Free stuff:
There are quite a few free games (mostly Free to Play) and mods available via the Steam platform, a comprehensive list of which can be found in this thread on the SPUF.

Heads up, they must be out of Anarchy Editions at Newegg, because last time I bought one I got the standard.
Also for all you Civ fans, if I have the base Civ 5 game and I want all the DLC, all I need is the Gold Upgrade and G&K, correct?
iirc, no, missing scrabled nations and something else at least

Gold upgrade doesn't include Brave New World, nor some of the map packs. Although the latter are unnecessary, since there are tons of custom maps on the Steam Workshop.

Yeah, I really enjoyed it on Xbox 360 and was wanting to play it again. I've only gotten into PC gaming this year. It's something I'm wanting to play in the next couple weeks or so, so definitely wanting to pick it up sooner rather than later. Not just to backlog :]
This guy has the game/the DLC on sale for $4/$0.50, Steam versions. I was thinking about grabbing it but I totally would have backlogged it for a decade or so; you seem like you need it more.

Anyone know if GFWL is gonna be removed from Ms. Splosion Man? I'm somewhat interested in picking it up with some of my GabeN funbux. But not if it's gonna be unplayable in short order.
I'd love to know the same thing, but I think the real answer is nobody has any idea at the moment. I'd like to think that Microsoft would patch GFWL out of everything since its their service that failed but I'm not delusional enough to think that will actually happen.

I'm in the same boat though. I've wanted to play it for a while, but the idea of paying for a game that might not work ever again in a few months turns me off. I think I'll probably just wait and see what happens after GFWL shuts down and grab it after if it is fixed.

Civ V gold upgrade is nice if you don't have G&K.  Though BNW adds everything you need from G&K anyway IIRC.  BNW gets you better.  If you've already got Civ V and want BNW, check out GreenManGaming.  It's $1 or so cheaper BEFORE you enter in the 20% voucher on the main page.

I enjoy the game quite a bit but I agree it does get old after a while.

i love you

EDIT: Guy already responded AND I got my key. I even looked at his post earlier today and read right over Rage. Jeez.

Ashes, why are the Need for Speed games rated so high by critics, and mediocre at best by the community? Worth it at $5?
Because the internet is stupid, did you really need to ask?

it too hard, u die alot no fun.
Super Meat Boy, Dark Souls, and bullet-hell shooters disagree.

I also disagree, as usual.

Spoder claimed Spectromancer.

Jericho was used. ninjaculate took Jericho

Little Farm was used.
Do you want Little Farm? <--offering

...I still can't decide if I want to pick this up or not...
(I only played a bit of BTR1)
I liked BTR1 but certainly wouldn't recommend it to everyone do to the high difficulty level. BTR2 on the other hand is amazing, and I feel really bad about forgetting about it in my "Favorite Games I Played This Year". It does everything the original did great and tops it, with better controls, more moves, multiple difficulties (and checkpoints if you are so inclined), more varied and interesting level designs, and so so much dancing.

It's extremely fun and most certainly worth it at that price if you enjoyed the original even just slightly.

it might be a daily or flash before the sale's over

the current price doesn't change the fact that that's possible
for the record, the price for the physical edition is also a sale, and would go up , which I could miss out on in the event I waited for a flash sale that didn't happen

Best Buy appears to have a 5% off sale running on Steam Wallet cards-- $20 card (sku 6576811) for $19, $50 card (sku 6577073) for $47.50, $100 card (sku 6577204) for $95. It's not a huge break, but combined with this sale helps!

the wonders of CAG 3.0

Remove the GFWL version that comes with the game and google for an older installer of GFWL 3.0 or 3.5. These allow you to play offline and ignore the log-in process altogether. The newer versions still want you to bind the game to your account first, if I remember right. And yeah, no issues whatsoever here. here workaround for bulletstorm
WTF is this shit? I can't understand a word of this.

Here's how it should've read

L 3.0 or and ignore workarount you to you to bind yeah, no issues whatsoeversion there workaround yeah, no issues whatsoever version thatsoeversions still want first, if I remember here. here. here the GFWL version the newer right. And yeah, no issues with that comes what comes what comes what comes with the game the log-in process altogethere. h

lol, so you better make sure you don't get The Stanley Parable.

The "Go Outside" achievment (for the Stanley Parable) - "Don't play The Stanley Parable for five years" :D
that's an easy one

play it, quit

set your clock forward 6 years

play it again

this also works on clickingbad, set it forward a day, get quadrillions of dollars, repeat

Well, to be honest, I could have gone in several directions with that one. MysterD just provides so much material to work with.

Gone Home is $9.99 . I have no idea what the game is, but a lot of game critics puts this game as the top games of this year. damn, it's tempting. Any thoughts on this game fellow CAGs?

At $4.99 it will be one of the best things you've ever played.

At $9.99 it will be a letdown for the amount of content you get.

Also. I've got an extra copy of Chivalry from a four pack. It's yours for $4.69.

I bought it for $5 and my thought after finishing it was "glad I didn't pay full price for this." It's a relatively unique game with a good setting and a good story, and I like the way it all unfolds, but I also found it lacking overall. The gameplay reminded me a bit of the old Tex Murphy games, in that you're mostly rooting around drawers and such for clues, but it's less than two hours to beat. So it that way it's a step back from those kind of exploring games, where they told a bigger story and had more pluses (like cut scenes, multiple locations and characters, and more interactivity).

Definitely not on my GOTY list.

To be honest, you could probably watch it on youtube and get the full experience.

That's what I did anyway.

Also, don't think of it as "best game of the year"

Think of it as a simple story that wraps up nicely. Nothing more, nothing less.

The game is a very good game. I would say it's in the top 10-15 games I have played this year. It's not especially long (took me somewhere around 2 hours to beat.) I don't think I would recommend it at the $9.99 price point for CAGs who view the short length of a game as a negative.

I didn't mind it was only 2 hours long. The game length / story feels just right, it tells the story it wants to tell and wraps up rather nicely.

I don't get many of the game length problems these days. Maybe when I was a kid, sure. But these days, I really appreciate a game like Brothers or Gone Home that knows when to bow out. In the era of the Steam Backlog, I find myself going for smaller titles more often.

However, Gone Home was just 5 dollars like  three days ago so I'd wait to see if it gets cheaper during the sale.

I agree with this. When deciding what to play next, I'll always play something that's 3-5 hours long first. The big problem is though, once all those short games are completed, I'm left with a huge amount of games that take 30+ hours to complete.

Legend of Dungeon is one of the most fun games that came out this year.  Everything is procedurally generated, so all items have randomized stats and all levels and enemies are random as well, yet it feels pretty balanced.  The weapons are really fun, from basic swords to magic hammers and flamethrowers, and this doesn't even touch on the spells that summon enemies or friendlies, the variation in quantities you can summon, etc.  The RPG mechanics are simple but fun to use (really it's just a manner of choosing buffs from available items), too.  HIGHLY recommended if you've got someone to play it with (local multiplayer only).

I say this a lot, Darksiders 2 sucks.
Just posting my MASSIVE DISAGREEMENT WITH THIS. Darksiders games are awesome.

Vote for Legend of Dungeon.. Proteus was humble bundled, and an IGS deal IIRC.
When was Proteus bundled??

Undercover - I found this one completely without challenge. 1st placing 80-90% of the time on my first time. I wasn't challenged so I didn't find this one interesting or notable at all. It might be just fine for more causal race fans, though I'm not fit to judge that.

Hot Pursuit - This one is a total blast. It is focused on supercars and long stretches of road. It had a pigs vs racers system with some weaponry/countermeasures. Best NFS since MW/Carbon. (I haven't played Rivals yet.) I completely totally recommend this. That said it departs from what people thought of as NFS* and it has some clear Criterion hallmarks.

Shift 1 - This one is strange. It's some kind of simcade hybrid with some really poor default settings. Supposedly if you tweak it enough, it's decent/pretty good. The cars felt featherweight and the AI is quite bash-you aggressive. I didn't have a wheel at the time. I'd like to revisit it some time with my G27, but it's lower on my try-again-w/G27 stack. I can't recommend it, but there might be a decent game with enough tweaking. I'd simply warn people if they're thinking of buying it.
Just posting my agreement with your HP love. It is fantastic (though I've no idea if an online community still exists for it).

This! ;)

Weird, NFS HP 2010 ran just fine on my X3 720 & GTX 260.

I'm not getting dragged into a NF$: Burnout Wanted (2012) discussion. On PC it had some bad and variable framerate issues. The way it is structured is pretty poor and lacks a sense of progression. The map is quite small and unremarkable. It wasn't challenging. The cars all handled largely the same. I beat all the later races with a 1985 Countach 5000QV. Driving that was the only highlight of the game.

Given what I've read and my NF$ Burnout Wanted experience, I'm also not touching Rivals till it hits $5.

Excellent choice. It's the one I can easily recommend. Plays well with a controller. I remember snagging it for $15 a few weeks after release. I'm rather fond of it's map... and still remember this one bend that caused me grief in time-trials-like races.
Stay away from Rivals, the MP is terrible and the SP is HP Part Deux.

I picked up Rivals at launch for my Xbox One and I have been greatly enjoying it. The constant multiplayer aspect threw me off at first but once you get in the groove of the mechanics it is really a blast.
What mechanics? There is no way to start an event on those giant empty maps unless you play with a bunch of friends. Racing or chasing with AI is not why I go online with those games.
