Welcome to the Official CAG Blockbuster/Gamerush video game deal thread.

Sadly, Blockbuster has cut down it's maximum trade-in value from $33-$35 to $25 or so and dropped all other values along with it. So welcome to the new world of Blockbuster featuring Gamestop trade-in prices (but without the Edge card and frequent trade-in deals to make it more appealing). Continue on if you feel like there is any need...

ALERT: Buy 1 Get 1 50% off sale through June 7th!

http://www.facebook.com/blockbusterinc?v=app_17037175766

Blockbuster is currently running a Buy 1 get 1 50% off sale. Below is a list of $14.99 and under games from the last sale just to give you an idea of prices. However, all games $4.99 and UP count for this sale. So, for example you could get God of War III for $39.99 and get half off New Super Mario Bros. Wii (also $39.99 normally).

What is this thread for?
The primary function of this thread is to discuss current trade-in and sale promos, post any trade-in values you have obtained, and discuss new and used game selection and availability. Please post trade-in values with the date of the trade (or quote) and system.

It is also permissible to discuss system availability, credit issues, etc. As long as it is related to game trades or sales at Blockbuster it is generally OK to discuss it here.

Unlike more tightly focused clearance threads, it is OK to discuss more general Gamerush/Blockbuster issues here as well as trade requests as long as they are kept to a minimum (and usually just during specific deals).

Due to the questionable stability of the Gamerush (and Blockbuster for that matter) brand, it is also permissible to discuss ways of converting credit from Blockbuster to other stores (ie, which games may be used for trading in to other stores such as Gamecrazy or EB/GS). As of right now, we have no indication of Gamerush's imminent demise, but given Blockbuster's ongoing financial difficulties we need to be aware of the possibility.

What is this thread NOT for?
Please do not discuss the flipping of games from one Gamerush store to another should another such opportunity arise (through trade-in deals). It is one thing to "play the market" with trade-in values from one chain to another (GR to GC to EB) - free market buy low/sell high and all that. But taking advantage of loopholes in a single store's policies/promos is frowned upon and has, in the past, led to trade-in bans from GR.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Blockbuster Game Trading Info
- You must sign up for a trade account in addition to your regular Blockbuster account
- You must sign up for a new trade account at every store you wish to trade at, even if using the same main account
- Trade-in credit can be placed onto your store account or onto a "Value" card
- Credit on store accounts can only be used at that one store
- However, credit can be transferred from the store account to a card at any time
- Value cards can be used at any location
- Clerks at one store cannot see your trading/purchasing history at another store via your account
- Gamerush stores often do not get new game stock until the Friday of the release week, thus a few days later than most retailers
- Depending on state law you may or may not get sales tax added to your trade-ins (and thus get more than normal). You will always be charged sales tax where applicable on purchases, even when using credit from a Value card.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gamerush vs. regular Blockbusters
All Blockbuster game-related discussion belongs here. Most threads created in the Deals forum will be merged in to here. There seems to be the impression by many CAGs that if they don't have a Gamerush store near them (see here for a list of GR stores: http://www.blockbuster.com/content/v.4.286.1.0/media/gameStoreList.pdf) then this thread does not apply to them. However, regular (non-GR) Blockbuster stores often run the same promos and generally have the same trade-in values. I'm going to elaborate on the last sentence as people apparently don't understand that when I say regular BB's have the same trade-in values as Gamerush that it means regular Blockbuster stores accept game trade-ins just like Gamerush stores.

The key differences:
- Only Gamerush stores sell used video game hardware and generally have a much wider selection of new hardware. Many regular BB stores had a PS3 bundle available over Christmas 2007 and since then they have expanded their hardware sales. As of right now (Dec 2008) most Blockbuster stores are selling PS3's, Xbox 360's, Wii's, and DS's. They do not sell PSP's. However, they have also started selling other electronics including Blu-ray players, portable DVD players, and digital picture frames. As a result of not selling used hardware, however, regular Blockbuster stores will not take hardware in for trades.

- Both Gamerush and regular Blockbuster stores take preorders for new games for a $5 deposit (or you can pay any other amount beyond that). Gamerush stores will get many more games in than the regular stores but unfortunately a preorder at either place is not a guarantee you will get the game. Sometimes they do not get certain titles in even if you preorder them months in advance. And even if they do get them, it tends to be a few days later than other stores.

- While many Gamerush stores have cut back on their new game stock, most regular (non-GR) Blockbusters have started selling new games. They usually have a very limited selection of top-selling new 360, PS3, and Wii games.

- Trade-in values are controlled centrally and are uniform across all Gamerush and Blockbuster locations EXCEPT if the Blockbuster is a franchise location. You can tell from the receipt if your store is a franchise store. All Gamerush stores are corporate-owned so they will have uniform pricing.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Featured Preorders
Most Blockbuster stores (in addition to Gamerush stores of course) are featuring several games for preorder. $5 is required for a deposit. There are a few others in addition to what is listed below:

Multiplatform
Beatles Rock Band
Madden 10

:360:

:ps3:

:wii:

:ds:

They usually get these featured games in on release day like any other game retailer (though note - as of late they have been very bad about this and have gotten many games several days late!). Note that you can preorder just about any other game as the system will allow them to preorder anything they have listed (yes, even at regular stores). I have preordered Mario Super Sluggers and Dragon Quest IV myself even though they are not "featured" as preorders. However, if it is not a featured preorder they may or may not get it in, and it may arrive as late as Friday of the release week (postscript - Mario Super Sluggers did indeed arrive on Friday when every other store had it Tues. or Weds. and Dragon Quest IV never arrived).

Of course you can cancel a preorder at any time and get your deposit back or switch it to another game, even after the game comes out. So don't worry about preordering something they might not get - you can always switch it to something else. However, since I've always used credit for purchasing things at Blockbuster I'm not sure how they would handle a cancellation of a cash deposit. They may simply issue a credit to your account so beware of that if placing a cash deposit on a preorder.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Current Trade-In Deals
There are no trade-in deals at this time nor have there been for a very very long time. They did however just recently cut down all their trade-in values to Gamestop-like levels (but without deals to make them more appealing as at GS).

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Trade-In Values
Trade-in price quotes will now be maintained by CAG Friend of Sonic in the THIRD post of this thread. The second post will continue to highlight specific games used to transfer credit from Blockbuster to Gamestop and vice versa.

Trade-in prices are usually universal at both Blockbuster and Gamerush, but can be wildly different at franchise Blockbuster stores. Used game prices change on Sunday with trade-in price drops following the next day (Monday). Thus any quotes given in this thread will almost certainly be good through Sunday of the current week. If you want to be sure to get the same value another CAG has reported then do your trading by Sunday as the price may drop on Monday.

Also note that many stores will no longer accept video games without cover art. This is the official policy for DVD trade-ins but apparently many clerks will confuse the two and not allow it for games either. Just beware that it might be a hassle if you have a disc-only game to trade.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gamerush website
The old Gamerush web site is now defunct, but the following link will take you to Blockbuster online, which may or may not have some info there about games. I dunno - I haven't looked at it in years.

got REALLY lucky actually didnt even know the store was closing. I was checking a FYE because they are clearancing their game section so i stopped in the local blockbuster around the area. and it was the second day of the clearance sale. bought about 40 games. mostly crap to trade in, alll of which gave me at least $5 back in cash/credit profit. called a few blockbusters and found that actually THREE more were beginning there closeout sales at the same time, pretty much repeated the process a dozen or so times. they were all 10%off ut alot of the games were games that would have never have made it to 30-40%off like SSBB, Mario SS, ratchet and clank Tools, GTA4-ps3, beautiful katamari, Marble mania, and pretty much whatever random game my local spot was giving me good value in tradein credit or cash.

Mega:

I was thinking the same thing when I read his comment. The number of games you can accumulate through CAG is absurd. Like many others, I keep spread sheets of my purchases, trades, CL sales, etc. But because of the number of games I deal with each month, I can't possibly remember what mid-level games I have without double checking. Sadly the death of HWV and possibly BBV will likely slow things down considerably.

This statement right here is why I'm glad I still buy games mostly to play (with obvious exceptions with harder to find games), although admittedly my collection is getting larger, and this sale isn't helping. I have really had to think twice about not buying games that are cheap but I know I won't play.

I'm with Selma on this one. Even if you have a large collection...just how large anyways? My collection is currently at about 620 titles spread throughout systems, with the most being on the 360, and I'd still know if I already owned the game or not. Maybe it helps that Ive played the games already.

620 games!
wow I thought my 34 games in 5 months was bad...now i dont feel so bad
lol

That makes sense. I know every record I bought because I played them all. I haven't played all my games though, it's embarrassing that I haven't played my XBOX copy of Beyond Good and Evil.

Picked up

PSP
Crisis core FF 7

DS
Lego rock band
marvel super heroes
and
Tinkerbell Treausure game (will toss this up on ebay--- couldnt find a 4th game at that tore LOL)

seems can toss these up on amazon right now for store credit and make the cash back

Tinkerbell 10
Marvel 7.50
rock band 9
26.50 + 1 game for 21 out of pocket :)

the ff game would stay with me since its imcomplete (no manual)

Dont feel like running to other stores

and with 12 games coming Tuesday via gamestop and another 6 coming probally by friday along with the at least 30+ ds games i want to play backlog i will pass on theother stores (cause im thinking about doing another Gamestop order tomorrow if the codes still work with using GOLDEN Sun for a preorder

I'm pretty sure I bought a couple of games at this sale that I already have - but I'm even worse in that I have yet to even check. I'm not even sure where they may be ;).

It doesn't help when I tend to gravitate towards playing the epic 100+ hour RPGs - games just pile up behind those like crazy. I also have 3 kids that I buy games for and they don't really play that many so they have a big backlog too ;).

So, no news of price drops today makes me think there won't be much going on tomorrow. I have to say I'm kind of relieved, actually - I need a break from BBVs. With the sale extended (we did hear that here, right?) maybe we can have some nice drops/conversions next week and just let this week be a break.

Luckily memory wise I can remember if I have a game or not, but that doesn't stop the backlog. I have the same bad habits, these massive rpgs...ugh. I'm in the middle of yakuza 3, FFXIII, Resonance of Fate, Mass Effect 2 and a couple hours into Magna Carta 2 and Dragon Age: Origins. That's so crazy. Atleast I'm doing ok at beating the shorter games like dante, bayonetta, and more stuff last year. Plan on running through a lot of my 10~ hour games whenever the 360 is back from microsoft.

Not that being long is bad but I quite enjoy the quick 10-12 hour romp some of these games provide.
Exactly - I need to go through about 7 or 8 of these shorter games before I start my next epic game (DAO, Magna Carta, Resonance of Fate, Disgaea 3, Valkyria Chronicles, etc - just a small sample of ones I have yet to play). But in the meantime I'm about to cross the 100 hour mark (granted, probably 10 of that was spent on pause) on FF XIII and have a ways to go...

100? Wow. I'm at like ...22? 25?(and yes I do like it ) Funny that I started playing XENOSAGA 1 ON MY PS2 FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER. Apparently when my 360 died I lost interest in my ps3, so what do you know, load up a long ps2 game to play. Kill me =/

Well, I'm grinding for the platinum. You can finish the story in 50-60, maybe less.

story took me less than 30 hours... and i plated in game time 94 hours realistic time like 140 hours lol

Excel sheet ftw. I had about 3,000 games to cateogorized, but when I finished it last year it was totally worth it. I just pull it up on my pocket-PC phone thing in Excel and I have it all sorted by system. I've saved myself from buying a lot of duplicates.

Proof or I call bullshit.
If you know what you got then you ain't got much.
Or I just pay attention.

I picked up
Web of Shadows 9.99 and
Jak The Last Frontier 6.99 for PSP

Quick question if some one doesnt mind answering.....

I tried loading up Jak TLF on my brothers PSP(since I dont own one). Anyways, his PSP1000 is modded and all that stuff and before the game would load it asked me for a system update before I could play the game. Is it ok to update or will it brick/ mess up the PSP??? I would hate to ruin a psp that I dont own.

it wont brick it but he wont be able to use his modded functions. Itd more or less turn it into a normal psp.

I sadly had my psp with lots of emulators and homebrew and then updated to play Valkyrie Chronicles. All that effort for nothing.
sorry its slightly off topic, but a couple of people have mentioned the Guy game, i have like 7 copies, 4 Ps2 and 3 Xbox all factory sealed by y-folds. I cant sell em on ebay, and I hate selling on amzon. if anybody is interested make me an offer
Be careful with that. I also had a copy of the game (but then gave it away). My buddy informed me that the game was pulled because a topless girl in it was underage. You wouldn't want to get caught up distributing "child pornography". I know you're legit, and tons of people sell them on Ebay. However, if the cops kicks in the doors of one of your buyer's (finds kiddie porn, and the copy you sold him of The Guy Game), things could get ugly for you.

Funny thing is, some GS' (and other stores) still carry it.
This will probably vary by store as well.
I don't know when they change, but TiV's guys, not prices, are done automatically through the computer system for all blockbuster corporate at once.

I don't know. I've got 125+ 360 games, and probably a couple hundred games from the NES onward, but I'm pretty sure I could tell you which games I do or do not own. My collection obviously isn't huge, but it's pretty solid.

Now, with my graphic novel collection, which is well into the hundreds, I find it much more difficult. It's easy to remember you own Wheelman on the 360, not so easy to remember whether or not you own Hellboy Volume 8 or Ultimate Spider-man Volume 10.

For me, (and this is why I made my previous comment), I've had some games multiple times. For example, I had saints row 2 a few different times but always ended up trading it in. Then I got a copy from the HWV sale for $5 but when I bought it for $5 I wasn't sure if I still had a copy or not. I figured for $5, I was going to risk having more than one copy because I realized that it would be gone by the time I got back to HWV. It's games like this that can be confusing for me because those are the types of games that I often use to fiinish off a tiered trade.

Off topic - I dont know how you guys keep all your games and then store hundreds of games. Not for me, but god bless you. If I kept all the games I ever bought from Atari days to the present I would have to have a separate room just for storage. But since the early days I realized I could not keep something sitting around if I could use it to feed my habit for new/better game experiences. Wish I knew that some games would become crazy valuable, but thats a crap shoot.

On topic - I started looking late, but havent seen squat left at the BBVs in my area.

I talked with a guy who works at my BBV. We've been on a first-name basis since a few days after B1G1 started, and was happy to share the transfer list with me. The only two games that got added at my store that qualify for the promotion are G-Force for DS and My Sims Kingdom for the Wii.

I found jack and shit at the last BBV I'm checking during this sale. None of the stores by me had anything I really wanted from this sale(and I haven't even been keeping track of the list in the OP much since it started). I just have too many games I need to complete(Sacred 2, Afrika, etc, etc, etc)and just don't have the desire to be bothered to flip to GS from this sale.

Then again, anything flippable was wiped out early and never restocked through conversions, so that may be it.

The only game I saw today that I'd give a whirl via B1G1 is Eat Lead for PS3, but I couldn't find anything to pair with it that I wanted, so I left it behind.

I finally bought my first two games from Blockbuster today. Beatles Rockband and Timeshift. There wasn't much to pick from so I grabbed Timeshift on a whim.
Can I return these two games or is that not possible?
I can get a Beatles Rockband new for $10 instead.

you aren't missing much by skipping eat lead. i platted it and it was painful. never buy a game if the main selling point is how funny it is. and i love will arnett and neil patrick harris(?) but really...voice acting does not make a great game. get uncharted 2 instead...

You can as long as you tell them it doesn't work and you do it fairly quickly after you bought it. I actually did that because I bought like 4 games from them, then they decided to to the B1G1, and two of the games I bought price dropped.

Thanks I'll give it a shot today.
Where can you get a new beatles rock band for 10 bucks?
Target clearance.

so i'm semi bummed because over the course of this sale I've nabbed

Brutal Legend 9.99 + Hawx 15 = 15
COD WAW 6.99 + Halo Wars 15 = 15

It ended up this way because of the selection at each store where I found the pairs... anyone think or actually have a store allow a return/rebuy to rematch the b1g1? would save me $5.. which it would be worth it since I plan on checking out a few more stores around b4 the sale is over..

now I'm not bummed on finding on the selection i found.. just being on cag you know I want to maximize my game cheapiness

thoughts? suggestions? let me know.. not sure if it would be worth the headache for $5

Hijacking your thread derail: Buy games that are low in print run, and highly rated, for ANY system. Sit on them for 10 years = Jackpot.

My wins over the years and sell prices:
Tengen Tetris for NES (recalled): $100 used (paid $30 new)
Super Puzzle Fighter PS1 (short print run): $50 used (paid $20 new)
Dreamcast Ethernet Adapter (limited availability): $150 used (paid $80 new)
Sega Master System with 3D GLASSES: used $150 (new $75)
Snatcher Sega-CD: don't recall what I sold this for.

Lucas Arts PC-CD Talkies: Day of Tentacle, Indiana Jones, Monkey Island,
Paid ~$10 for all 3 new, sold them NEW about 15 years later for $175!

I've often bundled good games with shit systems to up the package price. Super Street Fighter II w/Capcom 6-button controller, Star Control, and Lucienne's Quest helped sell my 3DO for ~$250. I seem to recall having some good bundled games when selling my Sega Nomad too.

Still have Unopened Conker's Bad Fur Day Reloaded Xbox. Paid $8, now worth over $100. I just found this out when I ALMOST opened it on April 15th to see if XBL had any DLC for it. Thankfully I plugged it into ebay first.

Sitting on a complete copy of MVC2 for Dreamcast too, lost a little value after DLC releases, but still one of the best ports of the game and pretty rare.

A friend of mine had the US version of Panzer Dragoon Saga bought new, only 30k released in the USA, he would not sell it :) Radiant Silvergun and Guardian Heroes were some other valuable Saturn Title. I never had a Saturn :(

If you didn't own these titles when they were in circulation your best bets are garage sales, pawn shops, flea markets. Places where people don't know the values.

"Hey, I'd like to return these games."
"Why?"
"They don't work."
"Okay, here's your money back."
"Thanks, I'd like to buy back those non-working games, please."
