Welcome to the Official CAG Blockbuster/Gamerush video game deal thread.

Sadly, Blockbuster has cut down it's maximum trade-in value from $33-$35 to $25 or so and dropped all other values along with it. So welcome to the new world of Blockbuster featuring Gamestop trade-in prices (but without the Edge card and frequent trade-in deals to make it more appealing). Continue on if you feel like there is any need...

ALERT: More POG games (disc-only used games sold for $9.99) sighted at stores week of Nov 9th
Many CAGs have reported finding new shipments of POG games (prepacked previously owned games) showing up on Nov 10th-12th. This is YMMV as many stores will not get them. But if they do, they are usually in clear cases, disc-only, and are priced at $9.99. Some notables include Call of Duty World at War, CoD Modern Warfare, Halo 3, Halo Wars, etc. It appears to be all 360 games this time. These are disc-only refurbs but are usually in excellent shape. Note that these all have the same barcode that rings up $9.99 - if you find the same games with regular cover art and specific bar codes for that used game, then they are not part of this POG stock and will be regular prices (generally way over $9.99 for the newer titles).

ALERT: B1G1 NOW OVER (but possibly returning in late November)
The latest Buy 1 Get 1 Free sale on games $14.99 has ended. The following list of $14.99 and under used games will be maintained for the next sale though. It seems highly likely from various reports that a B1G1 sale will be returning some time in late November. Some are even a decent buy without the B1G1 sale:

What is this thread for?
The primary function of this thread is to discuss current trade-in and sale promos, post any trade-in values you have obtained, and discuss new and used game selection and availability. Please post trade-in values with the date of the trade (or quote) and system.

It is also permissible to discuss system availability, credit issues, etc. As long as it is related to game trades or sales at Blockbuster it is generally OK to discuss it here.

Unlike more tightly focused clearance threads, it is OK to discuss more general Gamerush/Blockbuster issues here as well as trade requests as long as they are kept to a minimum (and usually just during specific deals).

Due to the questionable stability of the Gamerush (and Blockbuster for that matter) brand, it is also permissible to discuss ways of converting credit from Blockbuster to other stores (ie, which games may be used for trading in to other stores such as Gamecrazy or EB/GS). As of right now, we have no indication of Gamerush's imminent demise, but given Blockbuster's ongoing financial difficulties we need to be aware of the possibility.

What is this thread NOT for?
Please do not discuss the flipping of games from one Gamerush store to another should another such opportunity arise (through trade-in deals). It is one thing to "play the market" with trade-in values from one chain to another (GR to GC to EB) - free market buy low/sell high and all that. But taking advantage of loopholes in a single store's policies/promos is frowned upon and has, in the past, led to trade-in bans from GR.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Blockbuster Game Trading Info
- You must sign up for a trade account in addition to your regular Blockbuster account
- You must sign up for a new trade account at every store you wish to trade at, even if using the same main account
- Trade-in credit can be placed onto your store account or onto a "Value" card
- Credit on store accounts can only be used at that one store
- However, credit can be transferred from the store account to a card at any time
- Value cards can be used at any location
- Clerks at one store cannot see your trading/purchasing history at another store via your account
- Gamerush stores often do not get new game stock until the Friday of the release week, thus a few days later than most retailers
- Depending on state law you may or may not get sales tax added to your trade-ins (and thus get more than normal). You will always be charged sales tax where applicable on purchases, even when using credit from a Value card.

Gamerush vs. regular Blockbusters
All Blockbuster game-related discussion belongs here. Most threads created in the Deals forum will be merged in to here. There seems to be the impression by many CAGs that if they don't have a Gamerush store near them (see here for a list of GR stores: http://www.blockbuster.com/content/v.4.286.1.0/media/gameStoreList.pdf) then this thread does not apply to them. However, regular (non-GR) Blockbuster stores often run the same promos and generally have the same trade-in values. I'm going to elaborate on the last sentence as people apparently don't understand that when I say regular BB's have the same trade-in values as Gamerush that it means regular Blockbuster stores accept game trade-ins just like Gamerush stores.

The key differences:
- Only Gamerush stores sell used video game hardware and generally have a much wider selection of new hardware. Many regular BB stores had a PS3 bundle available over Christmas 2007 and since then they have expanded their hardware sales. As of right now (Dec 2008) most Blockbuster stores are selling PS3's, Xbox 360's, Wii's, and DS's. They do not sell PSP's. However, they have also started selling other electronics including Blu-ray players, portable DVD players, and digital picture frames. As a result of not selling used hardware, however, regular Blockbuster stores will not take hardware in for trades.

- Both Gamerush and regular Blockbuster stores take preorders for new games for a $5 deposit (or you can pay any other amount beyond that). Gamerush stores will get many more games in than the regular stores but unfortunately a preorder at either place is not a guarantee you will get the game. Sometimes they do not get certain titles in even if you preorder them months in advance. And even if they do get them, it tends to be a few days later than other stores.

- While many Gamerush stores have cut back on their new game stock, most regular (non-GR) Blockbusters have started selling new games. They usually have a very limited selection of top-selling new 360, PS3, and Wii games.

- Trade-in values are controlled centrally and are uniform across all Gamerush and Blockbuster locations EXCEPT if the Blockbuster is a franchise location. You can tell from the receipt if your store is a franchise store. All Gamerush stores are corporate-owned so they will have uniform pricing.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Featured Preorders
Most Blockbuster stores (in addition to Gamerush stores of course) are featuring several games for preorder. $5 is required for a deposit. There are a few others in addition to what is listed below:

Multiplatform
Beatles Rock Band
Madden 10

:360:

:ps3:

:wii:

:ds:

They usually get these featured games in on release day like any other game retailer (though note - as of late they have been very bad about this and have gotten many games several days late!). Note that you can preorder just about any other game as the system will allow them to preorder anything they have listed (yes, even at regular stores). I have preordered Mario Super Sluggers and Dragon Quest IV myself even though they are not "featured" as preorders. However, if it is not a featured preorder they may or may not get it in, and it may arrive as late as Friday of the release week (postscript - Mario Super Sluggers did indeed arrive on Friday when every other store had it Tues. or Weds. and Dragon Quest IV never arrived).

Of course you can cancel a preorder at any time and get your deposit back or switch it to another game, even after the game comes out. So don't worry about preordering something they might not get - you can always switch it to something else. However, since I've always used credit for purchasing things at Blockbuster I'm not sure how they would handle a cancellation of a cash deposit. They may simply issue a credit to your account so beware of that if placing a cash deposit on a preorder.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Current Trade-In Deals
There are no trade-in deals at this time nor have there been for a very very long time. They did however just recently cut down all their trade-in values to Gamestop-like levels (but without deals to make them more appealing as at GS).

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Trade-In Values
Trade-in price quotes will now be maintained by CAG Friend of Sonic in the THIRD post of this thread. The second post will continue to highlight specific games used to transfer credit from Blockbuster to Gamestop and vice versa.

Trade-in prices are usually universal at both Blockbuster and Gamerush, but can be wildly different at franchise Blockbuster stores. Used game prices change on Sunday with trade-in price drops following the next day (Monday). Thus any quotes given in this thread will almost certainly be good through Sunday of the current week. If you want to be sure to get the same value another CAG has reported then do your trading by Sunday as the price may drop on Monday.

Also note that many stores will no longer accept video games without cover art. This is the official policy for DVD trade-ins but apparently many clerks will confuse the two and not allow it for games either. Just beware that it might be a hassle if you have a disc-only game to trade.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gamerush website
The old Gamerush web site is now defunct, but the following link will take you to Blockbuster online, which may or may not have some info there about games. I dunno - I haven't looked at it in years.
Sorry if this a stupid question, but when the title says though 9/14 that means in theory the deal should still be going on tomorrow? Was gonna go hit up a few BBVs today after work but Phillies double header and Eagles game took up the rest of my day.
Correct, runs through close of business on Monday 9/14.

Thanks for the list. I'm happy I bought top spin 3 the other day. I finna get a couple achievements and hopefully trade it in for an $8 profit.

Edit: I don't understand some of the prices. I bought Dirt for the 360 for 2.50+tax (half off 4.99). I bought top spin 3 for $3.50+tax (half off 6.99), etc etc etc. Also, tax is different in my area anyway.

All copies of Dirt :360: are $4.99? Or is it the clear case, disc only copy? BBV price includes 7.85% tax.

No, its not in a clear case. I was supprised it was actually 4.99 also. the receipt actually says "Dirt." It doesn't say "POG" or whatever. I was just using Dirt as an example. A lot of the $6.99 games look like they are "=4.5*1.0785" That would be the price of an $8.99 game.

I don't mean to sound ungrateful or anything. I'm thankful for the list. Theres a 90% chance I wont have time to go to BBV tomorrow anyway, let alone have time to make a list. Thanks again.

Hmm, interesting. I actually had the 9.99 games listed at 4.5 base instead of 5, but the Excel spreadsheet is now updated and should reflect the change.

Ok, here's some more games I bought on Thursday

Disgaea 2 - 9.99 (sry, I posted earlier it was 6.99. I got it confused with all the other ps2 games)

MLB powerpros - 6.99 (original, not 2008)

Top spin 3 (360) - 6.99

Lost Planet Colonies ed. - 9.99

Lol glad some of you guys got some games. Both stores in my town were cleaned out. True I did go through my own last time pretty well, but I'm surprised we didn't get many transfers, rental to used, or shipments from other stores in. Only thing I got was bond for ps3 because one of the discs I got to trade was pretty crappy and my manager can't/won't credit it, so I just switched.

Otherwise I turned like 60 bucks into 104 on amazon. I guess the sale helped me fund demon's souls and brutal legend =)

Begrudgingly, I paid cash today for:

Wii-
Tak (6.99)

360-
Bolt (9.99)

PS3-
Lair (Free)
Monster Madness (Free)

Looking forward to replenishing my GS credit soon.

Went on a run at lunch time. Bought these with cash (also begrudgingly), then traded to GS:

Each was $5 + tax at BBV after B1G1.

Game (Platform): Base GS TIV -> w/ Edge -> with $20 for 4 games promo

Mercenaries 2 (PS3): $5.50 -> $6.05 -> $11.05
Skate (PS3): $6.00 -> $6.60 -> $11.60
Guitar Hero World Tour (Wii): $7.00 -> $7.70 -> $12.70
We Ski (Wii): $5.00 -> $5.50 -> $10.50

So, after tax I paid $21.63 at BBV and got $45.85 GS credit. Not bad for a lunch break trip.

Crap, so everyone knows, games have to trade to GS for a minimum of 2$ to qualify for the +20, so Monster Madness (1.75) and Battle of the Bands (1.75), do NOT qualify.

Trade-in quotes for BBV (remember those ;)):

:360:
Wheelman - $15
Wanted Weapons of Fate - $17

I have both to trade at a very slight profit (from Target clearance) to pick up some stuff. I'm just not sure it's worth the effort but I suppose I should make at least one run for the GS promo...

Edit - Wow, this deal ended with a fizzle. There was not a single post about it on the last evening! I got a few things from two stores, and traded the two games above to somewhat pay for it. Nothing spectacular but the dregs of what no one else wanted should make me a decent amount at GS. There was stil a lot of games left at the two stores - not many fewer than when the sale started, actually. I'd say my local store sold at best half of their $14.99 and under games and the other store sold maybe 1/3 of theirs.

unfortunately, i loaded up on battle of the bands that i found today. and i picked up 2 more onecha's... why couldnt it be yesterday?

Man. I was planning on making my trip this weekend but I totally forgot that today was the last day of the sale. Blockbuster has gotten so sad.

looks like I missed out on a B1G1 sale at BBV. DoH!

Anyways, does anyone know if the TIV for XBlades has gone down? I'm hoping to pick up some free copies at Best Buy to flip. If its still the same TIV..than damn thats a good flip.

Is anyone's Game Rush getting Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story? I went to two yesterday and they both said "release date 9/18 and we're not getting any". Kinda of a bummer since I have gift cards there.

well one of my local stores shows they have it in stock. So I can only hope they have some in.

Just got a quote over the phone of $15 for X-Blades. Might try and trade in two copies there and get their Marvel Comics painting/poster thing I saw the other day.
Sorry if already posted, saw this on the front page of yahoo finance today.

Blockbuster plans to close as many as 960 stores by the end of the year -

Sad news, but inevitable I guess. Three BBVs have closed near me already this year. While I made a last round for the B1G1 sale yesterday, I was sad not to be able to stop as those locations.

they already closed 2 of my local stores, shit at this rate they will have no stores left, maybe netflix should just buy them for their remaining stock.

That CEO is a jackass, what does he plan on selling next, shampoo !!

I was like a chicken with my head cut off yesterday running around. Yep, used cash with 2 found bukakis...and doubled up at GS...too many games coming out ... 50% off plus no tax was too hard to pass up ... found a couple network adapters and a mint famicon micro on my travels...it was fun but hectic...
by the time I returned, it was so late, no time to report anything before the deal ended...

Blockbuster to shutter as many as 960 stores

Blockbuster will close as many as 960 stores to cut costs amid fierce competition

 • On Tuesday September 15, 2009, 1:41 pm EDT

DALLAS (AP) -- Blockbuster is planning to close as many as 960 stores by the end of next year. That would shrink the video rental chain by more than 20 percent as it struggles against stiff competition from Netflix and Redbox.
The store closures disclosed in documents filed Tuesday shows Blockbuster is having to cut much deeper than it anticipated to save money and keep its lenders happy.
Blockbuster now expects to close between 810 and 960 of its U.S. stores through 2010, up from its the 380 to 425 stores that normally would be closed. If Blockbuster hits the high end of the new target for store closures, it will represent 22 percent of its 4,356 U.S. stores.
The Dallas-based company has closed 276 stores so far this year.

by the end of 2010 not 2009 ... 276 already closed .... and usually closes 400 .... amazing the difference in info by reading the complete article...

Hmmm - are these 960 additional stores, or are they considering ones they've closed in the last few months as part of that? It's kind of odd but 2 of my regular stores already closed and both happened during B1G1 sales. One the last time a few months back and the other just this last week. They are pretty few and far between now so I can't imagine them shutting down too many more around here. Hopefully the one 1/2 mile from my house stays open but it is one of the smaller ones so who knows.

I have $6 in credit left and another copy of Wanted I could trade for $17. I'm wondering if it is worth the trouble though. If they do have another B1G1 sale it would be nice to start off with a bit of credit in advance but then again if there's nowhere convenient left to spend it...

I had a bit of a jolt at my local store yesterday. This store has had a stable of regular employees who have been well trained in the arts of taking game trades and selling used games (and applying the B1G1 properly). Well, last night there were two newbie employees in there together - I'd never seen either before. Needless to say it was somewhat of a hassle as the less knowledgeable one ended up being my cashier and he didn't know how to do trades, didn't know how to apply them to a Value card, didn't know where the used games were kept, and didn't know anything about the B1G1. Luckily I only bought 2 games (so I didn't have to instruct him on hitting total between pairs) ;).

Like IO, I wish it went on for another week or so to take advantage of the GS promo. Oh well, I did ok. Ended up with 3 flipped copies of Bukkake and about $20 leftover BBV credit and used about $25 in cash. Ended up with about $110 in GC credit and a copy of Metroid Trilogy and swag baseball cap.
I don't if someone has said this yet but the employee at Blockbuster said the next B1G1 sale will be around Christmas.
While that may end up being true, it seems highly speculative. I doubt a lowly clerk at Blockbuster would know such things. Hell, they usually don't even know when a current sale is happening.

they are talking out of their a$$. we dont get any communication til 1 week before.

Last Thursday I went into a store that had maybe 6 eligible games, I walked in today and they had multiple copies of FF: EoT, and many other good B1G1 eligible titles. Where were these last week? Boo at them. I cannot complain though, the sale was good to me.

Virtua Tennis 3 fell to $2 at GS, so it was ineligible for the 4/$20. I was able to return it, no problems for a refund.

I have a newbie question about trading at BBV. Do they accept game discs that are bundled with hardware? For example, Guitar Hero game discs that came bundled with a guitar or an American Idol game that came bundled with a microphone? It looks like these game discs do not have a UPC code so does that matter? If you can trade them in, do you have to trade in the hardware as well?

I have the same question about Gamestop, in case anybody knows the answer. (I'll ask that question in the Gamestop thread as well.)

Thanks in advance.

Its YMMV, but most BBVs require at least cover art with UPC so they can scan it. GS on the other hand often gets in disk only games and looks it up, but there are a lot of BBVs out there that wont look up the game.

Blockbuster to shutter up to 960 stores

A Securities and Exchange Commission filing has revealed Blockbuster's plans to close up to 960 retail store locations by the end of 2010 as it attempts to makes its operation more financially stable.

According to the company's filing, it plans to close all unprofitable stores, while refocusing its efforts "to improve four-wall profitability." To do so, the company first analyzed its over 7,000 stores to determine if they were profitable or not. A whopping 18 percent of Blockbuster's stores are unprofitable. The remaining stores are profitable.
Prior to making the decision to close some of its unprofitable locations, Blockbuster planned to close 280 to 300 stores as part of a grouping it calls, "normal closures." Stores added to the "accelerated closures" category will also be closed by the end of this year. According to Blockbuster, the number of accelerated closures will equal 300 to 385 locations.
Next year will be a slightly less active year for store closures. Blockbuster indicated in its SEC filing that 2010 will bring 100 to 125 normal closures and 130 to 150 accelerated closures. By the end of 2010, it expects to have closed 810 to 960 retail locations.
As troubling as that might sound, Blockbuster spokesperson Randy Hargrove said in a phone conversation that a certain amount of measured skepticism should be exercised. According to Hargrove, these figures are not guaranteed.
"All these stores are candidate stores," Hargrove said. "Although we may in fact close that many stores, if we can renegotiate leases or remodel stores to make them more profitable, that number might go down."
But Blockbuster's closure story doesn't quite end there. Further down in the filing, Blockbuster indicated that 275 to 300 stores are subject to the company's "lease mitigation/termination efforts." Another 250 to 300 stores might be converted into outlets. If successful, that would bring Blockbuster's grand total of rental store closures to 1,335 to 1,560, or up to about 22 percent of all the stores currently in operation.
Of course, there's a financial side to Blockbuster closing so many stores. The company claims that if it's successful in closing up to 960 locations, it can increase its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) by $50 million to $60 million.
Kiosks
Although Blockbuster plans to close several stores, the company's kiosk business is expected to grow.
In a separate filing with the SEC, Blockbuster reported that it currently has 497 kiosk units available to consumers in the U.S. It plans to have 2,500 units available by the end of 2009. By mid-2010, it hopes to have 10,000 kiosks available to compete with Redbox.
Hargrove believes kiosks will help his company turn a corner. He pointed out that even though some stores will close, the company's kiosks "will increase the points of distribution, thus getting our product in front of more people. This whole plan is part of a multiplatform strategy to get those additional points of distribution," he said.
Although that might be a silver lining for Blockbuster, closing about 1,000 stores can't be good for business. And considering the company's stock price is hovering at about $1.40, while Netflix's price is over $44 per share as of this writing, it might only spell more troubles for Blockbuster's market appeal.
Unfortunately for Blockbuster, the bad news just keeps on coming.
Updated at 4:14 p.m. PDT to include Blockbuster spokesperson Randy Hargrove's statements.

apparently BB might close up to 960 stores nationwide? I'm looking at you kunai...

This sucks. I'm finally turning a profit with my Blockbuster stock and now they announce this. If i were to sell, it wouldn't go through til the end of the day, so by then the stock is probably going to plummet again.

Thats what I get for buying stock on the premise of "Its only $1.20, how can it get any lower"...

A local bb told me they weren't taking in any more trades because they were closing up. Will have to drive further for the next b1g1

Is there 5 for $20 on movies deal still going or did that end on Monday too?
they already closed 2 of my local stores, shit at this rate they will have no stores left, maybe netflix should just buy them for their remaining stock.

That CEO is a jackass, what does he plan on selling next, shampoo !!
I saw some Netflix giftcards. In all seriousness, I'll be sad if stores close because I like going to the store to rent movies & buy/trade games as well and I don't have enough money to justify paying monthly fees for movies when I don't rent much to begin with while digital download prices for rentals are ridiculous.

I'm glad you didn't have any problems. I tried to return 2 games that I purchased to see if my kid wanted them. When I bought them the manager assured me that returns would be no problem. I came back the next day to return them and they told me that I couldn't return them -- that the 30 day guarantee only covered them if something was wrong with them.

I called BS and was forceful about the fact that they would accept them as a refund even if they had to call that manager and have him confirm it. I settled with the credit on a Value card but that entire experience did not leave me very pleased.

Blockbuster is a sinking ship. I canceled their Online service after being a member for 2+ years -- the repeated nerfs to the program killed it. I was always raving about how much better it was than Netflix, however no longer shipping items until in-store rentals are returned was the last straw.
