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2012/mma/10/24/jeff-blatnick-obit/index.html

For those unfamiliar, aside from overcoming cancer in '82 and winning a gold medal in Greco-Roman in '84, he was on commentary for the early UFCs and was a major name that pushed back against those in goverment who wanted MMA outlawed around that time.

On a personal scale, he was one of the coaches at a wrestling camp I went to in both 1994 and 1995. I remember in '95 I'd track him down during downtime and ask him stuff about UFC...thankfully nothing horribly embarassing, mostly stuff about who he thinks would beat who, etc. I'm sure at some point a 15 year old kid bothering him about his other job after a long workout got kind of annoying, but he was always more than willing to talk to me for as long as I wanted. That was my favorite memory from a camp that had Tom Erickson (who was an asshole), Kurt Angle (pre gold medal), and Mark Kerr, among others.

RIP.

The old "legs are too old to wrestle" thing? It happens all the time in MMA. Guys get older (usually over 30) and they stop wrestling entirely.

That stoppage was abysmal and the eye poke = TKO for Good on the same card was poor as well.

As far as GSP, he is a naturally...in shape guy. He isn't small for WW and I've seen him next to LHWs looking right in place before so it doesn't surprise me anymore when I see him looking pretty built.

Wow. That stoppage was pretty damn pathetic. Guys's getting beat to death and the ref just puts his hands on his knees and continues watching. He could have probably pulled out a gun, shot the guy and the ref still wouldn't have stepped in any sooner.

Note to referee: Ragdoll Arms =/= Intelligent Defense

Jesus fucking Christ. 11 unprotected punches before a stoppage. Ref could have easily stopped the carnage 6 to 8 punches sooner without argument.

So UFC on Fox 6 in Chicago on Jan 26 is shaping up to be a good card.

Demetrius Johnson Vs. John Dodson for the Flyweight Title
Anthony Pettis Vs. Donald Cerrone
Rampage Jackson Vs. Glover Teixeira

Definitely going to attend this event. I went to UFC on Fox 2 last January in Chicago and it was a blast!

Also, Anderson Silva is going to attend UFC 154 and could possibly call out Georges St-Pierre if he beats Condit

http://camelclutchblog.com/anderson-silva-to-challenge-gsp-at-ufc-154/

The Anderson Silva vs. Georges St-Pierre fight talk is about to take a really interesting twist. According to Silva’s management, the often reclusive Silva will be in Montreal for GSP’s next fight vs. Carlos Condit and could make his presence known if GSP can pull out the win.

Fighters attending UFC events is not often a big news story in MMA circles…unless the fighter is Anderson Silva. Silva on the other hand presents a story. Silva is known as a fighter who rarely attends UFC events so just the fact that the Spider will be in Montreal has already gotten people talking.
Silva’s manager Jorge Guimaraes broke the news on UFC Tonight. Guimaraes told UFC Tonight that Silva will be sitting ringside for GSP’s big comeback. This has already led to widespread reports that Silva will call out GSP should St-Pierre be victorious, laying down the grand challenge live in GSP’s home city on pay per view.

Silva has worked diligently at getting this GSP Superfight. Silva has openly campaigned in the media for well over a year now about a potential St-Pierre fight. The UFC reportedly are on board and ready to make the fight. Unfortunately GSP remains the lone holdout and appears to be annoyed every time the question is asked.

Silva’s challenge to GSP has presented arguments from both fans and critics of the UFC middleweight champion. Fans want to see two of the best lock horns in the UFC regardless of the weight difference. Critics on the other hand (myself included) look at this as an unfair fight and believe the size difference is too much of a mismatch. Keep in mind that Silva is coming off a fight at 205 pounds and is now calling out the 170 pound champion.

Critics argue that instead of calling out GSP that Silva should be working towards a big fight with Jon Jones. Like GSP, there is a size difference there for sure. However, Silva has fought at 205 pounds on three occasions in the UFC and has looked absolutely flawless in each fight. While Silva has opened the door a bit in recent weeks about a Jones fight, it does seem a bit odd that the UFC would even encourage the size mismatch with GSP while not putting any pressure on him for a Jones fight.

This news certainly won’t excite GSP who has grown tired of the Silva talk leading up to UFC 154.

“I hate that. They talk to me about the next fight, and I’m not there. Like I’m supposed to win easy, like it’s a joke. Carlos Condit is a dangerous guy. I always respect my opponent. My life is on the line…

It depends on the time. I don’t know. I haven’t thought about [fighting Silva]. I know he’s a big guy. I have to sit down and analyze it.”

I am still a little surprised that the UFC is even entertaining this idea. For Silva and Jones who have cleaned out their divisions, it makes sense. For GSP, there is still a big money fight on the table with Nick Diaz in the division. After that the UFC could be looking at another big fight in the division with GSP’s pupil Rory MacDonald. With the way Jon Fitch fought in Brazil, a potential rematch with GSP could also have some legs. Taking GSP out of the division and putting these fights on hold for a mismatch with Silva just doesn’t add up to me. Especially when GSP has repeatedly said he has very little interest in the fight to begin with.

Now GSP would have to get past Carlos Condit to even entertain the Silva fight and that won’t be easy. I have to think for a guy as focused as GSP, that all of this Silva talk along with The Spider’s appearance may add as a distraction to the champion.
At least we’ll find out once and for all at UFC 154 whether this fight is going to happen or not. If GSP says no it’s time to close the door on this one for good.

Silva-GSP is the more advantageous money match for Anderson than a match with Jones. He could naturally fight at 205 like Jones while GSP hasn't seen action beyond 170.

Yup...this would basically be a bully match up for Silva. He's a bitch for pursuing it...whether it's more financially attractive or not.

According to GSP lovers he is just going to wrestle Silva better than Sonnen did and win a wide decision with ease.

In reality GSP will be lucky to get past Condit. Now, he will probably realistically win a boring decision over a guy with no TDD but if he gets clipped or is foolish for just a second on the ground he'll fall into a bad situation.

I think GSP has the right tools to beat Anderson Silva, just not the size.I'm sure at some point he'll get clipped by Anderson and be hurt even worse then he was against Serra.

Before I would've went with GSP via decision but with this injury and such a long lay off it makes me wonder how good is GSP going to be when he comes back.Nearly 2 years can be a long time and that ACL tear can be a big deal.Other athletes have had trouble coming back after an injury like that like Tiger Woods himself mixed in with that scandal but this is an even bigger physical sport then something like Golf.Right now I'm going with GSP via Unanimous Decision but I wouldn't be surprised to see Condit push the pace and see if he can tire GSP out testing and testing a little how bad that ACL is and pull off a win.
