OFFICIAL 2006 Yard Sale Thread

I found two anime dvds at goodwill today. I got Ghost in the Shell and the first dvd of Hellsing. There were a few more Hellsing dvds, but I didn't have that much money. I was surprised to see Hellsing dvds there. They were $3 each. One thing I noticed was that the GITS dvd still had the white label on the top of the case. Could that mean that it was stolen?

It's possible but doubtful. There is a goodwill not to far from where I live and every month the local Target donates tons of stuff they clearanced out, or can not sell or items that were recalled. I've seen several brand new video games there ( though none were worth buying)

Well, I did it again.

Another horrible day yesterday brightened by an e-mail from a Craigslist ad I spotted about a week ago. Guy had been out sick the entire week with the flu, and finally got back to me saying that these games were still for sale.

Met up with him today, and dropped 70 bucks total for these games....SEALED:

Arc The Lad: Collection
Chrono Cross
Final Fantasy VIII
Legend of Dragoon
Final Fantasy Chronicles

Talked with the guy for a minute, and found out that out of his list of games he was getting rid of, only the kiddie ones generated any interest.

Wow...words fail me, but I do love growing the ol' collection like this ;)

*edit* Update: I did it yet again...I think I need to take a break:

$55 (I could have lowballed this guy if I wanted, but I felt bad...I have a soft spot for potheads/crackwhores) got me this bundle of guides (all of them are in mint condition):

Final Fantasy VIII
Final Fantasy IX
The Big Playstation Book 2000
The Legend of Zelda the Windwaker also Includes Ocarina of Time
The Legend of Dragoon
Pokeman Red and Blue

And the two big ones....

Valkyrie Profile
Final Fantasy Anthology

Definitely worth the money and the late night meetup :)

I only post on CAG during yard sale season.. so.. my season is on, and I'm back in action! Over the winter, I made a couple of decent NES and N64 grabs, but one of the better finds I made was 10 copies of Zelda Four Swords Adventures for Gamecube, sealed, $2 each at a Goodwill. Huge score!

In the past week I've got the following..

NES with two controllers, and AC adapter $5
Lime Green N64 w/ 1 Lime Green controller, all hookups, and Pokemon Snap $13
N64 Paper Mario $1
2 Sega Megadrives, 2 Controllers, 1 AC hookup and 7 really weird asian bootleg games $15

I've never actually found a MegaDrive in the US before.. so I couldn't pass up two!

More to come in the '06 season!

I made a thread about it, but I am happy to say my first ever buy off Craig's List went very well. Got a copy of the Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence Limited Edition for only $30. The set is damn near mint condition. Also the Existence disc is still sealed. :)

Ok, so I went to a yard sale/flea market type thingy this morning. I was looking through a box of old computer disks and came upon Link: The Faces of Evil game for the Philips CD-i system. I bought it for 0.25 cents.

It's in great condition. the cardboard sleeve has little dings on it, but other than that it's perfect.

I know it's on a dead system, but does anyone know if this is worth anything?

At the flea today:

3 soul calibur II action figures $15 (NIB)
Voldoa, Asteroth, forgot the third.

DC, SF III: second impact disk only $4, a bit scrached, does not play, needs to be resurfaced. :(

All for sale in Trade thread

Stuff I passed on
A bunch of metal gear solid action figures. NIB

I went to a church sale that was advertised as an antique sale. Some lady was selling her kids games so for $10 i got a complete Final Fantasy VII black label. A cart of Mario Kart 64 a Cart of Mario Tennis and A complete of Resident Evil 2

Went to some garage sales today and found the following four NES games:

The Simpsons: Bart vs. The World
Abadox
Rolling Thunder (with the Tengen sleeve)
Joust

$1.00 each

She had an NES w/ 2 guns and at least 2 controllers, Game Genie w/ manual and and hook-ups in a box, but wanted $50.00 with games (about 10). She also wanted $80.00for an N64 w/ mostly sports games!

1 Wadget board game (complete)
Paid: $1

1 Genesis (Model 1 w/ power adapter)
1 3rd party 3-button controller

1 NBA Jam T.E. (GEN, cart only)
Paid: $2

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yardsaling season may very well have begun for us! Although we only hit 6 sales today, we made purchases at half of them! Most of the sales were listed on Craigslist, as our newspaper sources have yet to kick in fully.

Last week, we hit 5 sales and got the board game for evilmax's mom. Nothing interesting to report.

We had actually emailed today's first sale last night, and received a response that they had 'some old system' and that they'd pull it out for the sale. We arrived right when it started, and they had a dirty Genesis 1 marked $5. We pointed out that there was no A/V cable, and offered $2 CIF. The guy was really friendly and said "Sure, just take it away!" Then he asked if we were the ones who emailed, we said yes, and he said "Well, I'm glad it was you guys who got it!" So that was nice!

While driving, we saw a guy putting up a sign for a sale and asked for directions. Upon arriving, I noticed a bucket of old Legos (early 80's), a lot of broken platforms, marked $5. They were asking too much for what was there, and I didn't want it enough to start haggling. Another table had a GenII with Sonic and Knuckles in it, a stack of four complete Gen games (Tiny Toons, Lion King, Jeopardy, and some other crappy game), and a shopping bag with another Genesis and a bunch of carts in it. We asked the bulbous white-trash lady running the sale how much she wanted, and she told us "$15 for the stack of boxed games, $30 for the bag, $20 for the other Genesis." She then went on to say "I know that a lot of these games are expensive", (pointing to Lion King), "I paid 90 bucks for that and I was on a waiting list for over a week to get it!" Ok lady. Sonic & Knuckles and Paperboy both had manuals, so we offered $1 CIF and she took it after some hesitation.

Our last find came at an indoor flea market, located up at the top of a huge hill. Funnily, the only videogames in the place were at the very last table. Some young kids were running it, and they had 2 Genesis II's for $10 each, a NES for $30, and some assorted GEN and NES carts asking $1 each (we were surprised at the relatively decent asking price). We saw Gunstar Heroes and knew we definitely had to get that, and the only other game that was decent enough was Gauntlet. We offered $1 CIF, and after a slight hesitation the kid took it.

All in all today was great, and it felt a lot like a typical yardsale day (aside from the slight chill in the air). Just the fact that we spotted an 'unadvertised' sale made it feel like the yardsale season is beginning. Today's finds really got us pumped for the season, and we can't wait for the warmer weather and higher volume of sales.

It's been a long winter.

Hit about 6 sales today.. lots of "phantom" sales today that were advertised, but when I showed up at the address.. NO SALE! Bought some stuff to sell.. didn't see anything game related. Bought books, an LP with college drinking songs on it from the 50's, and my wife bought a Disney lithograph for a buck. Hit a used CD store, and scored Robocop Criterion Edition though!

thank god yardsale season is back in swing
got a n64 with mario cart for 5

20 nes cartridges and 3 genesis for 10 dollars
i only hit like 10 sales so scored at 20 per cent of them i decided this year i would only keep the games i want and trade the rest in towards games for the ps2 and xbox 360, todays haul got me call of duty 2 and a wireless controler so for 15 dollars i did pretty good and still kept the n64 and 5 games

got an XBOX and two controllers (one XBOX brand the other madcatz) for 8 bucks total this weekend. Was really happy about this. The XBOX has a DRE but its very fixable and thankfully it isnt a thompson drive. :) anyways yard sales ROCK.

1 Mortal Kombat (GEN, complete)
1 Mortal Kombat 3 (GEN, complete)
1 Williams' Arcade Classics (GEN, complete)
1 Toe Jam & Earl (GEN, cart only)
Paid: $5
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Spur-of-the-moment Craigslist score. The guy was asking $10, but took our $5 offer. The main reason we got this is for TJ&E. The price-per-game breakdown is a little more than we would typically pay at a yardsale, but we don't mind too much.

We bought a couple storage bins (and need more!) and got some cleaning done today. Here's some fun pics during the re-organization:

1 Pokemon Stadium 2 (N64, cart only)
1 Banjo-Kazooie (N64, cart only, Players Choice)
1 Yoshi's Story (N64, cart only, Players Choice)
Paid: $2

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We hit 11 sales today! It rained until 10AM, and then it got absolutely beautiful out. Unfortunately, the damage had already been done, and there weren't as many sales as there could've been.

I'm still a little off my game in terms of wheelin' and dealin', and I made a couple of mistakes today. First off was that we saw a non-GOTY Halo marked for $5, and I didn't offer anything. I probably would've liked to have it for $1, maybe even $2, but I didn't say anything. It's no huge loss really, but I still should've made the offer. The worst they can say is no, and the best is that you get a good deal.

The second mistake is a little more understandable. We found a small non-advertised sale which consisted of a single card table with a couple of things on it, seemingly being tended by a 12-year-old boy. I take a look at the table, and find a few gameboy games. The only things of interest were cart-only Pokemon Silver and Pokemon Crystal. When asked how much he wanted, he said "Well...they both still have save-data on them...so how about...$15 bucks.", which I of course scoffed at. At that point, his Dad came out of the garage carrying some more stuff. The dad looked like Ernest P. Worrell if he grew his hair out, grew a short scraggly beard, and developed a drinking problem. He walks over to his kid, and yells "STOP TALKING AND GET IN THE HOUSE!" The kid says that he's only trying to sell his games, and the dad yells "YOUR GAMES!? WHO PAID FOR THEM!? I SAID TO SHUT UP AND GET IN THE HOUSE!" So the kid goes running inside, and I don't really know what to say. The guy turns to me and says "How about $4 for each, ah hell, $3 each". If I were at my best I would've offered $1 total for both, but I was a little rusty and a little rattled. Ah well, I feel kind of bad leaving Pokemon Crystal behind, but no biggie.

The third mistake came at the sale that we bought the N64 games from. We had to ask if they had any games, and the kids working the sale brought out a bin of N64 games. We originally picked out the 4 games we got plus Super Smash Bros and Zelda: OoT. After some hesitation, the kids kind of sheepishly said that they still play a lot of these games, and they wouldn't sell Smash or Zelda. So we offered $2 for the remaining 4 and they took it. The mistake was leaving behind Mario Party 2 and 3. I didn't want to set aside too many games because I didn't know how much they were expecting on getting for them. I thought that the 6 would've been enough, but after they took away 2 of them, I should've grabbed the Mario Partys. Again, no big loss, but something I need to keep in mind so I don't let it happen again. We were too hasty in leaving.

But overall it was fun. The weather was beautiful, and if there was any doubt before, yardsale season has officially started. I expect the number of sales to grow next weekend, as long as the weather stays nice. It felt so good to get back out there!

yet another find on craig's list. today I picked up copies of...

Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete (PS1)
Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete (PS1)

both for around $35 a piece. all of the extra goodies still had their original plastic baggies they came in as well. not a huge deal, but the fact that they were in mint/near mint condition and complete made it a great deal in my mind. I've never played these games, so I will finally be able to see what makes them among my friends' favorite games. :)

Scored Metal Gear Solid Subsistence Limited Edition with the reserve disc, new but open, for $77 shipped off Craigslist. Apparently sells for $150 on eBay, but I got it for someone who works at a Used CD / DVD store that held me a copy of the OOP Robocop Criterion DVD last week.

Even though the skies were gray, we still hit up 16 sales. Only a couple "rain" cancellations, but we came across several unadvertised sales while driving.

The first two finds listed were from Craigslist earlier this week. The 7800 was listed for "$1500" (I think she meant $15), I offered $5, and a few days later the deal was sealed. The box has some wear and some tape along the side, but overall it's in pretty good shape. I had to actually go in the woman's apartment to get it, and the kitchen was full of dirty plates, bowls, etc. In the sink, on the counters, on the table, on the chairs, even on the floor! I was awed by the sight. The woman informed me that her husband bought it for $2 at a yardsale a few years ago. I was happy paying the $5, and to get out of there.

The 25 Atari 2600 games were the other Craigslist find. Can't beat less than 25 cents a game!

RE: DS was our first find today. He was asking $12-15, but he very reluctantly took $5. He also had PDZ and COD2 for 360, asking $18 a piece. At the same sale, we spoke with another woman 'saling who informed us she had a ton of old-school videogames in her basement. We exchanged contact info, so hopefully that amounts to something!

Later, we went to a sale where this young guy, probably late teens, went right over to Evilmax and shook his hand, saying "Hey, how you been, man?". I thought maybe he knew the kid, but apparently he had never seen him before in his life. Crazy yardsale people.

We got the Mario comic at a sale full of drunk people. One of their tables had a box full of TV-recorded porn and a coffee mug shaped like boobs. We just bought the comic.

The videos were at the final sale of the day, asking $10, but took $3.

Pretty good week!
You didn't grab the 360 games? Could have easily have flipped those for credit, or hell, a brand new 360 game using EB's "trade 2 used get 1 new free" on Xbox 360 titles.

1 Lego Emperor's Stronghold (#3053, New in Box/Sealed)
1 2.5-pound bag of assorted Legos
Paid: $1
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Visited 1 sale down the street. The Lego box still has the $40 price tag on it, all bags inside are sealed. Great find!

7 Atari 7800 Games - 4.50

Asteroids
Ballbazer
Hat Trick
Jinks
Ms. Pac-Man
Pole Position II
Realsports Baseball

Stopped by two yardsales nearby shortly after 12 PM today, found the games at the second sale. Was asking $1 per a game and agreed on $4.50 for all of them.

I also found a 1st party Sega Saturn steering wheel for a buck at a church rummage sale afew weeks ago.

1 Duck Hunt (NES, cart only)
Paid: 25 cents

1 2-pound bag of Legos
Paid: 50 cents

1 Final Fantasy VII (PS1, Non-GH, manual + 2 copies of disk 2, no disk 1 or 3) :whistle2:?
1 box of Topps Nintendo Game Packs cards (47 sealed packs, 1 short of a full box)
Paid: $5

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hit 13 sales, 1 thrift store, and 1 flea today.

At one of the earlier sales we went to, we found a huge box of videogame stuff. It had a boxed Genesis 1, boxed N64, a bunch of boxed gameboy accessories, and a light smattering of games. The following convorsation ensued:
Me: How much are you asking for the entire box?
Her: Oh I don't know, but it would probably be well over $100.
Me: Heh, really?
Her: Well, Gamestop will give me $12 each for most of those games. (she lies)
Me: I work at Gamestop (I lie), and we don't even take these games in anymore (not a lie).
Her: Oh I thought I knew you, you look familiar...(she says this snidely, and its funny because I don't really work at Gamestop.)

So I continue to rummage through the box. While I'm doing this, a 9 year old girl takes a small bag of GB/GBC games, and asks the lady how much. "$25" she coldly replies. So the girl's father has the same startled reaction I did when I heard her price for the box, "Pfff, way to much." So the little girl picks out a Pokemon game, and the lady tells her that it's $3. The little girl asks if she could take $2 for it, and the bitch running the sale replies "Oh no, not for that game. $3." So the little girl looks sad, and pays the $3. Like really, the dollar means that much to this woman? She couldn't make a little kid's day and let her have a "bargain"? So by now, we've pretty much figured out that this broad running the sale is crazy, and we wouldn't be walking away with anything. But for fun, we take a complete Shaq-Fu for Genesis and a cart only OoT for N64, and offer a dollar for both. "Absolutely not" she says, as she grabs the games out of my hands. Ah well.

Got the FF7 and Nintendo cards at the flea market. We found them both at the same booth, but apparently nobody could find its owner. Eventually some random guy who was working another booth told us that we could just buy them from him, and he would give the other guy the money. We offered $4, he went $6, we settled on $5. It's weird that FF7 has two copies of disk 2, and none of disk 1 or 3. The cards are a pretty neat addition to the collection.

So we've been to this same flea market 3 times now, and it's pretty crappy overall. A bunch of people are never at their booths, and it's almost impossible to buy anything (if you actually find something). Every time we go there's always the same old stuff, nothing sells because most of it is overpriced. There's this one guy that's never EVER at his booth, and today he had a bunch of cart only N64 games. We pick out Jet Force Gemini and F-Zero (both filthy as sin), and go try to hunt the guy down. 5 minutes later we finally find him, and the following conversation ensues:
Me: Hey, would you take $1 for both?
Him: $1 for both!? That's way too low.
Me: Well, they're really dirty and I don't even know if they'd work. I'm going to have to spend 20 minutes cleaning these up before I even try them.
Him: I've got some amonia at my booth, I can clean them in 2 seconds.
Me: So why aren't they already clean then? Have you tested them?
Him: No, I haven't tested them.
Me: Well, would you take $1 for both?
Him: I have a policy not to sell any game for less than $3.
Me: Well, it doesn't look like people are buying them.
Him: I'd rather them sit there forever then sell them for 50 cents a piece. I'd rather just throw them away then sell them for 50 cents.

So I put the games back and leave. It's just an interesting look at the mindset of your average flea market vendor. Every time we go to one of these places, we always overhear some random couple talking to eachother and saying "So really, how do these people make money?" or "Who would buy this stuff at the prices they're asking?" It doesn't seem like most vendors care about actually selling their products (evidenced by their usually filthy condition), and seem to care more about conversing with other vendors rather than their own customers. So now, those N64 games are going to sit there for another 5 years, instead of going into the hands of a potential customer.

It was an interesting day.

heh, reminded me of this older guy who had a bunch of random household stuff sitting on a canvas on the ground and near the middle of the the pile was the only toy which ended up being a Return of the Jedi carded figure (cant remember which but it wasnt a rare one) and so i ask and he was looking to get a $100 for it...why, cause it had a Revenge of the Jedi offer sticker on it, which i noticed before i asked ( i was heavily into original Star Wars items about 10 years ago)...but that price was extremely high especially for the condition of it

anyways i just laughed at him and went about my business and wound up buying some original Transformers from a guy a few tables over...a complete Jetfire loose for $10 along with a bunch of parts....couldnt beat that and made me less annoyed over what just happend....this was about 5 years ago i would say

I remember when the $1 store had loads of these many many years ago. I bought a box, but I don't think I have any left now. There are lots of foil scratch-off cards and stuff like that. Nice find tho :)

Oh and strange that FF7 had two Disc 2s and nothing else... (still can't believe this game is in demand now, after selling, what, 9 million copies?)

I'll post my pawn shop freebie tomorrow

55 sales and not one damn thing unless i wanted baby clothes, went by a new flea market in the area as usual overpriced, smb/duckhunt for $12.00, i laughed and told the lady i know where a crate of 50 of them are for .10 a piece

...You do? :)
Hook a CAG up?

evilmax

even though you didn't get a Disc 1 or 2 for FF 7, it was a nice find for $5. I have the GH version of FF 7 and I wouldn't mind switching the GH case for an original case (since the discs aren't marked GH) :)

There were tons of advertised sales in the newspaper and on craigslist for today. I had my route all planned out, and several listed comics and video games. And yet as soon as I wake up and head out the door its pouring rain! :bomb:

Yardsale season isn't in full effect here yet in the suburbs of Toronto, but I found 3 sales advertised in my local newspaper. Unfortunately I decided to sleep in and I went out at 10am, the first place I stopped at, the man running the sale said he sold an older Sega system and an NES earlier in the day, doh! Teaches me to sleep in. The other 2 had nothing of noting. Also found a few unadvertised sales as I drove around, so in total I hit maybe 6? Guess it's too early in the season still...

And I'm having problems locating a cheap NES. Salvation army had one, 9.99 with no hookups or controllers and SMB3 in the slot, passed on that. The only thing I've really picked up over the last 2 weeks was a spare genesis 1 at a thrift store for 3.99. I also saw a pristine genesis 1 with the words High Definition graphics on it (made me laugh) for 9.99 at goodwill, but I wasn't sure if I needed another one, I probably should've taken it tho just because it was so clean lol.

I hope next week fairs better.

Evilmax, as usual, excellent description of your arduous quest to find cheap games. Sales have been sucking here on Long Island, as there were only a few around these parts. Found a complete FZero SNES, Tengen Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom for NES, and a Kung Fu Heroes for NES all for $2. Obviously, a real bang for the start of the season.....

Well i found a board game monopoly from 1935 when i was helping my aunt do her garage sale. Its up over 300 dollars on ebay right now(ends tonight) and she was going to sell it for a dollar. Im guessing that may be my best find for this year and i wasnt even looking.

I'll give an update of how much it ends up selling for this evening

holy crap...$1282 dollars, well im happy for the season now and i get half of that!

Xenogears strategy guide in pretty good shape
Paid = FREE

I hit every pawn shop in town and didn't really find anything noteworthy. But then I remembered one on the edge of town that's always kind of empty and sketchy (looks like a front for something else...), and decided it was worth a stop.

In the first case was nothing special... your normal crap PS2 selection and some guides for wrasslin' games. The next glass case was utterly empty except for this gem and some other guide that I don't even remember because my attention was so diverted.

The guy also had a case of fake Oakleys, so I decided to pick up a pair. When I went to pay, I asked him how much he wanted for the guide, and he said, "Oh that? You can take it. Just pay me for the glasses." He might as well have just shoveled some money into my pockets.

I've had 2 Xenogears guides before... one I bought brand new for retail price at a video game specialty shop in Ohio about 3 years ago (you'd think they would know the value of what they had??) and the other I picked up when Gamestop still had $1.99 used guides. (I miss those terribly.) I sold them for $60 and $80 ea respectively, but I've been on a collecting binge lately, so I might just keep it this time... unless somebody sends me a good offer. (It IS in my tradelist!)

Holy crap!

Well, I guess it's time for us to start keeping a lookout for old board games!

Congrats! Maybe you should use your half of the money to buy Boardwalk.

are the FF7 GH discs screenprinted white like the normal version? Because I've seen several PSX GH discs that are just black and silver.

I really don't need to congratulate you now that you're rolling in $1200 but... wow, good find.

T-Shirt Ninja-
Good luck on getting an NES on the cheap. I've seen several SNESes and Genesises (Genesii?) at my Goodwill in the $8-$10 range, but never an NES. One of the pawn shops i visited this week wanted $79 (!) for one.. they also had a bootleg Famiclone that they wanted $69 (!) for.

I do have an extra NES (see tradelist) but it's at home now so I wouldn't be able to send it until June anyway.

And you have no idea when someone is being facetious. The sad part is I think you're being serious.

Well, to break up the argument that has currently Erupted, I'll throw in my recent find.

Best part is that it's perfect, I found it at a Salvation Army on a whim. It had absolutely no sticker on it so when I brought it up to the register to buy it, I thought that the lady would put a huge price on it, but I got this book with complete stickers, and what looks like very little wear for $1.69.

Makes you wonder who would donate something like that to the Salvation Army. Some college student is probably pretty mad at his mom right now...

It looks like we might have our first really nice weekend (all of the others have been rainy and gloomy), and I'm pretty excited. Hopefully it holds.

I'd tried to see if there were any video games as well, because usually I can find some NES games there for a buck each but I didn't see any. I'll be going back tomorrow early to see if they have any more Strategy Books. I was hanging out with my friend so I couldn't go all-out-CAGing mode.

When I do that, my hair changes color and several people die usually.

Ah you're lucky, forecasters are predicting rain here this weekend. Hopefully it'll be clear on saturday morning though, some street like 10kms from my house is having a 30+ house street sale. It says rain or shine, but if it rains I'm sure the number of people out will be far less than suggested.

I also did some searching around and found out that in late May there's an annual street sale that usually has over 100 houses participating (must be one long street eh? lol). That should be a good one.

Hopefully my next post will be of some good finds, either way I'm eager to see what you all pull in on the weekend.
