Welcome to the Official CAG Blockbuster/Gamerush video game deal thread.

Sadly, Blockbuster has cut down it's maximum trade-in value from $33-$35 to $25 or so and dropped all other values along with it. So welcome to the new world of Blockbuster featuring Gamestop trade-in prices (but without the Edge card and frequent trade-in deals to make it more appealing). Continue on if you feel like there is any need...

ALERT: Buy 1 Get 1 50% off sale through June 7th!

http://www.facebook.com/blockbusterinc?v=app_17037175766

Blockbuster is currently running a Buy 1 get 1 50% off sale. Below is a list of $14.99 and under games from the last sale just to give you an idea of prices. However, all games $4.99 and UP count for this sale. So, for example you could get God of War III for $39.99 and get half off New Super Mario Bros. Wii (also $39.99 normally).

What is this thread for?
The primary function of this thread is to discuss current trade-in and sale promos, post any trade-in values you have obtained, and discuss new and used game selection and availability. Please post trade-in values with the date of the trade (or quote) and system.

It is also permissible to discuss system availability, credit issues, etc. As long as it is related to game trades or sales at Blockbuster it is generally OK to discuss it here.

Unlike more tightly focused clearance threads, it is OK to discuss more general Gamerush/Blockbuster issues here as well as trade requests as long as they are kept to a minimum (and usually just during specific deals).

Due to the questionable stability of the Gamerush (and Blockbuster for that matter) brand, it is also permissible to discuss ways of converting credit from Blockbuster to other stores (ie, which games may be used for trading in to other stores such as Gamecrazy or EB/GS). As of right now, we have no indication of Gamerush's imminent demise, but given Blockbuster's ongoing financial difficulties we need to be aware of the possibility.

What is this thread NOT for?
Please do not discuss the flipping of games from one Gamerush store to another should another such opportunity arise (through trade-in deals). It is one thing to "play the market" with trade-in values from one chain to another (GR to GC to EB) - free market buy low/sell high and all that. But taking advantage of loopholes in a single store's policies/promos is frowned upon and has, in the past, led to trade-in bans from GR.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Blockbuster Game Trading Info
- You must sign up for a trade account in addition to your regular Blockbuster account
- You must sign up for a new trade account at every store you wish to trade at, even if using the same main account
- Trade-in credit can be placed onto your store account or onto a "Value" card
- Credit on store accounts can only be used at that one store
- However, credit can be transferred from the store account to a card at any time
- Value cards can be used at any location
- Clerks at one store cannot see your trading/purchasing history at another store via your account
- Gamerush stores often do not get new game stock until the Friday of the release week, thus a few days later than most retailers
- Depending on state law you may or may not get sales tax added to your trade-ins (and thus get more than normal). You will always be charged sales tax where applicable on purchases, even when using credit from a Value card.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gamerush vs. regular Blockbusters
All Blockbuster game-related discussion belongs here. Most threads created in the Deals forum will be merged in to here. There seems to be the impression by many CAGs that if they don't have a Gamerush store near them (see here for a list of GR stores: http://www.blockbuster.com/content/v.4.286.1.0/media/gameStoreList.pdf) then this thread does not apply to them. However, regular (non-GR) Blockbuster stores often run the same promos and generally have the same trade-in values. I'm going to elaborate on the last sentence as people apparently don't understand that when I say regular BB's have the same trade-in values as Gamerush that it means regular Blockbuster stores accept game trade-ins just like Gamerush stores.

The key differences:
- Only Gamerush stores sell used video game hardware and generally have a much wider selection of new hardware. Many regular BB stores had a PS3 bundle available over Christmas 2007 and since then they have expanded their hardware sales. As of right now (Dec 2008) most Blockbuster stores are selling PS3's, Xbox 360's, Wii's, and DS's. They do not sell PSP's. However, they have also started selling other electronics including Blu-ray players, portable DVD players, and digital picture frames. As a result of not selling used hardware, however, regular Blockbuster stores will not take hardware in for trades.

- Both Gamerush and regular Blockbuster stores take preorders for new games for a $5 deposit (or you can pay any other amount beyond that). Gamerush stores will get many more games in than the regular stores but unfortunately a preorder at either place is not a guarantee you will get the game. Sometimes they do not get certain titles in even if you preorder them months in advance. And even if they do get them, it tends to be a few days later than other stores.

- While many Gamerush stores have cut back on their new game stock, most regular (non-GR) Blockbusters have started selling new games. They usually have a very limited selection of top-selling new 360, PS3, and Wii games.

- Trade-in values are controlled centrally and are uniform across all Gamerush and Blockbuster locations EXCEPT if the Blockbuster is a franchise location. You can tell from the receipt if your store is a franchise store. All Gamerush stores are corporate-owned so they will have uniform pricing.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Featured Preorders
Most Blockbuster stores (in addition to Gamerush stores of course) are featuring several games for preorder. $5 is required for a deposit. There are a few others in addition to what is listed below:

Multiplatform
Beatles Rock Band
Madden 10

:360:

:ps3:

:wii:

:ds:

They usually get these featured games in on release day like any other game retailer (though note - as of late they have been very bad about this and have gotten many games several days late!). Note that you can preorder just about any other game as the system will allow them to preorder anything they have listed (yes, even at regular stores). I have preordered Mario Super Sluggers and Dragon Quest IV myself even though they are not "featured" as preorders. However, if it is not a featured preorder they may or may not get it in, and it may arrive as late as Friday of the release week (postscript - Mario Super Sluggers did indeed arrive on Friday when every other store had it Tues. or Weds. and Dragon Quest IV never arrived).

Of course you can cancel a preorder at any time and get your deposit back or switch it to another game, even after the game comes out. So don't worry about preordering something they might not get - you can always switch it to something else. However, since I've always used credit for purchasing things at Blockbuster I'm not sure how they would handle a cancellation of a cash deposit. They may simply issue a credit to your account so beware of that if placing a cash deposit on a preorder.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Current Trade-In Deals
There are no trade-in deals at this time nor have there been for a very very long time. They did however just recently cut down all their trade-in values to Gamestop-like levels (but without deals to make them more appealing as at GS).

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Trade-In Values
Trade-in price quotes will now be maintained by CAG Friend of Sonic in the THIRD post of this thread. The second post will continue to highlight specific games used to transfer credit from Blockbuster to Gamestop and vice versa.

Trade-in prices are usually universal at both Blockbuster and Gamerush, but can be wildly different at franchise Blockbuster stores. Used game prices change on Sunday with trade-in price drops following the next day (Monday). Thus any quotes given in this thread will almost certainly be good through Sunday of the current week. If you want to be sure to get the same value another CAG has reported then do your trading by Sunday as the price may drop on Monday.

Also note that many stores will no longer accept video games without cover art. This is the official policy for DVD trade-ins but apparently many clerks will confuse the two and not allow it for games either. Just beware that it might be a hassle if you have a disc-only game to trade.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gamerush website
The old Gamerush web site is now defunct, but the following link will take you to Blockbuster online, which may or may not have some info there about games. I dunno - I haven't looked at it in years.

Was at a Blockbuster earlier (Not sure what the location was, since it was the first time i saw it, but i know it was off of Great Bridge in Chesapeake VA)

They had some pretty good stuff for 360
2+ Pure 9.99
Dead Space 9.99 (I grabbed this)
2+ Earth Defence Force 2017 9.99
Far Cry 2 14.99
Buttloads of Mercenary 2 for 9.99
and atleast 20+ games under 14.99 (Including Onechambara, Armored Core 4, and some other stuff), was so busy looking at those games, i forgot to check the PS3 section. Planning to add a few of them to my collection tommorow

Anyone see any Avatar art at their Blockbusters yet? I have been looking but they haven't gotten any here yet, They have one for american McGee's Alice and I dotn even think that is filming yet!!!
They better start filming cus it comes out March 5th lol.
Wrong alice, I think.

Anyway more used game drops that take effect tomorrow. A lot of them, but very few of note, I only wrote a few down

:360::ps3:Fuel 9.99
:360::wii:Ghostbusters 9.99:hot:(I imagine ps3 as well, we don't have any copies and the price doesn't actually change till tomorrow) I finally grabbed a copy for my 360 =)
:360::ps3::wii:Beatles Rockband Software 24.99
:360:Red Faction 19.99, in this case it might only be 360, which would be weird, or our inventory is messed up on our ps3 copies...I should've checked before I left work.
:360::ps3:Overlord 2 19.99
:wii:Where the Wild Things Are 9.99

Most other drops were like 5 dollars and still priced way too high.

Hey guys, long time CAG but just recently checked out the BBV thread. How do TIVs usually compare with Gamestop? I've got a bit of BBV credit saved up but not enough for a $60 game.
Anyone see any Avatar art at their Blockbusters yet? I have been looking but they haven't gotten any here yet, They have one for american McGee's Alice and I dotn even think that is filming yet!!!
I think I saw an Avatar framed art poster at my BBV. I think it was this one
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_92LNZS6PQrY/StvdpNVe2nI/AAAAAAAAAuQ/jmM8g1_AMko/s400/Avatar+Poster.jpg

If I go back to that store, I'll check to see if that's where I saw it and let you know.

I'm sure he means overlord 2. I remember a year or 2 back the original overlord qualified for a B1G1 sale, which means it was $14.99 or under back then. So the 19.99 must be overlord 2. Hope this helps.
Ghostbusters worth it to buy or just rent?
At $9.99, buy. My son really liked it. He did beat it pretty quickly, but for the price of a rental vs a $10 buy, why rent?
Ghostbusters worth it to buy or just rent?
At my store, a game rental is $8 for 5 days I think, so I'd certainly pay the $2 extra to keep it. I owned it (day one), beat it, and traded it away while it still had some value. Gameplay wise, its pretty decent, but the game is worth more to fans of the Ghostbusters movies. Plays a bit like Gears of War but without a cover mechanic, and instead of blasting the crap out of aliens, you're trapping and disintegrating ghosts. I liked it. I think I may re-buy it if my BBV has one, since I have $6 on a value card.

The $9.99 deal is great compared to renting. Where I live a five day rental is $8.99! So, if you've never played the game before, paying $10.59 (after sales tax) is far smarter. Even if you only sell the game for $2, you come out ahead. And you get to keep the game for longer than five days! ;)

I dunno I was looking foward to the Ghostbuster game, I actually bought it day one and pre ordered and all, I was disappointed with the game. Well worth 10 bucks tho.

I just didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would. I had pretty high hopes for the story which I though was bleah at best.

While we are off the subject, I thought Ghostbusters was pretty fun, but I only had it while I was flipping a copy when it was still profitable. I played through a couple of levels but just found it very repetitive. There are these games now like this and Uncharted 2 where you are essentially playing between scenes in a movie. If you dig the movie then it's great, but if you don't want that type of playing experience it won't do it for you.

If I had gone a little further in the game I might have enjoyed it more, but that was the short end of it. Let someone else buy or rent it and borrow it.
These are some BBV TIVs from a few days ago. All for the 360. Maybe someone will find this information useful.

Damnation 15
Chronicles of Riddick 12
Wheelman 10
Wanted Weapons of fate 10
Velvet Assassin 10
I noticed something really strange with BBV TIVs today. I traded in Damnation for 17 and Chronicles of Riddick for 15 today. I traded them in at 2 different stores for 15 (damnation) and 12 (Riddick) a couple weeks ago.

I've never procrastinated and had TIVs go up in price at BBV. I'd be really grateful if you guys would help me investigate this a little further. I'm not getting my hopes up but it would be really nice if BBV gave all the TIVs a small bump up, so they could be a little more competitive with GS, Toys R Us, FYE, PlayNtrade, Hollywood Video, Gamecrazy, Amazon, etc.:applause:

So if you guys who work at BBV could do a little digging around in the computer for me, I'd really appreciate it. I'm 99.99999999% sure that all the stores I traded in are corporate and in the same district. I don't see how I could trade in Damnation for 15 and Riddick for 12 on two different occasions and then all of a sudden today they both went up to 17 and 15.

Also, to the person who asked about the Avatar framed art, I can confirm I saw it today. Two stores each had only one poster. It's $29.99 and it says "Blockbuster exclusive" in the upper corner. It's the same poster as the link I posted earlier, but I honestly couldn't tell if the face was Sully's Avatar or the female Avatar played by Zoe Zaldana. My advice is to look around at other BBV's because your store just might not have got one of these in. Hope this helps:)

Tempted on Fuel at $9.99 as it looked like it could have been good prior to release. But I've heard so many bad things about it that I still might pass. This was the same development team that made Dirt and Dirt 2, right? Hard to believe that they screwed up a game that bad (maybe gave it to their less-than-capable programmers).

Oh, and +1 for Ghostbusters. Good game, just been distracted by so many other games -- Darksiders and Bayonetta of late -- that I'm probably only 1/3 of the way through. At $9.99, it's a steal, particularly if you're a fan of the movies.

I saw Overlord 2 for $20, Ghostbusters for $10, and Beatles RB for $25 at my BB last night, so I can confirm prices. As a side note, about 2 weeks ago they had a lot of guides priced at $10 and I noticed they removed all those stickers so I think they're back up to full price.

A ton of guides did go back up in price yesterday. I saw that while printing the reprice reports. The only other games that dropped to $9.99 at my store were Lego Battles for the NDS and Where the Wild Things Are for 360. Everything else has been mentioned.

It's obvious that they included sales tax.

LUCKY DAY!My PS3 Beatles Rock Band rang up as PS2 Guitar Hero: Aerosmith. (She scanned the sleeve the disc was in, not the case)

:D

lol, you're funny. Please explain to me how $3.00 is sales tax on $12.00 and $2.00 is sales tax on $15.00. Thanks. LOLOL
Managed to track down a copy of Beatles: RB and Ghostbusters. Thanks for the heads up, Vortex!
Sure no problem. So very few deals a blockbuster most of the time =)

And I guess red faction only on 360 dropped to 19.99, the ps3 is still 24.99 I think. Rare to see one side of a multi-plat game drop, atleast for bbv. Still needs to go lower though..

I just picked up a PS3 copy of Ghostbusters, thanks for the heads up! One of my local stores still had them marked $39.99, so I definitely appreciated the info.

Actually, Red Faction is worth about $20-25, but it was not worth the full MSRP since there's not much to do after you beat the game.:cry:

The point is the price is not good because you can get it elsewhere cheaper, apparently on newegg right now, new I think?

I haven't really checked prices on it, since I already own it, but I wouldn't doubt that it's cheaper elsewhere since it's been out since August of 09 at least.

Anybody have the current TIV's for:

Saints Row 2 PS3
Mirrors Edge PS3
Excitebots Wii
Pikmin Wii
Metroid Prime Trilogy Wii
Sudoku Ball Detective DS

Thanks.

If nobody has anything, I will try to give them a call tomorrow morning.
Anyone see any Avatar art at their Blockbusters yet? I have been looking but they haven't gotten any here yet, They have one for american McGee's Alice and I dotn even think that is filming yet!!!
You can get them online now.
http://www.fpe-online.com/NEW_RELEASES/Avatar
(They sent out an email with a code for free shipping.)

Holy crap. Thanks for the link. There are so many awesome posters. What sucks is that a lot of those older posters have been 50% off or more in stores, but they're all full price online.

What's the free shipping code? Is it a unique one time use code that can't be shared?

Thanks again

Went back to another BBV today, found Fuel, Ghostbusters, and Fear 2 for only 9.99 on 360. (Only had enough for 1, so i grabbed Fuel since they only had one left). Gonna head back tommorow

Though, i was kind of ticked when i went back to another BBV and noticed they sold the copy of Armored Core 4 they had =/.

Man, I went into my local BBV for the first time in a couple months, and it just keeps looking worse and worse. I don't know why, but it seems like there's hardly anything even in the store anymore. It's so sparse and open, and it really seems like there are more movies to buy than there are to rent (and those are all overpriced, of course).

And if you're looking for an older, classic movie, say 1980's and earlier, just forget it. Maybe it's just a sign of the times, but it's all about the new releases now. Just kind of ironic that the old days of a rental store being a "library for movies", if you will, has been replaced by the practice of stocking 20 copies of the same 50 movies.

Also, they had all of their TVs which usually show the blu-ray commercials and movie trailers turned off, and it was dead quiet in there. It was just awkward. I felt like I was standing at someone's death bed. I can't imagine this store hanging in there much longer. Crazy how things change in just a year's time.

We do that sometimes because our thing is broken. It's either slightly too loud, or barely audible. And when you're pissed or annoyed, off/barely audible is always better =)

More people are interested in the crappy b(d...f) movies you get in every week than a classic 80's movie. That's just how it works. And older movies come back scratched/ruined constantly, it's impossible to keep up with compared to new releases and the extra 40-80 copies on hand.

Yeah, I kinda figured. Just an eerie feeling. As for the older movies, it was just kinda sad having that realization that the days of "Oh, wow...I remember that movie! Let's go rent it!" are long gone. I love Netflix, but if there's something BBV can do better, it's cater to those impulse nostalgia rentals. Granted, that's not a big audience...but neither are the people buying books or the circus peanuts that look like hotdogs.

You've got to remember, some of those 25+ year old movies you're craving had limited DVD availability. If they are out of print, it's not like BBV can order replacement copies from a warehouse somewhere. I'd actually argue the other side of this, and say this is another thing Netflix can do better than BBV, because they only need to carry a couple copies of those films at each DC to serve an entire region, as opposed to multiple BBV locations in a single city each trying to carry one copy.

Really, any B&M video store's niche these days is the "I want it now" market, the people who want to pick up a new release on the way home from work, or have a spur of the moment impulse to go browse and pick out a movie to have right away. Well, that and cheap used video games, which is why we're all following this thread, afterall!

You can always try the new program direct access. I assume this is national? For my location, it's a 4 dollar rental for a week of any movie we carry online mailed to your house and when you bring it in you'll get a discounted movie rental, 2$ for 5 days. Not really trying to promote it, it definitely has limitations and the cost isn't quite low enough to make it a big hit I think, but if you really are looking for some older stuff but don't already have some online subscription to bbv/netflix this is a possibility.

It always feels like BBV is playing the me too game and is late to the party. Until they come up with something that has a good price attached to it, works and is actually unique....

But the trick there is also doing something that RedBox doesn't do. That's where the upperhand with the older movies would come in. BBV's problem now seems to be that the areas they're trying to promote, other places do better and cheaper (Netflix, RedBox, GameStop). I get that they're almost grasping at straws at this point, but those are the times you've gotta get really creative.

Hell, at the rate BBV's are dying off, I'd almost take a gamble on EMBRACING the fact that they are a very retro concept, and stocking a larger supply of older items. They could even decorate the stores in such a way, to give you a little "blast from the past". Like you mentioned, though, a lot of those older items aren't in as great of supply, but I just don't see BBV digging themselves out of the hole by stocking the same movies as RedBox, but charging $1 more. Sometimes radical changes are needed.

Yeah, my point was needing something "that day". For my specific example, my wife was needing to rent an older movie for a class she's taking. We have Netflix, and she's already added it to our queue, but while we were out (dropping our current Netflix movie in the mail no less, haha), the thought of "hey, I wonder if BBV carries this" crossed her mind.

They didn't. So, we walked out with nothing, and we'll just wait for it to come in the mail. Of course, I can recognize that this was an unusual occurrence, but the irony of BBV trying to find ways to attract customers/compete with the new kids, but not being able to supply what the others can't give (at least right away) was interesting.

Thanks to steaming, Netflix can satisfy those impulses just as good and maybe even better. I think Netflix now offers more movies and tv series via streaming then a BBV b&m store has in stock.

I have a 3 disc Netflix account and it costs me after sales tax $18.01 a month. When you include streaming to my Xbox 360, Roku and various pc/laptops, BBV and HWV just can't compete. And if I really want something new and can't wait, Amazon has it available.

I don't know if anyone mentioned it yet but you can get Yakuza 2 for 9.99 used at blockbuster. I just went and asked the clerk if any stores were selling any copies and sure enough she found one. Might be useful to those that still need to play it before 3 comes out.

True, and they do to an extent. I mean, a Redbox machine carries, what, 50 titles maybe? 100 maybe? A BBV has got to carry at least a thousand or twp, I would guess. But they can't compete with Netflix and their 100k or whatever it is now. But you're absolutely right in that everything they do, someone is doing better, whether it's Gamestop, Netflix, Redbox, whatever. People here get a little excited about some of the framed movie art, because that's one thing you can't get at those places, but really, is that something to hang your hat one? All the other random stuff in the store, you can find cheaper elsewhere. No one denies that their market is shrinking and dying. They're trying to find ways to postpone the inevitable, and shrinking along the way. We're all just along for the ride, trying to get good deals while we can, until eventually, sometime in the next few years, the whole chain more than likely goes belly up.
