Wii FAQ 1.5 *ATTN MODS: PLEASE LOCK BUT LEAVE STICKIED FOR NOW, THANK YOU!!*

I have a quick backwards compatibility question if anyone knows.

If you load up a GC game into the Wii and you have the component cables for the Wii, can the GC game run in progressive scan or can you only use standard 480i when using the BC features? Also, does having the Wii in 16x9 stretch a 4x3 GC game at all? Thanks in advance to anyone who answers.

So can I send a Mii and have it show me as creating it?
Yes. To do this, go into Mii Plaza and choose the option to send a Mii to someone. You choose a Mii, choose a recipient from your Address Book, and off they go.
Note: If you message someone directly and attach a Mii, it doesn’t actually send the Mii. It only sends their face as a sort of picture attachment.

It actually does send the Mii as well, people that I have Wii-mailed by attaching the Mii to it have received them.

This will make having people get your updated Mii a non-issue if you contact them on a normal basis, as I personally tend to attach my Mii character to each Wii-mail I send.

Yeah, I've yet to go into the Mii Channel to send a Mii, they always get it from being attached to the mail.

I've also been sent a Mii this way as well, after reading the mail, if I go into the Mii Channel it'll say "Blah has sent you a new Mii."

I have no CAGers on my list, want to give it a shot botticus?

My code: 1444 6531 9995 3785
I will add you this evening... I think I've ignored a bunch of PMs to add anyway, so that will get me off my ass to do it.
Haha, alright. I already added you.

Yes, you can run GC games in progressive scan on the Wii. Having it in 16x9 does stretch a 4x3 GC game as well, at least I noticed it did for LOTR: ROTK. Haven't tested it with others, but my guess is that it does.

Hey guys,

Sorry for the lack of an update. I might get to it today, but I really doubt it, what with the holidays and all.

In addition to all the new information I'll add, I'm going to split it up into 3 parts, create a new thread, reserve three spots so that I can not worry about expansions, and go from there.

Just a heads up! And thanks for all the encouragement! :D

Sincerely,
Strell

That's cool, I don't think any of us expect you to be updating it right now. ;)

Last night, we hooked up the online router to our Wii, so now its online. When my bf woke up last night, the blue disc slot was on in the middle of the night, and it lit up our entire room. It pissed him off, so he held down the power button until it turned off. I guess its was just "the system is in the process of exchanging data with other systems or the central servers."
the blue light means there's either a message or update waiting.
Yeah, I think it just pissed him off. He said it was really bright. Turning it off makes it go away though.
edit. I just looked at porn on my Wii over the internetz

Isn't it great?

I feel so dirty viewing porn on a NINTENDO product!....meh!

The Zoom in feature, FTW

I didn't even know about the zoom feature. I'm guessing its the "+" button or something.
I didn't download that Wii Video 9 Converter yet, I just went to PornoTube.com and got a good laugh in, along with a few "Wii" jokes.

just curius about something, and didn't see it mentioned (or my blind ass missed it)

when i have my 3rd party gc memory card plugged into my wii, i can not get a wireless connection. removing it connects me instantly. it's an interact brand card, but i assume it's made by datel as it works with the action replay.

anyone else with this issue??
For those complaining of a warm Wii (lol), do you have your Wii sitting vertically or horizontally?

If you have the Wii standing vertically, the air intake vent is on the bottom of the console. You need to make sure that when you put the Wii into the base, that the intake is lined up with the cutout in the base so that there is proper air flow. Even with it lined up properly, it is going to be less efficient than having the console horizontal.

With the console sitting horizontally, the air intake is at the back of the unit and has no obstruction to air flow. I would be curious if there is a heat difference depending on which way the Wii is sitting.
I've tried positioning it both ways (in a well-ventilated area) and it's still pretty warm when WiiConnect24 is on. Is this common? I usually cover my consoles with a soft towel when I'm finished playing to keep the dust away, but covering the Wii makes it even warmer.

Yeah, I think so. The left side of my Wii is warm, while the right side feels cool.

I really wouldn't cover your Wii, it'd be better to leave it out in the open.

Hope I'm not stepping on anyone's toes by doing this, but the last page edit was around a week ago, so I went ahead and ported the guide over to the wiki. I'm sure there's a handful of things I missed (especially a good number of italicizings) but the core of it is there. The table of contents is damn long though.

I just got a message sent to my Wii by Nintendo, telling me the Forecast Channel goes live today.

Then, they tell me I can update and get it, but the update finds nothing.

Anyone else get the message, and having trouble getting the update? Or did your update go through?

EDIT: Actually, I'm not even sure why I got this message. I've had the Forecast Channel. For some reason, I was thinking this was for the News Channel, even when I read the message and typed Forecast Channel.

Still, am I the only one getting this message, or what?

I'm guessing that you haven't had your Wii online since just after getting the Forecast Channel? I got that message the next day and I've found out that messages that are sent to you while your Wii isn't online will appear shortly after you get it connected back onto a WiFi connection.

I have extreme doubts about this. I've had friends try to do that, but nothing happens until I ask them to just send the Miis from the Mii Plaza.

Yeah, I was incorrect about that. You have to send the Mii via the Mii Channel.

Not sure what the limit is, but the Wii doesn't like long text entry. My post about the DSL soft case about choked and it wouldn't allow anymore typing. In fact it started to get slow and funky with random cursor jumps.

Eh. I had actually planned on porting it over, but Strell had asked me to wait until he completed version 1.6. :/

I suppose now that some of it is there, I'll clean it up later on when 1.6 rolls around.

can someone explain to me exactly what the Mii Plaza is? What's the difference between that and the place all the other Miis go to? And why do some Miis sent to me go there while others only go to the other place? I forget the name.

Mii Plaza is where Miis go that you either create and save to your machine -OR- someone on your buddy list sends directly to you. So when I sent my Strell Mii to you directly, it ended up in your Plaza. You can get 100 Miis here.

Mii Parade is where Miis set to Mingle go to. After you've established connection with another user (both your names are black), any Miis you set to Mingle go to their Parade and vice versa. So if I set my Costanza Mii to Mingle, he'll appear in other peoples' parades. I don't know if there's a limit to the number of Miis here - I had 400 someting last I checked.

And I love that Costanze one, by the way. My wife laughed for about 5 minutes at it.

So, what will the Mii Parade be for?

Might get more functionality down the line, but it's kinda for fun at the moment. Also, lets you share/display your Miis without taking up the Plaza 100 limit. I.e., someone can look at what other people have made and decide to move them over to the Plaza. So it's like a morbid way of judging whether or not a Mii is good 'nuff for your Plaza.

I think Tanuki said he uses the Parade as a screen saver.

It would be nice if they added in dumb stuff to do in the Parade. Like...dopey little foot races or something. Or maybe a very limited Sims element - you could give them toys to play with, like molotov cocktails and puppies. And then give them a house to put it in.

I dunno.

A screensaver? I have no clue how I'd even do that. I just checked mine and there are 527 Miis in there.

Someone said they just leave it running. Like a screen saver.

Not like a SS in a useful way. Just leaving it there.

Much like how one might leave the game on the weather channel just to listen to the soothing music.
Can I copy downloaded VC games onto a wii, copy them to an SD card, then copy them to a different wii?
No. VC games are tied to your system.

Some things I've learned over the course of selling my Wii:

--There is no way AT ALL to transfer VC games. They are licensed to you and your console and once you delete your account, they're considered gone. Under different conditions, like if your Wii crashes, there's a possibility that Nintendo will help you out. But in talking to a rep, I was told they are completely, strictly, mandatorily (if that's a word), non-transferable.

--When you get rid of a system, you should be aware that you need to go into the Wii Shop Channel and follow some steps to delete your account, which holds your CC info. Initializing the console will not erase that private info. All initializing the console does is erase game saves, the address book, Miis, etc.

--When you erase your Wii shop account, your VC games are no longer playable on that system. You can't erase your account, initialize the system and load up the games for the new owner. So don't be a dumbass like me and advertise that the system comes with VC games ;)

--Wii points are also not transferable at all.

Guess I won't be selling my console at any point. :D

But correct me if I'm wrong: If you don't store your credit card info and/or link to MyNintendo, no formatting is really required, is there? You could then sell it with VC added value (games, points, whatever's sitting on there).

I guess so. The CC# is the only reason I can think of to format the system.

I'm wondering if you can just edit the name and CC info to switch it over to the new guy that way. can't check since i can't get into the shop channel at school >_

I guess if I buy a Wii, I will not be buying any of the VC games as I usually like to buy from a place with a 1-2 year warranty and replace the console before the warranty expires and then renew the warranty for the future.

I thought that the Xbox Live way of forcing you to log on to your account and not be able to play any of the games you bought offline once you redownload them on your replacement console was bad. But I guess Nintendo just wants to get some more money by making you rebuy the VC games. They should make them much cheaper if that is the case though.

I'm sure this has been answered in here somewhere but what's the deal with Gamecube games on the Wii playing in 16:9 stretched mode? Is there a way to avoid this or do I have to screw with my TV settings (put it back to 4:3) every time I want to play a Gamecube game? I just popped in a Gamecube game for the first time the other day and noticed this - I've had the Wii since launch!

Which Gamecube game(s) are you playing? Widescreen settings on GC games depend on the game itself having such an option on its settings/options menu.

On the topic of show length - I tend to burn my copy to CD and play it for the morning drive time (and various other times). I tend to listen to each show 2 or 3 times that way.

So I vote for keeping the show at 80 minutes or less... cause that's how big a CD is.

I'd certainly love to get a copy of Phoenix Wright. I've actually purchased 3 copies of the original (one for myself and two for my friends) and would love to get ahold of one of the ones Wombat is getting.

Love the show, though my questions don't get asked.

My Wii power light situation has now been cleared up.
Colors are correct as listed in the manual EXCEPT for the fact that they leave out WiiConnect 24's "Stanby" option.

On = Green
Off With WiiConnect24 & standby On = Orange
Off With WiiConnect24 On and Standby Off = Red
Off With both WiiConnect24 & Standby Off = Red

Attention Everyone:

I will be making an update to this FAQ tonight, probably in the very early morning. I am going to try and secure the first 5 posts for expansion sake, even though I doubt I'll ever need more than 2.

I will ask a mod at that time to delete this thread.

I will be looking through the last several pages of this thread for additional information to be added, and have already skimmed the last month and a half of information in the Wii thread.

I will also be adding information from NWR and will link them there to here, because their forum isn't as robust as ours, and I got tired of always having to reformat everything.

Just a heads up.
