Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Plus the narrator came back? It's like they're making sure I never get it lol

Is there a patch to take him out? I would probably be in on the next sale if that was there (or not there, depending)
Haha, get it guys? Because he doesn't like the announcer? Haha!

So yay, free weekend of Killing Floor and it is currently broken. Search for internet games takes forever and finds none. Glad I didn't buy it outright the numerous times it was on sale.

You do realize the narrator (and soundtrack) make up much of the charm this game has, not to mention nearly all of the story is delivered through the narrator. Take those away and you've got a very mediocre and unmemorable hack and slash.

Yeah iv only seen 2 people out of maybe 1,000 say they dislike the narrator.

You're glad you didn't buy it because it happens to be having some issues during the free weekend?

Doesn't make much sense to me and from me actually owning and playing it for two years I know this isn't a recurring issue.

This...is...awesome. I was playing a bit last night and kept thinking the gates are a pain. But I intend to finish it...with god mode. I'm just one of those impatient people that want to finish it and don't have a lot of time. I wasn't even going to buy this except that it was so cheap a few weeks ago too.
Not only is Oblivion an amazing experience, but you can make it so so so much more with a little (actually a lot) of modding. I had never done any PC modding before, but I picked up Oblivion GOTY deluxe last time it was on sale and then I followed everything in this guide:

http://www.somethingfornobody.com/2011/oblivion-modding-guide/

You would not believe the difference it makes. It changes probably about 10,000 things in the game for the better, including removing most or all of the crashing and bugs, making everything look better (much much much better), improving the gameplay in just about every way, and introducing so much variety and other things to make the game more interesting and believable that IMO it is a better buy than Skyrim, even if they were the same price. Of course it doesn't help that they seem to want to destroy Skyrim with each new patch.
Gah, stop putting Oblivion on sale! It was hard enough not to pick it up the first few times, this is just cruel and unusual. I don't have time, I know I won't ever play it, so why must you taunt me so?!?!

Thank god I really really really can't stand the leveling system, and know that I won't put the time into it to make modding the leveling system out worth it, otherwise I'm sure this would have been bought a while ago.

Still, so very very very tempting.
Think Ill continue to wait on Oblivion. Hoping for a $5 Fallout 3 GOTY
I'm gonna pass on Oblivion but I want a cheap Fallout 3 GOTY as well. I was figuring I'd buy it at $10, it was 10 at Direct2Drive yesterday but I'd rather get it from Steam and from what I've heard it'll be easy to eventually find it cheap during one of the Steam sales.

Was tempted to get Oblivion, but it seems everyone I know vastly prefers Skyrim over it. It's only $5, but can't help but feel that's $5 better spent on getting Skyrim later down the road, and I'm only kidding myself if I think I have to time to get around to playing both.

Yeah I wouldnt be surprised if you see it on sale here soon.

Agreed. Oblivion + mods = a great RPG. I have to disagree with anyone that does not feel the phenomenal price of $4.99 for the GOTY edition is not worth it, or those that feel Skyrim is so damn good that it renders this obsolete.
It's a good time to own Bastion on Steam.

Stranger's Dream is coming to Bastion next week. Steam users get it free while 360 owners have to pay $1.
Hell yes! I have it for both platforms, so I am ecstatic to hear that:

- Bastion DLC is coming (didn't even consider it would be for some reason)
- Free on Steam
- A very affordable $1 on XBLA (yes, I will be buying it here as well even with the freebie on Steam)

I did not enjoy Oblivion. The city designs are completely nonsensical and extraordinarily frustrating to navigate, especially the central one (Citadel or something?); difficulty was all over the place; the enemies in the wild would follow you for fucking AGES; and the AI for enemies was weird. Plus, the charming system or whatever that is in place to make conversations available if your conversation skill is low is just stupid and tedious. There is a lot to the world, but I didn't want to wade through the crap in my way to enjoy it.

As much as I'm tempted to snag Oblivion I just can't bring myself to do that now when I'm enjoying Skyrim. Eventually though.

Man I can't wait for the winter sale. Hope it doesn't disappoint.

I'm finding this interesting... now that Skyrim is out, there isn't a lot of backwards-looking love for Oblivion, the way that there was backwards-looking love for Morrowind when Oblivion was released. I think history will prove Oblivion the weakest link of the modern TES games. Despite the amazing mods.

Is the Deluxe version of Oblivion a waste? No one seems to mention it. I'm also a little scared off since everyone says Morrowind is way better (which I have the hard copy and haven't played yet haha).

Oblivion is terrible compared to Morrowind, Skyrim is a lot more fun, but Morrowind has more content it feels like, but that might be because how overly-complex Morrowind is at times.

If you're buying Oblivion, the Deluxe package is worth the extra couple of bucks.

I get the love people have for Morrowind and Skyrim, but it doesn't make Oblivion a terrible game. Oblivion+mods is really wonderful for fans of the genre. If action/RPG is your thing and Oblivion is at all interesting to you - this is the buy price. It's unlikely to get much cheaper. It will go on sale again, most likely, but if you don't pick it up by Christmas you may be waiting until summer to see it go this low again.

I'd say to go w/ Oblivion - Deluxe GOTY Edition, so you have the 9 DLC's.
Seriously, it's worth the extra $1.24 for all of that content.

Plus, you'll have ALL the official content for Oblivion from BethSoft, if you go Deluxe.

Thanks guys, I'll go with the Deluxe. I definitely respect the hardcore-ness of Morrowind, but with my time restraints and that I usually play a mutliplayer game with my wife, it may be a negative for me. Oblivion will probably be too much anyways :)

To be fair, Oblivion still isn't a bad game (I've seen a lot of folks on forums calling it crap now, and I think that's a bit much) and some of the mods are fantastic, but still, right out of the gate, it just feels like Skyrim is a much stronger game overall. With mod tools coming out next month, it's only a matter time before the game gets it's own rich modding community as well.

I think ideally, people should check out Oblivion first (with some key mods of course) and then play Skyrim. Not because it's necessary for the plot, but because Oblivion is still a solid RPG and once you play Skyrim, you probably will have a hell of a time trying to go back to Oblivion. But on the flip side, I get people have huge backlogs/lack of time to play 2 fairly lengthy RPG's, and for them, it probably just makes sense to skip Oblivion and go directly to Skyrim.

I think the problem is that many of the most hyped WRPGs are ranted and ranted about and no one really sees their flaws because they are so excited about the big immersive world. A few years later when the next biggest open world experience comes out suddenly everyone can see all the last games flaws that a year or two before they ignored or down played.

So tempted to buy Oblivion... I've always wanted to try it out with all the awesome mods out there. But I just don't have the time to install them all, let alone to play the game throughout. My backlog is too huge and I'd rather save up for Skyrim as well.

As much as I'd like to try Oblivion, I want Skyrim way more. I know I'm not likely to play two similar huge games in the same franchise. And considering I should be getting Skyrim soon, I know I won't be able to go back to the previous entry after experiencing Skyrim.

I still put a TON of hours into Oblivion, probably more than any other game (though the only competition would be Daggerfall and Morrowind and eventually Skyrim). It does have some issues, but that doesn't make it a bad game. That said, some of Skyrim's improvements (like leveling) are so awesome I'm not sure I'd want to go back to any previous ES game after it. That doesn't make any of them bad games, it just makes Skyrim a really good one.

That's how i feel. $6.24 is an amazing price for the deluxe edition but after playing Skyrim i don't think i could go back.

I recently picked up Morrowind again after having lost my hard copy and I really enjoy it so much more than Oblivion. I recommend if you enjoy Oblivion, pick up Morrowind whenever it is on sale again and put a good graphics overhaul mod on it. It looks amazing and has in my opinion better gameplay and story.

I would say no to purchasing L4D1 if you already own the second. They've already ported several (if not all) of the maps over to L4D2 for free, so unless you want to play those maps w/o melee weapons and the different gun selection, there's really no reason to pick it up. And btw, if you don't already own L4D2, pick it up. Easily one of the best games I've ever played, period.

You can go back to previous Elder Scrolls games no problem. Just get some good mods and it will be for a good time.

Quite personally I enjoy Morrowind much more than Oblivion. I played Morrowind on the original X-box so I am still looking for a cheap Steam copy. Oblivion feels I guess generic is the word I am looking for. The world of Oblivion to me felt too generic fantasy and the whole game itself was alright but there was nothing to make it stand out. Morrowind while the combat is dated, I just feel is better overall, so much so that I would rather play that than Oblivion. Plus I really love the scenery of Morrowind, and I might say even though Skyrim looks way better graphically, I might just enjoy the dark swampy world of Morrowind better.
never played both L4D and L4D2, any reason to get both? or just get the 2nd?
Meanwhile, just a couple of posts above...
Does this answer change at all if you want to enjoy the games via SP? in other words, do I miss out on a SP experience at all by not owning L4D1 as well?

thanks for the response!

What are the single-player campaigns like in the L4D series? I know a lot of people like them for the multiplayer, but if I'm unlikely to play online, are the single-player games worth it?
Playing L4D single player is the same as multi player, just with AI teammates. There are no separate SP/MP campaigns.
Er, no it's not because in single-player you don't play as the special infected. You can through some console commands/cheats, but it's not the same thing as playing against human survivors.

As someone who's logged over 1000 hours in each game, my advice is that if you're going to play mainly single-player, skip L4D1. All the maps (save one survival map) have been ported over to 2. The only real reason to play the first game in multiplayer is to experience the joy of the 4-cap, which means having a team of 4 special infected that can incapacitate at the same time (i.e. hunter and smoker combinations), which doesn't happen in L4D2.

To be fair, the AI can be really stupid at times. Whether this makes it different from a multiplayer experience depends on how stupid your friends are.

thanks for the info, getting l4d2 only then.

Single player L4D will not have much replay value. Playing with bots is okay the first few times, but the main draw of this game is utilizing teamwork and coordination with real players. At only 5 bucks I think you'll get your moneys worth though.

They have ported all of the L4D1 maps to L4D2 at this point, other than the little 2-map Crash Course. That said, the atmosphere on L4D1 is better IMO. The game is darker than L4D2. Even the L4D1 maps that were ported into the 2nd one aren't as dark and dreary.

Now, is that worth $5? Hard for me to say since I bought L4D1 and 2 when they first game out. If I owned L4D2 I am not sure if I'd spend $5 on L4D1 just for a darker atmosphere.

Crash Course has also been ported over. I'm not sure that the ported maps are less dark and dreary than their original versions, either. It might just feel that way in contrast to the daytime L4D2 maps.

Do the campaigns have decent stories? I know that seems like a silly question but I would mostly be single player and it would be good to know.

Almost no story, other than a group of survivors trying to get from X to Y.

If you have any interest AT ALL in zombie shooters, buy this, even for SP.

I haven't played the game in 3 months, so I assume Crash Course being ported over is a recent thing. The last time I played it, Death Toll had just been ported.

I guess we will have to agree to disagree on the darkness of L4D1 vs L4D2, unless I get the gumption to take in game photos to show the difference. The lighting in L4D2 is brighter across the board. Obviously you have the day time maps but the night time maps aren't as dark as the maps on L4D1, either. It is a pretty common complaint about L4D2.
