Wish there were a few more details on BGEE. Keeping the isometric view, keeping the limited voice acting, keeping the second edition ruleset.
Played a little bit of Tales of Graces F yesterday. I have to say that the beginning portion seems like such a chore to play through. Combat also takes a bit of getting used to.
The prologue was definitely a chore but as soon as you get to
adulthood
everything gets about ten times better.

Went through Parasite Eve 3 again in order to rewrite a review for it. A lot of problems, but it's a fun time, probably the best shooter on PSP which isn't saying much at all.

I guess it's not much of an RPG anymore...
I had a blast with Arc Rise and think it's one of the better RPGs this generation. Most folks write it off as soon as they hear the dialog (which is horrendous), but I just disabled voices. To be honest, it probably added to the charm. In any case, the characters are likeable, the plot is simple but interesting, and the combat is fun. It provides a good challenge too. It's one of the few RPGs in recent years that has required level grinding. The ending is also satisfying, which seems to be a bit of a rarity of late.
Yeah, I really liked it too. And as cookie-cutter as a few of the characters are, the story was pretty unique, and the ending wasn't the typical overly happy, predictable rubbish that a lot of RPGs have.

Sooooo hyped for BGEE and BG2EE. I've actually never played BG1, but BG2 is my second favorite game of all time. Seeing as how many of the people on the team are former Bioware/Black Isle Studios folk that worked on the originals, I have high hopes.

This'll be the first pc game I don't wait for a steam sale. Day 1. No Questions. Possibly extra copies to force my friends to play it.

BG2 is my favorite game of all time. This is day 1 for me, no matter how bad it turns out, just to show there's still a fanbase for the series.

And how can you not have gone back and played BG1 if you liked BG2 that much? Sacrilege!

To the top of my queue when it arrives today!

A Tales game. How did you not foresee this happening?
A Tales game. How did you not foresee this happening?
I never expected the game to go on about butts for five minutes in a fully voiced conversation scene. I almost broke into tears. Other weird awkward moments? I fully expect, but my god I couldn't stop laughing at that shit. I think it's the sub-par voices that made the scene.
Having recently gone through it?

You're not missing too much by skipping BG1. BG2 pisses all over it.
This. I tried playing BG1 at a friends house (after forcing him to get BG2, but he was adamant he would start at #1) and it wasn't even close. I actually own it and was planning on installing all the mods this summer for a playthrough, so I'll def. play the EE version. Perfect timing!

I got BG2 cuz I got it on a demo disk in some PC mag way back when, and thought it was glorious. Got it for Christmas that year and didn't even worry about not playing BG1 (at the time didn't realize it was a direct sequel with character importing, just assumed it was like FF or the like)

You sure it wasn't one of the Ar Tonelico games? Those games are sooooo freaking awkward with a roommate in another room hearing random bits out of context... and often times even in context.

I should point out that there are mods (BGTutu or BG Trilogy) that bring BG1 more in-line with BG2. But even with that? The writing is worse, the encounters are worse, the environments are worse, and the balance is worse.

BG1 was a great first effort (it was Bioware's first RPG; their only previous game was a first-person mech shooter). BG2 is a great game.

I hear ya. That game is a gold mine for sexual innuendos.

Not really spoilers but....

Definitely Tales of Graces ƒ.
I saw the "out of butt" comment. in what context was that used?
Well, it's used in correct context that much I can say. Since it's a rather new'ish release and not many who post here have made it as far as I have in the game I'll refrain from posting the story spoiler even with the tag. It'd spoil the scene knowing when it happens ahead of time. ;)

Just let it be known that Pascal is very loose with her words.

Okay, I was just curious if she was literarlly talking about inserting something in a butt. Maybe a fruit bar, microphone or something on a stick.

Yeah, I was planning on installing TUTU.

Really hope they integrate most (if not all) of the updates/fixes from those mods, or that the mods are compatible or can be made compatible with them.

Aww, it looks like I started with the wrong JRPG. Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2 is weird, but not that weird.

I played that for like 2-3 hours before I had to put it down. Gameplay is better than the first, but the rest I just can't stand. Though I bought it mostly for collector purposes.

Nearing what I think is the end of Tales of Graces ƒ. Then I guess I'll do the future arc and maybe a NG+.

I'm really enjoying Tales of Graces F so far, about 20 hours in or so. I've never been a huge Tales fan (if I'm playing a JRPG, I generally prefer turn-based battles) but I've gotten quite into it. If I can carry the momentum through finishing it I'll probably try to harness that and finally finish ToV, which I've been putting off for years.

The only thing I don't really like about Graces is how incredibly corny the whole friendship thing the story is based around. It's a little grating at times, but the gameplay more than makes up for it.

The entire story is really stupid, imo.

Never been a big Tales fan either, though I loved Phantasia.

About 30 hours in. Clock says 31:xx, but I fell asleep three times while playing. I've actually walked away from a lot of the cut-scenes (didn't skip, cause I was an ear-shot away, so I stilled listened).

I really enjoy the combat though. I'm still not great at it, but long boss fights are really fun.

Debating on a second play-through for the platinum (with all CG/skits skipped), but I think I already messed up a bit in my first.

P.S. Mmm peaches...

That's why she's so awesome, she's a giant dork.
I have played precisely one Ys game.

I did not play it for very long.

I do not remember which one it was.

I can't advance in Nier because I can't figure out how to fish properly.

edit: finally got one, awesome. never touching that mini-game again.

I went through that same exact thought process.

Neir has the best fishing mechanic of any RPG. You hold down a button once you see the rod dips and move the stick left and right. Either you get it or you don't. Never had any trouble until near the game.

I used this from a faq

"Odds are, you tried to tackle the fishing game on your own at first, and odds are you absolutely hated it. Thing is, the in-game explanation for how to fish is absolute garbage. Forget it. Nier's fishing game is deceptively simple--almost too simple.

Here's what you're doing: you press cross (or A) to cast your line. Don't worry, it's not supposed to go very far and you can't alter the distance. Watch the tip of the fishing pole. It will bob up and down a few times. Wait for it to bend down further than normal, and press cross--and hold it. You are now reeling the fish in. This is where things get tricky: the fish will swim from side to side. The protagonist will automatically move his body in the opposite direction of the fish--you cannot control which way he moves. What you need to do is to pull the move the left analog stick along the exact same angle as his body. If the protagonist is standing still, pull down. If he's pulling to the left, you pull to the left, and vis versa.

The red bar at the bottom is the tension meter. So long as it's red and making that lovely clicking sound, you're doing fine. If it turns yellow, you no longer have the analog stick in precisely the right location--shift it until it turns red again to reel in the fish.

Like I said: deceptively easy. You can increase your fishing skill by completing the, "Fisherman's Gambit," series of quests. Fishing skill effects the amount of time it takes to reel in different kinds of fish. The lower your skill, the longer you'll be reeling."

Fishing in Nier got addictive, but I wanted to do all the side missions. Only side mission I did not complete was the one where you grow pink moonflowers. fuck that shit.

I wouldn't call it my favorite fishing mechanic. I really enoyed Zelda Twilight Princess fishing side quests. Just about every Breath of Fire game has fishing. Most Suikoden games had it too. Oh, and Persona 4. I'm sure there's a ton more.

Oh Christ, I totally forgot about that.

Panzerfaust! Do not touch that shit. Do not. It is the worst thing in the entire game. It is fucking terrible. If a man breaks in to your house and puts a gun to your head and tells you that he wants you to grind out some god damn flowers?

You break your controller in two and use the jagged edge to slit your god damn wrists. And as you lay dying, know that you were victorious.
I would pay a ridiculous amount of money for this game

Not even if he asks nicely?
He probably knows what I want it for so I don't think he'll give it to me. ;)

You know, people were telling me that fishing was horrible in Nier, but I didn't think it was that bad. Maybe because I did the fishing stuff on the Wii version of Okami.

So, the next Atelier game was announced for Japan a few days ago. I'm already excited for it and Meruru doesn't even come out in the US for another 2 months.

im playing Ys Seven right now and loving it... my question is... i LOVE FFT with a passion - beat it 5 times (4 on ps1 and once on my psp)... what game should i start next, Disgaea or Tactics Ogre?

If you're looking for an experience which is more similar to FFT, I'd definitely go with Tactics Ogre - it was the spiritual predecessor to FFT and plays very similarly.. Disgaea is great, but it definitely has a much different feel to it than FFT. I'd also recommend you check out Jeanne D'Arc, which is one of the better SRPGs I've every played.

The Valkyrie Profile game on the :ds: is pretty good so far. A little challenging but good. I really dislike the sin/overkill mechanic.

Especially since you can't seem to cancel your attacks, and wait until the next turn
to get in a good overkill. (As opposed to just a weak, normal kill)

The battles are pretty boring, but the world is really cool and the characters are a lot of fun. Worth playing, but yeah, I find it hard to tolerate the pacing of the PSX FF games anymore.

Emil is a huge buzz kill for Nier. I hope he just goes away soon.
